W:Gaylord Nelson was a US official from the state of Wisconsin.He saw damage from a large oil spill in the ocean near the state of California in January 1969.The spill proved to be an environmental nightmare as it had a significant effect on marine life.That moved Senator Nelson to take action.At the same time,some students were holding antiwar movement.Nelson found it an appropriate time to direct the energy of the students towards a fight for environmental protection.Thus the first Earth Day took place on April 22d of the following year.
