On a misty February morning in 2025,retired police officer and part-time farmer
Ramesan and his wife,Padmam, made their way across their plot of land in a small town
in southern India, where they had joined relatives to harvest black pepper.Soon,Ramesan,
a fit 64-year-old,was climbing atop a Mexican lilac tree very close to the family well to
pick peppers from vines winding around its trunk, while Padmam,56,worked nearby.
Then a sharp sound pierced the quiet morning. The branch beneath Ramesan cracked,
and he lost his balance. He fell into the 40-foot well below, striking his head and back
against the wall on the way down.
Padmam heard the crash and terrifying splash, rushed to the well, and called out.His
faint voice echoed back-he was alive.She lowered a plastic rope,but he cried,"I can't.
I'm too weak,and my leg is hurt."Padmam acted fast:she grabbed the well's rope,tied
one end to a nearby tree, told a relative to call the fire department, and tied the other end
around her waist to go down.
The moss-covered wall was slippery().Her feet slid, and the rope cut her palms
bloody.Midway down,she lost her grip,and fell down into the waist-high cold water.She
felt around blindly and found the unconscious Ramesan, lifting him to keep his head
above water. She felt his faint breath and whispered,"I am with you.I won't let you go."
Ramesan slowly opened his eyes.Together, they waited.
Soon, firefighters arrived and lowered a rescue basket.Padmam helped Ramesan
into it,watching as he was lifted to safety, and then followed.Surprisingly, neither had

Watching sports,particularly at large gatherings,goes beyond entertainment.It
develops a sense of community and belonging among audiences.Although it is popularly
recognized for its positive effects, existing studies on the relationship between watching
sports and well-being offer only limited evidence.
Recognizing this gap,a team of researchers led by Associate Professor Shintaro Sato
from the Faculty of Sport Sciences, started a groundbreaking study.A significant
challenge in well-being research is the subjective nature of measurement procedures,
potentially leading to biased(有偏见的)findings. Therefore, our studies focused on both
subjective and objective measures of well-being."explains Prof.Sato.
In the first study,an online survey was aimed at investigating whether the connection
between sports viewing and well-being varied depending on the type of sport observed.
The experiment exposed participants to various sports videos, assessing their well-being
both before and after viewing. The findings showed that popular sports, like baseball, had
a more significant impact on enhancing well-being compared to less popular sports, such
as golf.
第5页共12页
However, the most groundbreaking aspect of this research arose in the second study.
Here, the team employed brain scan techniques to examine changes in brain activity
following sports viewing.Using advanced MRI,the brain activity of fourteen healthy
participants was analyzed while they watched sports clips. The results showed that, sports
viewing triggered()activation in the brain's reward path, indicative of feelings of
happiness or pleasure.Additionally,a significant finding surfaced in the structural image
analysis. It revealed that individuals watching sports more frequently exhibited greater
gray matter volume in regions associated with reward paths, suggesting that regular sports
viewing may gradually cause changes in brain structures. Both subjective and objective
measures of well-being were found to be positively influenced by engaging in sports
viewing.
The study has profound implications and theoretical contributions to sports
management literature.Existing literature has primarily focused on sports fans;however,
this study has taken into consideration a larger general population regardless of their
relationship to sports watching. This research can contribute significantly to sports
management practices and policymaking for public health.
28.Why did the researchers start the new study?
A.To prove watching sports is for fun.
B.To support existing studies are perfect.
C.To doubt watching sports has good effects
D.To prove sports-viewing benefits well-being better.
29.What does the underlined word"gap"in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Difference
B.Problem
C.Success
D.Habit
30.What can we know from the two studies?
A.Golf playing boosts brain's activity
B.Popular sports cause better brain image
C.Soccer playing triggers brain's reward path.
D.Regular sports viewing affects gray matter volume.
31.What is the author's purpose in writing the passage?
A.To present a new research.
B.To spread sports culture.
C.To advocate watching sports
D.To improve public policymaking.

A 2025 study by researchers at the University of Hong Kong investigated how
loneliness and social anxiety correlate with the problematic use of conversational AI.
They found that individuals with social anxiety were more likely to use the technology in
an addictive manner, with loneliness increasing this tendency. The researchers assume
that people turn to conversational AI as an escape from the discomfort of social
interactions.
We sat down with Professor Renwen Zhang of the National University of Singapore,
who claims that many users find talking with AI "friends"eases loneliness and stress
because they find chatbots to be nonjudgmental and available 24/7,traits difficult to find
in the real worid.
However,a study found that dependence on conversational AI can actually worsen
social anxiety, which may lead to social withdrawal.A person with social anxiety, who
lacks close relationships in the real world, may start using a chatbot to share personal
thoughts typically reserved for a close friend. While this may start as a safe space, the
growing dependency on AI for emotional closeness can deepen isolation, fuel social
anxiety, and weaken the ability to build real-world connections.Since the system is not
programmed to deal with such personal troubles or understand the real-world impact of its
responses, this reliance can lead to harmful effects.
Zhang discussed the disadvantages of current conversational AI in handling mental
suffering, claiming the chatbot's lack of understanding of emotional context causes it to
misread suffering signals and fail to react appropriately.Similarly, unlike trained
professionals, some conversational AI cannot recognize the severity of mental discomfort.
It may reinforce negative thoughts and beliefs.
Making chatbots more sympathetic can help make interactions more engaging,
understandable, and comforting, but doing this poses several risks. It may discourage
people from seeking real human connections, worsening loneliness or reducing the
importance of interpersonal relationships.
32 What does the 2025 study find?
A.Loneliness improves social skills.
B.AI solves real social discomfort.
C.AI reduces social anxiety greatly.
D.Anxious people use AI addictively.
第7页共12页
33.What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
A.Chatbots seem to relieve social anxiety at first.
B.AI emotional dependence harms real social life
C.Close friends are less reliable than chatbots.
D.Social anxiety mainly results from loneliness.
34.What is the author's attitude to conversational AI?
A.Supportive.
B.Subjective.
C.Critical
D.Indifferent
35.What is the best title for the text?
A.Ways to reduce social anxiety.
B.Development of modern chatbots.
C.Benefits of talking with AI friends.
D.Risks of emotional reliance on AI.

Ways to Respectfully Say No
Like most people, your natural instinct is probably to help others when you can.But
sometimes, you just need to say"no."Whether you're declining an invitation to a party or
turning down a new project at work, you can say no while still being respectful. Here are
some ways to help that.
Give yourself rules about how much you can do.Your impulse()might be to
say "yes"to everything. This can result in your becoming exhausted, overbooked, and
stressed out.36 You can do this by creating a structure for how you spend your
time.
37 Account for all of your activities. For example,if you plan to grocery shop
on Saturday morning, mark it on your calendar. That way,if someone asks you to fill in
as soccer coach on Saturday morning, you can just say that you already have something
on your calendar.
Stick to your priorities. You can't do everything,so it is important to be able to
give a respectful "no."38 Write down your priorities each day,and commit to
getting them done.If someone asks you to do something not in line with those goals, you
can say no.
第8页共12页
Ask yourself if you want to accept.Take a moment to think before you respond to
an invitation.39 You don't have to accept every offer that you receive. If you try to
stick to things that you actually want to do,you will likely feel happier and more relaxed.
Focus on the benefits of saying no.It's normal to feel guilty for turning someone
down.To keep yourself from feeling this way,try to remind yourself of the positive
aspects of saying no.40
A.Schedule your time carefully.
B.Avoid giving an immediate reply to them.
C.Wise refusal reduces stress and improves your life.
D.Instead of going for“yes”,be prepared to say“no”
E.Polite refusal means refusing others as little as possible.
F.Always put your own important tasks in the first place.
G.Real relationships depend on frequent acceptance of others

Two Strangers From Reddit Saved Something I Almost Lost
I don't think I've ever felt this kind of gratitude for people I've never even met before
A few days ago, everything we had been working towards almost fell apart in a matter of hours.
We had managed to schedule an interview with the Philippines Ambassador at his official
residence in Delhi.For a small,youth-led organization like ours,this wasn't just another
event. It meant something. It was proof that what we are building has value.
And then,at the last moment, our cameraman backed out.
I remember just sitting there, staring at my phone, trying to figure out how
something so small could break something so big.We didn't have the money to hire
professionals. We didn't have backup. It felt like watching something slip through your
hands while knowing you can't do anything about it.
Out of desperation,I wrote a post on Reddit.
I didn't expect anything real to come out of it.Maybe a few replies, maybe advice.
But what I got instead...I wasn't prepared for.
A person with the username u/melodic Pen6337 reached out.A complete stranger.
No connection,no reason to care. But he did.Not just in words. He actively tried to help.
He started reaching out to people, trying to connect me with someone who could step in.
At one point,he even offered to pay from his own pocket just so that our interview
wouldn't collapse.
It didn't work out in the end.But the effort he put in...the intention behind it...I
don't think I'll ever be able to forget that.In a world where people hesitate to help even
those they know, someone I had never spoken to before was willing to go that far.
