On Saturday morning, I planned to go to the pool but Mom asked me to watch my five-year-old sister Lyssa and three-year-old brother Dougie because she had an important job interview.
“Couldn’t Julie watch them instead?” I asked unhappily.
“She can help, but she’s only ten. I’ll feel better with a fifteen-year-old in charge (负责).” Mom kissed me and went away.
About ten o’clock, the kids were playing outside while I was reading my sports magazine, with my headphones on.
Deeply lost in a cool story, I hardly noticed Julie already came in. I took my headphones off. “Look at the sky,” she said nervously. I went out and saw a huge tornado snaked down from the sky to the ground. I couldn’t believe it — a real, live tornado! I was so afraid that my heart was almost in my mouth.
I tried hard to remember the facts I learned about tornado safety in school:
Get low. Find a basement (地下室), or if you’re caught outside, find the lowest place you can.
Looking around, I found a ditch (沟) about a hundred meters away.
“Julie,” I shouted, taking Lyssa quickly. “Get Dougie and follow me to the ditch!”
We were making our way hard because of the wind and rain. Suddenly we all fell to a muddy (泥泞的) bottom two feet below. I made everyone lie, arms protecting their heads. The tornado blew away almost everything. I thought we were going to die… But the next moment, it was over. I lifted my head and saw the tornado rushing away. Soon the sky cleared.
Standing on the mess, I kept thinking: What if Julie saw them, and I was at the pool?

The AI time has started. People are using AI chatbots (AI 机器人) for almost any purpose. If you don’t know AI chatbot well, now is the best time to catch up.
AI chatbots are chatbots that use AI to reply to your messages. They are powered by “generative AI (生成式人工智能)”. The difference between generative AI and “old” AI technologies is that, generative AI can create information right away.
Generative AI models are trained on billions of books, articles, and websites. With that huge amount of knowledge and information, the AI chatbots are able to learn the patterns and rules of human language, including grammar, sentence structure, and even some reasoning abilities.
AI chatbots can understand patterns and relationships between words and phrases. When you give it a question or instruction, it’ll provide the most likely order of words that would follow your message. That’s why the clearer your question or instruction is, the more useful the chatbot’s answers will be.
People are using AI chatbots for almost any purpose. For example, they can help with many kinds of creative work. They can help you write or rewrite poems, songs, or stories, and help you fix any mistakes you might need to correct in something you wrote. Some chatbots can also help you search for things on the Internet and find the exact answers you need. If a chatbot doesn’t have the ability to search some certain information, it can still make the information you’ve given it easier to read and understand.
However, it’s important to know that chatbots can and often make mistakes. If you solve a math problem by using a chatbot, don’t hand it in as your homework — there’s a very high chance that it’s wrong. Also, text created by a chatbot has a clear “AI” style. It might cause you to get a “0” on your paper. You should never use the chatbot’s final result directly. Instead, chatbots are here to guide you and maybe help you a bit by giving you steps or feedback, but you still need to put in human work.

Patience is one of the most important qualities in our lives. It refers to the ability to wait calmly instead of feeling upset or angry when we face difficulties, long waits, or frustrating (令人沮丧的) moments. We need patience almost every day — whether we’re waiting for a late friend or working on a hard school project. 36
Patience is important to our personal growth. Learning new skills and achieving important goals both take time. For example, learning to play the piano is a gradual process. If we rush, we might make mistakes and lose hope. 37 As the saying goes, “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” We must be patient, since success needs enough time and hard work.
Patience is also important in relationships. When we have arguments with friends, being patient allows us to talk things out calmly. 38 Instead, a little patience can keep our friendships strong.
39 It means working consistently (持续地) towards our goals, even when it’s hard. We need to keep trying without giving up hope. Athletes, for example, train for years before they can win a competition. Their patience brings success.
In today’s fast-paced world, being patient can be a real challenge. 40 When we feel impatient, we can tell ourselves that good things are worth waiting for. At first, it may be hard, but over time, it will become a habit that can improve our life.
