Math is everywhere! It helps us in many ways. Let’s see how math works in our life.
Traffic Solutions: Math on the Road
Have you ever wondered how traffic lights work? Traffic engineers use math to set the lights. They think about:

With math, they can find the best times to change lights and stop traffic jams. Math keeps our cities moving!

·Stories, like the three main characters in Harry Potter
“Three” makes us feel strong and complete!
Weather Forecasting: Math in the Sky
Math is also important for weather forecasts. Every day, computers use math to look at data like:

At the beginning of the school year, each student was given a special job to take responsibility for the whole term. Rita, a quiet and hardworking girl, hoped for an exciting task like taking care of the lovely class plants. Instead, she received a small box with sand and a small ant.
Even though her teacher said this task was special, Rita still felt upset. However, she decided to try her best to do it well. She studied the ant’s habitat and basic needs carefully, making the box a warm and comfortable home. Surprisingly, the ant grew much bigger than anyone had expected.
Rita’s hard work caught the eye of her science teacher, Mr. Thompson. He turned her work into a meaningful class project, making Rita the little expert on ants. Her careful study helped the whole class learn more about ant behavior. They even built a big ant farm in the classroom to watch ants closely.
As the year went on, Rita’s classmates became more and more interested in the ant project. They started asking her questions and watching the ant’s behavior themselves. Rita proudly shared her rich knowledge with her classmates. She also gave a wonderful report at the school science fair. Finally, her class was named the best of the year, and she was highly praised.

It might sound like magic, but in February 2004, a paralyzed patient successfully drank water independently. He controlled a special smart glove only with his brain, and the glove acted just like his real hand. This was an important and exciting success in BMI technology developed by a team of excellent Chinese scientists and doctors.
BMI means connecting the human brain with outside machines. It allows the brain and computers to communicate with each other easily and quickly. For paralyzed people, this useful technology can greatly help them move their bodies and finish simple daily tasks all by themselves.
On October 24, 2023, the medical team placed a small BMI chip (芯片) in the patient’s head. The special chip is able to receive neural signals (神经信号) from his brain. After three months of careful and patient recovery training at home, the patient could use his brain to control the air-pressure glove. Now he can finish simple daily actions more independently.
Different from traditional BMI, this new technology is minimally invasive (微创的). It does little harm to the brain and is an important medical breakthrough. It also uses wireless power, so no extra batteries are required for the device.
Today, BMI is mainly used in medicine to help people with brain or speech problems. In China, it is still in the early research stage with no products on the market. Some people worry about its real influence on patients’ daily life. Besides, many ethical problems (伦理问题) about related tests also need to be addressed properly and seriously.

Around the world, kids have different childhoods, but many of them share one thing--the fairy tales of Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875). As a great fairy tale writer, Andersen’s stories have been popular with generations (代) of children.
Andersen experienced a poor and difficult life in his youth. But it inspired him to write wonderful stories. “I have a lot of material,” said Andersen, according to one of his biographies (自传). “It often seems to me as if every little flower is talking to me.”
In his fairy tales, children not only see amazing worlds but also learn difficult themes about life in simple ways.
In The Little Mermaid, to stay with the prince, the little mermaid (美人鱼) asks the witch to change her tail into human legs. Although she can walk and dance beautifully on her human legs, she is in great pain when she does it. Sometimes we need to make sacrifices (牺牲) for something or someone we love. That’s what Andersen wanted to explain to us.
His other two stories also have strong social messages. In The Ugly Duckling, the character everyone makes fun of has inner (内在的) beauty. Andersen wanted to teach children not to judge people by their looks and common people can become heroes. The Emperor’s New Clothes is about two tailors who trick a very proud emperor into walking around with no clothes on. It shows Andersen’s anger against the power of his time.
Today, Andersen’s fairy tales have been put into more than 100 languages. To honor the great writer, every April 2, on Andersen’s birthday, people celebrate International Children’s Book Day.
