(2025七年级下·四川成都·期末)
Have you ever read stories by the Danish (丹麦的) writer Hans Christian Andersen? This year is his 220th birthday! People share their own stories about reading Andersen’s works.
Andersen’s stories were a big part of my childhood (童年) because my mom read them to me before bed. My favorite was The Little Match Girl. The Little Match Girl shows how people don’t care about poor children. The girl walking in the snow without shoes still makes me sad. Every New Year’s Eve, I remember to be thankful for what I have.
——By Julia from Poland
The story that stayed with me the most is The Emperor’s New Clothes. When I was little, I thought it was just a silly story. Why didn’t anyone say the emperor had no clothes on? But now I see this kind of thing in real life. Someone keeps making bad choices. Still, many people are afraid to speak up. In some ways, it really does seem like the emperor has no clothes.
——By Steve from the US
In the UK, we often read Andersen’s stories in primary school. My mom first read The Ugly Duckling to me. Later in school, we talked about its message of growing up and becoming special. We often use his stories in everyday life. For example, when I can’t sleep, my wife calls me “The Princess and the Pea”. If we see people are too scared to speak up, we say it’s like “The Emperor’s New Clothes”.

On apps like Douyin, everyone looked perfect. Emma drank coffee in Paris. Jack won a soccer game. Lucy’s photos looked like beautiful paintings. But my photos? My birthday cake was messy. My clothes got dirty on sports day. I deleted (删除) almost all of them, and I just kept one. In it, I was smiling, but it wasn’t real.
I tried so hard to make my posts look great. I walked far to take flower photos. I spent 30 minutes making burnt eggs look nice. Even when I cried over homework, I posted: “Working hard!” But no one liked my posts. That night, I cried in the bathroom and threw my phone against the wall angrily.
My phone screen broke. I told Lucy: “Your life is perfect.” She said: “No! I took 20 photos for one post! And I used some apps to make my photos look more beautiful.” We talked all the evening. Emma was not drinking coffee in real Paris. Jack was scared before his soccer game…Finally, I came to realize that life isn’t always perfect. At 9: 00 p.m., I took a picture of my broken phone screen and shared it on Douyin.
The next day, people loved my real photo! Comments (评论) said: “Finally, someone is like me!” I shared more: messy rooms, dirty clothes, crying over homework…My friend sent a message to me: “You just act like studying hard in your photos!”.
Well, perfect photos are not real. Everyone has messy moments and that’s okay! When we show our true selves, we make real friends. Being yourself is better than being perfect!

It was 7:00 pm. Tom was crying when he came back home.
“What happened, Tom? How was your trip?” his mother asked with a big smile. “I didn’t succeed. The mountain is so high and full of big or small rocks on the way. I tried but I was too tired and it was very late, so I came back.” Tom cried. “Don’t be sad. You are only 14 years old. You can climb mountains in the future,” his mother said. “But, standing at the top of the mountain is my dream!” Tom said.
His father came over and asked, “Did you see the green trees on your way?” “Sure, and there are a lot of beautiful flowers along the road,” Tom said. “Did you hear the birds singing?” his father asked. “There were many kinds of birds singing in the trees, and their voice was very sweet,” Tom said. “Did you feel the beauty of nature?” his father asked. “Yes! The blue sky, the white clouds, the green trees and the colourful flowers were like a beautiful picture!” Tom answered, smiling. “That’s enough!” his father smiled and said, “Please remember, son. Usually, getting what you want is not the most important. Although you didn’t arrive at the top of the mountain, you saw many beautiful sights on the way.”
