Passage B
14-year-old Leanne Fan from San Diego, California, was named the grand prize winner of the 2022 3M Young Scientist Challenge, the nation’s top middle school science competition.
Leanne Fan developed the Finsen Headphones, a low-cost headphone device that uses machine learning and blue light therapy (疗法) to detect and treat mid-ear infections in children—potentially preventing up to 60% of hearing loss in children. The world sees 700 million cases of mid-ear infections every year. Fan hopes that this can be an effective and low-cost treatment option for the thousands who are affected.
Three years ago, Fan learned about Niels Finsen, who won the Nobel Prize in 1903 after inventing light therapy to treat bacterial (细菌的) infections. “I thought, ‘This is an amazing idea, and I can apply it to something else in my daily life,’” Fan said.
Fan took home the top prize, earning the title of “America’s Top Young Scientist” and $25,000. She is planning to use some of the prize money to start the patent process for the headphones. Fan is optimistic that the Finsen Headphones will be able to help people in the near future.
“Being part of the 3M Young Scientist Challenge was absolutely the best part of my year,” Fan said. “I could meet scientists that are my age and going for their dreams too, and made some friends.” She hopes to inspire other girls who want to become inventors. “I had an idea to use blue light to kill bacteria and three years later, I’m here,” she said.
39. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A. The cases of mid-ear infections. B. The process of blue light therapy.
C. The cost of the headphone device. D. The description of the headphones.
40. What inspired Leanne Fan to create the headphones?
A. Her own daily life. B. Her desire for the Nobel Prize.
C. The facts of bacterial infections. D. Niels Finsen’s invention of light therapy.
41. Which of the following can best describe Fan?
A. Outgoing and diligent. B. Patient and optimistic.
C. Creative and dedicated. D. Hardworking and persistent.
42. What can we learn from Fan’s story?
A. Even a small idea can go far. B. Many hands make light work.
C. Roses given, fragrance in hand. D. Actions speak louder than words.
Passage C
In the face of all kinds of changes in nature and life, our survival and development have been closely tied to our complexity. An idea called self-complexity refers to people’s thoughts about their different roles. It is the key to a strong and lasting identity (the sense of self) which can help us go through unexpected changes we all face.
With self-complexity, people have developed various parts to their identities. For example, imagine a woman who sees herself as student, wife, daughter and tennis player and who has a wide variety of life experiences. Social scientists would say that she has high self-complexity. On the other hand, a man who regards himself only as a student or only as a member of the hockey team and who has limited life experiences would be said to have low self-complexity. For those with high self-complexity, the various parts of the self are separate. This means the positive and negative thoughts about a certain part of the self won’t affect (影响) thoughts about other parts.
A large body of research shows that if you depend too much on any one part of the self, you will become fragile. When one’s identity connects too closely with the only one part that he cares deeply, then one will easily get stressed and burnt out when unexpected changes appear. This is especially true for an athlete during periods of change when his main—and all too often, only—sense of identity feels at risk. Yet while it may be heightened for athletes, it’s a pattern that holds true in all walks of life: if you want to be excellent and experience something fully, then you’ve got to go all in, but only to a point.
If your identity becomes too involved in any one part, then you are likely to suffer when things change. So what you need to do is to challenge yourself to put the various parts of your identity into a whole. This allows you to emphasize (强调) and reemphasize certain parts of your identity at different periods of time. The result is a fluid (流动的) sense of self.
Developing a fluid sense of self doesn’t mean you can be careless or just do things without effort. Caring deeply about the people, activities, and projects you love is undoubtedly the key to a rich and meaningful life. The problem is not caring deeply; it is when your identity is too closely fixed to any single goal.
43. Which most probably shows you have high self-complexity?
A. You complete your science project with music on.
B. You turn to the people around you when in trouble.
C. You make an effort to improve English through practice.
D. You keep a balance between schoolwork and sports training.
44. The word “fragile” in Paragraph 3 probably means “________”.
A. cold B. lazy C. weak D. careless
45. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Most people get stressed out more easily than athletes.
B. A strong identity comes from going all in for a single goal.
C. Doing well in one area betters other parts of a person’s identity.
D. Developing a fluid sense of self helps deal with unexpected changes.
46. What’s the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To introduce different ways to face challenges.
B. To stress the importance of trying hard in one area.
C. To remind us to care about various parts of the self.
D. To discuss the meaning of a strong and lasting identity.
Passage D
I had to say something after reading The Anxious Generation. It is going to sell well, because Jonathan Haidt is telling a scary story about children’s development that many parents are led to believe. However, the book’s repeated suggestion that digital technologies are rewiring our children’s brains and causing the epidemic (流行病) of mental illness is unsupported by science. Worse, the crude proposal that social media is to blame might distract (分心) us from effectively responding to the real causes of the current mental-health crisis in young people.
Researchers have searched for the effects suggested by Haidt. Our efforts have produced a mix of no, small and mixed associations. Most data are correlative. When associations over time are found, they suggest not that social-media use predicts or causes depression, but that young people who already have mental-health problems use such platforms more often or in different ways from their healthy peers.
We are not alone here. Several analyses and systematic reviews converge on the same message. An analysis done in 72 countries shows no consistent or measurable associations between well-being and social media globally. Moreover, studies from some authorities find no evidence of intense changes associated with digital-technology use.
As a psychologist studying children’s and adolescents’ mental health, I appreciate parents’ frustration (沮丧) and desire for simple answers. As a parent of adolescents, I would also like to identify a simple source for the pain this generation is reporting. There are, however, no simple answers. The beginning and development of mental disorders are driven by a complex set of genetic and environmental factors.
More young people are talking openly about their mental-health struggles than ever before. But insufficient services are available to address their needs. In the United States, there is, on average, one school psychologist for every 1,119 students. We have a generation in crisis and in desperate need of the best of what science and evidence-based solutions can offer. Unfortunately, our time is being spent telling stories that are unsupported by research and that do little to support young people who need, and deserve, more.
47. What is presented in The Anxious Generation?
A. Scary stories affect children’s brains.
B. Parents are responsible for children’s health.
C. Teens’ mental illness results from screen time.
D. The epidemic of mental illness is unavoidable.
48. What does “the same message” underlined in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Many countries do research in mental health.
B. Well-being and social media are closely related.
C. The young are trapped in the mental-health crisis.
D. Social media don’t necessarily cause mental illness.
49. What is implied in the last paragraph?
A. Positive stories should be shared. B. Broader research should be done.
C. Effective actions need to be taken. D. Financial support needs to be provided.
50. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To suggest ways to help those in need. B. To encourage parents to brave the crisis.
C. To recommend a newly-published book. D. To give a voice to children’s mental issues.
Passage E
The Science of Risk-Seeking
Sometimes we decide that a little unnecessary danger is worthwhile because when we weigh the risk and the reward, the risk seems worth taking. ____51____ Some of us enjoy activities that would surprise and scare the rest of us. Why? Experts say it may have to do with how our brains work.
The reason why any of us take any risks at all might have to do with early humans. Risk-takers were better at hunting, fighting, or exploring. ____52____ As the quality of risk-taking was passed from one generation to the next, humans ended up with a sense of adventure and a tolerance for risk.
So why aren’t we all jumping out of airplanes then? Well, even 200,000 years ago, too much risk-taking could get one killed. A few daring survived, though, along with a few stay-in-the-cave types. As a result, humans developed a range of character types that still exists today. So maybe you love car racing, or maybe you hate it. ____53____
No matter where you are on the risk-seeking range, scientists say that your willingness to take risks increases during your teenage years. ____54____ To help you do that, your brain increases your hunger for new experiences. New experiences often mean taking some risks, so your brain raises your tolerance for risk as well.
____55____ For the risk-seekers, a part of the brain related to pleasure becomes active, while for the rest of us, a part of the brain related to fear becomes active.
As experts continue to study the science of risk-seeking, we’ll continue to hit the mountains, the waves or the shallow end of the pool.
A. It all depends on your character.
B. Those are the risks you should jump to take.
C. Being better at those things meant a greater chance of survival.
D. Thus, these well-equipped people survived because they were the fittest.
E. This is when you start to move away from your family and into the bigger world.
F. However, we are not all using the same reference standard to weigh risks and rewards.
G. New brain research suggests our brains work differently when we face a nervous situation.
Section 4 Writing (20’)
Part 1 Read and answer the following questions. (10’)
On a small hill in Huaping, Yunnan, there is a small school. However, over the past twelve years, it has rewritten the fate (命运) of 1,804 poor girls by sending them to universities.
Zhang Guimei, now 63, is the headmaster of this school. She began teaching in Huaping, one of China’s poorest areas, twenty years ago. The teacher wondered why many girls in her class would just one day stop coming to school. After some investigations (调查), Zhang learned that they were from very poor families. These girls were forced to work or get married at a young age. “We often say that we want every child to have a fair start,” she said. “But these poor girls don’t even have a chance to stand on the starting line.”
Zhang wanted to change this. She spent years trying to raise money. Finally, in 2008, she set up the Huaping High School for Girls. It’s China’s first and only free public high school for girls.
Zhang gets up at 5 a.m. every day to turn on the lights on each floor of the teaching building. Many girls are timid (胆怯), the headmaster explains. She wants them to feel safer on their way to classes. After years of tiring work, Zhang is now in poor health, but the school and the children matter more than anything else in her mind.
Zhang’s story has warmed hearts all around China and inspired many to follow in her footsteps. Zhou Yunli was one of her students. After she finished university, she heard that her alma mater (母校) was short of math teachers. She immediately returned to the school to teach. “Without Ms Zhang, I would be nobody,” Zhou said with a smile. “When you become strong, you must remember to help others. This is what Ms Zhang taught us.”
