Sam loved their special monthly father-son date because they spent the whole day doing fun activities together. Last month, they rode the roller coasters. The month before that, they went to a football match. “Alright,” said Dad. “Mum made your favourite breakfast.” said Sam. They went to the kitchen. Mum was making pancakes. “What adventure do you have planned for today?” Mum asked with a smile. “We can go and see the new superhero movie,” exclaimed Sam. “Great idea,” agreed Dad. Just then, the phone rang. Sam heard his dad say, “Right now?” and then after a pause, “Keep calm and I will be right there.” Sam’s heart sank. He knew what his dad was going to say before he even got back to the kitchen. His dad always got called into work at the worst times. “I’m sorry, but I have to go to work,” Dad said. “But Dad!” complained Sam, “It’s father-son date and we always spend it together!” “I know, son,” Dad replied, “But this is really important and I need to go.” Sam’s lips curled down. “I have an idea,” Dad perked up (精神抖擞). “Why don’t you come with me?” “Really?” Sam said in surprise. “I would love to!” Sam ran to his room to get ready. He had never seen his dad at work, and hoped it would be fun. Sam’s dad led them past the Employees Only door. Inside was a room with nurses and a nervous zookeeper. All of them were relieved (如释重负) as Sam’s dad entered the room. In the corner of the room was a large black and white panda. She was upset. “This is my patient, Sam,” Dad said calmly. Dad slowly made his way over to the mama panda. He gave her some medicine and gently stroked (抚摸) her thick fur. Sam’s eyes were wide with amazement to see his dad being so brave. After an hour, Sam’s dad was holding four pink panda cubs (幼崽). “Sam, come here and meet the newest attraction for the zoo.” Dad called. Sam walked slowly over to his dad. He handed Sam a panda and the bottle. “This is the best date yet,” smiled Sam. “Not only do I get to hold a panda cub, but I also learn that you are a superhero!” 24. C Have you ever kept calm and thought twice before speaking when struck by strong emotions? This daily reaction reflects your level of emotional maturity (成熟), a vital personal quality that humans gradually develop from birth and improve continuously throughout life. Psychological studies show that emotional maturity is not an inborn talent but a learned ability that keeps improving with personal growth and life experience. Emotional maturity and emotional intelligence are related but different. Emotional intelligence refers to your ability to understand and manage your emotions. Emotional maturity, however, focuses more on people’s behavioral responses to various emotions and feelings, as well as their ability to reflect on their inner feelings and take responsibility for their emotional states. Generally speaking, being emotionally mature means you can recognize your emotions in different situations, take ownership of them and handle them in a constructive way. It also means that you’re aware of your triggers (诱因) for certain emotions, and able to accept when you’re in the wrong or overreacting. A psychological survey proves a clear gap between them: emotional intelligence helps people identify and understand emotions accurately, while emotional maturity enables people to make decisions and respond appropriately to negative or positive feelings. People with high emotional maturity can choose different ways to react to situations. They are willing to pause and analyze their inner reactions, which allows them to tell apart sudden situational pressure and other hidden factors that cause emotional changes. Most importantly, they firmly understand that all emotions originate from their inner selves rather than outside conditions. Statistics show that over 70 percent of emotionally mature individuals refuse to vent (发泄) negative feelings on others or shift responsibility for their bad moods to people around them. It is worth noting that emotional maturity does not mean never losing temper. A study in 2024 points out the key difference: mature individuals can actively apologize and move forward quickly. They will not be trapped in lasting guilt or allow negative emotions to take up extra mental energy. Besides, they are willing to accept sincere apologies and understand everyone makes emotional mistakes. This is why emotional maturity helps with relationships. Emotional maturity is a lifelong growing skill. Nevertheless, the normal development of it can be affected by things like lack of sleep, poor nutrition, some medications, chronic stress and so on. If you struggle with emotional maturity, what matters most is to recognize your weaknesses and actively improve yourself to achieve personal growth. 27. Why do emotionally mature people refuse to vent-negative feelings on others? A. They are used to stressful situations in daily life. B. They know bad moods come from within themselves. C. They have learned to recognize their negative emotions. D. They hold their inner feelings back from affecting others. 28. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing Paragraph 5? A. To offer tips on avoiding daily arguments. B. To explain how to build close relationships. C. To show the bad results of long-term negative emotions. D. To correct a common misunderstanding of emotional maturity. 29. According to the passage, who is probably the most emotionally mature? A. The person who is caught in lasting guilt. B. The person who controls his rising feelings. C. The person who points out others’ mistakes. D. The person who keeps silent after a quarrel. D In a modern economy focused on efficiency, growth and digital convenience, the act of knitting a scarf, woodcarving or mending a torn shirt seems like something old-fashioned. This view is shortsighted. Taking part in handwork is a necessary practice that restores cognitive (认知) balance, builds personal resilience (适应力), and keeps a human-centered spirit in the digital world. We should actively seek to learn and practice “useless” hand skills because their value cannot be measured on a spreadsheet. The first and most personal argument is neurobiological (神经生物学的). Handwork creates a unique cognitive state often described as “flow” or “the zone”, but with an important physical element. The movements of handwork activate the brain’s motor cortex and sensory systems and require lasting, active focus and fine motor control. This balanced mind-hand activity pulls people away from the digital world, grounding them in controllable reality. Unlike digital materials, the physical work brings a strong sense of achievement. Handwork also pushs back against a throwaway, consumer-driven culture that leads to passive helplessness. In an age where people replace broken items instead of repairing them, learning basic hand skills is a small act of resistance to waste. It rebuilds practical ability — the confidence that comes from being able to control your physical environment to solve a problem, shifting people from passive consumers to active creators. On a community and cultural level, handwork carries intergenerational knowledge and builds noncommercial connection. Elderly people teach traditional hand skills to young kids, passing down life experience from one generation to another. Groups such as knitting circles break down social barriers in ways digital communication never can. Handmade items, often given as gifts, hold deep emotional and relational value, preserving real, heartfelt cultural bonds (纽带). Moreover, handwork develops patient, iterative thinking that is fading (逐渐消失) in the quick-fix digital world. It requires trying again and again and making small changes to get better. Unlike screen tasks with easy undo buttons, handwork teaches planning and patience. It also teaches us to see “mistakes” as a lesson in resilience and problem-solving that applies far beyond the workshop. Efficiency is not the only measure of a meaningful life. In an increasingly automated, virtual society, handwork is a form of cognitive and spiritual care. It brings back our connection to the physical world, builds practical strength and reminds us we are creators, not just consumers. These “useless” hand skills are, in truth, necessary and important to preserving our humanity. 30. Which one can show the cultural value of handwork? A. It turns passive users into creative makers. B. It makes wisdom flow between different ages. C. It helps people improve practical working skills. D. It gives people a chance to keep the brain active. 31. What does the underline word “iterative” in Paragraph 5 most probably mean? A. Progressive. B. Creative. C. Active. D. Positive. 32. What can we learn from the passage? A. Handwork improves people mental health. B. Handwork keeps people away from digital pleasure. C. Handwork enables people to reconnect with real life. D. Handwork provides people with great material wealth. 33. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage? A. To encourage people to become active creators. B. To call on the public to protect traditional culture. C. To stress the value of hand skills in modern society. D. To show handwork’s influence on personal development. 第二部分 本部分共5题,共20分。根据题目要求,完成相应任务。 四、阅读表达(第34-36题每题2分,第37题4分,共10分) 阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。 Teen mental health: What role does social media play? Rates of low spirit, anxiety and other mental illnesses have been increasing in young Gen Z’ers, who were born after 1995. And in recent years, scientists and psychologists have often pointed out social media as one possible cause. New data confirm it could be a contributor. But how big a role it plays also depends on how teenagers choose to use it. In recent years, the internet has done some great things. It has brought people closer together. It has helped people form big communities that can reach over the world. And it can be an important place for people to find support and connection. No surprise, Gen Z is living online more than ever. But some teens can be exposed (暴露) to content that is harmful or upsetting. For instance, one survey in 2022 found that nearly half of all teens have been hurt or targeted online. And nearly two in every three Gen Z’ers came across negative content (内容) on social media. Social media is also a space where people are constantly comparing themselves to others. Am I pretty enough? Strong enough? Smart enough? Cool enough? One study of teens found that almost half reported that time spent on social media made them feel worse about their bodies. Only about one in every seven said viewing social media made them feel better. The good news is that you can take control. “The key is that social media use needs to be intentional (有意识的),” says Whitlock, a research psychologist. She means using it for some purposeful goal, not just to pass the time or as entertainment. In May 2023, the U. S. Surgeon General issued an official warning on teens’ social-media use. There’s still not enough evidence to say social media is safe for teens. But there was more than enough evidence, it said, to warn teens that they should take care when using it. Whitlock asks teens she works with to put together a “menu of practices” that improve good mental health. It should include little things they enjoy. She also suggests that if teens feel anxious, they should go back to that menu again and do something from their list — instead of turning to their phones and social media. Linked to both good and harm, social media should be used carefully. 34. What decides how big a role social media plays for teenagers? 35. What great things has the internet done in recent years? 36. Why may social media be harmful to teenagers’ mental health? 37. What is a wise way for teenagers to use social media? Why? (Please give two reasons.) 提示词语:running, change, strong, confident 内容提示:● What is your hobby? ● How does it make you a better person?
