Growing up is not always easy. When I was 13, I faced a big challenge. I tried out for the school basketball team, but I was not chosen because I was too short. I felt very sad and disappointed. I even wanted to give up all sports.
My best friend noticed my pain. She advised me to try swimming. At first, I did it just to forget my sadness. However, I soon found that I was good at it. I practiced hard every day. Later, I won several competitions and made many new friends.

These days, talking on the phone isn’t as common as it used to be, because many people like to use messaging apps like WeChat. However, sometimes you have to make a call. For some people, this can be really scary. They might feel their hearts racing just at the thought of making a call. If this sounds like you, you might have telephobia—a fear of talking on the phone.
Telephobia is a kind of social anxiety Even people who feel comfortable talking to others in person can get nervous on the phone. When we talk face to face, we can see each other’s faces and body language. This can help us perceive what they mean. But on the phone, we can’t see those things and as a result, we can feel nervous and forget what to say or sound silly.
There are ways to help make phone calls easier if you have telephobia. The first is to smile before making a call. It may sound funny, but smiling can help you feel more relaxed. Another one is to think about how the call will go. Think about what you want to say and plan a little bit. You can even write down some important points. Finally, if you get a call and don’t feel ready to answer, that’s OK! You can call the person back later when you feel more comfortable.
So remember, talking on the phone doesn’t need to be scary. With patience (耐心) and a little preparation, you can make phone calls easily!

Emojis (表情符号) are a fun way to express ourselves while sending messages. But did you know that the same emoji can mean very different things in different cultures? This can cause misunderstandings or even trouble if you’re not careful enough. Let’s take a closer look at some emojis and their surprising cultural meanings.
Let’s start with the thumbs-up (竖大拇指) emoji. In many Western countries, people use it widely to show agreement or to praise a job well done. However, in some parts of the Middle East, West Africa and South America, people see it as rude, similar to giving someone the middle finger (手指).
The OK hand sign also has many kinds of cultural meanings. In the US and Europe, it simply means “everything is fine” or “perfect”. However, people in Brazil and Türkiye think it is an impolite gesture (手势). Even more interestingly, in France, it stands for “zero” or “nothing”. Clearly, this emoji’s meaning truly changes a lot across different cultures!
The folded hands emoji also carries different meanings. In Western cultures, many people take it as a high-five—a gesture of celebration. But in most Asian cultures, it is a way to express thanks or greet others.
The crossed fingers emoji can also get you into trouble. In the UK, the US and Canada, crossing fingers is a common way to wish someone good luck. However, in Vietnam, you’d better think twice before using the gesture, as it has an unexpected negative meaning there.

My phone rang. It was a text (短信) from an unfamiliar number, showing a photo of a smiling man in his 30s. “What a strange picture to receive!” I thought to myself.
For the past three years, I have been getting texts meant for this man, Jared. When the second text came, I was a playful girl in Grade Six.
“My Mom just told me that the Football Club will host a free barbeque dinner on Saturday! Hope you all will enjoy it,” it said.
“YUMMY!” I carefully replied.
The story of Jared became deeper. I learned that he was part of the Bowery Mission, which sounded like a gaming group. Looking it up, I realized it was actually an organization that helped poor families. This was around the same time I stopped volunteering in my community. I spent more time taking art classes and doing different sports. I then got some group texts from the organization. When a message came about offering food, I texted back, “Count me in!” The next Saturday, I put on my volunteer vest and went to the community center to help pack meals for the homeless.
However, I started to feel bad about this lie. Another man sent a long message, talking about the hopeless moments in his life. As I imagined what a good friend Jared could be, I felt ashamed that I was unable to provide the support this man needed and realized that I was not even a good listener to my own friends.

It was late when Matthew Cuthbert arrived home. His sister Marilla was waiting for him. However, she was very surprised when her eyes fell on the strange little figure beside him. Instead of the boy she was expecting, there stood a girl in a stiff, ugly dress, with red hair and bright eyes.
“Matthew Cuthbert, who’s that?” she asked. “Where is the boy?”
“There wasn’t any boy at the station,” said Matthew. “There was only her.”
“No boy?” Marilla insisted (坚持说). “But we sent word to Mrs. Spencer to bring a boy!”
The little girl was silent at first, but then she understood what they were saying. “You don’t want me because I’m not a boy!” she cried, and she began to cry stormily.
“Well, there’s no need to cry,” Marilla said, a little more softly. “We are not going to send you outside tonight. What’s your name?”
“Will you please call me Cordelia?” the girl said eagerly. But after Marilla’s questioning, she admitted unwillingly that her real name was Anne Shirley, which she felt was unromantic. “Cordelia is such a perfectly elegant name. I’ve always imagined that my name was Cordelia!”
“Nonsense,” said Marilla. “Anne is a really good plain name.” She then explained, “We need a boy to help Matthew on the farm. A girl is no use to us.”
At supper, Anne was too sad to eat. She said she was in “the depths of despair (绝望).”
Later, when Anne was sent to bed, Marilla and Matthew discussed the situation. Marilla was determined that the girl must be sent back. Anger isn’t a good feeling. Anger may make us feel uncomfortable, but it’s also a normal and natural emotion in daily life. Unluckily, many of us are used to hiding our feelings. Research shows that this can have long-term bad influences (影响) on our health, both in mind and body.
Is it better to cry or break things whenever something makes us angry? The research points out that when we show our anger in this way, we probably can’t get on well with our friends and our family. The longer we stay angry, the worse the result will be. So how can we deal with our angry feelings in a right way?
First, ▲ Anger is often caused by feelings such as fear, disappointment and so on. By finding out the true cause, we can deal with it more effectively (有效的). Second, pay attention to those everyday things that will make us angry. For example, we may get angry in the long lines at the store. Take a step back and think that it isn’t personal. Everyone in the line has dinner to make, just like us. Another way to deal with anger is to talk about it. The study shows that if we name our feelings, we can slowly calm ourselves down and feel better. Last, do some controlled breathing or find some helpful exercise to do. Exercise helps with feelings of anger.
If we learn to deal with anger properly, we will feel calmer, get on better with others and live a happier life.

Now, I understand that failure is not the end. It can help us grow and find our real talent. Every “pain” can become a “gain” if we face it bravely.

2.What did the writer’s friend advise her to do?
A.Practice basketball harder. B.Forget about the failure.

1.Why do people talk on the phone less than before?
A.Because people are too busy.
B.Because phone calls are more expensive.
C.Because people prefer to talk face to face.
D.Because many people like to use messaging apps.

A.Forget. B.Express. C.Understand. D.Expect.

A.Begin with funny stories.
B.Smile before making a call.
C.Talk about relaxing topics.
D.Hang up at once if you feel nervous.
4.What does the writer suggest doing if you don’t feel ready to answer a call?
A.Answering it when it rings. B.Calling the person back later.
C.Asking someone to answer it. D.Using a messaging app instead.
5.What is the best title for the text?
A.The Benefits of Making Phone Calls B.How to Use Messaging Apps like WeChat
C.Getting over Telephobia: Tips and Advice D.Why People Prefer Texting over Calling
1.根据第一段“These days, talking on the phone isn’t as common as it used to be, because many people like to use messaging apps like WeChat.”
2.根据第二段“When we talk face to face, we can see each other’s faces and body language. This can help us perceive what they mean.”
3.根据第三段“There are ways to help make phone calls easier...The first is to smile before making a call.”
4.根据第三段“Finally, if you get a call and don’t feel ready to answer, that’s OK! You can call the person back later when you feel more comfortable.”

Understanding these cultural differences can help avoid misunderstandings when communicating across cultures.
1.In which part of the world do people think the thumbs-up is rude?
A.Asia. B.The Middle East.
C.North America. D.Australia.
2.Which of the following has the most meanings according to the article?
A. B. C. D.
3.What can we learn about the folded hands emoji?
A.Western people use it to show anger.
B.Many Asian people use it to say hi.
C.It has the same meaning in all cultures.
D.It is impolite in most European countries.
4.What should people avoid doing when meeting someone from Vietnam?
A.Using folded hands to say thanks.
B.Giving the thumbs-up to praise them.
C.Crossing fingers for good luck.
D.Making the OK sign for perfection.
5.What is the main purpose of this article?
A.To encourage people to use emojis widely.
B.To suggest some new ways to use emojis.
C.To introduce the development of emojis.
D.To explain emojis’ different cultural meanings.
【答案】1.B 2.D 3.B 4.C 5.D

3.根据第四段“But in most Asian cultures, it is a way to express thanks or greet others.”
4.根据倒数第二段“However, in Vietnam, you’d better think twice before using the gesture, as it has an unexpected negative meaning there.”

During this time, I noticed how much Jared’s life has changed and I have also been discovering who I am. Learning from Jared, I have made more efforts to my community, and become a more understanding friend. Last month, I received another text. Yet, I replied, “Hey, sorry, this is not Jared, but I hope he is doing well.”
1.How did the writer feel when she got the second text?
A.Strange. B.Interested. C.Nervous. D.Bored.
2.What does “Count me in” probably mean in Paragraph 5?
A.Count the number of people. B.I want to join and help.
C.I need to count the food. D.I will stay at home.
3.Why did the writer feel bad about the lie?
A.She could not help the man like Jared.
B.She was unable to support her own friends.
C.She was not a good listener for the man.
D.She could not get on well with her own friends.
4.Which is the correct order of the events in the story?
a. The writer realized “Bowery Mission” was a charity, not a gaming group.
b. The writer received a text with a photo from an unfamiliar number.
c. The writer felt ashamed and decided to tell the truth to the sender.
d. The writer replied “Count me in!” to a message about offering food.
e. The writer learned that Jared was part of the Bowery Mission.
A.b→e→a→d→c B.e→a→b→d→c
C.e→b→a→d→c D.b→e→d→a→c
5.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.An Important Lesson about Honesty
B.A Message that Has Never Been Sent
C.A Self-discovery Journey with a Wrong Number
D.Two Good Friends Who Learned from Each Other
1.B 2.B 3.A 4.A 5.C
2.文中第五段收到提供食物的消息后,作者回复“Count me in!”,紧接着下一句“The next Saturday, I put on my volunteer vest and went to the community center to help”,说明该短语意为“我要加入并帮忙”。
3.第六段提到“I felt ashamed that I was unable to provide the support this man needed”,即她无法像Jared那样给予对方支持。
4.第二段“When the second text came”可知作者收到陌生号码的短信,对应 b;第三段“I learned that he was part of the Bowery Mission”可知作者得知Jared属于Bowery Mission,对应e;紧接着“Looking it up, I realized it was actually an organization that helped poor families”可知她查后发现是慈善组织,对应a;第五段作者回复“Count me in!”,对应d;第六段及最后回复可知作者感到羞愧并最终坦白身份,对应c。因此正确顺序为 b→e→a→d→c。

Matthew, however, spoke up unexpectedly. “She’s a real interesting little thing,” he insisted. “We might be some good to her.” As Matthew went to bed, Marilla frowned, and upstairs, the lonely child cried herself to sleep.

1.第一段“However, she was very surprised when her eyes fell on the strange little figure beside him. Instead of the boy she was expecting, there stood a girl...”,Marilla惊讶是因为“Matthew带回来的是一个女孩,而不是他们原本预期的男孩”。
2.倒数第四段“Will you please call me Cordelia?...‘Cordelia is such a perfectly elegant name. I’ve always imagined that my name was Cordelia!’”,Anne不喜欢自己平凡的名字,幻想自己有一个优雅的名字,这体现了她“富有想象力且渴望浪漫”的特质。
3.倒数第三段“...said Marilla...‘We need a boy to help Matthew on the farm. A girl is no use to us.’”,Marilla不想要Anne是因为他们需要一个男孩在农场帮忙,而“女孩对他们没有用处”。
4.倒数第一段“Matthew, however, spoke up unexpectedly. ‘She’s a real interesting little thing,’ he insisted. ‘We might be some good to her.’,Matthew认为Anne很有趣,他们也许能对安妮有好处,即“他们可以帮助她”,这表明“他同情Anne并建议留下她”,而不是送她走。
My name is George. When I was in middle school, I experienced a strong earthquake. When I was listening to the teacher carefully, suddenly I felt the ground shaking and everything started moving. Everyone in the classroom was shouting and crying. I was scared and even thought of the end of the world.
When the shaking stopped, the teacher quickly took us out of the classroom to the playground. We saw that the whole school was in a mess. Teachers tried to find all the students and make sure everyone was safe. As we stood on the playground, we could still feel the aftershocks.
After making sure it was safe, teachers called our parents to take us home. My house suffered some damage (损坏). The bookcases fell onto the floor and some things were broken. But I felt happy that we were all safe.
In the following days, we learned that the earthquake caused a lot of damage to the city. Many buildings collapsed and lots of people lost their homes and family. I was sad to hear that.
Looking back on this experience, I know how important it is to be prepared for natural disasters and I feel more hopeful about safety now. We never know when they will happen, but we can find ways to protect ourselves and our family.

3.第二段提到:“When the shaking stopped, the teacher quickly took us out of the classroom to the playground.” 结合前文第一段“When I was listening to the teacher carefully, suddenly I felt the ground shaking and everything started moving. Everyone in the classroom was shouting and crying.”以及第三段“My house suffered some damage (损坏).”
