A new Chinese TV drama, Zhu Jue or Leading Role, has become very popular recently. It tells the story of a Qinqiang Opera artist. Even before it was shown on TV, it got a lot of attention online. One big reason is its theme song. The singer uses a special Qinqiang style.
The story follows the life of Qin Yi’e, a well-known Qinqiang Opera artist. The story covers more than forty years. It shows how Qin Yi’e grows from a poor girl in the countryside of Shaanxi to a famous star on the stage. Her life changes as China develops. Qin Yi’e faces many difficulties. Qinqiang Opera is mostly found in Shaanxi Province and nearby areas like Gansu and Qinghai. It has the oldest and largest musical system among all Chinese operas. Qinqiang Opera has two kinds of tunes (曲调): huan yin (happy tune) and ku yin (sad tune). Each kind is used for different stories and characters. The main instrument is the banhu. Artists also have special skills, such as spitting fire and doing hat dances.
Today, cultural experts are working really hard to protect this art form. The first Qinqiang Opera Festival took place in Xi’an in 2000. There is also a Qinqiang Opera Museum at Xi’an Jiaotong University. It opened in 2009 with more than 500 exhibits (展品).

An optical fiber monitoring system (光纤监测系统) was set up at the 1,500-year-old Hanging Temple in Shanxi Province in late March. The system checks shaking and risks from the environment and human activity. The Hanging Temple, also known as Xuankong Temple, is famous for its special design. Its position in a deep valley helps protect it from rain and sunlight.
However, the temple now faces serious challenges. More visitors cause shaking that could affect how strong the temple is. Natural disasters also increase the risk of falling rocks and land movement. After hundreds of years, its wooden parts are deteriorating and out of shape. The area has had strong earthquakes in the past and remains at risk of future earthquakes.
The monitoring system uses small sensing devices (传感设备) placed at 40 key points across the temple. These devices provide nonstop information on how the building reacts to natural forces, visitor movement and nearby building work.
The sensing devices do not harm the old wooden building. They can pick up small changes in shaking patterns (模式) over time. The information is sent to a center that shows a 3D picture of the temple’s condition as it happens.
Professor Zeng Jinyan says, “The system helps decide the largest safe number of visitors and provides scientific support for protecting the temple. The findings will also help save other similar old sites.”
The Hanging Temple has lived through many earthquakes over the centuries. Studying it may offer new ideas for modern earthquake-safe buildings.
42. Why was the monitoring system set up at the Hanging Temple?
A. To make the temple more beautiful for visitors.
B. To check the temple’s condition and keep it safe.
C. To repair the temple’s wooden parts.
D. To stop earthquakes from happening.
43. The underlined word “deteriorating” in Paragraph 2 probably means “________”.
A. getting stronger B. staying the same C. becoming worse D. turning bigger
44. What is an advantage of the sensing devices?
A. They send warnings to visitors directly.
B. They are easy to carry around the temple.
C. They work only when there is a strong earthquake.
D. They can sense shaking without harming the temple.
45. What can we infer from Professor Zeng’s words?
A. The technology is helpful for protecting other ancient buildings.
B. The temple will be rebuilt with modern materials soon.
C. The system is only helpful for the Hanging Temple.
D. Modern buildings are stronger than ancient ones.
