As reported by National Geographic (《国家地理》), plastic pollution has become a terrible threat to ocean life. Every year, millions of tons of plastic waste enter the ocean, hurting sea animals and destroying their homes. Luckily, many young people are taking action to change this, and Boyan Slat is a shining example.
Boyan Slat, a Dutch environmentalist, first noticed the serious plastic pollution in the ocean when he was 16 years old. During a diving (潜水) trip, he saw more plastic bags and bottles than fish in the water. Shocked by what he saw, he decided to find a way to clean up the ocean.
At the age of 18, Boyan started a project called “The Ocean Cleanup”. He designed a special system that uses ocean currents (洋流) to collect plastic waste automatically (自动地). This system can catch plastic rubbish of all sizes, from small microplastics to large plastic bottles.
Over the years, his project has cleaned up thousands of tons of plastic from the ocean. He also calls on people around the world to reduce plastic use and protect ocean life. His story, reported by many foreign media, shows that young people can make a great difference in environmental protection.
Boyan’s effort tells us that everyone can do meaningful things for protecting our planet. As students, we can refuse single-use plastics and join environmental activities to help save the ocean and all its creatures.

Recently, AI painting has become a popular new course in many junior high schools across China. It is a new technology that helps students turn their creative ideas into beautiful artworks quickly.
To create an AI painting, students just need to type simple descriptions and the AI program will make several nice paintings in seconds. Students can then change colors, styles and details to make their works better. Liukou Central Primary School in Huangshan City held its first AI art class on April 22, 2026. The teacher showed students how AI draws pictures from simple words. She typed “a swimming dog” and “a panda playing on a skateboard”. In a short time, the AI created clear and lively paintings. The students watched carefully and cheered loudly. They couldn’t wait to follow the instructions and create their own pictures. After class, Lin Hua, a 14-year-old boy, said it was so amazing to see his simple words turn into nice pictures so fast.
Teachers think this course is very helpful for students. It not only develops students’ imagination and creativity but also lets them experience modern technology in daily study. Many students love it, saying AI painting makes art classes more enjoyable and makes them love art and science more.
However, teachers also remind students not to depend too much on AI tools. After all, true art needs hard work and practice. AI is just a useful tool, not a replacement (代替) for students’ own new ideas.
8. Why does the writer write about Liukou Central Primary School?
A. To show the importance of art lessons.
B. To tell us how to draw traditional paintings.
C. To give an example of AI painting classes at school.
9. What should students do if they want to create an AI painting?
A. They should change colors, styles and details.
B. They should type some words to describe what they want to draw.
C. They should watch carefully, cheer loudly and follow the instructions.
10. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Lin Hua thinks AI painting is really amazing.
B. AI can help students turn words into paintings fast.
C. Teachers think students should always use AI tools.
11. What’s the best title of the passage?

Do you want to travel around the world? Lexie Alford, from California, America, finished traveling to every country in the world at the age of 21.
Lexie Alford was born in a traveling family. Her mother began her own travel business at a young age, and always took Lexie with her on all of her travels. By the time she was only 18 years old, Lexie had already visited 70 countries. That made her want to visit the rest of the world. In October 2017, Lexie began a trip to visit all 195 countries in the world. Two years later, she finished it.
Lexie used planes, boats and trains to get around. But she liked to travel by train most. “Traveling on trains is slow travel. I can watch the changing views from the window,” she said.
For Lexie, there’s nothing better than traveling. Even in the hard times, she never thought of giving up. “I’m lucky I made it at last. I felt tired, but it was still an exciting trip. I experienced nothing but love and kindness from the people I met in each and every country,” she said. “And I learned a lot about the world. The world would be so boring if everything was the same everywhere. The differences make discovering new cultures such a beautiful experience.”
Lexie hopes others, especially women and young people, can go out and see the world. Her biggest goal is to encourage others to push their limits (限制), no matter how big or small they may be.

We live in such a big and beautiful world. Why not spend some time traveling just like Lexie?
