IV.
Over the last few years, I have found that one of my favourite things to do in my free time is to volunteer. I have volunteered for a lot of different organizations and done different jobs. These have included simple, everyday activities like taking dogs for walks at an animal rescue centre and running activities for children at an after-school club. 41
However, no matter what kind of volunteering, I always love it and I will encourage others to have a try. Here are my top four reasons why I think volunteering is so worthwhile.
1. 42
By volunteering, you are carrying out a job—even though you’re not being paid—so you can get valuable experience and skills. These may be useful in the future. For example, many volunteering jobs will help you to get experience in working as a team.
2. You can meet new people.
One of the best things about volunteering is meeting the other volunteers! 43
3. It’s a way to get confidence (自信).
Many volunteers say that the voluntary work has helped them to feel more confident in different ways. For example, I used to be quite a shy person. 44
4. You can have lots of fun!
Doing an activity that you wouldn’t usually do, with like-minded people, should mean that you have a really fun time. You will also feel good knowing that you are doing something good.
These are just a few of the many reasons why I suggest that you look for volunteering chances in your local town or city. There are many different things that you can take part in, and remember that any kind of volunteering is good volunteering. 45 The most important thing to remember is that as well as helping others, you can get a lot from it too!
A.It’s a good chance to get experience and skills.
B.If you like, you can start with something small and who knows what it will lead to!
C.But I have also volunteered to do some more difficult jobs, like translating (翻译) and managing a charity event.
D.They may be very interesting and friendly people and might just turn out to be great friends too.
E.However, my volunteering experience has helped me to talk confidently to strangers, even in front of a crowd!
【答案】41.C 42.A 43.D 44.E 45.B
41.前文提到“做过简单日常的志愿活动,如遛狗、儿童活动”,C项“But I have also volunteered to do some more difficult jobs, like translating and managing a charity event.”
42.此处为第一个理由的标题,后文围绕“获取有价值的经验和技能”展开,A项“It’s a good chance to get experience and skills.”
43.前文讲“志愿服务的好处之一是认识其他志愿者”,D项“They may be very interesting and friendly people and might just turn out to be great friends too.”
44.前文举例“我过去很害羞”,E项“However, my volunteering experience has helped me to talk confidently to strangers, even in front of a crowd!”
45.前文说“任何类型的志愿服务都是好的”,B项“If you like, you can start with something small and who knows what it will lead to!”

Volunteering is a great way to help others, which can actually help you, too.
If somebody volunteers, he does something for the good of another person or the world around us, without being paid. Volunteering comes in all shapes and sizes. It can be organized, such as working for a charity, or informal (非正式的), like helping your neighbours with their food shopping.
Research has shown that volunteering increases our happiness. It can give you a sense of purpose, which can in turn develop your self-confidence and make you feel motivated. This is especially true if you match volunteering to your interests or learn a new skill along the way. For example, if you’re interested in nature, why not volunteer for a wildlife charity? Amy and Ella, who set up the charity Kids Against Plastic, agreed. Amy said, “Volunteering is our way to get started in making a difference, instead of waiting for someone else to do the work.”
By giving to others, you feel what’s been called “the helper’s high”—a positive feeling. Volunteering can make you happier over time, too. It has been shown to reduce feelings of worries, because many people find that they are moving away from their personal worries by paying attention to the needs of others. “Volunteering also gives us a chance to meet and connect with people, which is good news for our mental (精神的) health,” said Jolie Goodman of the Mental Health Foundation. Studies have shown that volunteering can improve your physical health, too.
49.What does the first paragraph mainly talk about?
A.What is volunteering. B.How to set up a charity.
C.Why we should help others. D.How many kinds of volunteer jobs there are.
50.Why does volunteering reduce feelings of worries?
A.Because people have ways to deal with their worries.
B.Because people will be happier after helping others.
C.Because people have no time to think of their worries.
D.Because people get a lot of praise when they volunteer.
51.What’s the structure of the passage? (P = Paragraph)
A. B. C. D.
52.What will probably be discussed next?
A.The long-term impact of volunteering.
B.How middle school students can volunteer.
C.How volunteering can improve our physical health.
D.Different ways of volunteering in various countries.
【答案】49.A 50.C 51.D 52.C
第一段“Volunteering is a great way to help others, which can actually help you, too.”
50.第四段“because many people find that they are moving away from their personal worries by paying attention to the needs of others”说明原因:人们在关注他人需求时,会暂时放下个人烦恼,本质就是没有时间去想自己的烦恼。
52.最后一段“Studies have shown that volunteering can improve your physical health, too.”

When I was a teenage girl, I went to Berlin, Germany for an exchange (交换) program with my team members. One night, we had some free time. Most of them decided to stay indoors and relax. But I did not want to miss the chance to tour Berlin.
I visited lots of places around the city that night. When I finally decided to go back, it was two o’clock in the morning!
As I walked to an underground station, I realized that it was my dad’s birthday. This would be the first birthday I couldn’t celebrate with him, because he had passed away a few months earlier. Before I could begin to miss my dad, the train came.
I rushed onto the train. Soon I found that the train was heading in the wrong direction! I felt afraid.
I looked around the nearly empty car. There was a young woman sitting quietly by the window. I approached her and asked her for help.
Luckily, the woman understood English. She told me how to return to where I got on the train. But I was too nervous to follow her instructions. Without thinking, I said, “Can you come with me?” She gave me a surprised look. But she agreed.
On the journey back, she and I talked. We shared our life stories and our hopes for the future. I even told her about my dad’s passing. With a look of surprise, she told me that she had lost her dad a month before.
At my station, she thanked me for sharing so much with her. She also told me how I had encouraged her. I couldn’t believe this stranger with the big heart was thanking me! I gave her a hug and thanked her for her great kindness.

During the Labor Day holiday, I was volunteering at Yuyuan Garden in Shanghai. It was the first time that I had volunteered in another country. My job was to help visitors with directions (方向). I thought it was easy at first, but I soon realized that there was more to it.
I worked with two helpful Chinese women. Some people didn’t come to me because they thought I couldn’t speak Chinese. To break the ice, I smiled and greeted the people in Chinese. They were surprised and happy to hear me speak Chinese.
One day, a family from Shaanxi came by. The young boy shouted, “Waiguoren!” I smiled and asked if they needed any help. The father wasn’t sure at first, but one of my workmates said, “He can speak Chinese!” Then the father started talking to me. He asked me lots of questions about my country. Later, I asked him about his hometown. He told me about Xi’ an and the Silk Road. His son even practiced a few words with me. We all had fun.
Volunteering there made me understand Chinese culture better. To all students: Life isn’t just in your books—it’s in the real world, too.

A. B. C. D.
