would do even better.
Scott went home one day and looked online, hoping to find ideas for events the club could

1Sports might have started as a way to survive.Long ago,people ran,jumped,and
climbed to stay alive.Hunters were known for their special skills.Wall paintings from centuries
ago, showing activities like wrestling or dancing, were found in an Egyptian tomb. The ancient
Greeks made a big change by holding the first Olympic Games.
(2Modern sports began in England in the early 19th century and then spread globally.
These became the models for sports such as football that we play now.
3 Sports come in many shapes and sizes.Organized sports, whether swimming or ice
hockey, are serious forms of play. There are rules to obey, skills and positions to learn, and plans
to carry out.Team sports like soccer require you to work with teammates, while individual
)sports such as tennis focus on your personal performance.
4There's no doubt that sports are valuable. The American Academy of Pediatrics says play
is important for kids'and teens'thinking, bodies, social lives and feelings.Sports exercise our
bodies and teach us about ourselves and our world.Organized sports get us using our bodies and
minds, which makes us more imaginative, curious, and creative. The skills we learn can help us
in school and later at work.

feelings are part of the learning process.Sports are supposed to bring people together, but they
can also drive people apart. But even when they're not always a cheerful experience, they show
us how to face life's challenges.
6 You don't have to be on a school team. But many, like school coaches, have found ways
to make play their work, which makes them feel whole.
7There's no better place to play and leam about the world than on a sports field. No matter
what sport you choose, the key is to play for fun. When you do,you're already a winner.

Though oceans cover about 71 percent of the earth's surface, there's still a lot we don't
know about them.Only about 20 percent of the seafloor has been mapped, and the remaining 80
percent is still a secret to us.Some scientists even think that 91 percent of sea animals have yet
to be discovered.
So why do we know so little about the deep sea?Well, getting to those depths is very
difficult and requires high technology that simply didn't come into being for most of human
history.The first navigable submarine(可驾驶的潜水艇),for example,was built in 1620,and it
couldn't go more than five meters below the surface. In fact, for a long time many scientists
didn't even think that there could be any life at depths greater than 550 meters and didn't see
九年级英语试题第4页(共9页)
much need to explore the deep sea. However, this changed in 1862 when life was discovered as
far down as 945 meters below sea level with the help of a digging machine.Ten years later,
around 4,700 species (unknown before from the ocean floor were discovered.
Since then, high technology has been developed to help explore the deep sea, including
satellites. But why is deep-sea exploration still so difficult?Well,at greater depths it is freezing,
everything is completely dark, and the pressure can be over 1,000 times greater than that on the
surface.
Though we have the difficulties,it's important that we understand the seas. They help
control the earth's temperature and produce half of the oxygen(O2)in the air. They can also
provide us with information about climate change. Our future depends on learning more about
our oceans, and it is possible for us to really understand what is ongoing below the surface.
12.Why does the writer use many numbers in the first paragraph?
A.To prove oceans take up most space on Earth.
B.To show human knowledge of oceans is limited.
C.To introduce different kinds of sea creatures.
13.What made people change their opinions about deep-sea exploration?
A.The discovery of deep-sea living things
B.The invention of early submarines.
C.The wide use of modern satellites.
14.What does the underlined word"They"in the last paragraph refer to?
A.Sea animals.
B.The seas.
C.The satellites.
15.What will the writer probably talk about in the next paragraph?
A.How forests create oxygen for humans.
B.Serious pollution problems on land.
C.Practical ways to further explore deep oceans.

阅读下面短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题,并将答案写到答题卡的相应位置。
When I was a kid in the US,all I knew about the Chinese zodiac animals(十二生肖)came
from the pictures printed on paper placemats in Chinese restaurants. For most people in the US,
this might be the deepest look they ever get at Chinese culture. One time,it led to laughs when
we leamed that my aunt is a Rat.
We laughed because in our culture, rats are animals of very low status ()They eat
garbage and carry diseases,so we think they are dirty.Because rats are sneaky(鬼鬼祟祟的),
we think of them as untrustworthy.Calling someone a rat is a serious insult )It means he
or she will betray(背叛)your trust.
As a kid, this caused me to feel bad for people born in the Year of the Rat.I wondered if
Chinese children were ever bullied for their zodiac signs.
Probably not!Human culture is funny. There are always different ways to look at the same
thing.I did some research and found that although Chinese people also see rats as dirty animals,
they added them to the zodiac for a reason.
According to what I found, rats are considered thrifty (and practical by Chinese
people. These are qualities that can bring people wealth. They are also very fertile, which makes
them a symbol of good luck-traditionally,Chinese people prefer to have large families with
many children.Rats are believed to have intelligence as well. That makes sense.Sneaky animals
must be clever.
Like every coin, everything has two sides. This means
Perhaps I need to
find a new understanding for other things-animals,ideas or even people!
