Last summer, my family went on a trip to Yunnan. We took the train because my father wanted us to enjoy the scenery along the way. The train ride took more than eight hours, but I didn't feel bored at all. Outside the window, I saw green mountains, rice fields tied together like a huge quilt, and small villages with houses made of wood and stone.
When we arrived in Lijiang, it was early in the morning and the air was cool and fresh. We stayed in a small guesthouse near the Old Town, which has a history of over 800 years. The stone roads were smooth after centuries of footsteps, and there was a small river running through the town. Local people sat by the river, playing traditional music on their instruments.
On the second day, we rented bikes and rode to a nearby village. The farmers were working in the fields, and some children waved at us with big smiles. It was the first time I had felt so close to nature. When I stood on the hill and looked at the green valley below, I found myself completely forgetting the noise and pressure of city life. That trip taught me something important: sometimes the best way to relax is not to do more, but to slow down. Yunnan showed me a different way of living—one that is peaceful, simple and full of beauty. I can still recall the smell of the earth after rain and the sound of horses walking on the stone roads.
19. How did the family go to Yunnan?
A. By plane. B. By train. C. By car. D. By bus.
20. What does the underlined word "scenery" mean in Paragraph 1?
A. 食物 B. 风景 C. 建筑 D. 人群
21. What did the writer see in the Old Town?
A. Tall modern buildings. B. A small river through the town.
C. A large shopping mall. D. Heavy traffic on the streets.
22. What did the writer learn from the trip?
A. Traveling by train is always boring.
B. Cities are better places to live in.
C. The best way to relax is to slow down.
D. Riding bikes is the best form of exercise.

There is an unusual island in the Indian Ocean. It is called Socotra, and it belongs to Yemen. The island is so special that many people call it "the most alien-looking place on Earth." You don't need to be a scientist to understand why. As soon as you set foot on the island, you will see plants and trees that can be found nowhere else on the planet. In fact, about one third of the plants on Socotra are endemic, which means they only grow there.
The most famous of these is the Dragon Blood Tree. It looks like a huge mushroom or an umbrella that has been turned inside out. Its name comes from the red sap that the tree produces. For centuries, local people have used this sap as medicine and as a dye for coloring clothes. Another strange plant is the Desert Rose, which has a thick, bottle-shaped trunk that stores water. This allows it to survive the island's long dry season, which can last for nearly half a year.
Socotra is also home to many unique animals, including birds and reptiles that you will not see anywhere else. However, this natural wonder is now facing serious threats. Climate change and uncontrolled development are putting many of its plants and animals in danger. The Yemeni government and several international organizations are working hard to protect the island, but there is still a long way to go. Scientists warn that if we do not take stronger action, some of Socotra's unique species could disappear forever.
23. Why is Socotra called "the most alien-looking place on Earth"?
A. Because it is very far from other places.
B. Because it belongs to a different planet.
C. Because many plants there cannot be found elsewhere.
D. Because it has the largest land area in the Indian Ocean.
24. How did the Dragon Blood Tree get its name?
A. From its huge size. B. From its strange shape.
C. From its red sap. D. From its long history.
25. What is special about the Desert Rose?
A. It can store water in its trunk.
B. It smells like real roses all year round.
C. It can move around in the desert.
D. It produces a sweet kind of honey.
26. What does the writer think about the future of Socotra's plants and animals?
A. They are completely safe now.
B. They have already disappeared.
C. Only a few people care about them.
D. They are facing serious threats and need stronger protection.
D
For years, some people believed that students should be put into different classes based on their exam scores. The top students would study together, while those who struggled were placed in separate groups. The idea behind this was simple: bright students would not be slowed down, and teachers could give extra help to those who needed it. However, researchers have been questioning whether this approach really works. New studies show that it may do more harm than good.
A recent study by a group of education researchers looked at over 5,000 students in 40 schools. The results were eye-opening. Students in mixed-ability classes made more progress on average than those separated by ability. Why? In mixed groups, students learn from each other. When a stronger student explains a problem to a classmate, both of them benefit. The stronger student learns to think more clearly, while the other student receives help from someone who speaks in a more relatable way than a textbook.
Another problem with tracking by ability is that it can easily hurt students' confidence. Once students are labeled as "low-ability," many of them begin to lose belief in themselves. They start to think, "I am just not good enough." This feeling can follow them for years and affect their performance in all subjects. On the other hand, mixed-ability classes send a different message: everyone has something valuable to bring to the table, and everyone can improve with effort.
Of course, teaching mixed-ability classes is not easy. Teachers need to design activities that challenge all students, from the most advanced to those who need more support. But the evidence is clear—when we separate students too early, we limit not only their learning but also their potential. Education should be about opening doors, not closing them. Every student deserves a chance to grow together with others.
27. What was the original reason for separating students by ability?
A. To make schools more competitive with each other.
B. To prevent slower students from affecting faster ones.
C. To let all students learn at the same speed.
D. To reduce the number of teachers needed in schools.
28. According to the study, which group of students made more progress on average?
A. Students in mixed-ability classes.
B. The top students studying alone.
C. Students who only used textbooks.
D. Students in separate lower-ability classes.
29. How does a stronger student benefit from helping a classmate?
A. They get extra points for their exam scores.
B. They spend less time on their own homework.
C. They learn to organize their own ideas better.
D. They receive special praise from the teacher.
30. What message does the writer want to give in the last paragraph?
A. Separating students by ability is the best way to push them forward.
B. Mixed-ability classes are too difficult for teachers, so they should not be used.
C. Education should close doors for students who are not talented enough.
D. Every student should have the opportunity to learn and grow with others.

Hi, I'm Lisa. Let me tell you about our school trip last Friday. It was really a day to remember.
We went to the city science museum. The bus ride took about forty minutes. When we arrived, a friendly guide was already waiting for us.
The most exciting part for me was the technology zone. I tried a VR game for the first time in my life! With the VR glasses on, I felt like I was standing on Mars. It felt so real that I almost forgot I was inside a museum building. Some of my classmates screamed with excitement, and we all couldn't stop laughing.
At noon, we sat under big old trees in the garden and had our lunch. I had brought some sandwiches and an apple. It was such a peaceful moment.
In the afternoon, we learned about space exploration. The guide showed us models of rockets and explained how astronauts live in space. I took a lot of photos and bought a small model spaceship as a souvenir.
On the bus ride back, we talked about our favorite moments. Everyone agreed it was an unforgettable day, and I hope we'll have another trip like this soon.

There is an unusual island in the Indian Ocean. It is called Socotra, and it belongs to Yemen. The island is so special that many people call it "the most alienlooking place on Earth." You don't need to be a scientist to understand why.
Another strange plant is the Desert Rose, which has a thick, bottleshaped trunk that stores water.
23. Why is Socotra called "the most alienlooking place on Earth"?
A. Because it is very far from other places.
B. Because it belongs to a different planet.
C. Because many plants there cannot be found elsewhere.
D. Because it has the largest land area in the Indian Ocean.
【答案】C
【解析】 细节理解题。第一段"As soon as you set foot on the island, you will see plants and trees that can be found nowhere else on the planet",岛上的植物在地球其他地方找不到,因此被称为"最像外星的地方"。"nowhere else"与选项C中"cannot be found elsewhere"同义替换。故选C。

A. They are completely safe now.
B. They have already disappeared.
C. Only a few people care about them.
D. They are facing serious threats and need stronger protection.
【答案】D
【解析】 观点态度题。末段"Scientists warn that if we do not take stronger action, some of Socotra's unique species could disappear forever.",科学家警告如果不采取更强有力的措施,一些独特物种可能永远消失。这说明它们面临严重威胁,需要更强保护。故选D。

The results were eyeopening. Students in mixedability classes made more progress on average than those separated by ability.
Once students are labeled as "lowability," many of them begin to lose belief in themselves. They start to think, "I am just not good enough." This feeling can follow them for years and affect their performance in all subjects. On the other hand, mixedability classes send a different message: everyone has something valuable to bring to the table, and everyone can improve with effort.
Of course, teaching mixedability classes is not easy.
【答案】B
【解析】 细节理解题。第一段"bright students would not be slowed down, and teachers could give extra help to those who needed it",最初按能力分班的理由是让快生不被拖慢,同时老师能给慢生额外帮助。即防止慢生影响快生。故选B。
28. According to the study, which group of students made more progress on average?
A. Students in mixedability classes.
B. The top students studying alone.
C. Students who only used textbooks.
D. Students in separate lowerability classes.
【答案】A
【解析】 细节理解题。第二段"Students in mixedability classes made more progress on average than those separated by ability.",研究表明混合能力班级的学生平均进步更大。"on average"与题干对应。故选A。
29. How does a stronger student benefit from helping a classmate?
A. They get extra points for their exam scores.
B. They spend less time on their own homework.
C. They learn to organize their own ideas better.
D. They receive special praise from the teacher.
【答案】C
【解析】 细节理解题。第二段"The stronger student learns to think more clearly",优生在给同学讲解时,自己的思路也变得更清晰,即更好地梳理了自己的想法。选项C中"organize their own ideas better"与原文"think more clearly"同义替换。故选C。
30. What message does the writer want to give in the last paragraph?
A. Separating students by ability is the best way to push them forward.
B. Mixedability classes are too difficult for teachers, so they should not be used.
C. Education should close doors for students who are not talented enough.
D. Every student should have the opportunity to learn and grow with others.
【答案】D
【解析】 主旨大意题。末段最后一句"Every student deserves a chance to grow together with others."是全文主旨句,每个学生都应该有机会与他人一起学习和成长。"deserves a chance"与选项D中"should have the opportunity"同义替换。故选D。

We picked up rubbish from the grass and watered the young trees along the path. Some of us also helped the cleaners sweep the fallen leaves. In the afternoon, we visited an old people's home near the park. We sang songs for the elderly and listened to their stories. I was tired but felt very proud because we did something meaningful for the community. I hope to take part in more volunteer activities in the future.
