Tracking (跟踪) some 65,000 miles across 45 countries, Christopher Schacht’s international bestseller Around the World on 50 Bucks (元) was translated into English by Janet Gesme.
As a translator, musician and mother of two, Janet Gesme speaks English, German, Russian, and Spanish. She fully understands Christopher’s intentions (意图) and has managed to express each idea in his voice. We recently had the chance to interview Gesme, who provided us with some fantastic insights.
How does a US/English-speaking reader differ from a European/German-speaking one?
The German-speaking readers are usually more patient and willing to read longer texts for a better understanding of an idea.
But that is not the case with Christopher Schacht’s book. He writes quick, exciting, short stories that make you laugh and make your eyes pop out in surprise. There was no need to change the style: his writing is exactly what an English-speaking reader loves.
What were the challenges or joys of translating Around the World on 50 Bucks?
First, we were on a short timeline, so I needed to translate the whole book in three months. That meant a lot of late nights. The second challenge was Christopher’s sense of humour. Some of his humour is based on German culture that is very hard to translate.
This leads into the joys as well. Christopher and I communicated online weekly while translating the book. We brainstormed together on how to find English equivalents (对应词) for the German style of humour.
One of the themes of this book is communicating through barriers. From your point of view, how would someone interested in travelling best learn a new language in a strange place?
Christopher has great tips for this in the book: Use apps and dictionaries to learn as many words ahead of time as possible. When travelling, you often have to wait a lot. This is the perfect time to learn. Then talk to people. You will make mistakes and it will be hard, but it is helpful and you’ll gain a lot.

A.Read the passage and fill in the table with proper words.
Many people dream of becoming social-media stars. But for most who work as content creators, just making ends meet (维持生计) is not an easy thing.
Clint Brantley has been a creator for three years, posting videos on TikTok, YouTube and Twitch. Although he has more than 400,000 fans, his income last year was still not as much as those of common U.S. workers in 2023. The 29-year-old is unable to pay rent now. The money he gets arrives irregularly, mainly from online tips and sponsors (赞助商).
Earning a reliable income as a social-media creator needs hard work—and it’s getting harder. Platforms are giving less money for popular posts. Sponsors are being pickier (挑剔的) about what they can get from the deals.
A few creators have enjoyed quick success, making this job the top of career wish lists for many teens. But behind this, creators say the job is tiring. They need to produce posts continually or accept the risk of losing influence. They spend their days planning, filming and editing posts while also trying to get support from advertisers and interacting with fans.
Like other self-employed (自由职业的) people, creators don’t get paid holidays, health care, or other benefits that companies typically provide for their workers. Creators, in the meantime, are having a harder time attracting viewers, because of algorithm (算法) changes and other factors beyond their control.

Should books always be kept in good condition?
How do you treat your books? Do you try not to fold (折叠) a page by using a bookmark? Are you careful not to make a crease (折痕) on the spine of the book when you open it or store your collection neatly (整齐地) on a shelf? Or perhaps you pay less attention to their condition—you’re happy to highlight (做标记) quotes and paragraphs or scribble (涂写) notes down the margins of a page. You take your stories with you wherever you go, even if that means they get a bit dog-eared and damaged (破损的). What’s your view—do you think they should always be kept in good condition?
People have been sharing their opinions online about the issue.
Yes
No
Books deserve our respect.
It doesn’t matter as long as you read.
It is important to care for your books. This is especially true if the book costs a lot of money, or was given to you as a present. If you don’t look after your books, people might not buy them for you in the future. They also won’t last so long if they are damaged. If a book is full of ripped pages, or has a damaged cover, it is less likely that a friend will want to pick it up and read it, so you won’t be able to share your favourite stories. If you donate it to a charity shop, it is less likely that someone will buy it.
Over time, treating books badly could become a bad habit. If you damage novels that you’ve borrowed from the library or a friend, you might end up with a fine—or an upset friend.
One of the great things about an actual book is that readers can make it their own with notes. If it’s a gift, you can write a nice message. These little scribbles are great to return to and can make a book feel personal and special to you. It doesn’t matter if this means that a book isn’t in perfect condition—you can always buy a new copy if the old one gets too damaged.
In the end, it should just be about what makes reading a book most enjoyable for each person. Authors just want people to read their stories; they don’t mind how or where people do it. If a reader should happen to damage their copy along the way, it doesn’t really matter.

Poetry is a creative way to express your ideas and views in words. Many writers enjoy poetry because there are no real rules to writing a poem. Even so, there are some useful guidelines (指导原则) that can help you write poetry. Here’s how to get started.
The best way to become a better writer is to be a reader first. Reading poets’ works can help you find out what kind of poetry you might like to write. Ask a teacher for advice, or visit your local library and ask a librarian to guide you to the poetry section.
Pick a subject
When thinking about what to write, you can start by looking for people and things around you. Spending some time thinking about what you love is also useful. Moreover, you can draw inspiration (灵感) from ideas and subjects that make a difference to you, such as saving animals or protecting the planet.
Consider types of poetry
Common styles are rhyming and free verse. With rhyming, you can make the first line rhyme with the second, the third line rhyme with the fourth, and so on. With free verse, you can rhyme or not rhyme at all.
Start writing
Keep writing down touching things on a small notebook, from colours to smells to sounds. From there, you can start writing your poem. Once you have a draft ready, you can put it away for a day. Then read your poem again and make it better until you’re happy with it.
Share it with someone
After you finish your poem, read it to a family member, a teacher, or even your pet. Reading a poem out loud can bring it to life.

Lots of people enjoy watching sports games in the world. But first of all, you need to know about audience manners.
Actually, most sporting arenas (竞技场) have rules for the audience written on the back of the tickets. Read your ticket carefully before your arrival. Try to reach your seat half an hour before the start of the event.
When the games begin, try to control yourself. Don’t say bad words about the players and coaches’ performance. Be careful with your words because some of them may make others angry.
Clapping is a special body language you can use to communicate with players, but you should do it properly. When players first appear, clap your hands together to welcome them, but don’t go on for too long. After an excellent performance, clap warmly. If someone fails, your clapping will help them feel better. Clapping is not welcome, however, while players need to keep their attention.
Different sports have different rules for the audience. Enjoy artistic gymnastics in silence. But lots of cheering can really help basketball and football players. When you watch table tennis games, you can’t use your flash photography. Don’t use mobile phones in shooting centers, either.
To be a better audience, you should spare time to learn about the rules and the culture of each event.注意:1-8题每个空格只填1个单词:9-10题词数不限。

Have you ever bumped into someone and their name just doesn’t come to you? Or, you walk into a room and suddenly can’t recall why you’re there? We can’t live without forgetting! Being forgetful can be really annoying, sometimes even embarrassing (尴尬). But what if I told you that there are actually good reasons for our memories fading away?
In a BBC interview, scientist Charan Ranganath uses an analogy (类比). We don’t want to store everything we’ve ever owned in our house. Then, we don’t need to store all our memories either. He says, “If we didn’t forget anything, we’d be storing memories, and you’d never be able to find what you want, when you want it. ” For example, you don’t need to remember the hotel number weeks after you’ve left the hotel or memorize all the faces you pass on the street.
We also need to be able to forget things in order to update our memories with new information. Imagine (想象)you get used to the same school timetable or work schedule (日程) for a whole year, but the next year, these all change. Your brain needs to be flexible (灵活) and forget details that are of no or little importance in order to handle the new information.
And, if you’ve ever believed that you know a word, but it just doesn’t pop into your head, you’re not alone. This tip-of-the-tongue phenomenon (现象) may suggest that some things are not fully forgotten, just can’t be easily picked up at one moment. Those with a higher level of knowledge are more affected by this, because their brains have to sort through more information to find the word.
In the article “Forgetfulness: Why your mind going blank can be a benefit”, the authors tell us that forgetting “is like a house we hide deep in the woods, and becomes harder and harder to find. ”
Interesting 1 about Forgetting
Forgetting is 2 of our life. Being forgetful can make one annoyed and even embarrassed, but our memories fade away for some good 3 .
No need to store all memories
According to Charan Ranganath, Our brain may work in a way 4 to a house.
We would 5 to find what we want from memories if we didn’t forget and stored too much information.
Updating memories
To handle new information, our brain needs to be flexible to forget 6 details.
Tip-of-the-tongue phenomenon
It suggests that we haven’t fully forgotten something, but have 7 picking it up at one moment.
An analogy
Forgetting is like a house 8 deep in the woods that becomes harder and harder to find.
9. According to the passage, forgetting can be a house that becomes harder and harder to find. How do you understand the analogy?

Changed from a former shopping mall, the 24,000-square-meter block opened in April 2022. Sitting near the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda and within the busy Datang Everbright City, the block has several metro lines to get there and has since drawn over 4 million visitors across the world.
The street recreates the busy streets, ancient buildings, and lively markets of ancient Chang’an. Visitors can walk slowly through the 12 themed Tang-style streets, enjoying the smell of local snacks such as Hu-style pancakes. Young ladies in Hanfu and Tang-style makeup can be seen everywhere. They take wonderful photos to record their special “time-travel” experience.
A highlight of the block is the interactive (互动的) shows. They can interact with actors dressed as Tang poets, such as Li Bai and Du Fu, reading aloud classic poems and learning about Tang literature. Visitors can watch and enjoy the famous Rainbow Skirt and Feather Coat Dance, pipa music and shadow puppetry. For food lovers, the first floor underground has a variety of real Tang-style snacks, allowing visitors to taste the delicious foods loved by ancient Chang’an citizens.
Modern technology plays an important role in improving the experience. VR and AI technologies are used to create immersive scenes (沉浸式场景), allowing visitors to “walk into” ancient paintings like Court Ladies Wearing Flowered Headdresses or share a drink with Li Bai through holographic projections (全息投影). There are also robot guides in Tang costumes, helping visitors find their way around the block and joining them in fun poetry games. According to Zou Linfeng, chairman of Shaanxi Cultural Tourism Co, the block makes great efforts to put together traditional culture and modern technology.
Last year, the city received 278 million tourist visits, up 33.1% year-on-year. This block not only provides a fun way for young people to learn about Chinese history but also successfully shows the charm of traditional Chinese culture to the world.

If we want our society to get better, we need development. But sometimes development means old things must make way for new things. When we move toward the future, we cannot keep everything from the past. Finding a good balance between progress and protecting cultural sites can be a big challenge. However, big challenges can sometimes lead to good solutions.
In the 1950s, the Egyptian government wanted to build a new dam (水坝) across the Nile. The dam could help control floods, make electricity, and bring water to more farmers. But many people protested the plan. They worried that water from the dam would damage temples and destroy cultural relics. These were important parts of Egypt’s cultural heritage (遗产). The government listened to scientists and citizens who lived near the dam. In 1959, they turned to the United Nations for help.
Soon, a committee was set up. Their job was to protect the temples and cultural relics (文物) from being damaged or lost. The group asked for help from different departments and raised money from countries around the world. Experts studied the problem, did many tests, and came up with a way to save the buildings. In 1960, a document was signed and the work began.
Governments and environmentalists from all over the world joined the project. Temples and other cultural sites were taken down piece by piece. They were moved to a safe place and put back together again. In 1961, German engineers moved the first temple. With help from around the world, 22 temples and countless relics were moved to safety over 20 years. Fifty countries donated nearly $80 million to the project.
The project ended in 1980. It was seen as a great success. These countries found a way to move forward while protecting the relics of the past. If a problem is too hard for one country to solve, sometimes the global community can help.

This is an unusual truth that anyone older than 25 will already know: as life goes on, time seems to speed up. Think back to childhood when holidays seemed to last forever, and you attended school for what felt like decades. Now, consider last year, by contrast, and it probably raced by. As those in their 30s and 40s will know, the effect gets worse with age—and, for people in their 70s, a year can flash by in what seems like days. “Where did the time go?” we wonder.
The best reason is that we can keep the important facts in mind longer when our brains have to process more information. Childhood and young adulthood are full of novelty (新奇)—the first time you rode a bike, had a romance, got a job—but, as we get older, things get more routine (常规). You can test this out by remembering a recent experience of novelty in your life, such as travel. A few years back, I went skiing for the first time, and that four-day trip still feels “long”. But I might have difficulty noticing a four-day period in my ordinary life.
One way that can work things out, then, is easy to see: try lots of new things. Travel more, if you can, and to strange places. Try new hobbies and meet new people—you’ll be using your brain with a lot of efforts, and the result will be a life that feels longer, more meaningful. But small changes work, too: even making a change in the route (路线) you take to the office, reading different kinds of novels or choosing a different place to buy your sandwich at lunchtime will have an influence on your feelings.
But novelty can only go so far. Besides, a fulfilling (令人满意的) life requires routine: you can’t build deep relationships, or rise through the ranks at work, if you always make new friends or get new jobs or even have new husbands or wives. That’s why the Buddhist teacher Shintzen Young suggests another method: learn to meditate (冥想). Even a few minutes a day will get you to have better concentration (专注), and the better you get at concentrating, the more information your brain will take in during any experience, no matter how boring.
You need to believe in yourself. You’ll be making your whole life a little more novel (新颖的). You’ll be more present and time will pass less quickly; in fact, you’ll make your life longer--without magic pills or creative medical technology.
How to stop time 1 up
The problem
It is not a common truth to anyone who is 2 25 years old that time seems to go faster as life goes on. The 3 you get, the faster time races by.
The 4 of the problem
When things become usual in our life, it might be 5 for you to pay attention to them and soon time passes by. So, experiencing something fresh and special can make you 6 things longer.
Advice on how to solve the problem
It takes you a lot of efforts to use your brain when trying new things, making you feel that your life is longer and 7 more to you.
Changing something a little can also make a difference to your feelings.
Learning to meditate helps people 8 their concentration and take in more information from boring experiences.

10.结合原文“充实的生活需要常规+相信自己”的观点,答案合理,贴合文章主旨。
A.Read the passage and fill in each blank with one word.
A Life with Music
Many years ago, I thought I was picking up a guitar for the first and only time. Instead, it stayed with me for a lifetime.
My first guitar lesson was tough. My fingers hurt, and I felt frustrated (挫败的), but I was completely attracted. At 10, I felt a deep connection to this mysterious instrument. Since then, guitars have been my life.
As I played the guitar day by day, surprisingly, the pain was gone, and I grew closer to the instrument. The snap (咔嚓声) sound of the strings and the smell of a worn pick (拨片) became a natural part of my life.
Playing the guitar is an amazing experience. When I hold the guitar, I feel like that curious 10-year-old again. With each strum (弹拨), I feel as if all my stress just flies away.
The joy of playing gets stronger when I see its influence on others. In my late teens, I played in a band at hospitals, children’s camps and homes for the elderly. The smiles, dancing and singing of those we played for stay with me.
The guitar also bridged cultural differences. As I traveled, I communicated with other players through our instruments, creating beautiful, wordless conversations.
People had better find their own instrument—something that connects them to themselves and others. It might not be a guitar; it could be a paintbrush, a pen or a sport. What matters is the sense of success and connection it brings. When I hear my son’s guitar at night, I hope it touches his soul as it did mine.
