Passage 2
For one woman, a quiet walk in the neighborhood turned into a life-saving task.
All was calm until a weak sound cut through the quiet. At first, she thought she imagined it — a soft cry, almost too quiet to notice. But then it came again, clearer this time: a small, frightened cry. Her heart jumped a beat. She stopped. Something was wrong. A dog was in trouble.
She looked at nearby yards, fences, and sidewalks — and then realized the cries were coming from below. Leaning over a storm drain (泄水沟), she saw at the bottom sat a dog, wide-eyed, shaking, and badly hoping someone would hear her.
Without hesitation, she called Animal Law Enforcement for help. Corporal Rollins arrived quickly, looking over the situation. The drain was too narrow for a simple rescue (营救), and the space below was small, making it impossible to climb in safely. Then Rollins noticed a nearby well cover. After the cover was lifted, a dark tunnel (通道) appeared, and almost immediately, the dog carefully walked toward the light, as if sensing that help had arrived.
Officer Moore soon joined Rollins, and together they formed a careful plan. With patience, calm voices, and treats in hand, Rollins climbed down and slowly earned the dog’s trust. Dirty, frightened, but unharmed, she finally allowed herself to be fixed and lifted safely out of the tunnel.
The frightened dog, named Kita, was brought to the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region. Her photo was quickly posted, and almost immediately her family recognized her. They rushed to the place, overjoyed to be reunited with their beloved dog. Before leaving, they made the right choice to microchip (植入芯片) her, making sure she could always find her way home in the future.
Another life has been saved. Another happy tail has returned to the home where it rightfully belongs.

Passage 3
Tuan Pham, a 47-year-old man, was feeling strong as he approached the 12-mile mark of the Long Beach Half Marathon. It was his seventh race, and he looked forward to celebrating at the finish line with his teenage son, who had run ahead. Suddenly, after taking another step or two, he collapsed, his memory cutting off entirely. He lay motionless on the ground, his heart having stopped completely.
He had no pulse and wasn’t breathing. Three blocked arteries (动脉) had caused a sudden cardiac arrest (心脏骤停) , leaving him clinically dead. According to the American Heart Association, the survival rate for an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest is less than 12%. Pham’s situation seemed hopeless, and his only chance relied on a miracle — like a heart doctor happening to be nearby.
At that very moment, Dr. Ryan Chiu, a heart doctor from a nearby hospital, happened to be just a few feet away. He had finished a meal and was leaving a restaurant when his friend asked him to stay a few minutes for the ocean view. This small delay proved to be fateful. Seeing Pham fall, Dr. Chiu rushed over, recognized the emergency, and immediately began performing chest compressions.
Dr. Chiu handled the crisis well. He asked a bystander to continue compressions while calling his hospital to prepare an operating room. Soon, an ambulance took Pham to the hospital, with Dr. Chiu driving behind. The surgery to clear the blocked arteries was a total success. Pham not only survived but fully recovered — he even planned to return to finish the last two miles.
Reflecting on the incredible series of events, Pham was filled with amazement. “I can’t believe the first guy to see me fall and give me help was a cardiac surgeon,” he said. “What are the odds?” It was the perfect timing — a friend’s casual suggestion, the surgeon’s delayed leave, and his immediate presence — that turned a near tragedy into a miraculous survival story.
1.What happened to Tuan Pham during the marathon?
A.He fell and got his leg injured. B.He lost his memory after the race.
C.He suffered a sudden heart failure. D.He felt too tired to finish the last two miles.
2.Why does the author mention “less than 12%” in paragraph 2?
A.To stress the urgency of Pham’s situation. B.To show the commonness of heart diseases.
C.To explain the importance of daily exercise. D.To criticize the slow response of ambulances.
3.What directly caused Dr. Chiu to be at the scene at the right time?
A.He was following the ambulance. B.He was participating in the marathon.
C.A friend asked him to stay to see the view. D.A bystander called him for immediate help.
4.What is the best title for the passage?
A.A Desperate Race. B.A Timely Rescue.
C.A Surgeon’s Quick Aid. D.A Marathon Misfortune.
Passage 4
“I was dead for 67 minutes. It’s a miracle that I’m here today.” Those are the words of Bruce Richardson, who survived a cardiac arrest (心脏骤停) in July 2016 thanks to the quick actions of his friends and the first responders who refused to give up.
It was an early summer morning, a typical Saturday. Bruce volunteered as usual in the community center. “I had no symptoms that there was any problem. It was a completely normal morning; I felt fine,” he shared. “I was visiting with friends. Then, I passed out. What happened next I know from what others have told me.”
Bruce’s friend, Jack, had learned how to perform CPR, and he quickly began chest compressions. Another friend, Doug, dialed 911 and the operator walked him through compressions until first responders arrived. Once the ambulance arrived, the paramedic tried five times to restart Bruce’s heart with an AED.By this time, Bruce had been without a heartbeat for over 30 minutes, often when time of death is called. On the phone with an emergency room doctor, one of the paramedics was instructed to try two AEDs simultaneously (同时). It worked; Bruce’s heart began to beat again. Incredibly, he awoke the next day and was able to communicate. After a week, Bruce made a full recovery and left the hospital.
Since Bruce’s cardiac arrest, he has since been able to resume a normal life with some differences. He now is a passionate CPR advocate. He has shared his story in the news, and last year he was a guest speaker at the Association’s Indianapolis Heart & Stroke Ball to encourage people to spread the message of CPR. Finally, Bruce shared his story in a video now being used to promote American Heart Association Hands-Only CPR kiosks installed around the country.

B.The instant actions of his friends and the first responders.
C.His volunteer experiences in the community center.
D.His friends’ proper guidance on performing CPR.
2.Why did Bruce share his story in a video?
A.To advocate the application of CPR. B.To appeal to more people to volunteer.
C.To share his struggle for a normal life. D.To enhance people’s awareness of fitness.
3.What can we learn from Bruce’s story?
A.Hard work will pay off one day. B.Ease your mind when panic arises.
C.Learning to live in the present matters. D.The knowledge of first aid counts.
4.What is the text?
A.A research paper. B.A book review. C.A news report. D.A course advertisement.
Passage 5
Choking on food is common in daily life, and we usually have others around to help when it happens. However, few of us know how to handle it if we choke alone. 46
The standard first aid for a choking person is the Heimlich maneuver, which requires a J-shaped inward and upward push on the abdomen (腹部) to produce pressure, forcing out the foreign object and causing a cough. If you choke alone, stay calm, repeat this movement with everyday items like a desk, counter, or chair. Bend forward to press the object’s edge firmly against your stomach, then lean in and use your body weight to push continually. 1 However, this is effective and reliable if you’re choking alone.
Medical experts confirm this self-help approach works. However, they warn that many people can hardly put enough pressure on themselves. 2 After all, it’s important to seek help by any possible means.
Choking often causes intense panic— one person described it as “the most frightening thing” because of the feeling of something stuck in the throat. 3 Thus, you may stay calm and act fast in an emergency. Repeating this approach helps build muscle memory and remember steps. This ensures you can respond naturally and effectively if you choke alone.
4 A related video shared online got over 1.5 million views, 68,000+ likes, and 845 comments. Many users praised its usefulness, with one saying, “You just saved my life” and another sharing, “I’ve done this. It was terrifying but successful!” For those looking to prepare for unexpected choking alone, this practical and proven method is an essential safety tool.
A.The hard edge may cause discomfort.
B.Practice this self-rescue method regularly.
C.You can also put the chair on your stomach.
D.Here is a way to prevent you from choking.
E.It is an urgent situation that needs self-rescue skills.
F.Even so, you can still give this self-rescue method a try.
G.The method has received wide attention and positive feedback.

五、书面表达
1.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
On a rainy morning in summer, a sudden flood hit our small town — nature’s fury reminded us not only how fragile (脆弱的) life can be, but also how strong our nation’s spirit is. The heavy rain had lasted for three days straight, turning the gentle river into a roaring monster. At first, I felt anxious as water gushed (涌入) into the streets, carrying tree branches, broken roof tiles, and even bicycles. My little sister caught my arm tightly, tears streaming down her face, while my parents hurried to move furniture to higher ground.
I felt overwhelming anxiety as the power went out with a sharp crack, and screams echoed (响起) from nearby streets. I received emergency alerts: this was a once-in-30-years disastrous flood, with the flood peak reaching 11,400 cubic meters per second — breaking historical records. But when I saw firefighters in orange life jackets rushing through chest-deep water with equipment, I told myself to stay confident — we weren’t alone in this.
Local officials used loudspeakers to announce evacuation (撤离) orders, urging everyone to gather at the school playground — a safe high ground surrounded by concrete walls, which would help us avoid the rising floodwaters.
Some young people from the town quickly established a temporary supply station (临时补给站) under the school’s basketball hoop, collecting bottled water, instant noodles, and first-aid kits (急救箱) donated by those who had arrived earlier. A college student named Lin, who planned to major in emergency management, took charge of organizing the supplies. She wore a red raincoat that stood out in the gray chaos, teaching us how to wrap bandages and calm panicked survivors with gentle words. Their courage and behaviour helped everyone around turn panic into unity.
By evening, the floodwaters weakened gradually, but the rain still drizzled (下毛毛雨). As we sat on the playground’s muddy benches, sharing a box of biscuits, words came that an elderly couple was trapped in their house on the west side of town, and the water there was still rising rapidly. My heart beat quickly. The west side was the lowest-lying area in town, and the roads leading there were full of broken walls and dirty water.
注意:
2.续写词数为250词左右;
3.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Without hesitation, Lin grabbed a first-aid kit and shouted, “Who’s with me?”

1.What was the dog doing when the woman found it?
A.It was calling for help. B.It was lying quietly there.
C.It was running in the street. D.It was searching for food.
2.Which can best describe the method of the rescue?
A.Proper. B.Costly. C.Stressful. D.Strange.
3.What did the dog do when being rescued?
A.It refused to move. B.It cried loudly.
C.It fought against the rescuers. D.It believed in the rescuers.
4.Which saying best fits what the dog’s owners did at last?
A.Every dog has its day. B.Love me, love my dog.
C.Better late than never. D.Every coin has two sides.
【答案】1.A 2.A 3.D 4.C

【答案】1.C 2.A 3.C 4.B

【答案】参考范文
First Aid Knowledge Matters!
As a student, I never fully realized the importance of first aid until last week, when an incident in our school cafeteria brought its value into sharp focus.
When my classmate spilled hot soup on his hand, I calmly guided him to the washroom. Following our first aid training, I had him hold the burn under cool running water for a full ten minutes. After gently drying it, I reminded him not to touch any blisters. We then visited the school clinic together.
First aid knowledge transforms ordinary bystanders into capable first responders during an emergency. It’s not just about techniques — it’s about readiness, compassion, and building a safer community. I strongly encourage every student to learn these vital skills, because helping each other starts with knowing how.

注意:
2.续写词数为250词左右;
3.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Without hesitation, Lin grabbed a first-aid kit and shouted, “Who’s with me?”

By midnight, the rain stopped completely, and we got to the supply station.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Without hesitation, Lin grabbed a first-aid kit and shouted, “Who’s with me?” My heart pounded, but seeing her determination, I stepped forward immediately. “I am!” Several other young people, including two strong neighbors and a shopkeeper, joined us. We quickly formed a small rescue team. Lin gave us brief instructions: stay close, watch for debris, and help each other. We held onto ropes tied to trees or lampposts, moving slowly towards the west side. The cries for help grew louder, guiding us through the flooded streets.
By midnight, the rain stopped completely, and we got to the supply station. We were exhausted and covered in mud, but relieved. The elderly couple, though shaken and cold, was safe. Volunteers at the station quickly wrapped them in dry blankets, and Lin used the first-aid kit to bandage minor cuts. Looking around at the tired but resolute faces illuminated by emergency lights, huddled together sharing warm drinks, I truly understood the unbreakable spirit of our community. The flood had tested us, but together, we were stronger.
