Reading a good book feels even better when you have a special bookmark. Instead of buying one, why not make your own? It’s quick, fun, and you can make it exactly how you like. Now I’ll show you how to make a good DIY (do it yourself) bookmark.
What to prepare
Please prepare a piece of thick card paper, for your DIY bookmark can be used for a long time with high-quality paper. Then get scissors, colored pens and glue. Common daily things are enough. You can also prepare dried flowers or some nice small things if you like.
How to make a DIY bookmark
First, cut the paper into a long, thin rectangle (长方形)—about 2 inches wide and 6 inches tall.
Next, color your bookmark! You can draw your favorite patterns or write beautiful lines from the books you read.
If you want, you can glue on small things like soft cloth pieces or dried flowers to make it more beautiful.
Finally, leave it in a cool place and let everything dry completely. That’s it!
This whole project takes less than 10 minutes. Your handmade bookmark will be one-of-a-kind. Next time you pick up your book, you will feel warm and joyful with your own DIY bookmark beside you.

Carlos Mendez, 38, grew up in a working-class community in Houston, Texas. “School never felt like it was for me,” he once said. For years, he had difficulty in reading, being able to read only a few simple words. He worked part-time jobs—building, gardening, food service, but his reading problem always held him back. He depended on audio apps (音频软件) and asked others to read messages for him, and he often lied about his reading ability to avoid embarrassment. In 2024, after his daughter was born, he decided to change his life. “I want to read her bedtime stories one day,” he told himself.
With the help of his wife, Lila, Carlos began learning to read at the age of 36. Every night, they sat together at the kitchen table, starting with simple picture books and slowly moving to children’s chapter books. “There were nights I wanted to give up,” he said. But he kept going, and after a year, he could read full paragraphs without help.
Later, he even started sharing his reading journey on social media, which brought something unexpected. People began to follow his progress, cheering him on as he read more challenging books. “I realized my story might help someone else feel less alone,” he said. Today, Carlos has over 250,000 followers on TikTok, where he posts live book readings and shares tips for adult learners. Many people say his videos have inspired them to pick up a book again.
Now, Carlos lives with his family in Austin, Texas. He reads to his daughter every night and hopes to write a children’s book someday. “I never thought I’d be someone who could help others learn to read,” he said. “This life, this family, this purpose—it’s everything I’ve ever wanted.”
26. What can we know about Carlos’ past?
A. He could hardly read. B. He didn’t mind his weakness.
C. He had a full-time job. D. He read stories to his daughter.
27. How did Carlos start improving his reading skills?
A. By using some audio apps. B. By teaching others to read.
C. By practicing step by step. D. By taking an online course.

A. Shy but polite. B. Caring and brave. C. Kind but strict. D. Active and honest.
30. What does the story mainly tell us?
A. Time waits for no man. B. East or west, home is best.
C. Each coin has two sides. D. It’s never too late to learn.

It is widely believed that big cats are often seen roaring (咆哮) loudly in the wild. However, scientists have recently uncovered something that goes against the long-standing idea: jaguars (美洲虎) can actually “meow”, much like small house cats. This surprising discovery is changing how we understand the communication among one of the Amazon’s most powerful animals.
Researchers from Brazil and the US set up cameras in the wide Pantanal wetlands and surrounding forests—one of the largest national park areas in Brazil. Over the course of two years, the cameras filmed uncommon scenes of mother jaguars and their babies communicating in their natural homes. What they found was unexpected: instead of the deep roars typical of big cats, mother jaguars were making soft meowing sounds to call their young. The babies answered with similar meows, creating a gentle exchange that helped them find each other in thick woods.
This behavior appears to be a natural adaptation (适应) to the environment, where thick leaves can easily separate a mother from her babies. Unlike the far-carrying roar showing power or preventing enemies, these meowing sounds are short, soft, and meant for close communication — perfect for keeping a family unit together without inviting unwanted attention from other animals.
The discovery has greatly excited wildlife scientists. As far as researchers know, this is the first time such behavior has been scientifically recorded in jaguars. While lions, tigers, and leopards are physically unable to meow because of the differences in their vocal anatomy (发声解剖结构), jaguars appear to have kept this ability—perhaps pointing to a gradual development or a special life skill.
This finding not only deepens our understanding of jaguar behaviors but also reminds us how much we still have to learn about even the most typical species. It tells us that in the wild, the line between “powerful beast” and “caring parent” is often softer than we imagine.
31. What’s the new discovery about jaguars?
A. They live differently in the wild. B. They can meow like house cats.
C. They roar loudly to communicate. D. They stay top in power in nature.
32. How did the scientists study jaguars?
A. By doing lab research. B. By examining the videos.
C. By feeding baby jaguars. D. By watching jaguar movies.
33. Why do mother jaguars make soft sounds?
A. To show their great power. B. To change their living environment.
C. To warn dangerous enemies. D. To connect closely with their young.
34. What can we learn from paragraph 4?
A. Jaguars’ meowing behavior has no special value. B. Scientists have fully understood jaguars’ growth.
C. Jaguars differ from other big cats in vocal ability. D. Lions and tigers can also meow from time to time.
35. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To remind us to protect jaguars. B. To compare jaguars with other cats.
C. To share fresh facts about jaguars. D. To offer new ways to study jaguars.
D
Recently, a baby rabbit has been hanging around my backyard. It sometimes nibbles (啃) on green plants or lies lazily in the sunshine. Most of the time, it runs around sharply and rushes into corners so wildly that dirt flies up in messy circles. A human child acting this way would probably be made by their parents to clean up the yard and stay indoors. If only more children could be as lucky as rabbits.
In fact, most young people today aren’t able to enjoy such freedom of movement. The World Health Organization reports that 81 percent of teenagers around the world take insufficient exercise, and it adds that the number of young people who stay still for long hours usually goes up with economic (经济的) growth.
This situation does not happen by chance. Many children fail to reach woods, fields, and other open spaces where they might play freely, while others are not allowed to do such activities by their parents. In the United States, many parents usually stop their children from wild play because of safety worries or the influence of social standards, which require kids to stay quiet in public places like waiting rooms, subways, bookstores and restaurants. However, this preference for calm behavior may wrongly suggest that inactivity is better, despite the fact that physical movement is especially important for children’s development.
Research has found that children who move have healthier bones, muscles, and joints, and a lower future risk of being overweight or developing illnesses; active kids also have better thinking skills, get higher grades, and are more likely to stay on task than kids who are less active. And a recent study suggested that increased sedentary (久坐的) behavior in youth could affect a person’s mental health into adulthood.
Thankfully, providing kids with more freedom doesn’t cost much money. Mostly, it just requires a little creativity. For example, parents can let kids play freely on a cheap yoga ball or do simple movement challenges.
36. How is paragraph 1 developed?
A. By giving examples. B. By making comparisons.
C. By explaining reasons. D. By presenting a research.
37. What does the underlined word “insufficient” mean in paragraph 2?
A. Very safe. B. Not enough. C. Quite popular. D. Never boring.
38. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Why children are short of free movement. B. How parents help with kids’ schoolwork.
C. Where children play in open public places. D. What safety problems kids face outdoors.
39. What advantage can active kids get according to paragraph 4?
A. A lower risk of danger. B. Great housework skills.
C. Better attention control. D. Full prevention of illness.
40. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Little Rabbits Want Protection B. The Influence of Social Standards
C. Kids Need More Freedom to Play D. Ways to Improve Teenagers’ Grades

Rejection, or being refused, hurts a lot. Whether in a professional, social or romantic situation, there’s an especially strong pain if we feel we are not wanted.
____41____ Such bad memories may remain in our minds for long, just like a heavy rock stuck in our head. Scientist Helen Fisher, who studies human behavior, found rejection and body injury had much in common. Brain tests showed areas connected with physical and mental pain were more active. Time did reduce the painful feelings for many people, but for some they could last for months or years.
Why does rejection hit so hard? When you are socially left out, you will suddenly feel cold and lonely, like being forced out of a forest camp to face wild dangers. ____42____ Long ago, our ancestors depended on group warmth to stay alive. Being kicked off the group could have meant death, so it was something to be avoided at all costs. Things have changed over time. People today won’t usually have to face such dangers. ____43____
However, it is not wise to keep away from rejection all the time in modern life. In fact, the fear of being refused hurts us far more than such experience itself. ____44____ As a result, our social world will become smaller and smaller.
To live a satisfying life, we need to discover our interests and strengths. Meanwhile, we should step out of our comfort zone, bravely try new things and learn to accept failure. ____45____ We are fully able to overcome the fear of being refused, and this small change will surely bring us unexpected positive results.
A. We should refuse others in a polite way.
B. Most people have been turned down before.
C. This natural feeling comes from ancient times.
D. Many of us worry too much about what others have.
E. Instead of being defeated by difficulty, we can try to manage it.
F. But we still have a strong wish for care and protection from others.
G. If we always avoid being refused, we’ll gradually not dare to take risks.

28. What happened after Carlos shared his reading journey online?
A. He became rich. B. He stopped reading. C. He wrote a book. D. He received support.
29. Which of the following best describes Carlos?
A. Shy but polite. B. Caring and brave. C. Kind but strict. D. Active and honest.
30. What does the story mainly tell us?
A. Time waits for no man. B. East or west, home is best.
C. Each coin has two sides. D. It’s never too late to learn.
A 27. C 28. D 29. B 30. D

第一段明确指出:“For years, he had difficulty in reading, being able to read only a few simple words.”,说明他过去几乎不识字(could hardly read)。
第二段描述了Carlos的学习过程:“starting with simple picture books and slowly moving to children’s chapter books”,说明他是通过循序渐进、一步步练习来提高阅读技能的。
第三段明确指出:“People began to follow his progress, cheering him on... Many people say his videos have inspired them...”,说明他在网上分享后获得了人们的支持和鼓励。
C
B 32. B 33. D 34. C 35. C

根据第四段第二句“While lions, tigers, and leopards are physically unable to meow..., jaguars appear to have kept this ability”可知,与其他大型猫科动物(狮、虎、豹)无法喵叫不同,美洲虎保留了这种能力,说明它们在发声能力上存在差异。
B 37. B 38. A 39. C 40. C
第一段通过对比小兔子的自由奔跑和人类孩子被要求待在室内的行为来展开:“A human child acting this way would probably be made by their parents to clean up the yard and stay indoors.”
第二段中“…81 percent of teenagers around the world take insufficient exercise”,结合上下文“不能享受自由活动”可知,insufficient意为“不足的”,即not enough。
第四段明确指出:“active kids also have better thinking skills, get higher grades, and are more likely to stay on task than kids who are less active.” stay on task即注意力控制更好。
B 42. C 43. F 44. G 45. E
根据文章第一段“Rejection, or being refused, hurts a lot.”以及后文“Such bad memories may remain in our minds for long…” B“Most people have been turned down before.”
根据文章第二段“When you are socially left out, you will suddenly feel cold and lonely, like being forced out of a forest camp to face wild dangers.”以及后文“Long ago, our ancestors depended on group warmth to stay alive.” C“This natural feeling comes from ancient times.”
根据文章第二段“People today won’t usually have to face such dangers.” F“But we still have a strong wish for care and protection from others.”
根据文章第三段“In fact, the fear of being refused hurts us far more than such experience itself.”以及后文“As a result, our social world will become smaller and smaller.” G“If we always avoid being refused, we'll gradually not dare to take risks.”
根据文章第四段“Meanwhile, we should step out of our comfort zone, bravely try new things and learn to accept failure.”以及后文“We are fully able to overcome the fear of being refused…” E“Instead of being defeated by difficulty, we can try to manage it.”

根据上文“How did you feel?(你感觉怎么样?)” 下文“But it was a wonderful try!(但这是一次很棒的尝试!)” C“I was a bit nervous.(我有点紧张。)”
A“How many did you sell?(你卖了多少?)”
结合后句“And many people said they would come...(许多人说他们会来……)” B“Did you get more fans?(你获得更多粉丝了吗?)”
What can I do?(当然!我能做什么?)”可知,上文应是发出邀请或请求帮助。选项B“Would you like to come?(你愿意来吗?)”

“into sharp pieces of glass”说明罐子broke“破碎/碎裂”成了碎片,符合语境。
“like a balloon”说明手套被吹鼓,blew it up“把它吹起来”是充气膨胀的动作,符合语境。
draw a chicken face on it“在它上面画小鸡脸”,on表示“在物体表面”,符合语境。
after“在……
look on the bright side“看到光明的一面”是固定习语,look符合语境。call on“拜访”、depend on“依靠”、reflect on“反思”均不能与the bright side构成固定表达“乐观地看待事物”。
