(Christmas was coming. Everyone was busy preparing gifts for their family and friends.)
Scene (场景) One
It was Christmas Eve, Della sat hopelessly by the table. She had only $1.87 to buy her husband Jim a Christmas gift. She saved as much as she could, but it wasn’t enough. Looking into the mirror, she sighed (叹气), “What am I going to do, Jim? I can’t buy you anything nice with just $1.87.”
Suddenly, an idea hit her. “I’ll do it,” she said to herself. Della rushed to her bedroom and began to pull down her long hair. “This is the only way.”
Scene Two
Della ran out into the street and knocked on the door of a store. The shopkeeper, a large woman, looked at her up and down.
“Will you buy my hair?” Della asked nervously.
The woman said, “Take off your hat and let’s have a look.”
Della took off her hat, letting her beautiful hair cascade down her back.
“$20.” The woman said after a quick look.
Scene Three
With the $20, Della hurried to a gift shop and bought a platinum fob chain (铂金表链) for Jim’s watch. It was beautiful, simple, and perfect. She smiled as she thought, “He’ll love it.” She couldn’t wait to give it to him.
Scene Four
Later that evening, Jim came home. He stepped inside, looking at Della with his mouth open. He looked at Della again and again and didn’t speak for a moment.
“What’s the matter, Jim?” Della asked.
“Della, I sold my watch to buy you something special.” He said slowly and pulled out a set of combs (梳子) for her hair—combs she long wanted in a store window.
Della sighed, “But Jim, I sold my hair to buy you the fob chain for your watch!”
Scene Five
They looked at each other, realizing the sacrifice (牺牲) they each made. “I guess we both gave up the things we loved most,” Della said softly.
Jim kissed her and said, “But we have each other, Della. That’s all that matters.”

【导语】本文主要讲述了Della和Jim在圣诞节互赠礼物时,各自卖掉了自己最珍贵的东西,最终发现礼物虽已无用,但彼此的爱才是最重要的故事。
【详解】71.根据Scene One中“Della rushed to her bedroom and began to pull down her long hair”以及Scene Two中“Will you buy my hair?”可知,Della是通过卖掉自己的长发来筹钱买礼物的。
72.文中划线处“letting her beautiful hair cascade down her back”意为让美丽的头发垂落至背部,此处cascade作动词,形容头发松散垂下的状态。A项“The leaves cascade from the tree”意为树叶从树上飘落,同为动词且描绘物体向下垂落的状态,意义最接近。

In the days that followed, dear reader, I slowly became friendly with the emperor and his people. They did their best to make me feel at home and brought me food and drink. I learnt that the name of their country was Lilliput. The emperor of Lilliput was a noble-looking man. He wore expensive clothes and had a big hat decorated with feathers. The queen was also very elegant (优雅的). Hundreds of the little people worked together to make new clothes for me and they gathered six hundred mattresses (床垫) to make me a bed.
The people of Lilliput called me “Man Mountain” and they came from all over the country to see me. People had to pay to see me and the money made the emperor very rich.
One day the emperor organized a parade for his people. He asked me to stand and his army walked through my legs to make everyone laugh happily. There were thousands of soldiers, some of them on horses. Everyone was happy.
The emperor and his people always treated me well and helped me in many ways. They organized language lessons for me. So gradually I began to understand and communicate with the Lilliputians and learn more about their lives.
But I was still a prisoner in my temple home and every day I asked the emperor the same question: “________”
“You must be patient,” he always answered.
Then one day the emperor gave me the freedom to walk about Lilliput. This made a big difference to me. I was able to explore the land. I was careful not to hurt the people or damage their houses as I walked. Everyone stayed inside and ran to their windows to look at me. I enjoyed looking into the windows of the emperor’s beautiful palace to see how he lived.

“What’s the matter, Tom? How’s your trip?”, his mother asked with a big smile. “I failed. The mountain is so high and full of big or small stones on the way. I still went ahead. But I was tired and it was so late that I had to come back.” Tom cried. “It doesn’t matter. You are only 14 years old after all. His father came over and asked, “Did you see the green trees on your way to the mountain?” “Sure, and there are a lot of beautiful flowers by the side of the road.” Tom replied. “Did you hear the birds singing?” his father asked. “There were many kinds of birds singing in the trees, and the sound was very sweet.” Tom said. “Did you feel the beauty of nature?” his father asked. “Yes, the blue sky, the white clouds, the green trees and the colorful flowers made a nice picture.” Tom answered. “That’s enough!” his father smiled and said, “Please remember, son. I looked around the ship, and then, I found some long pieces of wood. I made a raft (木筏) by tying them together with ropes. Then I got the things that I wanted from the ship. There was a big box of food. I also took many sharp knives and other tools, the ship’s sails and seven guns.
There were some hills around me, so I decided to build myself a little house on one of them. After some time, I found a little cave (洞穴) in the side of a hill. In front of it, there was a good place to make a home. After a lot of hard work, I had a very fine tent. The cave at the back of my tent was a good place to keep my food, so I called it my “kitchen”. The next day I thought about the possible dangers on the island. So I built a very strong fence (篱笆). Making tents and building fences were hard. I needed many tools to help me. So I decided to go back to the ship again, and get some more things.
I went back twelve times, but soon after my twelfth visit, there was another terrible storm.
The next morning, when I looked out at the sea, there was no ship.
When I saw that, I was very sad. “Why am I alive (活着), and why are all my friends dead?” I asked myself. “What will happen to me now, alone on this island without friends? How can I ever get away from here?”
Then I told myself that I was lucky-lucky to be alive, lucky to have food and tools and lucky to be young and strong. I said to myself, “I’m going to be on this island for a long time.” So on a long piece of wood, I carved (雕刻) these words: I CAME HERE ON 30TH SEPTEMBER 1659. After that, I decided to carve the date each day.

范文:
Share a Good Book
I’d like to share a good book with you—The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.
This book tells the story of a young prince who travels from planet to planet, meeting different grown-ups and learning about life. I like it because it is simple but full of deep thoughts. The words are easy, but the meaning stays with you.
From this book, I learned that what is truly important is often invisible to the eyes—things like love, friendship and responsibility. It also taught me to keep a pure heart like a child. I highly recommend it to everyone.

It was nearly dark; the sun was dropping down the mountains far away. Little Tom came back home, with tears in his eyes.
You still have another chance.” his mother said. “But, standing at the top of the mountain is my dream!” Tom said. In some cases, achieving what you expect is not the most important thing. Although you didn’t reach the top of the mountain, you got a lot on the way.”
It is true that not every goal will be achieved, not every job will end up with a success, and not every dream will come true. The most beautiful scenery is on the way.
