Passage 3
①Do you notice that the sea gets warmer every few years? This is called “El Nino”—a big area of warm water in the Pacific Ocean. But why does it happen?
②El Nino starts when something changes the winds. Scientists think the winds come from the northern half of the world and then form this energy. These winds blow south over the ocean. When they meet warm sea water, the water gets even warmer and starts to move.
③Imagine blowing on a cup of soup—the wind makes the soup move. Similarly, strong winds push the warm water east across the Pacific. This warm water piles up (堆积) and creates El Nino. The process happens every 2 to 7 years, making the weather change, like heavy rains.
④As well as the sea water becoming warmer, El Nino affects the weather in every part of the world. It can bring a lot of heavy rain. Besides, strong winds can break buildings down. It can even mean that fishermen cannot catch fish.
⑤We can’t do much about El Nino because it’s something that happens by itself in nature. But we can try to improve the weather by not letting the earth get too warm and by keeping the air clean. The most important job for scientists is to learn how to find out when El Nino will bring dangerous weather. Then, people can try to prepare for violent weather such as storms. Modern technology (现代技术) can be helpful. Still, it’s hard to say when or where El Nino will cause problems for us.
1.According to the passage, which picture is NOT the result of the El Nino?
A. B. C. D.
2.Which sentence uses “form” with the same meaning as the underlined word?

C.To help farmers get ready for dry weather.
D.To show people how to stop El Nino.

Passage 1
①Do you remember your first birthday party or learning to walk? Most people cannot remember anything before age three or four. This common experience is called “infantile amnesia”—forgetting your earliest memories (记忆).
②For many years in the past, scientists thought babies couldn’t make memories because their brains weren’t ready. They thought a special part of the brain—the memory part that helps keep memories in the brain, didn’t grow enough in young children.
③However, a new study from Yale University challenges this idea. In the study, researchers showed babies pictures of faces and things. Later, they showed the babies these pictures again but also some new photos. If a baby looked longer at the picture showed before, that usually meant the baby knew what it is. Then, the researchers found something important: If the baby’s memory part worked harder when seeing a picture, the baby was more likely (可能的) to remember it later. This brain activity happened in all babies, even under one year old. This means babies may start making memories much younger than we thought.
④But this raises a big question: If babies can make memories, why can’t we remember being babies? Scientists still aren’t sure.
⑤One idea suggests baby memories are only short-term. Like quickly forgetting a phone number, these memories were gone as we get older.
⑥Another idea is that the memories stay in our brains forever, but we lose the way to access them—that is, to find and get them back. As the scientist Nick Turk-Browne, who led the study, says: “The problem isn’t making memories—it’s finding them later.” So your first words or toy, might be hidden in your mind like a locked treasure box... but the key to access the box is gone!
1.According to Paragraph 2, why did the scientists think babies couldn’t make memories?
A.Because babies didn’t see enough pictures. B.Because their memory parts didn’t grow enough.
C.Because memories just went away quickly. D.Because scientists didn’t study them carefully.
2.What can we infer from the new study of Yale University?
A.One-year-old babies have no brain activities at all
B.We may still have the memory of our first walk.
C.Researchers showed pictures of faces and things to the babies.
D.Girls usually have better memories than boys.
3.Which sentence uses “access” with the same meaning as the underlined word?
access/ˈækses/ v. ①进入:②接触;获取;
A.▶You need a key to access the School Compute Center.
B.▶The library gives free Internet access to all students.
C.▶Reading books helps us access the truth of the world.
D.▶Every student has access to the teacher’s help after class.

Passage 2
If you fly across several time zones, you may have jet lag You arrive in a new time zone, but your body is still living on the time in the old time zone. You may be hungry for dinner at midnight, and you may want to sleep all day.
People have jet lag because all living things have a biological clock (生物钟). For example, plants begin to work when the sun rises. When winter comes, birds fly to warm places. Some insects like bees (蜜蜂) also seem to set their alarm clocks to look for food.
Some scientists did an experiment (实验) with bees in Paris. They put out sugar water at 4:00. p.m. every day, and the bees came to drink the water at exactly the right time. Then the scientists put bees in a dark room. The bees still came out at the same time. Later the scientists took the bees to New York. The bees came for the food at the right time again, when it was only 10:00. a.m. in New York. Their bodies were still on Paris time.
People have a biological clock, too. Our body clock tells us when to sleep and eat, but we can change it little by little. For example, if you travel to another country, going to bed early for a few days helps your body learn the new time. Then you won’t feel tired or hungry at the wrong times. Scientists also find something interesting—sunlight can help your body clock! But how?
1.What is the passage about?
A.Bees. B.An experiment. C.Time zones. D.Biological clocks.
2.How many examples of the biological clock does the writer show in Paragraph 2?
A.Two. B.Three. C.Four. D.Five.
3.When did bees come out for food in New York?
A.At 10:00. a.m. (Paris time). B.At 4:00. p.m. (Paris time).
C.At 4:00. a.m. (New York time). D.At 10:00. p.m. (New York time).
4.What may the writer talk about after the last paragraph?
A.How jet lag affects people and animals. B.When and where plants begin to work.
C.Why body clock is important for people. D.How sunlight affects people’s body clock.
Passage 3
①At 4:00 p.m., you are watching a football game live (现场直播) from Europe. At the same time, your friend in New York is sleeping — it’s 4:00 a.m. there! Why is the time so different? Why do people in other places start their day when we are already in the middle of ours?
②That’s because of time zones. Even though we live on the same planet (行星), people in different places are doing different things at the same time.
③How do time zones work? The earth is like a big spinning (旋转的) ball. It turns from west to east. That’s why the sun is coming up in the east first. The world is divided into (被分成) 24 time zones. Every time zone is one hour different.
④Let’s look at some examples. In China, people in the East 8 time zone are getting up early and going to school or work. In London, people are enjoying afternoon tea at around 4 p.m. In New York, many people just finish lunch at that time.
⑤Time zones also bring some problems to our modern life. For example, a video (视频) meeting may start at 10 a.m. in Beijing, but it’s midnight in New York. These time differences make it important to plan carefully and respect others’ time.
⑥Time zones don’t just change the clock — they change our daily life. Time makes us different — but it also makes the world colorful and fun.
1.How does the writer start Paragraph①?
A.By giving an example. B.By giving some numbers.
C.By telling a story. D.By explaining the reasons.

In March 2024, many Chinese students joined Tree-planting Day activities. They went to parks with their teachers and planted trees. Each student watered at least one tree and put up signs saying “Protect Me!”
Why is planting trees important? Trees make the air clean. They take in carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) and give out oxygen (氧气). One big tree can make oxygen for four people every day! Trees also help keep water in the ground and stop soil from running away.
This year, some students tried a new way—planting “virtual trees” online. On Ant Forest of Ali-pay (支付宝蚂蚁森林), users collect “energy (能量)” by walking or taking the bus. When they get enough energy, a real tree is planted in a desert. By now, over 100 million trees have been planted this way!

①Pandas are China’s most famous animals and a symbol of the country. These black-and-white animals not only look cute but also have many special habits. Let’s know more about them and learn how to save them!
②Pandas have soft fur. Their black eyes look like they’re wearing sunglasses! Adult (成年) pandas weigh as much as three sixth-grade students (about 150 kg). When standing on their hind legs (后腿), they’re taller than most classroom desks (up to 1.8 meters).
③Pandas are bamboo lovers and they eat for 14 hours every day! Why so long? Because they need a lot of energy. They live in mountain forests in Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu because there is a lot of bamboo in these places.
④However, only 1,864 pandas live in the wild now. People cut down trees to make farms. That makes pandas’ homes smaller. Climate (气候) change is also a problem. Some bamboo is dying, and some forests are going away. When they disappear, pandas can’t find food or safe home.
⑤Saving pandas can start in our daily lives. When we recycle (循环利用) paper notebooks and shopping bags, we help save bamboo and forests. Sharing panda stories with friends or drawing “Save the Pandas” posters for school activities also helps a lot.
⑥All of us can also work together to help save pandas. During your holidays, visiting panda reserves (熊猫基地) in Sichuan is a good way. When you go, your ticket money helps plant more bamboo and save the forests.
⑦Every panda is important. By saving them, we also save forests for other animals. Remember: saving pandas means saving nature!

A.Ice and water are different forms of the same thing.
B.Please fill in the form with your name and phone number.
C.He is tell the story in the form of a poem.
D.We can form a study group to help each other.
3.Why does the writer write the passage?
A.To ask fishermen to be careful during storms.
B.To give a scientific introduction of El Nino.
C.To help farmers get ready for dry weather.
D.To show people how to stop El Nino.
4.What’s the structure of the passage?
A. B.
C. D.

3.Which sentence uses “access” with the same meaning as the underlined word?
access/ˈækses/ v. ①进入:②接触;获取;
A.▶You need a key to access the School Compute Center.
B.▶The library gives free Internet access to all students.
C.▶Reading books helps us access the truth of the world.
D.▶Every student has access to the teacher’s help after class.
4.Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?
A.
B.
C.
D.
【答案】1.B 2.B 3.C 4.A
根据“scientists thought babies couldn’t make memories because their brains weren’t ready. They thought a special part of the brain—the memory part that helps keep memories in the brain, didn’t grow enough in young children.”
根据“This means babies may start making memories much younger than we thought.”以及“the memories stay in our brains forever, but we lose the way to access them—that is, to find and get them back.”
划线词为动词形式,可排除B项和D项;根据“the memories stay in our brains forever, but we lose the way to access them—that is, to find and get them back.”
故选A。
根据“People have jet lag because all living things have a biological clock (生物钟).”

根据“The bees came for the food at the right time again, when it was only 10:00. a.m. in New York. Their bodies were still on Paris time.”及“The bees came for the food at the right time again”可知,蜜蜂在纽约出来觅食的时间对应巴黎时间的下午4点。故选B。
根据最后一段“Scientists also find something interesting—sunlight can help your body clock! But how?”
2.Why does the writer talk about a video meeting?
A.To show how interesting meetings are. B.To show time zones can be a problem.
C.To tell us how to take part in a meeting. D.To explain how people use computers.
3.Which paragraph does this following picture come from?
A.② B.③ C.④ D.⑤
4.Which is the right structure (结构) of this passage?
A. B.
C. D.
