Why the Limits of Langnnge Are the LImits of the World
I think a foreign language class should be offered in every school, but not just teaching one foreign
language-it should be tons of them. The idea would be to learn words from all different languages that lack an
English41.These words would fill the gaps in our language,offering42 into what other
cultures have noticed that we may have overlooked. This was the inspiration behind my podcast Fihy W'onds
forSnow,which43 the idea that Inuit langunges have multiple words for snow.
Language shapes how we think and experience the world, and the principle applies universally. The more
words we have for something, the more attention we pay to it,and the more 44 our understanding
becomes.By expanding our vocabulary, cspecially with wonis that don't exist in English,we expand our
capacity to notice and45 the world around us.
In the podcast,I explore these linguistic46,or"lacunae,"and the words that could fill them. Here
are a few that I especially like.
Niksen (Dutch):The Art of Doing Nothing
In our world, where productivity is often the highest virtue, the idea of doing nothing can seem shameful.
We are 47 to feel guilty if we aren't constantly checking off to-do lists or maximizing every moment.
But in Dutch culture, niksen offers a different perspective. It is the art of doing nothing without guilt-of
simply existing in a state of rest, allowing the mind and body to reset.
Ha'aha'a (Hawaiian):Humility Through Interdependence
In a society that often 48 individual achievement, the Hawaiian word ha'aha'a offers a profound
contrast. This form of humility arises from a deep awareness of our interdependence. In Hawaiian culture,
people understand no one achieves anything alone-we are all interconnected. To practice ha'aha'a is to
recognize that we are part of a greater whole.
These words have become more than vocabulary 49 for me.They've made me think differently.
Without them, some concepts can remain 50or under-appreciated.Language doesn't just help us
describe reality-it helps us see it.By learning the untranslatable,we might learn to live a little differently.
Section C
Directions:For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A,B,C and D.
Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.
Stop Asking "Am I Bilingual?"and Ask This Instead
Most people think of bilingualism as an either/or proposition:You either sound native in two languages or
you are not bilingual. But that narrow definition 51 millions of people who navigate life in multiple
languages, each in their own way.I believe bilingualism is a spectrum and that understanding different types of
bilingualism means not letting language 52you.
My niece understood everything her grandmother said in Spanish but 53 to speak it.Why?At a
family gathering,an aunt had laughed at her pronunciation in front of everyone,so she never tried again.
Language is deeply tied to identity. When someone criticizes how we speak,it feels like54of who
we are.For receptive bilinguals,who already feel 55 about their speaking abilities,correction doesn't
motivate improvement;it confirms their fear that they don't belong in that language.
There are two common misconceptions that deserve focus.
First,we often wrongly assume that age of 56 equals proficiency. Many immigrant children speak
their heritage language at home until they go to school, where English becomes 57.By college,English
feels more comfortable, not because they learned it first, but because they use it more and, critically, were
educated in it.
Second, receptive bilinguals-those who understand a language but produce little or no speech in
it-aren't inferior. With little formal linguistic support, they understand a minority language because it remains
part of their environment.For them,receptive bilingualism is a rational58to their environment.They
developed the skills they needed.Their59 isn't less valuable than production.
3
Most people don't realize that the type of bilingual you are today can change based on your environment,
needs, and choices.I've watched students gain fluency through years of practice.I've also seen the60.
Friends who grew up fluently bilingual gradually lose their heritage language after years of not using it.
Bilingualism is 61.
This matters because it gives you 62.If you're a receptive bilingual wishing to speak your heritage
language, you can build on sophisticated comprehension rather than start from scratch. If you learned a
language as an adult and feel limited by occasional mistakes, remember language proficiency isn't determined
by when you learned it,but by how you63 it.
Next time you hear someone 64 their own bilingualism-"I don't really speak it"or "My French
isn't good enough"-ask them:What type of bilingual are you?And what type do you want to become?
Understanding the spectrum isn't just about labels. It's about recognizing however you use two languages,
you're already bilingual. The only question is whether you'll let that 65 open doors or close them-and
whether you'll help others do the same.

III.Reading Comprehension
Directions:Read passage A,B,and C.Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements.
For each of them there are four choices.Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the
passage you have just read.
(A)
Right before my grandmother died,a succession of negative events happened to me.During my walk to
work every morning,I had a bad habit of drowning myself in ruminations about everything going wrong in
my life:Why couldn't I sleep last night? Will work make me feel worse?Do I have to go?
After my grandmother's funeral,I decided to call my mom during my walk to work.I wanted to make
sure she was okay and provide her with a listening ear.Regardless of what I had going on(on top of losing my
grandmother),I knew my mom needed my support. She seemed audibly brightened by the fact that I called her,
and she thanked me at the end of our conversation.I wanted to continue helping her through this difficult time,
so this phone call became our daily routine.
Every time we spoke,I didn't worry about my own grief and anxiety-instead,I focused on my mom.My
ruminations stopped before they even had the chance to begin;they were replaced by my efforts to make my
mom feel better, smile and laugh during her period of grief. And I didn't realize it until much later, but those
calls were exactly what I needed as well.Through that daily process,I was healing.
A 2016 study published found that giving had greater benefits than receiving.Participants in the study
who gave help showed reduced stress and increased feelings of reward in their brain imaging. Some of us
might not need a study to prove that. For me,my mom taught me the importance of helping others long ago.
She used to say the easiest way to be happy is to do at least one mitzvah (Hebrew for"act of kindness")every
day.But through helping my mom,so many years later,I was able to realize the validity of her words. My
daily calls,my "acts of kindness,"helped me move past the internal struggles I was waging.
"I was on the edge of a cliff, and you were my life line"my mom said to me about a month-and-a-half
after my grandmother died."You were the only person I could really talk to.You were my emotional support
daughter.I don't know where I would be if it were not for you."
"I'm glad I was able to help you,Mom.But ifI'm being honest, being there for you helped me too."
66.The word "ruminations"in Paragraph I is closest in meaning to
A.rational reflections on everything
B.quiet but strong disapproval
C.repetitive negative thoughts
D.sudden doubts about oneself
67.Why did the author decide to call her mom every day?
A.Because she had a habit of calling her mom in the morning.
B.Because she wanted to distract herself from work pressure.
C.Because she hoped to support her mom through the hard time
D.Because she urgently needed her mom's emotional support.
68.What change happened to the author after she started calling her mom daily?
A.She became more anxious about her daily troubles.
B.She found her negative thoughts gradually fade away.
C.She decided to wage an internal war against her mom.
D.She started to complain about her life to her mom.
69.Why does the author write this passage?
A.To advise readers to call family or friends while walking to work every day.
B.To show family members are the only ones who can help us out of trouble.

A common experience among bilinguals or multilinguals is "code switching,"or shifting between
languages within a single conversation or even sentence.New brain imaging findings published this month by
Sarah Frances Phillips underscore the ease of these switches and reveal that the supporting neurological
patterns are highly similar to those in monolingual people. The study confirms that code switching, which
some multilingual speakers view as"cheating,"is a normal and natural behavior.
Phillips grew up in a bilingual household with a South Korean mother and African-American father,
frequently code switching between Korean and English. This firsthand experience led her to recognize gaps in
both linguistic and neurobiological understanding of code switching. She emphasized the importance of
developing models for how brains operate across languages, rather than relying solely on monolingual
frameworks.
The study touches on the debated "bilingual advantage"hypothesis, which argues bilinguals excel at
cognitively demanding tasks requiring the.inhibition of certain information to complete assignments
successfully. These tasks tap into everyday skills like attention and working memory.
Phillips cited Judith Kroll's research suggesting social aspects of language switching (e.g.,deciding when
and how to switch)may explain this advantage. For Spanish-English bilinguals, conversing with another
bilingual peer is the easiest mode,as they can use any words or combinations to convey thoughts. In contrast,
communicating with monolingual speakers (either English or Spanish-only)requires significant effort to
suppress the non-shared language, according to the adaptive control hypothesis.Current understanding of the
bilingual brain holds that both languages are always accessible, even when interacting with monolinguals,
forcing bilingual individuals to further develop working memory and attention skills to avoid incomprehensible
switches.
Phillips'new study focused on brain activity during language switching while composing words.
Magnetoencephalography(MEG),the measurement of the magnetic field generated by the electrical activity of
neurons, was used to track 20 English-Korean bilingual participants, observing neural responses during word
combination.In monolinguals,pairs like"icicles"and "melt"trigger a larger activity peak in the left anterior
temporal lobe due to meaningful combination, while non-combinable pairs (e.g,"melt"and "jump")do not
produce this effect.
The study replicated these monolingual findings in bilingual participants:meaningful pairs like "icicles"
and "melt"triggered increased activity in the left anterior temporal lobe compared to non-combinable pairs.
This pattern was observed both during language switching (between English and Korean)and across
orthographies(Roman and Korean characters),regardless of language or word representation.
Phillips noted that the left anterior temporal lobe's ability to combine concepts meaningfully without
slowdown demonstrates that this process is natural for the brain, and something bilingual individuals should
not avoid. She stressed that code switching is natural for bilingual people, while maintaining a single language
is more difficult.Despite many bilinguals holding negative attitudes toward code switching(viewing it as"bad"
or believing they should stick to one language),the research confirms it is not harmful to the brain."It's
important to recognize the fact that something doesn't look like monolingual behavior doesn't mean it's
deviant,"she emphasized.
73.What is the core conclusion of Phillips'new study?
A.Code switching is a normal and natural behavior that doesn't do harm to the brain.
B.Bilingual speakers are faster at cognitively demanding tasks than monolinguals.
C.The social aspects of language switching can help explain the bilingual advantage.
D.The left anterior temporal lobe is only active when processing words in one language.
74.What motivated Phillips to conduct research on code switching?
A.Lack of research on bilingual advantage.
B.Her experiences of growing up bilingual.
C.The debate over bilingual advantage.
D.Needs to develop new research methods.
75.The word"deviant"in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to
A.acceptable
B.temporary
C.abnormal
D.beneficial
5
76.What does the research reveal about code-switching?
A.It relies on brain parts distinct from those for monolingual language processing.
B.It creates a bilingual advantage by suppressing language for monolinguals.
C.It enables faster conceptual processing than monolingual speech.
D.It shares the same neural mechanisms with monolingual comprehension.

My 6,000 days with UNV
As I complete my 6,000 days with the United Nations Volunteers (UNV),I find myself reflecting on a
journey that has been nothing short of extraordinary.77These 6,000 days also mirror UN Volunteers'
evolving role in accelerating the Sustainable Development Goals, from promoting inclusive goverance to
advancing climate resilience and youth empowerment through volunteer action.
I have seen volunteers walk through disaster-hit areas as first responders, spreading education about why
voting is so important, ensuring people are aware of their rights in underserved communities, working on
preventing violent extremism, and serving with dignity and compassion in places where hope seemed dim.
78
From Bonn to Bangkok,Istanbul to Islamabad,Nairobi to New Delhi,I have had the privilege of working
with some of the most dedicated professionals across the UNV family.79We are all bound by a shared
commitment to service.
Over the years, the group of people I've worked with has come to hold a special place in my heart. Our
connection goes beyond a mere professional relationship.I have been fortunate to work under supervisors and
managers who believed in me and gave me space to learn, room to improvise and the encouragement to rise
stronger.80They taught me that leadership is not about giving direction;it's about enabling people to
find their own.

Voluntourism-when affluent Westerncrs spend loads of money for the opportunity to travel to and
"improve"a community-is gaining popularity. This is usually done through a travel agency 1 sets up
the voluntourists with a region in need.Indeed, many of these "voluntourists"probably have good
intentions-they are willing to assist people who2 not have the same resources as them. However, their
efforts often have no beneficial long term effect on the community.
Voluntourists are mostly assigned menial labor such as building schools and houses. This makes almost
no sense.Professional bricklayers from the community could easily build the school faster and 3 better
safety and craftsmanship. The community would probably be better off with funds4(transfer)directly
to it for the independent construction of local infrastructure.
The travel companies turn a profit, and the volunteers get some great memories, but the community
5 leave behind rarely reaps more than short-term benefits from their trip, especially as volunteers
usually don't return or think about the long-term for the community.Voluntourism may even harm a
community. For example, the orphanages may make conditions worse so that visitors pity the children more
and end up6(give)more money.
There also exists a disturbing fact7 volunteers often treat the people they claim to help in a
culturally insensitive manner-things they definitely wouldn't do in a developed country. This idea of shelling
out tens of thousands of dollars to"fix"a country while in reality treating the people88 they
were inferior sounds arrogant.
If volunteers 9(not allow)to take improper photos of their journey and share them all over social
media,would they still go?Undoubtedly,there are people who would say yes,but 10 (help)in a
meaningful and sustainable way instead of doing temporary favors, they should take a step back and try to
work on solving the underlying societal problems behind these poor communities.
