In 2021,at the age of 50,Jonathan's life took a surprising turn as he
registered in a solar photovoltaic (PV)()training course at Kaiboi National
Polytechnic in Kenya-which is part of UNESCO's Belter Education for Africa's
Rise (BEAR)project. The training was aimed at retooling and reskilling youth and
adults for changing job markets.
Jonathan earned a Certificate in Electrical Engineering in 1991.After serving
six years as a technician at Moi University,he got laid off and was forced to enter a
string of informal jobs in Kenya's Jua Kali sector,a Swahili term for the informal
economy of casual laborers and craftsmen who work in the hot sun, often with little
security or structure. While he occasionally fixed solar PV,he admits that his skills
fell far behind modern standards.
Everything changed when he joined the BEAR II training in PV.The hands-on
approach and exposure to updated equipment provided him with new skills,
opportunities, and in consequence, opened new doors for him.
After earning his certification,Jonathan saw his client base expand
dramatically.People who once dismissed him began calling him for jobs, from
lighting homes to fixing solar-powered boreholes().One of his biggest
assignments came in Lodwar,in Kenya's arid north. The job earned him a sum he
had never dreamed of making from his trade.
“The BEAR IⅡtraining was my redemption,”Jonathan says softly..“Before
that,I was already being written off because of my age.People told me to stop
wasting time going back to school and just focus on educating my children. But I
knew I needed to change my story."
Thanks to the project, people like Jonathan can not only secure an income and
a future for themselves but also empower their communities and local economies.
Jonathan's story is a powerful reminder that technical retooling is not a luxury but a
necessity in a rapidly changing world to build a sustainable tomorrow.
24.What happened to Jonathan after he lost his job at Moi University?
A.He looked into craftsmen's living conditions.
B.He returned to school for more certificates.
C.He worked full-time to fix solar PV.
D.He took up tough temporary jobs.

You have probably heard of the social-media addiction trial that recently took
place in Los Angeles.A young woman took Meta and YouTube to court, accusing
them of making her addicted to social media-and she won. This interesting court
case raises many questions that there are currently no clear answers to,but that
people should think about.
Social media is extensively used.As many as one in every three people uses
social media, and in the USA,people reportedly spend around 6 hours a day on it.
In 2025,Facebook had over 3 billion users, followed by WhatsApp and Instagram
with about 3 billion each. With such extensive use,it is not strange that social
media addiction (SMA)has become a focus for many researchers.
One initial research area is the potential classification of SMA.It is worth
noting that the DSM-5,a diagnostic tool for psychologists, does not recognize SMA
as a distinct mental disorder;it is often discussed as a condition that requires more
research. Thus, the conversations around SMA are not necessarily straightforward.
However, within research literature,SMA has been described as a specific form of
digital technology addiction. It refers to the heavy use of social media platforms
which can lead to harmful life consequences. It also shares some components with
behavioral disorders like gambling ()including conflict, tolerance and
withdrawal.
Should social media be regulated (by law? This is another difficult
英语

question. As more researchers agree that SMA may be a genuine addictive disorder,
it should perhaps be managed to reduce potential risks-much like tobacco,
alcohol, and gambling. The cognitive complexity involved in deciding what to view
online is also one that should be carefully debated when it comes to children. In
most societies, children are guided as to what they can watch in cinemas or on
television. It is difficult to see why social media ought to be any different.
28.How does the author introduce the topic?
A.By citing a case.
B.By giving a definition.
C.By making a comparison.
D.By explaining a phenomenon.
29.What does the author say about SMA?
A.It has unproven consequences.
B.It is no different from gambling.
C.It arises from social media overuse.
D.It is clearly regarded as a mental illness.
30.What is the author's attitude towards monitoring social media by law?
A.Favorable.B.Dismissive.
C.Unclear.
D.Opposed

B.Legal Regulation:A Necessary Step
C.Social Media Use:A Global Phenomenon

When you casually click a Buy Now button while online shopping,a new
T-shirt may be part of a complex global web of commerce harming the environment.
Consulting giant McKinsey estimates that the fashion industry alone accounts for as
much as 4%of total global climate emissions().Those ballooning emissions
are driven by increased appetites for ever more new clothes. This worrying trend has
led to a sharp rise in scientists and start-ups trying to engineer their way out of the
problem with all manner of less environmentally damaging fabrics.
One of those companies,San Francisco-based Rubi, thinks it can make an
impact on the issue in a laboratory by absorbing some of that harmful CO,and using
it to create carbon-neutral textiles()that can then be made into clothes.
英语
第7页共13页
Unlike conventional textiles, which rely on raw plant resources, this fabric gives
waste carbon a second life without consuming much energy. The result should be
fiber that is practically identical to the real thing, but without the need for any more
felled trees.
Rubi's transformation procedure fundamentally relies on using a variety of
enzymes(酶)to chemically transform captured CO2 into cellulose(纤维素).It's
similar to lab-grown meat, but for plant fibers. In nature, this cellulosic production
system takes place when trees slowly sink carbon from the atmosphere and transform
it into the cellulose found in their trunks and branches. For centuries, clothing
makers have turned that cellulose into a fiber mixture and then used it to produce
textiles.
Clothes made from CO2 aren't commercially available yet,but that may soon
change. In 2023,Rubi committed to turning captured CO2 into sustainable clothing
entered into a pilot agreement with Walmart, which said it would test the use of its
carbon capture technology to explore how it could properly be used on a larger scale
in the giant's supply chain.
32.What's the main cause of rising carbon emissions in fashion industry?
A.Shopping on the Internet.
B.Expansion of start-ups.
C.Lack of environmental regulation.D.Desire for the latest clothing.
33.What is the advantage of carbon-neutral fiber?
A.Less laboratory work.
B.No additional tree cutting.
C.Better product quality.
D.Zero energy consumption.
34.What does paragraph 3 mainly focus on?
A.The key feature of natural cellulose.
B.The process of making CO2-based textiles.
C.The role of enzymes in CO2 transformation.
D.The similarities between cellulose and lab-grown meat.
35.What can be inferred about Rubi's cooperation with Walmart?
A.It has made carbon clothes marketable.
B.It has brought huge profits to both sides.
C.It intends to popularize the new technology.
D.It will completely change Walmart's supply chain.

Taylor was troubled by serious anxiety in 2023,which greatly influenced her
daily life and physical health. She often felt uneasy and upset, unable to keep a
peaceful mind in study and life. She consulted a professional doctor and finally got
a medical diagnosis-chronic anxiety.36 The doctor gave a special
suggestion:step outside, take off shoes and touch grass gently when feeling trapped
in endless worries.
Doubtful as she was about such a simple method,Taylor still decided to follow
the doctor's advice. She gave it a try one afternoon when her bad mood became
obvious once more.37 Calmness came instantly and her inner pressure faded
away little by little.Encouraged by the pleasing result, she made up her mind to
spend more spare time connecting closely with nature.
38 Nowadays,an increasing number of medical workers recommend
"nature prescriptions"for patients with mental problems. With solid scientific
evidence, outdoor time is widely recognized to ease mental trouble and improve
people's overall physical and mental health.Modern people face huge pressure from
study, work and social life, making this natural treatment more meaningful.
Nature serves as a powerful hidden healer in our busy daily life.It can
effectively ease our tired minds and lessen negative emotions after tight study or
heavy work.It offers us a quiet chance to free ourselves from daily
pressure.39
Spending long hours in nature can benefit us,yet it is not a must.
40
Gradually, anyone can build a more stable and healthier state of mind with the help
of nature.
A.This is far from a single personal experience.
B.It worked much better than she had expected.
C.Many people fail to realize the value of nature.

Possible version 1:
Dear Chris,
I'm happy to hear you're interested in our school's Science Festival.Among the three zones,I suggest you visit the
Robot Building Zone.
Here are my reasons for recommending this zone.First,it's a hands-on activity. You can assemble small robots with
bricks, motors and sensors, and even make them move. It's a great way to learn basic mechanics and programming.
Second, the zone offers clear English instructions,so language won't be a problem. You'll also work in teams, which
makes it more fun.
I believe you'll enjoy creating your own robot.Have a great time!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
Possible version 2:
Dear Chris,
I'm glad you're excited about our school's Science Festival. If you ask me,the VR Sports Zone is the best choice for
you.Here are my reasons.
First,it's highly interactive. You can wear a VR headset and play virtual tennis or boxing. The motion tracking
makes you feel like you're in a real game.Second,as an exchange student, you might find it easier to join because no
Chinese is needed-the instructions are mostly visual.Plus,it's a great way to relax and exercise at the same time.
Enjoy the fun of VR sports!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
Possible version 3:
Dear Chris,
I'm glad to know you're interested in our school's Science Festival.Among the three zones-Robot Building Zone.
VR Sports Zone, and AI Poem Creation Zone-I strongly recommend the Al Poem Creation Zone.
My recommendation is based on two reasons.First, this zone perfectly combines modern Al technology with
traditional Chinese culture. You just type a few keywords, and Al instantly generates a classical poem, which is both
magical and educational.Second,it offers a unique cross-cultural experience. You can try typing simple English words-
Al will translate and transform them into ancient-style verses. It's a fun bridge between languages and cultures.
I'm sure you'll have a unique experience there.Enjoy the festival!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

One possible version:
After school,I saw Colette sitting alone on the wall, waiting for her mum.I took a deep breath, walked toward her
and sat down beside her."I'm sorry,"I said, looking at my shoes."I was jealous. That was really childish.Colette
listened patiently and turned to me.Then she smiled-a real smile."It's okay,"she said, her eyes soft with
understanding. She shared how lonely and anxious she'd felt on her first day here and how she missed her hometown in
France.Gradually, our conversation flowed easily, and my previous jealousy melted away, replaced by genuine warmth
and empathy.
Just then,Miss Taylor came out and smiled at us."Well, this is a nice picture,"she said. She praised me for
being kind and brave enough to reach out, adding that true friendship lies in understanding rather than competition.
Before long,Colette's mum arrived. We exchanged sincere smiles and promised to hang out together the next day. That
small moment taught me a precious lesson:popularity isn't about being Queen Bee,but about having the courage to say
sorry and make room for someone new.
