Long time ago, people from other cultures used their hands to
eat food, while the ancient Chinese invented chopsticks to keep
their hands clean,Early chopsticks were used mainly for cooking
until 400AD when people began eating with chopsticks.
In fact,we don't know when chopsticks
were
invented. There's a study showing that they didn't come into wide
use until about 300 BC,Chinese thinker Confucius()was an
important person in the history of chopsticks, because he thought
peace would not appear if people used knives during a meal.
The
"no-knives-on-the-table"rule changed Chinese
cooking a lot.Food had to be cut into small pieces. This was the
birth of Chinese cooking and it made Chinese food popular
around the world.
However, many Westerners find it difficult to use
chopsticks,Eric,an American teacher, had the experience of
learning to use chopsticks."I need to hold them properly to be able
to put the food carefully into my mouth."Eric's Chinese friends
taught him patiently, but it still took him months to learn this skill,

Travelling around the world can be exciting, but it can also lead
to culture shock and feelings of stress.
When I moved to Tuscany,Italy, right after college,I was
enamored by the scenery.Who wouldn't be?The rolling hills,
beautiful buildings and delicious food made the long flight worth
every minute.I was excited about my new beginning. But then,I
started to notice little things.
As an American,we are used to a bit of personal space.Where
I'm from, knocking into someone or standing very closely is
considered rude. This is different from the truth in Italy.
Since this was before translation apps were common,I would
feel helpless sometimes for not knowing the language. However,
Italians like to speak with their hands-a habit I've carried over to
this day.Of course, just because you've experienced culture shock
in one country doesn't mean you won't do so in another.
Years later, when I moved to China,my experience was
special. The culture there was something very foreign to me down
to how to buy things. Before moving there,I had never heard of
WeChat or Alipay.I wasn't prepared at all for how important these
things would be.
Experiencing small waves of culture shock reminds me that I
am travelling around the world and that I should appreciate what
I'm taking in.
American--British writer Bill Bryson said that "...the greatest
reward of travel is...to be in a position in which almost nothing is
so familiar that it is taken for granted(被认为是理所当然的)”

C.Italians stand quite close to each other.
()28.What helped the writer understand what Italians were
saying to her?
A.Their hand gestures.
B.Asking for a guide.
C.Using translation apps
)29.We can find that the writerwhen arriving in China.
A.started to buy many things online
B.experienced culture shock again
C.fit in with life faster
()30.We can infer that the purpose of the last paragraph is to
A.describe the importance of taking travel for granted
B.explain the value of experiencing different cultures
C.show the challenges of visiting a new pace

Did you ever notice that runners always run
counterclockwise((逆时针方向地)on tracks(跑道)?3L_There
are some interesting reasons!Let's learn about them.
A long time ago,in England,people ran counterclockwise.
This running direction had a lotto do with how most people use
their bodies.32 This means they use their right hands and
right legs more. When running counterclockwise, they push off(
with their right legs and keep balance with their left legs
Runners'right arms move out when they run.Running
counterclockwise can stop their right arms from hitting each other.
33
Another reason is that our hearts are on the left side.It feels
more natural to run counterclockwise.34 This can also help us
run faster and stay balanced. Our bodies like to run like this!
Also,in races, everyone has to run the same way.35
The next time you watch a race, you know why runners go
counterclockwise!Isn't it cool?
A.Do you know why?
B.Most people are right-sided.
C.This makes the races fair
D.So it became the rule for races in the world

have their own ways. What do you usually do before exams? Are
there any special traditions in your country?
In China,we have some interesting traditions folsome
important exams. We often eat zongzi and the sounds like
"success"in Chinese, which means getting high scores.
Additionally(另s外),some students prefer to wear red clothes or
socks because the colour red is the symbol of joy and good luck in
Chinese culture. In recent years,it has become popular for
mothers to wear qipao(a traditional Chinese dress)to wish their
children to get victory in the exam,as its name carries the
meaning "qi kai de sheng".
Xie Guoliang,15,Jiangsu
In South Korea,we give our friends sticky rice()cakes
and candies before exams. This is because the word"stick"sounds
like "pass"in Korean.People believe that eating sticky food helps
students "stick"to success and pass their tests.I remember when
my best friend had a big test,I bought his favourite sticky rice
cakes to cheer him up.This tradition makes us feel warm and
confident during stressful exam time.
Chulkyu Lee,18,South Korea
