D People from East Asia tend to have more difficulty than those from Europe in telling facial expressions, and a new report published online in Current Biology explains why. Rachael Jack,University of Glasgow researcher, said that rather than scanning evenly across a face as Westerners do,Easterners fix their attention on the eyes. "We show that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features (to read facial expressions,"Jack said."Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, while Easterners focus on the eyes and neglect the mouth. According to Jack and his colleagues, the discovery shows that human communication of emotion is more complex (than we believed. As a result, facial expressions that were considered universally recognizable cannot be used to express feelings in cross-cultural situations. The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people when they looked at pictures of expressive faces carefully and put them into categories:happy, sad, surprised, fearful, angry,or neutral.Researchers then compared how correctly they read those facial expressions using particular eye movement strategies. It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made much more mistakes than Westerners did."The cultural difference in eye movements that they show is probably a reflection (of cultural difference in facial expressions,"Jack said."Our data suggest that while Westerners use the whole face to express feelings,Eastemners use the eyes more and the mouth less." In short, the data show facial expressions don't mean the same emotions everywhere.Leaming how culture shapes these social skills helps us understand human feelings.Otherwise, when it comes to communicating emotions across cultures,Easterners and Westemners will find themselves lost in translation. 37.What does Jack's research show? A.Westerners pay equal attention to the eyes and the mouth. B.Facial expressions are similar in cross-cultural situations. C.Easterners are better at reading facial expressions. D.Human communication of emotion mainly depends on eyes. 38.What does the underlined word"neglect"mean in Paragraph 3? A.Pay more attention to.B.Not take care of. D 21. C 22. A 23. C 24. A 25. 故选 A。 结合下文 "still kept watering the empty patch of earth every day"(每天仍坚持浇那块空地),可知每天所做的事是浇水(watered)。 根据后文 "I began to feel disappointed"(我开始感到失望)和 "Maybe it's dead"(也许它死了),可知土面上什么也没有长出来,用 Nothing。 All those years of ____ finally paid off" 中,paid off(得到了回报)的主体应是积极的付出,efforts(努力)与 pay off 构成自然搭配。 passed away 去世;passed by 路过/经过;passed on 传递/也可指去世,但不如 passed away 常见;passed out 昏迷/晕倒。"My grandfather ____ the following spring" 根据语境应是爷爷去世,passed away 是最常见、最自然的表达。故选 A。 immediate(立即的)与下文"需要时间"矛盾。 故选 A。 caring for 照顾;looking for 寻找;studying for 为…… some things are worth ____"——全文反复强调等待和耐心,结尾点题"有些事值得等待(waiting for)"。 26. This includes anyone who has played for a professional club in the last 3 years."(不允许职业球员参加,包括过去三年内曾效力职业俱乐部的任何人)。 New Experiences this Season" 部分提到:"Some cities will give out team products like jerseys to audience for free when their local teams are playing games."(一些城市在主场比赛时会免费赠送球衣等球队周边给观众)——D 项"球迷看球时可能会收到礼物"与此对应,正确。 Tickets for common games only cost 8.8 yuan"(常规比赛票价 8.8 元,暗示其他场次可能不同)矛盾。 29. What can be inferred about Amy before Uncle Bert's arrival? A. She avoided playing the violin to keep her painful memories asleep. B. She wanted to show her progress in violin to the guests. C. She found it too difficult to play the violin without Grandpa's help. D. She was waiting for a better violin to replace her old one. 30. How long did Amy's struggle in her mind last on that day? A. From the moment she made snow angels until the bonfire started. B. From Uncle Bert's arrival until she finally stood onto the chair. C. From the start of the songs until Dad told a story. D. From the sun setting until the voices of her family enlarged. 31. Why did Amy's notes become "stronger" during her performance? A. She realized that Uncle Bert's voice was exactly like Grandpa's. B. She was pretending that no one was watching her in the quiet hall. C. The sun image on the violin's neck gave her physical strength. D. She connected with Grandpa's spirit through their shared instrument. 32. Which of the following best describes the "warmth" Amy felt in the end? A. The heat coming from the bonfire started by her father. B. The excitement of becoming the center of that night. C. The power of family support and cultural heritage. D. The happiness of finishing a difficult task she had to do. A 30. B 31. D 32. 根据 "Her violin reminds her of Grandpa. She hasn't picked it up for weeks."(小提琴让她想起爷爷,她已经几周没有拿起它了)可推断,Amy 是为了避免勾起痛苦的回忆而刻意不碰小提琴——选项 A "她避免拉小提琴以使痛苦的回忆沉睡" 与此吻合。 故选 A。 根据 "She imagines Grandpa playing the same violin. 结尾 "Amy feels the love of her family encircle her, warm like sunshine."(Amy 感受到家人的爱将她包围,温暖如阳光)——这份温暖来自家人的合唱支持(family support)以及冬至传统的延续(cultural heritage)。 33. What is the passage mainly about? A. A new holiday policy. B. The call of nature. C. The development of education. D. Good news for students. 34. What can be inferred about the new spring break from Paragraph 2? A. It is set on the same date every year across the country. B. It is put together with the Qingming Festival in all provinces. C. It is arranged in different ways in different provinces. D. It is planned to last for at least eight days in all provinces. 35. Which of the following is NOT the purpose of the spring break? A. What is the writer's attitude towards the spring break? A. Worried and doubtful. B. Interested and curious. C. Surprised and disappointed. D. Positive and supportive. A 34. C 35. A 36. A 项正确。 故选 A。 根据第二段 "some local schools plan it right before the Qingming Festival, while others put it together with the May Day holiday"(一些学校安排在清明节前,另一些学校则与五一节拼接),说明不同省份安排方式不同。 A 项"为本地博物馆提供免费参观"——原文说的是"many local museums and scenic spots offer free entry to student visitors",这是配套措施,不是春假设立的目的本身。故选 A。 根据最后一段 "This new holiday policy fully shows the great progress in China's education development. We are also deeply thankful to our motherland, which brings Chinese people a more colorful, healthier and happier life."(我们也深深感谢祖国为中国人民带来更丰富多彩、更健康、更幸福的生活)——作者的态度明显是积极的、支持的。 37. What does Jack's research show? A. Westerners pay equal attention to the eyes and the mouth. B. Facial expressions are similar in cross-cultural situations. C. Easterners are better at reading facial expressions. D. Human communication of emotion mainly depends on eyes. 38. What does the underlined word "neglect" mean in Paragraph 3? A. Pay more attention to. B. Not take care of. C. Consider unimportant. D. Fail to notice. 39. What were the people asked to do in the study? A. They were asked to make a face at each other. B. They were asked to tell different facial expressions. C. They were asked to record their eye movements. D. They were asked to draw pictures of expressive faces. 40. What can be the best title for the passage? A. The eye as the window to the soul B. Cultural differences in reading emotions C. Effective methods for communication D. Different ways to show emotions 【答案】37. A 38. D 39. B 40. Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure"(西方人对眼睛和嘴巴同等重视)可知,A 项正确。B 项"面部表情在跨文化情境中是相似的"与原文"facial expressions that were considered universally recognizable cannot be used in cross-cultural situations"相反;C 项"东方人更擅长读取面部表情"与原文"Easterners… made much more mistakes"相反;D 项"情感沟通主要依赖眼睛"不准确,原文指出西方人均衡使用眼睛和嘴巴。故选 A。 Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, while Easterners focus on the eyes and neglect the mouth."——与 focus on(关注)形成对比,neglect the mouth 意思是"对嘴巴不加注意/忽略嘴巴"。 B 项 "Not take care of" 偏向"不照顾",不如 D 准确;C 项"认为不重要"是主观判断,语气太强。 根据第五段:研究者让参与者"looked at pictures of expressive faces carefully and put them into categories: happy, sad, surprised, fearful, angry, or neutral"(仔细观看表情图片并进行分类)——即让他们辨别不同的面部表情,对应 B 项 "They were asked to tell different facial expressions"。 Many middle schools in China have set up different kinds of clubs for students in recent years. What is a healthy life? 2. How can we live a healthy life? 3. How does a healthy life help us grow and study? How to Live a Healthy Life A healthy life means having a strong body, a positive mind, and good habits. It is the foundation of everything we do. To live healthily, we should first eat a balanced diet — more vegetables, fruits, and less junk food. Regular exercise is also important. Taking a walk, playing basketball, or doing morning exercises every day can keep our bodies fit. Besides, we need to sleep at least eight hours a night and avoid staying up late. But this year is different. One shadow is missing. Amy feels very sad. Uncle Bert has arrived. He greets Amy with a hug. "Amaze us with your violin tonight, Amy?" Amy holds her breath. Her violin reminds her of Grandpa. She hasn't picked it up for weeks. "You know Amy doesn't like a listener, Bert," says Amy's mom. "Kids change," Uncle Bert smiles. "I have a gift for you, Amy." He hands Amy a case. "It's Grandpa's violin." Amy opens the case. She touches the familiar image of a sun carved into the violin's neck, fingering the song Grandpa taught her. Grandpa said ancient people thought the earth was flat and the sun stood still on Winter Solstice. Amy feels her heart stands still. How can we have solstice without Grandpa's song? The sun starts setting. All guests have arrived, talking and laughing. For a moment, Amy thinks she hears Grandpa's voice. But it's only Uncle Bert sounding like him. Soon, it turns dark. Dad starts the bonfire. The celebration will begin. Grandpa was always first. When the bonfire began, he'd step onto the chair and play his favorite song, Sweet Angels Come Nearer. C China will officially start a brand-new spring break for primary and junior high school students across the country in 2026. Different from traditional festivals and holidays, this special vacation is made to give teenagers more time to relax and free themselves from heavy schoolwork. A number of provinces, such as Sichuan, Jiangsu and Anhui, have already worked out clear plans for the spring break. All over the country, the holiday lasts two to three days. To make better use of the holiday time, some local schools plan it right before the Qingming Festival, while others put it together with the May Day holiday. In this way, students can enjoy a longer vacation of up to eight days. The new spring break is more than just a time for rest. It helps students get close to nature and reduce their study pressure effectively. At the same time, it gives students a good chance for family gatherings and short trips. Besides, many local museums and scenic spots offer free entry to student visitors during the break, to encourage more students to go outside and take part in outdoor activities. D People from East Asia tend to have more difficulty than those from Europe in telling facial expressions, and a new report published online in Current Biology explains why. Rachael Jack, University of Glasgow researcher, said that rather than scanning evenly across a face as Westerners do, Easterners fix their attention on the eyes. "We show that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features (特征) to read facial expressions," Jack said. "Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, while Easterners focus on the eyes and neglect the mouth." According to Jack and his colleagues, the discovery shows that human communication of emotion is more complex (复杂的) than we believed. As a result, facial expressions that were considered universally recognizable cannot be used to express feelings in cross-cultural situations. The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people when they looked at pictures of expressive faces carefully and put them into categories: happy, sad, surprised, fearful, angry, or neutral. Researchers then compared how correctly they read those facial expressions using particular eye movement strategies. It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made much more mistakes than Westerners did. "The cultural difference in eye movements that they show is probably a reflection (反映) of cultural difference in facial expressions," Jack said. "Our data suggest that while Westerners use the whole face to express feelings, Easterners use the eyes more and the mouth less." In short, the data show facial expressions don't mean the same emotions everywhere. Learning how culture shapes these social skills helps us understand human feelings. Otherwise, when it comes to communicating emotions across cultures, Easterners and Westerners will find themselves lost in translation. 37.
