I wrote when I felt like it. Then one day, a friend asked me what my dream was. When I said it was to be a writer, he said these words that changed my life, “You don’t have to want to be a writer. You are a writer; you just need to write.” So I started calling myself a writer. Everywhere I went, I introduced myself as “Jeff Goins, Writer,” and even put it in email signatures (签名) and on my Facebook page. And you know what? I started acting like it. Eventually, I even began to believe it. It turns out that sometimes you do have to fake (假装) it before you make it. The lesson here is simple: If you wait for someone to give you permission to start pursuing (追求) your dream, you’ll be waiting for a long time. You have to begin before you think you’re ready. After I decided to pursue my dream, I still had to find the time to do it. Working a full-time job and having a wife and other things to do, I didn’t have enough free time. I had to find time to write. For me, that meant getting up early. Like, 5:00 a.m. early. Every morning, I would wake up, get my coffee, and write for two hours. At first, this was difficult; I had to force myself out of bed and downstairs before the sun rose. But eventually, it became a habit. I did it without even thinking about it. And soon, what started as a discipline became a daily joy. By doing this, I learned the excuse I had given myself — “I don’t have enough time” — wasn’t true. I did have enough time; it was just hiding in “inconvenient” places. These days, most people I meet are talking about their dreams. For example, they want to bravely pursue a successful career. However, they’re doing it all wrong. They think they need to take a huge leap out into the unknown when, in fact, the opposite is true. So if you have a dream, just take action. And don’t say you don’t have time for it. 41. When the author began writing, he ________. A. didn’t treat writing very seriously B. just wrote about what he liked C. pretended to be a full-time writer D. wrote whenever he had time 42. What does the author’s friend suggest he do? A. Start to cheat himself. B. Dream of becoming a writer. C. Consider himself as a real writer. D. Take a writing lesson to be a writer. 43. How did the author find time for writing? A. By working part-time. B. By doing few other things. C. By reducing his sleeping time. D. By making good use of his free time. 44. What does the author mean by saying “the opposite is true” in the last paragraph? A. We should prepare for our dreams. B. We should take small steps over time. C. We should make time for our dreams. D. We should take big steps in life’s work. 45. What’s most probably the author’s purpose in telling his life story? A. To help us know better about him. B. A new study finds that 75 percent of kids between 5 and 17 say that although they love surfing on the Internet, they still want to read books. The Kids & Family Reading Report also says that 62 percent of kids prefer reading printed books rather than those on a computer. At the same time, those who search an author’s website or use the Internet to find books by a particular author, are more likely to read books for fun every day. The study also once again proves that the time kids spend reading books for fun reduces after the age of eight and continues to drop through the teen years. The report is a follow-up to a 2006 study. But this time the focus is on the role of technology and when kids’ interest in reading starts to drop. “Despite the fact that after the age of eight more children go online daily than read for fun daily, high frequency (频繁) Internet users are more likely to read books for fun every day,” says Heather Carter, a writer of the report. One in four kids between 5 and 17 say they read books for fun every day and more than half of kids say they read books for fun at least two to three times a week. One of the key reasons kids say they don’t read more often is that they have trouble finding books they like — a requirement that parents underestimate (低估). The study also finds that parents have a strong influence on kids’ reading, but only about half of all parents begin reading to their kids before their first birthday. The percent of children whose parents read to them every day drops from 38 percent among 5 to 8-year-olds to 23 percent among 9 to11-year-olds — exactly the same time that kids’ daily reading for fun starts to drop. “Parents’ engagement (参与) in their child’s reading from birth all the way through the teen years can have a great influence on how often their children read and how much they enjoy reading,” adds Carter. 46. Her friends would take it everywhere, treating it like a classmate. “When Lyla came in, she would play with the bear, and it was her connection to her class,” Bogardus says. In order to have friends, you have to be a friend. But how can you be a good friend at school? Listen — Listen when they are talking. Don’t say anything unless they ask you a question. Sometimes it’s not necessary for you to have anything to say; they just need someone to talk to about their feelings. Help them — If your friend is ever in need of something, be there to help them. You should try to put them first, but make sure you don’t do everything they want you to do. Try to take an extra pencil or pen with you to classes in case (以防) they forget one. Have a little extra money in your pocket in case they forget something they need. Be there for them — Try to make something for your friend to help make them feel better in hard times. Making cards and encouraging them are among the nicest things you can do for a friend. Marilyn Monroe, a famous U.S. actor, once said, “I often make mistakes. Sometimes I am out of control. But if you can’t stay with me at my worst, you are sure not to deserve (值得) to be with me at my best.” Always remember this! If you don’t want to stay with your friends when they’re in hard times, then you don’t deserve to be with them when they’re having a good time ______— Try to make plans with your friends. Go shopping, go for ice cream, have a party, go to a movie and so on. Take time to know each other even better by doing something you both enjoy. By planning things together, you both can have a good time. And you’ll remember these things when you’re all old! 36. While your friend is talking to you about his or her feelings, you should ______. A. give him or her some advice B. just listen unless asked C. calm him or her down D. share your feelings as well 37. When we provide help for our friends, we should ______. A. try to do everything for them B. put them before ourselves C. change their bad habits first D. ignore their faults 38. What can we learn from Marilyn Monroe’s words? A. Life without a friend is death. B. A friend is easier lost than found. C. A friend in need is a friend indeed. D. A man is known by his friends. 39. Which of the following can be put in the blank (空白处) of the last paragraph? A. Make plans B. Enjoy yourself C. Understand your friends D. Play with your friends 40. What is the passage mainly about? A. How to find a good friend. B. How to help friends in trouble. C. How to be a good friend. D. How to make more friends. B For years, I played around with writing. B. To tell us how to become a successful writer. C. To explain why many people like dreaming. D. To tell us how to make our dreams come true. C The saying that children don’t like reading any more has been proved untrue. 46.
