It was 2019 when 40-year-old Vichitra Senthil Kumar began to feel a sense of restlessness, an absence she could not quite name. “I always had a sense that something was lacking,” said Kumar, who was a former college football player.
But a turning point came when she joined the Rotary Club, an international group to promote community service, in 2019. Every day, Kumar would finish work and attend a variety of Rotary social work programmes. Kumar took to community outreach like a fish to water and her active efforts led to her being voted president of her club in 2021.
That same year, Tiruppur’s Government Medical College Hospital started its breast-milk (母乳) bank and contacted Kumar and her team for help with basic equipment such as tables and posters. The breast milk collected was given to premature (早产的) and newborn babies who were left alone or whose mothers were unable to feed them because of illness.
“In the beginning, I had no idea about these babies or their poor situation. All I knew was the milk we collected would be used to feed them. One day I asked the doctor on duty if I could go to see the babies in the wards (病房). I saw a tiny baby placed inside a box with its eyes covered to protect it from the light. Its weight was only around 600 grams. Seeing that baby changed something in me. I decided to take part in collecting breast milk no matter how far it is and do whatever it takes to help,” she added.
Staying true to her determination, Kumar made full use of her Rotary network, friends and family to collect milk from across the region, even as far as Bangalore, 300 km away. Though met with numerous difficulties, Kumar never gave up. “If there’s even one thought to help people or save lives, anything can be done. If you have the intention to help, that’s enough to take action and can even inspire others to follow suit,” said Kumar.
24.What led to Kumar’s being voted president of her club?
A.Her experience. B.Her knowledge.
C.Her commitment. D.Her leadership skills.
25.What did the hospital hope to get from Kumar and her team?
A.Their care for newborns. B.Some elementary supplies.
C.Their support for breastfeeding. D.A large amount of breast milk.
26.What inspired Kumar to help collect breast milk?
A.The mission of the Rotary Club. B.Her professional responsibility.
C.The request from hospital staff. D.Her meeting with a premature baby.
27.What can be known about Kumar’s belief?
A.Difficulties determine success. B.Action requires perfect planning.
C.Intention sets off collective action. D.Professional networks ensure results.

If you’ve ever played on a sports team or been to gym class, you probably know the practice. First, you do some warm-ups. Then you stretch (拉伸). Exercises and activities follow. At the end of the exercise, you do more stretches.
For years, coaches and gym teachers have believed that stretching helps athletes perform better, and suffer fewer injuries. From the health club to the football field, everywhere you look, people stretch. Now research suggests that stretching may not do your body as much good as people thought. After reviewing more than 350 scientific studies, researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that stretching may not cut the chance of injury.
“There is not enough evidence to show that stretching is effective,” says Stephen Thacker, director of the CDC’s epidemiology (流行病学) program in Atlanta. “Certain athletes stretch all the time, but they’re the ones who are more likely to get hurt.” Thacker points to professional baseball players as an example. They all do stretches before a game. Yet baseball players have one of the highest rates of injury in any sport.
To understand why stretching may be a bad idea, it helps to know how muscles work. It all starts with orders from the brain. Special cells called neurons carry electrical messages from the brain through the nervous system to the muscles you want to activate. As soon as the messages get to their targets, the muscles react. When you stretch, you lengthen muscle fibers. It then takes longer for messages from the brain to travel through them.
Stretching before you exercise is particularly risky, experts say. Instead of stretching before an activity, they recommend warming up by starting slowly to get blood and oxygen flowing to your muscles.
28.What is the common belief about stretching among coaches and gym teachers?
A.It improves performance. B.It should be avoided in matches.
C.It is only useful for athletes. D.It may increase the risk of injuries.
29.What does Thacker want to explain by mentioning professional baseball players?
A.The downside of stretching. B.The purpose of the CDC’s study.
C.The value of the group game. D.The necessity of doing warm-ups.
30.What happens to muscle fibers when you stretch?
A.They receive more electrical messages.
B.They become shorter and tighter.
C.They lengthen and slow signal transmission.
D.They send signals directly to the brain.
31.What do experts recommend for warming up before exercise?
A.Focusing on your thoughts. B.Stretching as much as possible.
C.Following the coach’s order. D.Starting with slow movements.
D
Europeans should try to stay indoors if ash from Iceland’s volcano starts settling, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned on Friday when small amounts fell in Iceland, Scotland and Norway.
WHO spokesman Daniel Epstein said the microscopic ash is potentially dangerous for people when it starts to reach the Earth because breathed-in particles (微粒) can enter the lungs and cause respiratory (呼吸的) problems. And he also said Europeans who go outside might want to consider wearing a mask.
Other experts, however, weren’t convinced the volcanic ash would have a major effect on people’s health and said WHO’s warnings were “hysterical”. They said volcanic ash was much less dangerous than cigarette smoke or pollution. Volcanic ash is mainly made up of particles of volcanic rock, which is light grey to black and can be as fine as talcum powder. During a volcanic eruption, the ash can be breathed deep into the lungs and cause cough or other discomfort even in healthy people. But once it falls from a greater distance — like from the cloud currently floating above Europe — its health effects are often minimal, experts say.
“Not all particles are created equal,” said Ken Donaldson, a professor of respiratory toxicology at the University of Edinburgh, “From a broader perspective, volcanic ash is not all that harmful.” And he said most Europeans’ exposure to volcanic ash would be negligible and that only those in the near districts of the Icelandic volcano would likely be at risk.
Dr. Stephen Spiro, a professor of respiratory medicine and deputy chair of the British Lung Foundation, said the further the particles travel, the less dangerous they will be. “The cloud has already passed over northern Scotland and we haven’t heard of any ill effects there,” he said. Spiro said to wear masks or stay indoors to avoid volcanic ash was “over the top” and “a bit hysterical”.
32.What can you learn from paragraph 3?
A.The volcanic ash had no impact on Europeans.
B.Other experts highly approved of WHO’s warnings.
C.The volcanic ash posed more risks than cigarette smoke.
D.The actual danger from the distant ash cloud was limited.
33.According to Ken Donaldson, who are most likely to be at risk due to the volcanic ash?
A.Europeans living in big cities.
B.People who often smoke cigarettes.
C.Those staying outdoors for a long time.
D.People in the near districts of the Icelandic volcano.
34.What does the underlined word “hysterical” in the last paragraph most probably mean?
A.Amazing. B.Practical. C.Valuable. D.Overstated.
35.What is the author’s main purpose in writing this text?
A.To criticize the WHO for spreading unnecessary panic.
B.To persuade the public to follow the WHO’s safety advice.
C.To present different expert views of a health risk.
D.To explain the chemical properties of volcanic ash.
Building self-esteem is significant because it directly impacts how you view and care for yourself, influencing your overall well-being. High self-esteem often reflects healthy self-care practices. 36 To that end, we can observe the following golden rules to achieve healthy self-esteem.
Write out a list of things you admire about yourself. The goal is to change your negative beliefs about yourself. It can be challenging to sit down and think about our admirable qualities. Yet recognizing your skills or things you like about yourself can improve your self-talk. You can try keeping a journal of what you enjoyed or admired. 37
Stop being a people pleaser. 38 They often put helping others before their own mental health. This can lead to great stress and burnout at work or in life. It’s nice to be helpful and thoughtful when you can. But your self-esteem will suffer when you tie it to the support for others.
39 Those with low self-esteem tend to avoid challenges and new opportunities. This can be due to fears or self-doubt. You should face difficulties bravely and try to pull through rough moments. Thus, you will gain increasing confidence in life. Of course, breaking your comfort shell doesn’t mean throwing yourself into highly dangerous situations.
Stop comparing yourself to others. Your progress and self-worth shouldn’t be connected to how well other people are doing. It’s not easy to stop comparing yourself to others. 40 Remind yourself that people only share the best parts of their life online. Don’t let likes on a photo determine your self-worth.
A.Step out of your comfort zone.
B.Learn to remove your self-doubt.
C.Staying away from social media can help this effort.
D.However, it’s no easy task to build healthy self-esteem.
E.It works wonders for improving the way you see yourself.
F.People with poor self-esteem feel dutiful to say yes to requests.
G.You need to appreciate your differences when compared to others.

I met an elderly man by the discount meat area. We were both looking through the cheap soup bones. My family was short of money, so I often had to be creative with meals.
The old man looked at my three children and told me they were beautiful. I thanked him and kept shopping. Since moving to Baltimore six months earlier, I had seen many old men like him. They often sat on the long chairs in the park or at the shopping center, talking loudly. This man seemed to be one of them.
He asked how old my youngest was. I told him she was almost one. He asked about my older children and then told the kids to help me and be good to their baby sister. They smiled shyly. I distracted (转移注意力) the baby with my keys and headed to the dairy (乳制品) area.
The old man followed me with his small basket. He asked if I lived near the store and if I could give him a ride home. I looked at his things:two bananas, some cereal, some carrots, and a package of discount chicken. His suit coat was old and worn-out, but his pants and shirt were neatly ironed (熨). I agreed to give him a ride.
Almost immediately, I wondered if I had made a mistake. Had he fooled me with kind words? But then I thought about our own situation. We had just bought a small car so my husband could go to work. Before that, I had been stuck at home all week. Now that I had a car, it seemed right to help someone else. The man was too old to be a threat.
I finished my shopping and he helped me load the bags into the back of my small car. Then I had him sit in the passenger seat and started driving in the direction he pointed to.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
To my surprise, the old man turned out to be kind and talkative.

W: Well, in many big cities, it’s almost impossible for people to go jogging during the day. Everyone’s very busy. Anyway, one night in bed, I had this idea for a new type of sports clothing.
M: So you developed this range called “Night Jogging”.

根据第二段“Kumar took to community outreach like a fish to water and her active efforts led to her being voted president of her club in 2021.(Kumar投身社区公益如鱼得水,她积极付出的努力让她在2021年当选俱乐部主席。)”
根据第三段“Tiruppur’s Government Medical College Hospital started its breast-milk bank and contacted Kumar and her team for help with basic equipment such as tables and posters.(蒂鲁普尔政府医学院医院成立母乳库,联系Kumar及其团队寻求桌子、海报这类基础物资的帮助。)”
根据第四段“I saw a tiny baby placed inside a box with its eyes covered to protect it from the light. Its weight was only around 600 grams. Seeing that baby changed something in me. I decided to take part in collecting breast milk no matter how far it is and do whatever it takes to help.(我看见一个小小的早产儿躺在箱子里,眼睛遮光保护,体重仅有六百克左右。见到这个婴儿后我的想法发生改变,下定决心投身母乳收集工作。)”可知,亲眼见到早产儿这件事激励她参与母乳收集。
27.细节理解题。根据最后一段“If you have the intention to help, that’s enough to take action and can even inspire others to follow suit.(倘若心怀助人的初衷,就足以付诸行动,甚至能感召其他人一同效仿参与。)”
C
【答案】28.A 29.A 30.C 31.D
根据第二段“For years, coaches and gym teachers have believed that stretching helps athletes perform better, and suffer fewer injuries.(多年来,教练和体育老师一直认为伸展运动能帮助运动员表现更出色,并减少受伤几率)”可知,教练和体育老师普遍认为拉伸能提高运动表现。
根据第三段““Certain athletes stretch all the time, but they’re the ones who are more likely to get hurt.” Thacker points to professional baseball players as an example. They all do stretches before a game. Yet baseball players have one of the highest rates of injury in any sport.(“有些运动员总是进行拉伸运动,但他们受伤的可能性反而更大。”Thacker以职业棒球运动员为例进行说明。他们都会在比赛前进行拉伸训练。然而,棒球运动员在所有运动项目中受伤率却是最高的)”可知,Thacker提到职业棒球运动员时,他是想说明拉伸运动的弊端。
30.细节理解题。根据第四段“When you stretch, you lengthen muscle fibers. It then takes longer for messages from the brain to travel through them.(当你伸展身体时,会拉长肌肉纤维。这样一来,大脑发出的信号通过这些纤维传递的速度就会变慢)”可知,拉伸会使肌纤维变长,大脑传递的信号需要更长时间通过。
31.细节理解题。根据最后一段“Instead of stretching before an activity, they recommend warming up by starting slowly to get blood and oxygen flowing to your muscles.(他们建议,在进行活动之前不要进行拉伸运动,而是先通过缓慢地开始活动来让血液和氧气流向肌肉,以此来做好热身准备)”可知,专家建议通过缓慢开始来热身。

根据第三段中“But once it falls from a greater distance — like from the cloud currently floating above Europe — its health effects are often minimal, experts say. (但专家表示,如果它是从更远的地方飘落下来——比如从目前漂浮在欧洲上空的云层中飘落——那么其对健康的危害通常就会很小。)”可知,从远处飘来的火山灰云的实际危害是有限的。
33.细节理解题。根据第四段中“And he said most Europeans’ exposure to volcanic ash would be negligible and that only those in the near districts of the Icelandic volcano would likely be at risk.
通读全文,尤其是第一段“Europeans should try to stay indoors if ash from Iceland’s volcano starts settling, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned on Friday when small amounts fell in Iceland, Scotland and Norway.
【答案】36.D 37.E 38.F 39.A 40.C
上文“Building self-esteem is significant because it directly impacts how you view and care for yourself, influencing your overall well-being. 因此D项“However, it’s no easy task to build healthy self-esteem.(然而,建立健康的自尊并非易事)”符合语境,提出建立健康自尊的难处,与上文形成转折,引出法则的必要性。
37.上文“Yet recognizing your skills or things you like about yourself can improve your self-talk. You can try keeping a journal of what you enjoyed or admired.(然而,认识到自己的技能或自身所具有的优点能够改善你的自我对话。你可以尝试记录下自己所喜欢或钦佩的事情)”建议记录优点来改善自我对话,此处应是对这种方法效果的总结。因此E项“It works wonders for improving the way you see yourself.(这对改善你看待自己的方式有奇效)”符合语境,肯定其效果,承接上文,其中的It指代上文的做法。
38.上文“Stop being a people pleaser.(别再做那种讨好他人的事了)”提出观点“停止讨好他人”,下文“They often put helping others before their own mental health.(他们往往将帮助他人置于自身的心理健康之上)”描述特定人群的一大特征,此处需指出什么是“people pleaser”。因此F项“People with poor self-esteem feel dutiful to say yes to requests. (低自尊的人觉得有义务对请求说“是”)”符合语境,点明“讨好他人者”的心理动机,承上启下。

注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;

To my surprise, the old man turned out to be kind and talkative. We talked all the way. He told me that he was a retired teacher, who moved to this community just two months ago. Because of the inconvenient transportation, he hadn’t been out since he moved here. He also said he was delighted to take a ride with me and get to know so many new things happening in the world.
After we stopped at his house, the old man reached into his worn wallet. He took out some crumpled bills and attempted to give them to me. I was totally shocked. “I just lent you a hand,” I said. “I’m grateful to you for your help,” he insisted. I smiled and accepted his offer. The next day, I was stopped by the old man again. “I really want to thank you again,” he said. “What can I do for you?” I smiled, “Nothing, thanks.” “I just want to help more people with my money,” he said. I was moved to tears.
