I started to think about what made me happy. I thought back to the warm and happy days studying together with my grandma. I decided to try to live a more fulfilling life. I read on social media about phone-free living and it intrigued me. So I deleted TikTok and started spending more time in nature. On a trip upstate that summer, I went outside and noticed the quiet you don’t get in the city. I heard the wind rustling the leaves above me and the water hitting the rocks at the edge of the lake. I was reminded of how I’d felt before I was always on my phone, when I was a kid playing outside.
Also, I’ve made a good group of friends. This group is never boring or annoying. They’re not interested in brain rot and they’re not trying to be cool. We goof around, but we also encourage each other, and they do interesting things that inspire me, like sailing and learning ancient Greek. I’ve even gotten into science with these friends. Recently, we sat together in the lunchroom and quizzed each other on the chemical properties of matter and homogeneous mixtures. It was fun; not like a chore. Once again, chemistry — which I thought I hated — connected me with other people. Being off social media gives my brain a break from adrenaline. I can think more clearly and my focus is stronger.

The next day, Joe asked me to bring him my secondhand bicycle. I wasn’t sure why, but I trusted him enough to wheel it over. Much to my surprise, Joe took out a toolbox and spent the whole day fixing it up and renovating it — tightening the chain, oiling the gears, and replacing the rusty pedals with new ones. When he handed it back, the bike looked almost new. “Now it won’t scratch anyone’s car — or your leg,” Joe said jokingly. In the following weeks, besides delivering groceries and chatting with Joe, I poured myself into preparing for the play my school held every year. I would impress everyone, I thought.
When the annual school play drew near, my parents said they couldn’t watch me perform. Bitterly disappointed, I mentioned it to Joe. He gave my shoulder a comforting squeeze and reassured me that everything would be fine. On the night of the play, I was surprised to see Joe in the back row, dressed in his best suit. After the play was over, he handed me a small bouquet of flowers and spoke highly of my performance. I thanked him with watery eyes, wondering if he realized that he had made my day. “Well, isn’t that what grandpas are supposed to do?” Joe responded, as he took my hand and walked me to his car.

【答案】The crowd’s laughter faded as the head judge stood up, microphone in hand. “What an inspiring idea!” he exclaimed. “Though your VR project faced setbacks, your passion for the environment truly shines. We can turn this virtual failure into a real - world success.” He proposed that the school initiate a tree - planting project. The audience burst into applause, and excitement filled the air. Maya and I exchanged excited glances, our disappointment replaced by newfound determination.
Two weeks later, volunteers arrived at the school with gardening tools and young trees. Students from different grades gathered, eager to contribute. Maya and I led the way, showing others how to dig holes and plant saplings. The girl with the stuffed owl was there, her eyes bright with enthusiasm. As we watered the newly - planted trees, we knew that our message about protecting the environment had truly taken hold. What started as a VR disaster had blossomed into a meaningful movement to make our world greener.

Just as he reached the top of the slope, his foot slipped. Jason lost his balance and fell down the rocky slope, rolling over and over until he finally came to a stop at the bottom. The others gasped in horror. Alice quickly rushed down to him, checking for injuries. “Jason, are you okay?” she asked, her voice trembling. Leo and Eric followed closely behind, their faces pale with worry. Fortunately, Jason seemed to have only suffered a few scrapes and bruises, but he was clearly in pain and couldn’t stand up on his own.
With the first aid finished, they realized a new challenge: how to get back. The slope was too steep and slippery for Jason to climb up alone. “We need to find a safer way,” Leo said, looking around. They noticed a narrow path that seemed to lead back to the main trail, which was a relief. Eric volunteered to stay with Jason while Alice and Leo went ahead to explore the path. “Don’t worry,” Alice reassured Jason, “we’ll come back for you soon.” After what seemed like ages, they returned and guided everyone safely back to the campsite, where the teachers were waiting anxiously.

Paragraph 1:
Without warning, she climbed onto the railing. It happened so quickly. Conrad lunged forward and reached for the woman, but she teetered. He threw his arms around her, trying to haul her down off the railing. But she grabbed the railing with no attempt to let it go. “Let go of the railing,” Conrad said, “or I’ll have to yank you off.” However, he couldn’t hear any response. The wind was howling, creating an echoing sound on the icy irons. The only sound he could hear was his heart pounding loudly in his ears... like the insistent heavy drumming of rain beating upon a window pane.
Paragraph 2:
Suddenly, bright lights appeared—it was the police ! Someone had reported Conrad’s car for being parked on the bridge—just as he’d hoped. An instant later, a loud squealing sound of brakes was heard, and two police officers stepped out of the car. Recognizing what was going on, they dashed straight towards Conrad and the woman. The two officers took hold of the woman, then handed Conrad a knife so that he could cut off the rope tethering her to the bridge. He grasped the knife, placed the tip of his flexed thumb on the railing and cut the rope knot down firmly. The woman collapsed on their shoulders. Seeing this, relief unleashed within Conrad—the shadow of death was gone.

That day, Coach Leong announced that he would be retiring after our competition. His voice trembled with emotion as he shared the news, casting a somber mood over the team. Understanding dawned upon us — the upcoming game wasn’t just about winning; it was our last chance to honor Coach Leong’s dedication and years of hard work. We doubled our efforts during practices, focusing on coordination, trust, and passing rather than individual glory. Stepping onto the court, we played like never before — passing precisely, communicating effectively, and supporting each other at every turn. Holding that championship trophy high, we knew we had not only won the game but also rediscovered the true essence of teamwork.

The crowd roaring with the name of “Aaron”, I was on the edge of giving up. However, the sun cast Aaron’s image over me, reminding me that I would always be walking in his shadow if I couldn’t prove myself. Unwilling to quit at this crucial moment, I made quick adjustments. Exhausted as I was, I calmed myself down, gritted my teeth and strove to catch every ball. Then came the chance. The ball made contact with my racket and flew over Aaron’s head. Greatly astonished, he could do nothing but witness his undefeated status as reigning champion being erased by his younger brother.
The whistle blew for the end of the match and I achieved the final victory. “I made it!” I yelled and jumped into the air, my face lit up with excitement. Meeting my joyful eyes, Aaron walked over, patted my shoulder and thumbed up at me, “Congratulations!” “Thank you!” I replied, a toothy smile spreading across my sweaty face. Just then a round of applause and cheers rang through the whole court, “Well done, Dallon! ” Hearing my name echoing in the air, I knew that I’d proved myself by freeing myself from the title of “Aaron’s younger brother”.

Why don’t we two go to the store and surprise her?” Gramps said to me. Before I could respond, he was already heading towards the car, key in hand. I hesitated for a moment, but the thought of seeing Gram’s surprised face made me follow him. As we got into the car, I realized that Gramps might not remember how to drive properly. “Are you sure you can drive, Gramps?” I asked nervously. He chuckled and said, “Of course, I can, Melanie. I’ve been driving for years.” But as we pulled out of the driveway, I noticed that he was driving much slower than usual, and he seemed a bit confused about which way to go.
Fortunately, Gram and a police officer showed up just in time. Gram rushed over to the car, looking worried. “George, what are you doing?” she exclaimed. The police officer explained that someone had reported a car driving erratically, and they had tracked it down to us. I explained what had happened, and the officer nodded understandingly. “It’s okay, kids,” he said. “Your grandpa just needs a little help remembering things sometimes.” Gram hugged Gramps tightly, and I could see the relief in her eyes. She thanked the officer and then turned to us, saying, “Let’s all go home and have some lemonade together.” As we walked back to the house, I knew that even though Gramps forgot things sometimes, he would always remember how much we loved him.

Paragraph 1:
Mariana pointed to the bags, “Something tells me Ginger might not have been sleeping this whole time!” Sure enough, Ginger had sneakily dragged our art bags into the hallway! The canvas was crumpled and covered in tiny teeth marks. The foam brushes had been already torn into pieces, obviously beyond use. “Oh no!” gasped Jasmine, “Ginger must have woken up while we were snacking! I’m so sorry!” “It’s OK,” said Mariana, “She is way too little to know any better.” I bit my lip, imagining how we’d explain this to Ms. Williams. As if seeing through what was on my mind, Mariana grabbed my arm, “Remember what Ms. Williams said? We can paint our portraits in any style.” Her eyes landing on the kitchen table, she exclaimed, “How about using kitchen items?” “Why not?” I laughed. And we hurried back to Mariana’s house.
Paragraph 2:
We ended up having a great time making our portraits. We transformed kitchen items into painting tools-sponges created soft skin textures, forks made perfect hair lines, and the toothbrush speckled beautiful freckles across the cheeks of the portraits. Without proper brushes, we had to be more deliberate with each stroke, studying our subjects’ features more carefully than ever before. Finally, I declared, “Ta-dah! A perfect Mariana Lisa!” When we presented our portraits to Ms. Williams, she examined them closely before smiling. “These show incredible resourcefulness,” she said. “You’ve proven that real artists don’t need perfect tools-just perfect creativity.” So when life chews up your plans, sometimes you just need to grab a fork and keep painting.

For a month, Lena raced between school, homework, and the camera shop. Every afternoon, Lena worked at the camera shop, helping Mr. Thompson and serving customers. Her hands grew rough from organizing film rolls and polishing lenses, and her feet ached from standing for long hours. Though exhausted, she cherished the hope of seeing her father’s smile again — the way he did in those old photographs. One evening, Mr. Thompson handed her a box. “Your hard work paid off,” he said warmly. Lena’s hands trembled as she cradled the camera. Her eyes glistening with gratitude, she whispered, “Thank you, Mr. Thompson.”
On Father’s Day, Lena woke up early to prepare her surprise. She placed the camera on the kitchen table and waited nervously. When her father came in for breakfast, his weary eyes widened at the sight. After a short pause, his hardened fingers traced the camera’s edges gently, as if touching a memory. For a moment, there was silence. Lena broke it with a soft “Happy Father's Day, Dad!” “Thank you! This means more than you know. Let’s take a photo together,” his voice cracked with emotion. Lena finally saw it — the smile from the photographs. The click of shutter dissolved years of quiet tension, connecting them at last.

“Want to shoot a few hoops, Dad?” I asked, thinking it might cheer him up. “Sure,” he said, opening his eyes and smiling a weary smile. “We still have a little time before dinner, don’t we?” The three of us decided to shoot foul shots from the edge of the driveway to see who went first. Dad’s first shot arched beautifully, swishing through the net with that perfect “swoosh” sound we both loved. “Beginner’s luck!” I teased, “Watch this one!” But my shot was off target. Dad grabbed the rebound with surprising agility. “Pressure goes to you, champ?” He winked, lining up his next shot—another nothing-but-net. “Whoa, what a shot!” Dad said. He did a little victory dance, lifting his hands and waving them over his head. “Best of five?” I challenged, secretly thrilled to see his real smile emerge — the one that crinkled his eyes and showed his slightly crooked tooth. Just as he was about to take his third shot, Mom’s voice cut through our laughter that dinner was ready.
“Another shot tomorrow!” Dad said, “Mom is waiting for us to have dinner now.” So, the three of us headed upstairs for dinner. Dad gave my shoulder a firm squeeze, his calloused palm lingering for a second longer than usual. “Thanks, kid.” he murmured, the roughness in his voice betraying something deeper than words could say. I noticed his shoulders seemed less burdened and his steps more relaxed. The time we’ d spent on the driveway — laughing, missing shots, celebrating the occasional swish — had done something I hadn’t seen in months: they’d brought him back to himself. When he was happy it felt like everything fit into place, including the basketball, which dropped through the net without even touching the basket. The pandemic may have taken Father’s clients and income, but when he stood before the fading backboard and released that perfect arc, we recognized once more the magician with light in his eyes.

【答案】 Paragraph 1: Vivie felt out of place among them. The girls wore matching outfits — soft pink dresses paired with white knee-high socks, their hair neatly woven into identical braids. The boys stood in crisp polo shirts, their polished shoes gleaming, and some had new haircuts. Vivie stood near the wall, her leopard-print T-shirt clashing boldly with her orange leggings. Her Nona’s old beads felt heavy now. She hadn’t even brushed her hair. A few kids glanced her way, their giggles sharp in her ears. Whispers floated around her:“Why’s she dressed like that?” Each word stung. Clutching the beads at her waist, she bit her lip, head drooping. “Am I wrong?”Maybe the pink dress would’ve been easier. Slowly, she shuffled toward the corner, her confidence slipping away.
Paragraph 2: As she tried to slip into the corner, a voice cut through the noise, “You look cool!” It was Joe, his green cape flapping as he bounded over, purple shoes glinting. Vivie’s cheeks warmed with a shy smile. “Thanks, Joe! I love your cape — it’s like a superhero’s!” Joe grinned. “I wanna be a comic book hero someday. Your outfit’s like... a jungle ballerina cowgirl!” They both giggled, and Vivie’s nerves began to melt away. A few other kids turned, their whispers turning into curious questions about where she got her clothes. Vivie beamed, explaining her outfit with growing pride — the leopard shirt for her love of cats... When Vivie’s turn came, she strode to the blue screen and sat, chin high. The photographer blinked. “Big smile!” Vivie grinned, her smile as bold as her clothes. Vivie knew she’d chosen perfectly—she was herself, and that was enough.

Mom appeared in the doorway with Tammy by her side. Tammy was crying, tears rolling down her cheeks. Mom’s gaze shifted to my picture, which I held with shaking hands. She gently pushed Tammy out of the room. She shut the door and sat down next to me,“Tara,”she whispered,“I’m so sorry, I know you worked hard on it. Tammy is challenging sometimes, but your yelling at her doesn’t solve anything. ” It felt as if a dam inside of me broke. I signed and walked out of the room with my picture.
I gathered up the courage to walk over to Grandma. Grandma looked up at me, her eyes sparkling. I handed her the picture I had drawn, the one that Tammy had ruined. Grandma took it into her hands and said, “Oh, Tara, I love it!” She smiled at me. “Do you know why I love it so much? This picture represents the bond you and Tammy share. If you look closely at the picture, there was a faint picture of two girls smiling and holding hands. ”I watched Tammy from a distance. I had been so worried about not having the perfect fourth July vacation that I forgot about what mattered most.

Casting a glimpse at the label, Karie stared at Ms. Iris, her jaw dropping, “I get to keep this? Sensing her hesitation, Ms. Iris comforted, “just take it easy”, whose gentle tone and soothing words immensely tugged at her heartstrings. It was then that Karie mustered up courage to tell the truth. After taking over the dictionary Karie handed her, Ms. Iris gazed at the skinny figure leaving dejectedly.

However, what greeted her was Ms. Iris’s approval, together with her advice, “honesty should be your eternal companion”. As Karie traced the altered label, the sunlight through the window made the word “honest” glow. It wasn’t just a dictionary anymore—it was a reminder that true perfection lies in courage to be real.

Then a familiar Chevrolet car pulled up beside us. It was the same car we had seen earlier at the gas station. The driver rolled down the window and waved at us with the other man beside him, saying a few words in Russian. Although we didn’t understand the language, we quickly resorted to gestures, wanting to grasp the last straw. Suddenly, my husband got an idea. He rummaged through the bag, pulled out the hotel card and pointed frantically to it with the repeated word “Kvart”, hoping they would understand. Thankfully, the driver nodded and the other man typed Kvart into his phone map and and showed us, as if asking us for confirmation. Seeing this, we nodded desperately and gave thumbs-up signs.
Finally they understood what we meant. And more fortunately, they offered to escort us back to the hotel. The driver started the engine and the other man beside him occasionally glanced at us with a reassuring smile. We felt safe and secure, though the streets were still deserted and the rain was relentless. After what seemed like an eternity, we arrived and the rain began to let up. The driver parked the car and opened the door for us. We thanked them profusely, but they just smiled and left. We walked into the hotel, feeling exhausted but grateful. Angels had led us back to safety, and we knew that it was because we had trusted and believed in them.

I didn’t know if it was seconds or minutes before I came to myself. My head was spinning and dizzy. I couldn’t focus my eyes, and my vision was blurry. My hearing was like a poorly tuned radio that was under a pillow. My pacer helped to drag me off the ground and I managed to pull my torn-off leg back on. Then I forged with him. At first, I staggered, and then I walked. Suddenly, my whole body was cramping. But I knew I was strong enough to finish the race. Finally, those tottering walking steps turned into running again.
The final 2. 2 miles was short but long for me. The dizziness was worse, and my legs felt like lead weights. I walked again. But my son’s words echoed in my mind, “Dad, I know you will win the race.” Though my body screamed at me, I scraped the bottom of the barrel to run. Finally, I crossed the final time mat and collapsed to the ground, my body having given everything that it could. By some miracle, I set a new double amputee world record. I had battled with everything I had on the streets of Chicago, and I arose victorious.

I looked into his eyes in amazement. The sudden invitation was unexpected, especially after our recent disagreements. A warm feeling spread through my chest, melting away the icy distance that had formed between us. “Of course, Grant,” I replied, smiling broadly. “I’d love to run with you. It sounds like fun.” The look on his face, a mix of relief and excitement, told me he’d been hoping for this answer. In that instant, I realized how much I’d missed connecting with my son, the carefree little boy who once ran alongside me with endless energy.
The next morning, Grant and I began our first running session together. We talked about school, his friends, and even the music he loved, finding common ground amidst our differences. As we sweated and pushed through the last stretch, Grant grinned at me, his eyes shining with a newfound sense of camaraderie. “Thanks, Mom,” he said, panting. “This was awesome.” And in that moment, I knew that while our relationship might never be exactly the same as it was when he was little, we were forging a new bond, one built on mutual respect and shared experiences.

Looking at the money on the table, I stood there, shocked. For the rest of the day, I felt extremely guilty, with the innocent jogger and his “helplessness” on my mind. “How could I be so rude to him without knowing the truth? Why was it that the jogger gave me the money? I still remembered his frightened face when I scared him away like a monster. I decided to find a chance to apologize to him. The next morning, I got up and went to the park as usual, but not for jogging. I just hung around where I had met that jogger, but in vain.
But I didn’t give up finding him and for several days, I waited at the same place in the park. But to my disappointment, he didn’t turn up. It was almost a week later before I finally spotted him again. I, the “robber”, gave the $10 bill back to him and said sorry to him again and again. Fortunately, he forgave me for what I had done to him and said, “Oh, it doesn’t matter.” Many years have passed, but I can still feel my cheeks burning with shame. From the experience I have learned that it is too early to judge a person before you know the truth.

Paragraph 1
Mrs. Linqvist stared at the book, her expression unreadable. Slowly, she flipped through the ketchup-stained pages, her eyebrows furrowing. My palms grew sweaty as I watched her flip through the pages, some stained or crumpled. The library’s quiet hum amplified my pounding heart. Would she notice the torn pages? I clutched the straps of my backpack, my mind racing for excuses. Mrs. Linqvist cast a quick look at me, her lips tightened into a thin line. The silence stretched, suffocating. “Jackie,” she finally said, her voice calm but firm, “this book is beyond repair.” She held it up, revealing the dirty pages and dog teeth marks.
Paragraph 2
I recalling all the efforts made, my heart sank. I had broken the library’s three-strike rule. Swallowing hard, I explained the whole situation, from the frantic search at home to the chase after the dog. Mrs. Linqvist listened carefully, her expression softening a bit. To my surprise, she handed me a cleaning cloth. “Help tidy the shelves for the next hour,” she said with a faint smile, “we’ll consider this a special case, but remember, be more careful next time.” I nodded eagerly. While working, I learned the value of carefulness and responsibility. As I left the library, the sun set behind me, casting a warm glow, as if echoing the light of growth and understanding shining within me.

【答案】A week later, Jon received a call from the company. Shifting uneasily in his chair, he picked up the phone. “Yes, this is Jon,” he said, trying to keep his voice steady. I watched him, my heart pounding. As he continued to speak, his face lit up with an excited smile. When he hung up the phone, he turned to me, eyes shining. He told me that they were really impressed with his interview, but what really stood out were the thank-you notes. The CEO mentioned that he was touched by the notes and appreciated the effort Jon put into thanking everyone, including the receptionist. I felt a rush of pride and relief. I knew it would work.
The next day after work, I found a thank-you note on my bedside table. Surprised, I picked it up, unfolded it, and was greeted with Jon’s familiar handwriting. It was a thank-you note from Jon. He thanked me for pushing him to do his best and for teaching him the importance of gratitude, which had truly changed his life. As I read the note, tears welled up in my eyes. I had always believed in the power of gratitude and a thank-you note, but seeing it come full circle like this was more rewarding than I could have ever imagined. Jon was not only succeeding in his career but also growing into a thoughtful and compassionate man. And that was the greatest gift of all.

【答案】Para 1: As the rain poured hard, I made the decision not to leave this adorable animal out in the rain. I broke into a jog, with the little stray never leaving my side. Together, we jogged the final half-mile home in the rain. When I opened the door, the Terrier rushed in and ran straight to Megan. Megan and her dad rapidly fired questions regarding the little dog. Who? What? Where? None of my answers mattered once this bundle of energy jumped into Megan’s lap, sniffing her with her white nose. They seemed to share an instant connection, and Megan’s eyes lit up with delight.
Para 2: With the days going by, the presence of the dog brought about a positive change in our home. Megan and I found ourselves bonding over caring for the new addition to our family. We took turns walking her and teaching her tricks. The Terrier became a constant source of comfort and companionship for both Megan and me. We would often find ourselves sitting together on the couch, stroking her soft fur and sharing stories about our day. This cute Terrier not only found a home with us but also helped us discover a newfound understanding and appreciation for each other through these shared experience.

When the sun was near setting, Justine’s mom said she would drive us home. My heart sank as I envisioned her reaction to our dwelling. As we approached, anxiety tightened its grip on me. Justine’s eyes widened at the sight of the peeling paint and overgrown lawn, but to my surprise, she didn’t mock or criticize. Her understanding gaze softened any embarrassment I felt. I hesitated, then shared how my mom was trying hard to make things better despite our financial constraints. Before she left, she volunteered to help me paint the house. And we planned to finish it in a week.
The following week, we started the paint job. With Mr. Dudley finally providing the necessary supplies, our small team consisting of Justine, Andy, and myself started to paint. The once-spooky exterior now wore a fresh coat of sunny yellow. As the last brushstroke dried, I realized that the true beauty of a home isn’t just in its appearance but in the love and unity that reside within its walls. And as for Justine, she didn’t just visit our house again; she became a regular, proving that true friendship transcends the facades we’re sometimes afraid to show.

【答案】One possible version:
The last task of the day was to plant new flowers. Jason and Mike were given a variety of colorful flower bulbs to plant. Despite their initial reluctance, they found a rhythm as they dug holes, placed the bulbs, and covered them with soil. The repetitive motion of planting began to feel therapeutic, and Jason even started to enjoy the earthy smell of the freshly turned soil. Each flower they planted represented a small victory, and by the time they finished, the once-overgrown lawn looked vibrant and alive.
As the day ended, Jason walked back to his room. His room, usually a source of stress, now seemed too cluttered and disorganized. Inspired by the day’s activities, Jason decided to tackle the mess himself. He started by picking up the scattered clothes and organizing them in his closet. Next, he collected the empty chip bags and threw them away, and finally, he cleaned up the half-finished sodas from his desk. By the time he finished, his room looked almost unrecognizable—clean and tidy. Jason smiled, realizing that the labor education project had not only taught him about hard work but also about the value of taking care of his own space.

Paragraph 1: So the circle of new friends huddled again and decided the time was right for a merciful end. Given Love’s worsening condition, it seemed pointless to seek more medical treatments. As time ticked by, this urgently rallied group for a shared cause — to give all out to help stray animals — had no alternative but to allow euthanasia on Love immediately. Shortly thereafter, the freshly-repaired skin on the haunches saw the termination of this suffering creature. Always keeping her company was Shuran, who, grieved at Love’s death, could not help but choke with sobs. “You give it your best but it was beyond our ability to give life itself”, I tried to soothe her.
Paragraph2: Love did not die alone, but spent her final days with us all feeling full of love. When she lay dying, she was attended to like an angel by a random circle of caring people drawn together by empathy for stray animals struggling to live on the harsh streets. Her unhealed skin did hurt but her heart was healed in the presence of her own guardian angel, my friend Shuran. The emotional pain her death brought us was tremendous, the sense of helplessness immense. Nevertheless, we gave it our best, as I once did to Lucky. So to some extent, Love, dying immersed in endless love, was just as lucky as Lucky.

1. (24-25高二下·浙江绍兴·期末)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was in 7th grade, my family had to move from Luhansk, Ukraine, to Kyiv. I felt lonely and spent most of my time on phone.
My mom confronted me about my bad grades and wasting time on my phone instead of doing homework. She kept asking me questions from my biology book and discovered I hadn’t read any of the material. I was behind in chemistry too. As our back and forth got more heated, my mom seemed to grasp how depressed and lonely I was.
I sat alone at my desk, sour and thoughtful. My grandma, who lived with us, came into my room and put a hand on my shoulder.
“Hey there,” she said softly.
“Hi.” I didn’t look up from my notebook.
“I can help you study chemistry,” she proposed. I looked at her. That idea sounded nice. “How about we start tomorrow by reading the first pages of your book?”
And so we did. It was late in the school year to start the chemistry book. I would read a chapter or two a day, and then my grandmother and I would talk about it and answer questions to make sure I understood the material before moving on.
My grandma had helped me with homework as a little kid, but this felt more emotional. I allowed myself to be more vulnerable (脆弱) than usual. It was the kind of human connection I’d been missing.
Progressing through the chemistry book with my grandma, I felt safe and supported, as if under a warm blanket. Our studying together pushed me toward this calmer kind of happiness.
Soon after this breakthrough, however, we moved to the U. S. . Screen addiction in the U. S. is different than it was for me in Ukraine. Social media is the most powerful presence for American teenagers, and I was trying to fit in. I downloaded TikTok. But then the app started to feed me brain rot—trending videos of mindless memes that took over the conversations around me. Soon, I felt pressure to be cool by keeping up with them.

Paragraph 1:
I started to think about what made me happy.

Paragraph 2:
Also, I’ve made a good group of friends.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:

Like all the kids in the neighborhood, I was afraid of Joe — an old man who lived alone and rarely spoke to any of us. Joe had a nice car and kept it spotless and parked outside the fence. I often played in the neighborhood, but I tried to stay away from his car.
One day, while riding my newly obtained, used bicycle, I hit a mud pool near Joe’s car. I was so concerned about splashing mud on his clean car that I lost my balance. I panicked as my handlebars slid down the side of Joe’s car.
Joe walked out of his house. He looked at the big scratch (刮痕) on his perfectly kept car and asked if I was hurt. I was hurt. My knee was black-and-blue and my leg had a deep scratch from the rusty (生锈的) pedal that had no pedal pads (踏板胶套). I told him I was okay and kept apologizing for the damage I caused to his car.
Joe signaled me to follow him without saying anything. I didn’t dare disobey him. He led me into his living room and went into another room. My heart raced so fast that I paid no attention to my pain. Then Joe came back carrying a dish pan, a towel, some bandages, and a bottle of peroxide (过氧化氢). He told me to hold my leg out over the pan so he could put the liquid on my leg. I obeyed.
I realized that Joe was not even as scary as my parents, who would punish me severely if they knew about the accident. I asked him what I could do to make up and he asked me to do his grocery shopping for a month. Sometimes, after delivering his groceries, I played cards with him and I learned that his son moved to another country and that he really missed his granddaughter. “She’s a lot like you,” he said.
At Christmastime, I bought Joe a box of candy. He thanked me, obviously moved. “Isn’t that what granddaughters are supposed to do?” I asked. After I said that, I wondered if I had overstepped because Joe didn’t say anything else.

【答案】

I stood in the school auditorium(礼堂),VR headset on my head. The virtual forest buzzed with life—3D fireflies danced above a stream, their glow waving on the water. My team had spent months programming this for the Eco Youth Summit, to show how deforestation harms wildlife. The air smelled of fresh paint, and whispers from the audience reached me through the headset.
But as judges approached, the headset suddenly went dark. Panic surged through me. I tore off the device to see Maya frozen at the control panel(控制板). “Server crashed,” she mouthed, hands shaking over the black screen. “Our project—it’s all gone.” Murmurs rose in the crowd, and my neck burned under the stage lights.
I scanned the judges, their expectant smiles fading. A man in green tapped his writing board; the woman beside him frowned at her watch. Then my gaze met a girl in the front row, holding a stuffed owl(猫头鹰). Her pigtails bobbed as she leaned forward, but when I shook my head, her eyes filled with disappointment—mirroring my sister’s look when a trip is canceled.
“Wait,” I claimed, grabbing Maya’s arm. She shrank back, but I pressed on: “What if we tell the story without VR?” For a moment, she stared, then nodded sharply. Stepping to the stage edge, I said, “This forest isn’t just code. It’s a real home where owls nest...” My voice cracked, but words poured out—about drying rivers, about birds losing habitats.
When I finished, the auditorium fell silent. Suddenly the girl rose to her feet, with her sneakers making a sharp noise: “Instead of a virtual forest, can we plant a real tree?” The audience laughed softly, and judges exchanged nods. Maya’s hand found mine, steady and warm. Though the VR failed, a definite idea had taken root.

It was early autumn when the school organized a weekend camping trip to a nearby mountain forest. The air was crisp, the leaves were turning golden, and the students were buzzing with excitement. After weeks of studying and exams, everyone welcomed the chance to enjoy nature and relax outdoors.
Among the students were four close friends: Leo, Eric, Jason, and Alice. Though their personalities were quite different, they made a great team. Alice, the only girl in the group, was smart and well-prepared. She had brought along a compass, a map, and even a first-aid kit.
After arriving at the campsite, the students pitched their tents, gathered firewood, and helped prepare a simple meal. The campsite was surrounded by tall pine trees, and in the distance, a mountain stream could be heard. The teachers reminded everyone to stay within the marked area and never go off-trail alone.
After lunch, the students were allowed to explore in small groups. Leo’s group decided to follow a trail leading up a hill. According to Alice, there was a small lookout point that offered a beautiful view of the valley.
As they walked, Jason kept running ahead, calling the others to hurry. “Let’s see what’s up there!” he shouted. Alice followed closely behind, holding the map. Leo walked at a steady pace, checking that no one fell behind. Eric lagged at the end, clearly nervous about being so deep in the forest.
The path became narrower as they climbed. Birds chirped in the trees, and dry leaves crunched under their shoes. The sunlight filtered through the branches above, casting dancing shadows on the ground. After about an hour, they reached the edge of a rocky area covered in leaves. The trail began to twist more than expected, and many landmarks they passed didn’t match what was on the map.
“I think the viewpoint is just beyond this slope (斜坡),” Jason said, pointing excitedly.
Leo looked uncertain. “Let’s be careful. It looks slippery.”
But before anyone could stop him, Jason had already climbed ahead.

【答案】

The school festival was buzzing with excitement, all because of a new contest called “Innovate Your Way.” This contest was all about making a costume that was as unique and creative as possible, showcasing what one loves the most.
Lily Adams was surrounded by classmates with cool ideas. One classmate said excitedly, “I’m going to be the whole solar system, with planets circling around me!” One boasted (吹嘘), “I’ll redefine innovation. I will become a walking smartphone from the future, showing the digital age with interactive apps and games.”
Meanwhile, another one came up with the idea to dress up as a live weather forecast. He planned to attach LED screens to his outfit, displaying different weather patterns. This costume would not just show the weather but also change with real-time updates, combining technology and creativity in a way the festival had never seen.
Feeling overwhelmed, Lily wasn’t sure what to do. Her friends had such amazing ideas, and she hadn’t even picked a costume yet. She shared her worries with her friend Noah, saying,” I can’t make up my mind. Every idea seems too hard to do or just not exciting enough.”
Noah, always wise, had a great suggestion. “Why don’t you make a costume about gardening? You love it, and it’s something unique to you,” he said. Lily was unsure because the contest was just a few days away. “I don’t know if there’s enough time to make something like that from the beginning,” she worried. But Noah encouraged her, “You have a special talent for making something wonderful out of simple things. Use what’s around you.”
Inspired by Noah’s words, Lily thought over her collection of plants and flowers. Arriving home, she noticed the pile of old gardening magazines and a forgotten green tarp(防水布)in the garage.

She spent hours perfecting her creation, adding little details here and there until it was just right.
The day of the contest finally arrived. Lily was nervous as she walked onto the stage, but as soon as she saw the look of amazement on the judges’ faces, she knew she had made the right choice. Her costume was unlike anything anyone had ever seen before. It was a living, breathing garden, complete with real plants and flowers. The judges were blown away by her creativity and originality, and Lily won first place in the contest! From that day on, Lily felt more confident in herself and her abilities. She realized that it’s important to follow your passions and do what you love.

It was 11 p. m. when Alex Conrad saw the woman on the Main Street Bridge in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. She was standing by the railing, peering down at the rushing river. At her feet was what appeared to be a backpack; maybe she was fishing, he thought.
As he crossed the quarter-mile-long bridge again after getting something from home for his friend’s party,Conrad saw the woman standing in the same spot. Something didn’t sit right. Why would she be fishing this late at night—in December? He pulled a U-turn and parked some 20 feet away with his hazard lights (汽车危险警示灯) flashing, blocking one of the four lanes. He stepped out of his car and got a clearer picture of the scene. The woman was in her 20s, dressed in pants and a heavy coat. What he’d thought was a backpack was in fact a rope pooled by her feet. One end was tied to a bridge post. The other, around her neck.
“Hey, what’s going on?” Conrad called out. He didn’t acknowledge the rope because he didn’t want to let on that he knew exactly what was going on. She spoke a little, but he kept inquiring, eventually pulling from her that she was going through a particularly rough time. She was jobless, not doing well in school- in short, life wasn’t working out as she’d hoped.
“Not everything goes as planned,” agreed Conrad. He started talking about the ups and downs he’d faced in his life. As he talked, he inched closer.
When she mentioned that, on top of everything else, her car had broken down, Conrad chuckled. “Well, that’s better than when my friend rolled his car,” he said. “Too much power for him.” The woman laughed. He told a few more jokes about his friends, and the dumb things they’ve done, just to get her mind off stuff.
Conrad is a quiet guy, not given to gabbing (喋喋不休). But for the next hour he found enough topics of conversation to keep the woman engaged and even laughing. She grew comfortable enough to let him get within a few feet of her. Then a switch seemingly went off.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:

Resting on my sofa after school, I gazed at my shelf of glistening gold medals and trophies (奖杯). A certain trophy caught my eye and I picked it up. “Sunshine Primary School 2016 Basketball-Champion.” As I admired that trophy, I began to recall those incidents leading to how I received it.
When I was in Primary Five, I was in the basketball school team. Every month, we would have a basketball match against another school’s basketball team. In spite of the amount of training we had, we had never won a single match before. That was due to our lack of teamwork. Our team would argue over little things and then, we would refuse to play after it. Our coach was at his wit’s end. Looking at the number of matches we had lost, I knew we had to do something.
During one of our training sessions, our team split into two to have a match against each other. “Three, two, one, start!” our basketball coach, Coach Leong, yelled. John, who was in my team, managed to grab the ball that Coach Leong threw in the air. From the moment John grabbed the ball, he refused to let anyone take it. “Pass the ball to me, John!” I exclaimed. I was at a good position to shoot the ball into the hoop then. To my dismay, John made an annoying face at me. Out of frustration, I leapt towards John and made an attempt to snatch the ball, which turned out to be a battle between John and I. Coach Leong shook his head and boomed like an active volcano, “Children! Is this the type of behaviour I should be seeing from you? The match is in four weeks and if you are going to behave like this during the match, you will bring shame to me, the school and yourselves! Don’t you even know the importance of teamwork?” Coach Leong sighed and gave us a disappointed look. It seemed as if he had some sad news he hadn’t announced to us, but could not bear to do so. I was right.

The day of the basketball match came.

【答案】
That day, Coach Leong announced that he would be retiring after our competition. His voice trembled with emotion as he shared the news, casting a somber mood over the team. Understanding dawned upon us — the upcoming game wasn’t just about winning; it was our last chance to honor Coach Leong’s dedication and years of hard work. We doubled our efforts during practices, focusing on coordination, trust, and passing rather than individual glory. Through sweat and perseverance, we gradually learned to function as a cohesive unit.
The day of the basketball match arrived. For one final pep talk, Coach Leong’s eyes gleamed with a mixture of hope and pride, reminding us that this game was for him, for our school, and most importantly, for ourselves. Stepping onto the court, we played like never before — passing precisely, communicating effectively, and supporting each other at every turn. As the final whistle blew, marking our victory, tears welled up in Coach Leong’s eyes. Holding that championship trophy high, we knew we had not only won the game but also rediscovered the true essence of teamwork.

The title of “Aaron’s younger brother” was given to me when I had won my first tennis tournament at the age of six. Whenever I stepped onto a tennis court, it was as though a name label with “Aaron’s younger brother” in big letters had been already stuck onto me. All people had to do was refer to the imaginary label and they would know how to address me.
“Why don’t the two of you play doubles together?” This was a question repeatedly asked during my sign-ups for every tennis tournament, including this one. The answer was simple — I wanted to defeat Aaron, my older brother whose fame had made me a nameless tennis player. As I shook Aaron’s hand at the start of the match, I stared at him with determination, hoping this match could change everything.
“I’m going to beat you today.” I gathered the confidence to claim over the outcome of the match. “Are you sure, Dallon?” Aaron laughed sneeringly (轻蔑地) as he turned his back towards me and walked away. For a brief moment, I regretted that display of over-confidence.
I nervously shifted my weight from one foot to the other. The tennis court seemed to stretch out further than usual, but I could still make out the self-satisfied look on Aaron’s face. My sweaty hands tightened my racket (球拍) — the fifth one passed down to me from Aaron. If I did win today, it would enable me to get a new racket for a change.
It was definitely a close game. I was persevering as expected, but I was not sure how long it would take before I quit. We were down to the last round, neck and neck in points. I was fuelled with adrenaline (肾上腺素) as I inched closer to the possibility of victory. Just then, my knees weak, I made a mistake and missed the ball.

【答案】One possible version:

It was Mar 8, 1970. Henry, the paperboy, finished delivering his newspapers on Maple Street. He was to meet the chief editor of the newspaper The Gazette. “Maybe I’d get a longer route,” he smiled.
“Hello, Henry. Wow! Strong handshake!” The chief editor shook hands with Henry.
“Thanks. It’s from rolling and delivering all those newspapers.”
“So, about the newspapers ……” the editor paused. Henry’s smile faded.
“We’re closing shop. Last July, the whole world saw the moon landing on TV —— live. Television is how people get their news today. Local newspapers are the first to close.” He shrugged.
“Um, no! It’s sad. People won’t get their neighborhood news anymore,” said Henry. The editor nodded and sighed. Then, they waved goodbye.
A week later, Henry wondered if his old customers on Maple Street missed The Gazette as much as he did. He started out in the morning on his old route with a notebook. First stop: No.26. Mr. Grady answered when asked, “I sure miss the days of reading the weeks’ happenings in The Gazette. By the way, I have a pile of comics (漫画) from The Gazette. Think someone would want them?”
“Maybe. I’ll ask around.” Henry took a note in his notebook.
He stopped at No. 27. Mrs. Burke was busy feeding her three babies. Henry suggested, “You should hire a babysitter.”
“Definitely! I was going to put an ad in The Gazette, but …… Know any neighbor with experience?”
Mr. Simon was at No.28, carrying his guitar. “Hey, Henry. My band is having a concert in the park next Friday. Tell all your friends.”
As Henry made more notes, an idea flashed across his mind: maybe he could create a newsletter (简报) for the neighborhood. But how would he print it?
He headed to the library and found the librarian. Seconds later, in front of a mimeograph machine (滚筒油印机), the librarian turned a handle and a printed sheet rolled out. “Will mimeographed copies work?” she asked.

Information in hand, Henry knocked at Mr. Trotta’s door and pleaded for his support in publishing his first Oak Street News, who approved almost immediately. Soon, Henry’s tabloid was in circulation, which he cheerfully delivered from door to door as before.
The neighbors on Maple Street were amazed at the newsletter. Neigh bons applauded the idea of sharing their needs in a communal newspaper, which really addressed their immediate concern in a practical and efficient way. As Mrs Burke successfully found an ideal babysitter, Mr Simon secured a large following for his concert and Mr Grady who happily reunited with his kids. That Tuesday started out just like any other summer day. Mom dropped me off with Gram and Gramps before going to work. The morning was already steamy and sticky. My shirt was damp against my back.
For the millionth time I wished Gram and Gramps had air conditioning. But if I complained, Gram would just say, “Nonsense to pay an arm and a leg for something people have survived thousands of years without.”
Gram stood at the sink looking cool while Gramps sat with me at the kitchen table staring at the sports section. “Come on, you two, why don’t you go sit on the porch (门廊) so you can feel a light wind?” said Gram. I jumped up, pulling on Gramps’s arm. I didn’t think he had heard Gram.
“George!” Gram rushed to pull her massive husband to his feet. “Are your hearing aids turned up?” She began digging around in Gramps’s ear like she was changing a radio station. Even though Gram liked to act tough, I saw the way she looked after Gramps, like Mom looked after me.
Once we were settled, Gram got us both ice creams. I laughed as a big drop landed on Gramps’s shirt. Gramps chuckled (咯咯笑), too. “Your mother will be after me for that.”
“You mean my gram,” I corrected. I was used to Gramps thinking I was Mom. Mom told me Gramps had something in his brain that made him forget things, so he needed extra reminding. I know now it’s called Alzheimer (老年痴呆症).
Gram stepped out as we finished our ice creams. “We’re going to take a trip into town to do some shopping,” she announced. “Here, Melanie,” she said, handing me the shopping list. “You’re in charge of the list and telling me what I need.”
Inside the house the phone rang. Gram left her purse with Gramps, instructing him to clean himself up with tissues in it. Then she disappeared into the house, and Gramps began digging in her purse. When he took out Gram’s car key, he smiled.

【答案】

In art class, my friend Mariana and I had explored various creative techniques throughout the semester. We made clay pots, shoebox collages (拼贴画), pencil drawings, and even paintings using only small dots of paint. Each project helped us develop our artistic skills in different ways.
For our final assignment, Ms. Williams handed out special art kits. “You’ll each paint a portrait of someone important to you,” she explained. The kits contained small canvases, sets of vibrant paints, and two foam brushes (海绵刷).” Feel free to express yourself in any style you choose,” she added with an encouraging smile.
Mariana and I exchanged a knowing wink and immediately knew what we wanted to paint. As we packed our kits after class, we could barely contain our excitement. “I’m going to paint you in Leonardo da Vinci’s style,” I told Mariana as we walked to her house. She immediately struck a dramatic pose, crossing her arms and flashing an exaggerated Mona Lisa smile. “Call it Mariana Lisa,” she joked, making me laugh.
Our artistic planning was interrupted when our friend Jasmine came cycling toward us, her face glowing with excitement. “You have to come meet Ginger!” she called out. “My family just got the most adorable golden retriever puppy!”
At Jasmine’s house, we were greeted by a ball of golden energy. Ginger bounded around us, her fluffy tail wagging nonstop as she chased tennis balls across the yard. We kept playing with her until she was completely worn out, curling up in a sunny spot for a nap.
“Whenever she’s not running around or chewing whatever she can get her paws on, she’s sound asleep in dreamland,” said Jasmine. She led the way to the kitchen. “Do you have time for a snack?” “Sure!” we said.
After we munched (用力咀嚼) on some yummy snacks at the kitchen table, Mariana and I stood up to leave. But when we went to pick up our art bags by the front door, we found a big surprise!

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】

Lena’s father had always been a man of few words. Since her mother passed away five years ago, he had shouldered the responsibility of raising her alone, working double shifts (班次) as a taxi driver to support his family. Their small apartment was always filled with an unspoken tension — the kind that comes from two people living together but never truly connecting, except that, each night, he’d leave a glass of warm milk on her desk with his usual “Don’t stay up too late.”
One Saturday, while cleaning the store room, Lena came across an old shoebox. Driven by curiosity, she took it out and couldn’t wait to find out what was inside. When she opened it, a scent of old paper greeted her. Inside were many black-and-white photos from before she was born. One photo caught her eye — her young father kneeling in a sunny field, smiling happily as he took pictures with a camera. He looked so different from the tired man she knew now.
That evening, as they sat across from each other at their usual silent dinner, Lena gathered her courage. “Dad,” she began hesitantly, “I found some old photos today...”, Her father’s fork froze mid-air. He quickly looked at her, then away. “That was a lifetime ago,” he murmured, pushing his food around his plate. After a brief silence, he added quietly, “Had to sell that camera when you started middle school,” The way his voice cracked on the last word made Lena's heart ache.
The next day, she searched online and found Thompson’s Vintage Camera Shop — a family-owned store just three blocks from her school. Mr. Thompson, a kind-eyed man in his sixties, had a similar camera her father once owned. When she explained her situation, his face softened, “How about this?” he said, “You help me around the shop after school for a month and the camera is yours.

【答案】参考范文:

It was still light out and Dad wasn’t home yet. He worked all day cleaning pools. Mom told us we needed to wait for Dad so all of us could eat dinner together. It meant I could spend more time outside playing basketball with my brother.
Before COVID (新冠肺炎), there had been more money to spend and life had been normal. Dad had bought us a backboard and hoop (篮筐) and had paid someone to install a tall metal pole on the side of the driveway so we could have our own basketball court.
We came pretty close to spending as much of the day as we could on the court. We practiced all sorts of shots, holding a ball and sending it into the air and waiting for it to drop into the basket. It felt like magic — all the problems of the world seemed to fade away — and I felt like I was the magician making the magic happen each time I arced the ball (投篮) toward the basket and watched it fly toward its destination.
Dad once told me he had felt pretty much the same way about cleaning pools. It had been like being a magician, he said, turning the water from cloudy to clear. Lately, though, it didn’t seem like Dad had seen a lot of magic anywhere. He told us he’d lost some customers to COVID, to job losses.
I heard the familiar engine clunk-clunking-click. It was earlier than when Dad usually arrived home. “Hi guys!” Dad said as he got off the car. His shoulders sank heavily, and he couldn’t hide the worry in his eyes. He stood a moment by the side of the car to stretch his arms and catch his breath, and for a moment he closed his eyes. In that moment his face was caught in the fading rays of the sun, and the light revealed a lot more wrinkles than I remembered. He might have thought of himself as a magician with water, but he couldn’t make these worry lines on his forehead or the new wrinkles around his eyes disappear.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:

Vivie woke up with the feeling that something special was supposed to happen. Was it Saturday, pancake day? Were her grandma Nona coming over? No, it wasn’t either of those things. After a quick breakfast, she brushed her teeth but left her hair messy and headed to her room. A shiny pink dress lay across the bed.
“Mom, is it my birthday?” she yelled.
Her mom replied, “It’s school picture day, honey!”
Vivie’s eyes widened with excitement. She pictured herself sitting in front of the giant blue screen, smiling brightly. Then, her excitement faded as her gaze landed on the pink dress her mom had picked out. She hated that dress. Her mom suggested other clothes, but none of them worked for Vivie. She didn’t want the childish teddy bear skirt. She wanted to wear herself, not someone else’s idea of pretty. So she decided to pick her own clothes.
She looked around, grabbing whatever twinkled, or made her face curve into a smile: a leopard-print T-shirt, a blue tutu(芭蕾舞短裙), orange tight pants. Her purple cowgirl boots winked at her from the corner. She grabbed Nona’s old beads, wrapping them around her waist, and slipped in a dazzling sweater.
“HURRY UP OR WE’LL BE LATE!” Her mom’s shout pierced(穿透)through the air.
Vivie added a few finishing touches and raced downstairs. She turned around and around, eyes sparkling with pride. Her mom froze, sighing, “I want you to look nice for the photo”. Vivie explained that each piece had a special meaning to her: the leopard shirt because she loved cats, the tutu for her ballerina dreams...
The car ride was thick with silence. Vivie didn’t like feeling bad in her favorite clothes. She pressed her nose against the car window, looking out. Outside, a boy caught her eye, standing out boldly. He wore a bright green cape tied around his neck and super-shiny purple shoes. It was her classmate, Joe.
When she arrived at the school, the gym was full of kids in neat clothes waiting for their turn to stand in front of the big blue screen.

As she tried to slip into the corner, a voice pierced through the noise, “You look cool!”
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Jennifer worked with her mother in their vegetable garden every day. The produce from their garden was sold at the farmer's market. This is how they made their living. Jennifer often pretended the plants she tended were beautiful tulips, like Mrs. Talia’s prize flowers. “Foolish girl!” her mother scolded. “Flowers can't be eaten! Tend to the vegetables. That's our living.”
Jennifer knew her mother was right. The only person in the village who made money selling flowers was Mrs. Talia. She grew tulips and sold them to local flower shops. Every year she won first prize at the Tulip Festival. Other contestants whispered that Mrs. Talia used magic to grow her tulips. How else could she win first prize twenty years in a row?
Jennifer envied Mrs. Talia. If she could sell flowers like Mrs. Talia, she would be able to buy things for her mother. But tulips were expensive to start, and Jennifer could only dream about growing them.
One day, Jennifer visited Mrs. Talia to see her flowers. Mrs. Talia was inspecting her tulips when she arrived. The garden of flowers springing up thrilled Jennifer. Mrs. Talia shattered her daydream. “Spying on me again!”Mrs. Talia frowned. Jennifer took a deep breath and explained she came only to see her flowers, hoping to grow such beautiful tulips and win a prize at the festival like her.
“You! Win a prize growing flowers?”Mrs. Talia chuckled and told Jennifer the secret to growing prize tulips had been passed down to her from past generations of her family. Mrs. Talia patted her shoulder and said sticking to vegetables was a better choice for her. Mrs. Talia returned to her gardening, ignoring the sad look on Jennifer’s face. Then she pulled up what looked like a weed. “What's that?” Jennifer asked. Mrs. Talia said it was only a shabby plant and then threw it over the fence into the field beside the garden.
Jennifer smiled and had an idea. She bowed farewell to Mrs. Talia and went out of the garden gate. Jennifer looked down at the discarded plant on the village path and glanced back. Mrs. Talia was busy minding her prize tulips. Jennifer quickly bent over and picked up the plant before rushing home.

【答案】Jennifer wondered what she should do with her plant. It suddenly occurred to her there was a quiet spot behind the cottage, a perfect place to grow for her little plant. Delighted at the thought of owning her own secret garden, she transplanted the tired flower carefully, exactly as Mrs. Talia did. Jennifer shared her secret with no one. She weeded and watered the recovering plant, whispering her dream of flower-growing glory to the little plant. Time spent with the little plant made Jennifer’s long days tending vegetables bearable. Finally, her tireless efforts paid off. Each time Jennifer visited her little plant, it looked greener and taller, giving her an increasing hope that she might win a prize at the festival.
Jennifer got up on festival morning. Her heart pounding with anticipation, she went to greet her vibrant, exotic flower. With a mix of pride and nervousness, she carried it to the festival, where it stood out among the rows of tulips. The villagers were captivated by its beauty, and the judges were astounded. As the prizes were announced, Jennifer’s flower won the hearts of all .Mrs. Talia’s mouth dropped open at the result and came to ask what her secret of planting flowers was. She mentioned it was being able to do something she enjoyed and trying her best. It turned out her mother was also at the festival. Shocked and proud, her mother said in a whisper “Proud of you and your dream.” A surge of warmth ran through her, offering her the energy to carry on.

“Class, please line up!” called Ms. Baroni, Jenna’s Taekwondo (跆拳道) instructor. Jenna was excited when Ms. Baroni announced Marti, Jenna’s best friend, would be taking lessons too. Everyone’s warm welcome made Marti blush, and Jenna walked over to comfort her.
After warm-up exercises, Ms. Baroni divided everyone into color-belt groups. Even though Jenna was a yellow belt and a level above Marti, Ms. Baroni asked them to work together. Jenna nodded and demonstrated (展示) a front kick confidently. Marti copied it. Her kick was as high as Jenna’s shoulder. Then came a burst of cheers from Ms. Baroni behind. She spent the next five minutes showing Marti moves.
Jenna threw herself against the wall, staring at Marti copying everything Ms. Baroni did. The more Marti did, the more praise she earned from Ms. Baroni. What if Marti became better than her? What if Marti became Ms. Baroni’s favorite student? Jenna was practicing her form (招式) halfheartedly when she heard a scolding. “Watch your form!”Jenna turned and noticed Ms. Baroni looking directly at her. Nothing could have been worse. But afterwards, she heard Ms. Baroni’s encouraging words. “You’ve memorized your form perfectly, but your moves could be better. Try the side kick again.”
However, the encouragement didn’t work. The moment the class was over, Jenna grabbed her bag and hurried outside. She had planned to wait for Marti, but now she preferred to be left alone.
For the following weeks, Marti continued to impress their teacher with her skills. And as Marti turned into a star student, Jenna became less and less excited about taekwondo.
One day, Marti told Jenna the good news that she was ready to test for her new belt with Ms. Baroni’s recognition. Jenna stopped in her tracks and said sourly. “It’s more challenging than you imagine.” Marti looked disappointed. “You don’t think I’m skillful enough to test yet?” Jenna felt her face flushed and denied. She didn’t like feeling jealous, but she couldn’t help it. She wasn’t ready for her next belt because she hadn’t been practicing every day.

A week later, at the belt testing, Jenna saw Martin warming up. After warm-up exercises, Marti took a deep breath and started to show her forms, demonstrating the front kick and side kick with confidence. After her last form shown in a perfect way, floods of cheers and applause came from Ms Baroni and audience present. Undoubtedly, Marti passed the belt test. At the sight of Marti’s excited expression, Jenna was overwhelmed by a sense of envy. “How could she make it?” Jenna murmured. Then came Ms Baroni’s voice. “Jenna deserves success. She nearly employed all her spare time to practice.”
Jenna thought, “I don’t practice that much in a week!” No wonder that Marti performed so well. Reflecting on what she had done before, Jenna felt ashamed of her behavior and regretted not practicing attentively. As Jenna was immersed in thoughts, Marti approached and invited her to celebrate this exciting occasion. At that moment, Jenna realized the holy friendship between them could not be defeated by jealousy and spilt out all her inner feelings to Marti. With a mixture of astonishment and guilt, Marti hugged Jenna tightly and made an appointment that she would practice with Jenna every day.

After practice, Jonah and David, his best friend, sat together and waited for their ride. Jonah expressed how he wished things hadn’t changed and that he could still be with his own dad, not a stepfather. David comforted Jonah it was no big deal. “I have a stepmother and stepbrother too,” David smiled, “They’re just Mom and Dennis now. Give it a chance.” Jonah let out a breath, still unsure about the performance tonight. Still unsure about everything!
Back at the apartment, Jonah found Zoe in her costume, but something was wrong. Her arms tight across her chest, her eyes were filled with tears. Wondering what was up, Jonah asked Mom, who explained Zoe was just too nervous to go on stage.
Huh! This should have been the best thing that could have happened — the possibility of not going to the performance. But somehow it wasn’t. Zoe had practiced so hard. She’d reminded Jonah at least a thousand times where she would be onstage.

Having thought twice, Jonah went forward. “Zoe, I’m here. You can do this,” he said softly. He sat next to her and took her hands in his. He felt the trembling in her fingers and knew she was really scared. But he also felt something else — a sense of determination. “I know you’re nervous, but you’ve worked so hard for this. You’re going to be amazing,” he said, trying to sound as confident as he could. Zoe looked up at him, her eyes still filled with tears but also a spark of hope. “You really think so?” she asked. “Of course I do,” Jonah replied, giving her a reassuring smile. “Now, let’s go show them what you’ve got.” With that, Jonah helped Zoe stand up and they walked out the door, ready to face the stage together.

My fourth of July vacation began with a scream. “Tara!” I jumped, my eyelids snapping open. I realized that my four-year-old sister, Tammy, was staring down at me. I struggled to push her off me as she bounced on my legs. She screamed, and then ran out of my room.
It was as if Tammy never did anything wrong. If Tammy got angry, Mom would say she was trying to get her point across. When Tammy broke a plate, Dad said she was just “helping” me empty the dishwasher. When Tammy scribbled (乱涂乱画) all over the wall, instead of scolding her, my parents chuckled and said, “She’s turning into an artist just like you, Tara.”
We were flying to Utah to visit my grandma for the Fourth of July. Every year I draw Grandma a picture for her birthday, but I sighed as I considered about what picture I should draw this time. When we walked off the plane, I was relieved to see the smiling face of my grandma. We raced over to her.
“Hi, sweetheart.” Grandma got down on one knee to hug Tammy and then swung her in the air. Tammy screamed with laughter. Then Grandma hugged me. “It’s so good to see you too, Tara.”
After six hours of flight, I was exhausted—six hours of listening to Tammy scream with delight again and again and again. I wanted to be alone, so I went outside with my sketchbook and colored pencils. Looking at the scenery, I felt inspired to work on Grandma’s drawing. As I admired the shading on the mountains and the swirls of the sunset, I smiled to myself and thought, this is the best picture I have ever made.
Before I finished my picture, Mom was calling me inside for dinner. When I walked back into the room, my heart stopped. Tammy was lying on the bed, scribbling on a piece of paper. When Tammy saw me frozen in the doorway, she jumped from the bed. She ran over to me and grinned. “I drew you a picture.” she shouted.
“Out!” I screamed angrily, and she ran out of the room. I ran over to the bed. I picked up the paper, and it was just as I’d feared. My drawing had black scribbles all over it.

【答案】

Karie checked the words on her spelling test. If she got 100 percent, she’d win her class’s Spelling Challenge and a brand-new dictionary. Besides, Ms. Iris had promised to do handstand (手倒立) if anyone got perfect score.
Three more words to go. N-i-c-e-l-y. Q-u-i-c-k-l-y. H-o-n-e-s-t-y. Wait! She’d spelled honesty, not honestly! She erased the t-y and wrote l-y before handing in her paper. “I’ll correct these while you’re having a break,” Ms. Iris said.
After the break, Karie hurried into the classroom. She was on pins and needles in her seat, tapping her pen and crossing her fingers for luck. Just then, Ms. Iris walked to the front, and like a gymnast, she flipped (翻转) into the air. “Congratulations, Karie! You did it!” she announced while upside down. The whole class erupted! Ms. Iris righted herself and presented Karie with her prize. Karie grinned (露齿而笑) as she read the label on the box: To Karie, for her perfect score in spelling.
“Everything OK?” Mom asked as Karie burst through the front door after school.
“Everything’s PERFECT!” Karie shouted, showing Mom her spelling test and prize, “but I nearly misspelled honesly ...” Wait! H-O-N-E-S-L-Y! Karie felt butterflies in her stomach. “Karie, what’s the matter?” inquired Mom gently. “I don’t feel so good”, Karie said. “Probably too much excitement.” Mom rubbed her back and got her a cup of tea. After a few drinks, Karie walked with heavy steps down the hall and fell onto her bed. How could she tell the class she hadn’t earned the prize after all?
Soon her sister Kevin came in. The smell of her pizza floated in the air. Karie remembered last time when the salesclerk gave them too much change after their purchase of pizza, mom insisted on returning the money. But Kevin thought it was the salesclerk’s fault instead of theirs. If Kevin had been right, then wasn’t it Ms Iris’s fault in the first place? And if she just picked up her pen, and put the missing t back in, no one would ever know.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Possible version 1:
Para. 1:
Ms. Iris was unlocking the classroom door when Karie got to school the next morning. No sooner had Karie caught sight of Ms. Iris than she ducked her head. A faint blush crept over her face. “Good morning, Karie! Are you alright?” Ms. Iris grinned at her, stroking her head gently. “I ...,” Karie’s voice cracked all of a sudden, as if she had to choke her words out of throat. After a few seconds of struggles, Karie plucked up her courage to return her dictionary to Ms. Iris, murmuring, “I can’t keep this. I misspelled honestly and you didn’t catch it.”
Para. 2:
For a moment, Ms. Iris stood quietly examining the label on the dictionary. Next to her stood nervous Karie, her nails digging into her palms. Embarrassment fell upon the whole vacant classroom. It was at the very moment that Ms. Iris picked up the pen, and replaced the label with a new one, with “for honesty” on it. Casting a glimpse at the label, Karie stared at Ms. Iris, her jaw dropping, “I get to keep this? Honestly?” Ms. Iris flashed a smile, “Yes, for your real honesty.” At this, Karie was overwhelmed with rapture, eyes glistening and lips curving into a radiant smile.Possible version 2:
Para. 1:
Ms. Iris was unlocking the classroom door when Karie got to school the next morning. Glancing at Karie’s figure, Ms. Iris flashed an affectionate smile to her, who was momentarily at a total loss. Somewhat awkward, Karie forced a reluctant smile before making the ultimate decision.
Para 2:
For a moment, Ms. Iris stood quietly examining the label on the dictionary. On sober reflection, she picked up the pen and added something. Then Ms. Iris glimpsed at the girl curling up with lips drooping, who could even picture classmates’ teasing and the teacher’s harsh denial.

The more you trust and believe in angels, the more they will pour their blessings upon you.
It was our first day to explore the city of Moscow on our own, without a friend or tour guide leading the way. My husband and I had completed a week-long tour and felt confident that we could wander through the streets by ourselves now. We had enjoyed a full day of exploration when suddenly the sky turned from clear blue to gray. “It’s time to head back!” I said.
As we went on along the road to our hotel, Kvart, the storm clouds covered the entire sky, and the first raindrops began to hit our heads.
“Should we grab a taxi?” I yelled, the rain being so loud that I had to raise my voice.
“No, we can make it,” my husband boomed back. “It’s only a twenty-minute walk.”
As the rain and wind increased, so did our footsteps. The streets had turned into roaring rivers that quickly soaked our shoes. Suddenly, the biggest eruption of thunder I had ever experienced sounded directly above us! I thought my heart truly stopped for- that moment.
We hurried forward, but it wasn’t long before we realized that we had been walking much longer than it should have taken us to reach our hotel. Where on earth did we take the wrong turn? We had not bought international phone cards, so we couldn’t call for help, and the streets were empty.
Suddenly we noticed some lights on at a gas station. Great, at least we could ask someone there for help! As we approached it, two men were refueling their Chevrolet car. We asked them how to get to Kvart. They didn’t reply but managed a friendly no d and smile. We went on to explain the situation with the few awkward Russian phrases we had just learned. They listened intently, but it was obvious that they were becoming increasingly confused. We had to try our luck back on the street, praying deep down, “Please, send angels to lead us back.”

Jonah pressed his hand into his dad’s old baseball glove as he looked out the window of his stepfather’s car. No one could imagine how much he missed his dad. He breathed in the glove’s warm, leathery smell. The car stopped outside the baseball field.
“Hey, buddy (伙计), have fun at practice. And don’t forget about your sister’s dancing performance tonight,” said Jonah’s stepfather, Steve, as Jonah climbed out. Zoe was not my sister, and you couldn’t tell me what to do, Jonah complained in his mind. Since Mom married Steve a few months ago, Jonah had a lot of mixed-up feelings. He could hardly concentrate. Even baseball 一what he always loved — felt different lately.

The years have left many childhood memories almost dreamlike. However, one memory is seared into my brain. It will never be forgotten, as it changed the track of my entire life. After weeks of lying in a hospital bed, I woke up from a faint, with both of my legs amputated (截肢). I was four years old.
That double amputation helped shape and mold me. It gave me the drive to persevere when everyone quits, and the determination to prove to the world and myself that any obstacles can be overcome.
Running was a relatively new pursuit for me. I started training seriously as a runner in August 2016. From the start, it seemed to be a sport tailored to me. It required long hours of training. It did not matter if it was hot or cold, raining or snowing. There was always training to be done and new golds to achieve.
The 2018 Chicago Marathon was my fifth attempt at the distance. The starting gun cracked, and a grin spread across my face as a chill raced up my arms and down my back. Accompanied by my pacer (配速员), I dashed forward, powerful and confident in my ability to run the exact race plan I had made with my coach.
The race dragged on, and with less than 10 miles to go, my body started to feel the effects of running at a fast pace for a long time. “Dad, I know you will win the race, ”I thought of what my three-year-old son said before the race. It gave me the motivation.
Shortly after mile 22, I was making a right turn when disaster struck. I stepped in a hole, caught the edge, and felt an artificial leg coming off. I panicked and grabbed it with my right hand while frantically (手忙脚乱地) reaching out to grab the shoulder of the pacer. Unfortunately, I missed and came down hard on my side. As my head hit the pavement, my whole world went dark.

When my boy was little, we were always on the same side. He loved life and approached everything with wild curiosity and boundless energy. I spent most of my life chasing him with great joy.
Lately, though, same-sidedness was rare. We began to argue about music, movies, and even the holes in his jeans. He complained we didn’t let him have as many freedoms as his new friends had, and the friction (摩擦) was fierce. I understood that as he stretched to grow, I needed to open my hand. But Grant was often distant.
One day, when he came back from school, I smiled. “How was your day, Grant?” I wanted to hug him, but I hesitated. These teen years had brought distance.
“School was good. Track was great.” The fridge door opened, and the top half of Grant disappeared behind the door.
“I’m glad,” after an awkward silence, I added, “What made track great?”
Now the fridge door slammed. “I just love to run,” he said, taking a huge bite of apple. “I plan to have a daily practice. I’m starting tomorrow morning.”
“Wonderful,” I said. Silence again. I chopped. Grant chomped.
“Well, I’m going to do homework,” my son said. He grabbed his back pack and headed out of the kitchen. But when he got to the dining room, he paused for seconds and turned. “Mom, want to run with me? It’d be good to have a partner.”

A few years ago, the company that I worked for sent my wife and me to live in New York for a year. I’ve always loved running, so I was really happy when I found I lived next to Central Park. This meant that every morning I could go running before I went to work.
Because a lot of people had told me to be careful of robbers (抢劫犯) in the park, so usually I didn’t take anything with me. How could they rob me if I didn’t have anything? But one morning, my wife gave me 10 dollars and asked me to buy some bread on the way. It was a beautiful morning and the park was quiet with few people walking or jogging around. While I was running through the park, another jogger knocked into (撞到) me. He said sorry to me and continued running. For a while, I didn’t think too much of it.
However, when I noticed the wide path where I was running, I thought it was a little strange. The warning of robbers in the park hit me. “It could have been a robber!” I suddenly became anxious, so I checked my pocket and found that the money was missing. Without thinking twice, I ran after that jogger. I finally caught up and held him by the arm. I shouted, “Give me the 10 dollars! Now!” I am not usually a hot-headed (性急的) person, but I got really angry this time. I couldn’t believe the robbery was actually happening to me.
Filled with anger, I shook my fist (拳头) at him. This seemed to frighten him. He quickly put his hand in his pocket and gave me 10 dollars. Then he ran away as fast as he could. I bought the bread and went home.
As soon as I got home, I couldn’t wait to tell my wife the story. “You won’t believe what happened to me,” I said with pride. She immediately stopped me, “I know, you left the money for the bread on the kitchen table.”
Looking at the money on the table, I stood there, shocked.

Gideon and his mother were visiting the supermarket for their weekly shopping when he found a leather wallet. He picked it up curiously and found there was a coffee bean pattern on the surface, which reminded him of his own experience working part-time at a coffee shop during college.
Besides that, he found a significant amount of cash and a business card with a phone number on it. Gideon had tolerated a poor life along with his mother. Each meal was the result of his mother’s hard work. Gideon had been struggling with unemployment while actively searching for a job.
“Should I keep the wallet?” he wondered, the thought of financial relief crossing his mind. “I could surely use the money.” Yet, a wave of guilt washed over him. “But Mother would be annoyed if she knew,” he thought, holding the wallet tightly. Noticing his hesitation, Gideon’s mother asked what was wrong. He told her about the wallet and his internal struggle. With a gentle but firm voice, she reminded him of the values, “We don’t keep what isn’t ours, Gideon.”
Gideon’s face turned red with a mix of emotions. “We have bills without steady income, and this could be a turning point,” he responded. His mother acknowledged their difficulties but encouraged him to think about the right thing to do, saying, “Returning it could bring you unexpected good luck.”
Finally, with resolve, Gideon decided to call the number on the business card. The owner was an elderly man who was very grateful when he met them to take the wallet back. He explained that the money inside was prepared for his son Andrew, which was crucial for his new business — a coffee shop he was planning to open. As Gideon walked away, he felt a sense of fulfillment(成就感) from doing the right thing, but he continued to worry about his own job search and financial situation.

“I need to find my library book. It’s due today.” I bounced down the stairs “Good luck! The library closes in fifteen minutes.” Dad grabbed my overalls from the railing and disappeared down the basement stairs.
“You haven’t seen my library book, have you? It has a red cover.” I shouted.
“No, and your mother and I are not paying any replacement fees anymore, Jackie!” yelled Dad from the basement.
That was the least of my worries. The real problem was the library’s three-strike rule: if you lost a third book, you’d be banned from checking out any books for a whole month. I ran around the house, looking under the couch, in the fridge, and behind the piano. I checked the broom closet, the fruit bowl, and the windowsills. Where was that library book?
Dad suggested it might be in the car, Of course! I always read in the car. “But I think Mom just left for the grocery store.” he added.
He was right. Mom pulled out of the driveway at that very moment. No! No! No! “Mom, wait!” I sprinted through the hallway, grabbing my coat and helmet as I went.
“Mom, wait!” I shouted, chasing her on my bike. I saw her stop and toss a box into a recycling bin. To my horror, my red library book was on top!
The afternoon sun glared off the recycling bin’s metal surface as I crazily dug through yogurt containers and cereal boxes. Finally I found the book — covered in ketchup (番茄酱). Before I could celebrate, a dog snatched it and ran off. I chased it across the soccer field, luring (引诱) it back with my chips.
The ketchup-smeared pages stuck together with a sickly sweet smell that mixed with the dog’s slob ber (口水). With no time to lose, I sprinted to the library, arriving as the doorkeeper was locking the door. “Please, I need to return this!” I begged. “Did you write your thank-you notes?” I asked my son, Jon.
“No, not yet, Mom,” Jon replied, rolling his eyes.
He promised to do it when he got back from Kim's house. However, I demanded that he not leave the house until he finished writing a note to everyone he came in contact with during the job interview.
“Even the receptionist who was rude to me?” Jon asked with a confused expression.
“Especially her!”
Jon was home on Christmas break from college and had just finished interviewing with his first-choice company in Cleveland, Ohio. It was a rare opportunity considering that jobs were in short supply.
The power of a thank-you note is something I drilled into my boy from the time he was old enough to hold a pencil. It didn't matter if it was for a birthday, Christmas or graduation. Every gift had to be acknowledged with sincere gratitude within twenty-four hours.
Growing up, my mom was a stickler for thank-you notes. But she phrased it in such a way that it came across not as a threat but as a privilege. She'd say, “Your words of sincere gratitude have the power to change someone's life for the better—even if it's just for a moment.” Her advice changed my life, and it was my hope that it would change Jon's life as well.
After an hour, Jon emerged from his room and handed over eight thank-you notes. To my delight, they were all sincere and heartfelt, even the one to the receptionist who had been less than friendly. Before Jon left to visit Kim, he turned to me and announced that he was pretty sure a thank-you note to the CEO or the receptionist wasn't going to land him the job. With a smile, I told him to wait and see.
Jon was twenty-one years old, and I felt foolish telling a grown man what to do, but I also didn't want him living in our basement for the rest of his life!

I’d had a rather stressful day at work. It didn’t help that I’d also had another argument with my teenaged daughter that morning. By the time I arrived home, I eagerly anticipated getting my evening walk to clear my mind.
It was getting cloudier and I could tell that rain was coming. No problem. I would be home long before the liquid sunshine fell.
The intense walk worked off much of my energy. I slowed my pace, but a quick glance down shocked me. The cutest Jack Russell Terrier (杰克罗素梗犬) had appeared out of nowhere and was keeping pace beside me. I knelt to pet her, delighted to discover that her ears were so soft that she reminded me of my childhood dog. She had the same coloring as Lucky—white with a large black spot on her back and side, brown face, and white nose.
"Where did you come from, little one?" She was not wearing a collar or identification tags. I continued my walk, thinking she would find her way home on her own. The little stray (流浪狗) continued to keep pace, walking next to me as if we were age-old companions. When I picked up my pace, so did she. When I slowed, she slowed. She never left my side.
When I looked around, I was not surprised that, other than the dog, I was alone on this dreary (沉闷的) night. The sky had already darkened. I was worried. If I left her out there, she might be hit by a car. I wondered if I should just take her home.
The timing was ironic (讽刺的). My sixteen-year-old daughter, Megan, wanted another pet. Our family dog, Daisy, had slowed considerably in her old age, and Megan hoped we would adopt a younger, livelier dog. We had resisted her requests. It didn't make sense to add another pet to our family. My husband, John, and I were looking forward to a little more freedom. Besides, Megan and I had not exactly seen eye-to-eye earlier that day. I didn't want it to seem as if I was rewarding her after yet another argument.

At the far end of town, next to a dark forest, sat an old white house. It looked like a Spook House from a story, which might sound interesting if it weren’t where I lived with my mom and little brother, Andy.
The house wasn’t so horrible, but the outside might make you think twice about entering. Peeling (脱落的) paint revealed black images underneath that looked like bats. And weeds and long grass wrapped the house.
When Mom rented it, I thought she was crazy. “Are you kidding, Mom? You really want to live in this place? It’s ugly.” Mom looked hurt, and I regretted my words. I knew she was doing the best she could. Obviously, this house wouldn’t be her first choice if money were no object.
Mom cleaned every room and painted the inside. I must admit the fresh paint made a difference. “Can I paint the outside?” I asked her. “I’ll ask Mr. Dudley to paint it,” Mom replied.
Our landlord, Mr. Dudley agreed, but he always had thousands of excuses. Mom didn’t seem concerned. She was busy planning for my grandma to live with us. Having my grandma watch Andy while Mom worked would save on daycare expenses.
One morning I told my grandma that I was joining a history study group at Justine’s house after school and would be late getting home. “Just be home before dark,” she said.
That afternoon I walked with a girl and a boy to Justine’s house—a big, beautiful house with columns. The inside was furnished like a decorator magazine, with elegant furniture.
“I love your house, Justine,” I said, trying not to scream. She smiled, “Thanks. You’ll have to come over again.” I was delighted and surprised that Justine wanted me to come back. I would definitely take her up on her offer. I just couldn’t invite her to my house. No way did I want anyone to see my house.

Jason had a reputation as the messiest kid at Greenwood High School. His room was like a junkyard, with clothes tossed everywhere, empty chip bags on the floor, and half-finished sodas scattered across his desk. His mom, Susan, had stopped nagging (唠叨) him to clean up, hoping he himself would eventually get the hint. But instead, the mess just got worse.
Greenwood High School was famous for its creative projects, so when the headmaster Mr. Thompson declared a new “Labor Education” project, no one was too surprised. The idea was simple: teach students about hard work through real tasks. Jason wasn’t excited—he would rather play video games all day—but the project was a must; he had no choice.
Finally, the day of the project came. It was gray and overcast, matching Jason’s mood as he dragged himself into the school’s lecture hall with his classmates, yawning and complaining. Mr. Thompson stood on stage with a speaker. “Today, we’re going to learn the importance of labor!” he exclaimed. Jason rolled his eyes when he was assigned to the gardening group with his best friend, Mike. Their job was to clear out the school’s overgrown front lawn and plant new flowers. They shared a look that said it all—this was going to be a long day.
As they started weeding, Jason quickly discovered how hard physical labor could be. The weeds were stubborn, and the leaves seemed to multiply every time he raked (耙) them. His back ached, his arms felt like jelly, and his hands blistered. While stretching, eager to sneak in a break, he spotted Mr. Thompson standing afar with a big smile from across the yard, giving him a big thumbs-up.
After lunch, the group moved to build simple things like birdhouses for the garden in the school’s maintenance house. Jason had two left hands at first—his hammering was a mess— but he slowly got better. By the end of the session, he managed to make a crooked but decent-looking birdhouse. Carrying his newly-made birdhouse around, Jason proudly showed it off to his classmates.

We were a random bunch, joined together by social media and the chance discovery of a terribly weak stray cat (流浪猫).
Once before, I was part of a group that rallied (集合) for a cat that surely had no chance of recovery. In the earlier instance, I discovered the orange cat on a miserably hot and humid July evening, lying in the rain, caked in mud and pleading for help. Infection was raging in two-thirds of its body, which did not bode well. The doctor told us the cat’s chances for survival were very slim, but we gave it our best.
The cat, which was later named Lucky, weathered the storm, though losing all her teeth to infection. And luckily, Lucky was eventually adopted by a loving family.
So when my friend Shuran recently posted awful details regarding a newly-found (also orange) cat on her WeChat Moments, along with its photos being cared for at a pet hospital near her home, I shuddered (颤抖). However, since she had placed the cat in professional hands, I trusted that the doctor knew best, and I told Shuran the story of Lucky and urged her to hold on to hope.
That’s when she posted about going to the market to get a fish, whose skin would be placed for protection over the large area on the cat’s haunches (腰腿) where its own skin was gone and the bones exposed. Now I feared the worst.
Meanwhile, Shuran sent me an invitation to a chat group, in which I joined the others rallying for the cause. We now totaled 11 — all of us brought together by Love, the name that Shuran gave the cat.
In a sudden flurry of messages, we were informed that Love’s condition had worsened. Shuran asked everyone to vote: Do we continue the treatment or do we euthanize (使安乐死) Love, who was clearly suffering? A deadline was set for 2 pm the next day, but we were informed shortly afterward that the cat’s breathing had grown very faint.
