Cool Suggestions to Save Water
1. Take Short Showers
Play a short song when you take a shower. Try to finish your shower when the music stops!

Put out a water jug (罐) to save rainwater. It’s a great “natural drink” for your lovely flowers!
4. Boil Less Water
Only boil as much water as you need in the kettle (壶). If you’re making a cup of tea, fill your cup with water first, then pour it into the kettle.
5. Fix Leaks
Is your tap “crying”? Ask an adult to fix the leak quickly, so you can stop wasting drops.
6. Use Full Loads
Collect enough clothes to fill your washing machine before turning it on. It not only helps save water, but also saves you time!

Passage 1
“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view…until you step into his shoes and walk around in them.”
I asked Atticus if he was going to win the case.
“No, honey,” he said.
“Then why?”
“Simply because we were licked (鞭打) a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win,” he said. “In our courts (法院), when it’s a white man’s words against a black man’s, the white man always wins. They’re ugly, but those are the facts of life.”
“But why try, then?”
“Because,” he said, “there’s something in our world that makes men lose their heads — they can’t think clearly. They’re afraid, and when they’re afraid, they fight against each other. But you, Scout, you’re not afraid of people. You don’t judge them before you know them. That’s what makes you different.”
He stopped, looking out of the window.
“I’m going to defend (为……辩护) Tom Robinson. He’s an innocent (无辜的) man. And if I don’t, I couldn’t hold up my head in town. I couldn’t even tell you not to do something again.”
“But if you lose, won’t people hate you?”
“They might. But I’d rather be hated for doing what’s right than loved for doing nothing. You see, when you’re young, you think courage is about fighting. But real courage is when you know you’re licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.”
I didn’t say anything. I just sat there, thinking.
“And Scout,” he added softly, “if you ever get into trouble—and you will—remember this: the truth doesn’t always win, but it’s always worth telling.”
1.What can we infer about Atticus’s job from the passage?
A.A lawyer. B.A teacher. C.A policeman. D.A judge.
2.Why does Atticus say “we were licked a hundred years before we started”?
A.To show that he has already lost the case before it even begins.
B.To explain the unfairness that makes success nearly impossible.
C.To warn Scout that fighting against unfairness is actually useless.
D.To express his agreement to the way how laws work in his country.
3.What is the correct order of Atticus’ key points when talking to Scout?
① True courage is trying your best even if you know you will lose.
② Scout is a different person who doesn’t judge others easily.
③ He must defend Tom Robinson to keep his self-respect.
④ The truth is always worth telling, even if it doesn’t win.
A.②→③→①→④ B.③→②→①→④ C.②→①→③→④ D.①→②→③→④
4.Which student’s understanding of Atticus’ words is the most proper?
A.Lily: We should avoid arguments to keep people from hating us.
B.Mike: We should only fight for things that we are sure to win.
C.Emma: Doing what is right matters more than winning itself.
D.Ben: Courage means using physical power to stand up for others.
Passage 2
I saw a man lying on the floor. His hands and feet were tied up. There were two men standing beside him. One of them held a lantern, and the other held a gun.
The man on the floor kept begging, “Please! I won’t tell anyone!”
Each time he said that, the man with the lantern smiled evilly and said, “Indeed, you won’t have any chance to tell anyone!”
The man holding the gun was about to shoot, but the other man said, “Wait!” They talked in a low voice for a while, and then walked towards me.
I quickly ran away and hid behind some boxes. After that, the two men stood by the deck railing and talked.
“Let’s just put the stolen things in our boat and leave,” the man with the lantern said. “Soon, this steamboat will be washed back into the river and sink (沉没). When that happens, old Jim Turner inside will surely die in the water.”
“But what if it doesn’t get washed back?” the other man asked.
“I think we can wait for a while and see.”
When they went back inside, I ran away. I was covered in a cold sweat (汗水).
“Jim, I’m determined (有决心的) to do something,” I said, “there’s a group of criminals over there. We need to find their boat and untie it. Then they’ll be caught here, and the sheriff (警长) can catch them. We have to be quick. You check one side, and I’ll check the other.”
“And then what, Huck?”
“What do you think? We’ll get back on the raft (木筏) and sail away from here.”
Jim gave a big sigh and said, “We can’t, Huck. The raft is gone. It came loose and sailed away by itself. We’re stuck here.”
The bad news let Huck down, but soon, his eyes were full of hope again.

Passage 1
Want to learn better? Start by paying attention to your study habits. Bad habits can really slow you down. But here’s the thing — if you never stop to think about how you study, you might miss easier and smarter ways to learn. This is what we call reflective learning.
So, what is reflection? It’s simply thinking carefully about something to understand it better. Don’t get it wrong—it’s not about being negative. It’s about asking good questions, making smart choices, and learning from what you do.
Here’s the good news: everyone reflects in their own way. There’s no single right method. And no, you don’t have to treat it as extra homework. You can practice reflection anytime while you’re learning.
Now, let’s look at how reflective learning helps you. First, it helps you plan and decide what to do first. When many things compete for your time, your goals may become vague and you may lose your direction. Reflection helps you manage your time and set reachable goals. When you connect your school goals to your life goals, you’ll feel more excited about learning and find better paths to success.
That’s not all. Reflection can also help you stop putting things off and feel less stressed. By thinking about when and why you avoid tasks, you can change those habits and build your confidence.
So, how can you reflect well? Try keeping a reflective journal(日志). In it, write down what happened, what you did, what you learned, and what you could do better next time. You can also add feedback(反馈), pictures or notes.
Remember to write often, focus on one topic each time, ask yourself questions, and review your writing to find useful patterns. There are no wrong answers—just be honest and keep learning!
1.Why do students need to reflect on their learning?
A.To avoid negative questions. B.To make boring tasks fun.
C.To form a better learning habit. D.To slow down and relax for a while.
2.Which sentence uses “vague” with the same meaning as the underlined word?
A.Tom was vague about the reason for being late when we asked him.
B.The old woman had only a vague idea where the place was.
C.I had a vague feeling that I had forgotten something important.
D.After staying up late, Mary seemed vague in class and couldn’t focus.
3.According to the passage, which is the best reflective journal?

Passage 2
①Have you ever heard of “Biting into Spring”, or Yaochun (咬春)? It doesn’t mean really biting the season, but an old custom to welcome the Start of Spring. Why do people do it? Let’s take a look into history.
②Starting in the Zhou Dynasty, the emperor held ceremonies named Jianchun (荐春) to welcome spring. Later, in the Han Dynasty, there was an official event called “Whipping Spring” (鞭春), where a clay ox was whipped to encourage farming and express the wish for a harvest. During these events, people ate spring vegetables—the earliest form of Yaochun.
③Over the following centuries, the custom made its way from the rulers to the common people. In ancient times, people believed the early spring cold could cause illness. To fight this, those in the Wei and Jin dynasties ate the “Five-Spicy Plate (五辛盘)”, made of five spicy vegetables. This practice was thought to warm up the body and keep illness away.
④As time went on, new food joined the tradition. During the Tang Dynasty, the “Five-Spicy Plate” developed into a more delicious “Spring Plate” including other fresh vegetables. The famous poet Du Fu once wrote about enjoying Spring Plates. This shows how popular and loved the custom had become.
⑤In the Ming Dynasty, chewing radishes (嚼萝卜) became the most popular custom of Yaochun. People believed it could stop “spring sleepiness” and show strength to “bite” through difficulties. After all, as a saying goes, “those who chew on vegetable roots (根) can achieve anything.”
⑥By the Qing Dynasty, the custom had become what we know today—Spring Pancakes became the main food. Filled with vegetables, egg, bean sprouts, and meat, they turned into a delicious symbol of spring and family joy.
⑦Today, Yaochun reminds us of our ancestors’ wisdom. It shows how Chinese people have always watched the changes of nature and found ways to live better with them.
1.Which of the following is the correct order of the custom’s development?
a. Spring Pancakes turned into a tradition.
b. Chewing hard radishes was the most loved.
c. Fresh vegetables were served on plates.
d. Ancient rulers held events to welcome spring.
A.d-c-b-a B.d-b-c-a C.c-d-a-b D.c-a-d-b
2.Why did people eat the “Five-Spicy Plate” in ancient China?
A.To celebrate harvest time. B.To enjoy a delicious dish.
C.To warm the body and prevent illness. D.To keep awake from spring sleepiness.
3.Why is the underlined saying mentioned in paragraph ⑤?
A.It explains the health benefits of eating radishes.
B.It describes the taste of radishes in ancient times.
C.It expresses the deeper meaning behind the custom.
D.It shows the popularity of Yaochun in the Ming Dynasty.
4.According to the passage, what was the main reason for the development of Yaochun?
A.The spread of healthy eating habits.

Passage 3
Most of us see the Sun as a friend. It helps plants grow, keeps us warm, and who doesn’t love lying on the beach on a sunny day? But even though the Sun is good for us in many ways, too much of it can hurt our skin. That’s why people invented sunscreen (防晒霜) to protect ourselves.
Sunscreen works to block the Sun’s UV rays. These rays are harmful — they can cause sunburn, make our skin age faster, and even lead to skin cancer. There are two main types of UV rays: UVB and UVA.UVB rays are the ones that burn our skin, while UVA rays are more likely to age our skin and be harmful to our cells.
There are two main kinds of sunscreen. Physical blockers (物理防晒剂), like zinc oxide, act as a barrier to reflect UV rays. You may have seen lifeguards with white cream on their noses—that’s this type. They used to leave obvious white marks (白色痕迹), but new products can almost hide the white marks. Chemical blockers, on the other hand, take in UV rays but wear off faster. There might be some terrible influences from their chemicals to people.
All sunscreens have an SPF number, which tells us how well they protect us from UVB rays and sunburn.
Even if you don’t get sunburned easily, you still need sunscreen. People with darker skin or those who tan (晒黑) easily have some natural protection, but they can still be hurt by UVA rays. Babies under 6 months old should stay out of the sun completely, as their skin is too delicate.
Wearing sunscreen helps prevent skin cancer. UV rays do harm to the DNA in our cells, which can make cells grow out of control. This damage (伤害) can’t be seen until it’s too late.
Sun damage also causes early aging, making skin saggy. Remember, car windows block UVB but not UVA rays.
Use sunscreen daily. Reuse it every 2-3 hours when outdoors, especially at the beach or in snow. Stay in the shade and avoid the sun from 10 a. m. to 4 p. m.
The best sunscreen works for both UVA and UVB, SPF 30 or higher, and is water-resistant. Spray sunscreen needs several coats to work well. Enjoy the sun, but always wear sunscreen.
1.What can we compare physical blockers and chemical blockers to?
A.①② B.③④ C.①④ D.②③
2.Which is true according to the passage?
A.We can use sunscreen once a day in different situations.
B.We need two kinds of sunscreen to block the UV rays.
C.People with natural protection don’t need to use sunscreen.
D.Using sunscreen helps prevent skin aging caused by UV rays.
3.Which word in the passage has the meaning opposite to “saggy”?
A.harmful B.obvious C.firm D.darker
4.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Ways to Protect Our Skin B.The Importance of Using Sunscreen
C.Different Kinds of Sunscreen D.Harmful UV Rays from the Sun

Passage 1
Last month, Aunt invited us to the yearly outdoor spring celebration on her farm.
On the way, we decided to take a little side road as a shortcut (捷径). Just when we were in the very middle of nowhere, our car started making a strange noise. We had to call roadside service. We felt down as we were going to be late.
“We’re going to miss everything!” complained Tex.
“Look on the bright side,” said Dad, “Our car broke down in such a pretty place.” “I agree,” Mom said, taking out the picnic blanket (垫子). “How about walking over to that wildflower field and having our own springtime celebration?”
At first, the idea didn’t exactly make us kids jump up and down. But as we started looking around, cool things started happening.
“Hey!” Indi said quietly. “This huge butterfly landed on my knee!”
“She’s so beautiful.” I said. “Look, there are two lovely rabbits happily eating grass there!”
Just then, we heard a big sound, and hundreds of birds rose up out of the trees, and flew into the sky. “Wow, that is the most magical thing I’ve ever seen in my life!” I shouted.
Although the workers fixed our car, by then it was too late to get to the farm. So my parents let us eat cakes, and they were delicious! Anyway, it was a pretty special picnic.

Passage 2
(Victor, a young scientist with a big dream, was crazy about creating life. His hope was exciting, but soon led to regret and a sad ending...)
Chapter One
At university, I shut my door against the world. Letters from home lay unanswered. Friends knocked and finally stopped. Days became nights.
To make a living creature (生物), I had chosen body parts that I thought beautiful, and I imagined life would rise like sunshine: clean, golden, and bright. In this way I began my dream work that would finally shape my painful life.
Then, on a dark and stormy night, its breath started. A hand lifted, fingers moving as if testing the air. Its eyes opened, ugly and yellow, the lips dark, and the parts I had chosen for beauty turned out to be awful.
My blood froze. I stepped back, unable to breathe.
It was a monster(怪物), made from death! Without any hesitation (犹豫), I left it in darkness. But what I didn’t expect was that I left myself in an even darker place.
(…)
Chapter Nine
I do not remember much about the beginning of my life. I saw, felt, heard and smelt all at the same time. But I do remember the moment Victor fled (逃离) from me, leaving me with my first lesson: I was alone.
I got out of that university and just walked through the forest. The cold cut through my skin, and hunger clawed (抓) at my stomach. I tried to go near humans like a lost child, but only to get cries and hatred (厌恶).
“Go away! Ugly monster!”
“I will kill you if you dare to come closer!”
“…”
I tried to give a hand to the people in need. I tried to be kind and gentle.
But stones and sticks met me before a hand of welcome ever did. Even when I did help a child once, ▲
Day after day, I stopped trying to be understood and chose to make my pain seen. In time, I killed, and each death made my sadness deeper and my hatred harder. Something good and clean inside me disappeared, and I had learned the final lesson: when the world only sees you as a monster, it makes you one.

Passage 3
(Percy is visiting a museum with his classmates. After a strange accident, his teacher, Mrs. Dodds, takes him to an old park alone. Percy does not know that danger is waiting for him there.)
The old park was silent except for the wind. Percy stood near the broken entrance (入口), breathing hard. His hands were shaking, and his schoolbag fell to the ground. Across from him, his math teacher, Mrs. Dodds, was no longer smiling. Her eyes were sharp, and her voice turned cold.
“Give it to me, Percy,” she said, stepping closer.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Percy shouted.
Just an hour earlier, everything seemed normal. Percy and his class were visiting a museum. He tried to be nice. But Nancy, a girl in his class, kept laughing at his friend Grover. This made Percy very angry. Suddenly, Nancy fell into the fountain (喷泉). Everyone stared at Percy as if he did something wrong.
After that, Mrs. Dodds asked Percy to follow her. Grover looked nervous and tried to stop him, but Percy did not understand why. “It’s okay,” Percy told him. “I’ll be back.”
Now, standing in the park, Percy wished he listened before.
Before he could speak, Mrs. Dodds’ coat seemed to spread like dark wings (翅膀) as she rushed toward him. Percy turned and ran, but she was already in front of him. His heart beat fast and he couldn’t even call for help.
Then a pen flew through the air and landed at his feet. “Use it!” Mr. Brunner, his Latin teacher, shouted.
Percy caught the pen. As soon as he touched it, it turned into a bright shield (盾牌). He stared at it in surprise, but Mrs. Dodds was almost upon him. Without time to think, Percy raised the shield and pushed forward.
There was a sharp cry. The next moment, Mrs. Dodds disappeared into smoke. The wind became still (静止) again.
Percy stood there, holding the shield, unable to move. Mr. Brunner and Grover ran toward him, both staring at him strangely.
“What was she?” Percy asked.
No one answered at once. Percy looked down at the shield in his hand. He didn’t fully understand what happened, but he realized that he could no longer step back. Whatever was waiting for him, he would have to face it on his own.

The Scientific Method
The scientific method is a way to ask and answer questions. Scientists research and make observations (观察). They also do experiments (实验). Here are the steps for the scientific method.
First, think about what things make you curious to learn more. Make an observation. For example, you may have noticed that mold (霉) grows on most kinds of the foods. Then, you may ask yourself a question, “What conditions make the mold grow best?” It helps you focus on what you want to know. Next, you need to make a hypothesis (猜想). It comes from what you already know. So here, you may guess that mold grows best in cold and dark conditions. After that, it’s time to run an experiment to test your hypothesis! You could put the food in different conditions to see what will happen. Finally, the results come out and you’ll draw a conclusion (结论) —Are the results the same as your hypothesis or different from it?
Lab ReportName: Kevin Somers
Date: May 24, 2025
Project Title: Testing How Mold Grows
Question: I wonder what conditions make mold grow best.
Hypothesis: Mold grows best in cold and dark conditions.
Experiment:
·materials: √4 pieces of white bread √water
√1 paper bag √fridge·experiment time: 1
·method: 1.I put two pieces of bread on the dinner table. Some water was added to one piece of bread every day while the other remained dry.
2.I prepared two pieces of bread. I put one piece in a closed paper bag and left the bag on the top of the fridge because it’s warm there. I put the other piece in the fridge because it’s dark and cold there.
3.I examined these four pieces of bread every day for two weeks. I recorded every change on the bread.
Result:
1.The wet bread developed mold more quickly than the dry bread.
2.The bread on the top of the fridge developed mold more quickly than the bread in the fridge.
Conclusion:
1.Mold will finally develop on all of the bread.

【答案】1.A 2.B 3.A 4.C
1.根据第9段Atticus所说“I’m going to defend Tom Robinson. He’s an innocent man.”,可知他是一名律师。
2.Atticus所说的后半句“In our courts, when it’s a white man’s words against a black man’s, the white man always wins.”
3.②对应第7段“But you, Scout, you’re not afraid of people. You don’t judge them before you know them. That’s what makes you different.”;③对应第9段“ I’m going to defend Tom Robinson.”;①对应第11段“But real courage is when you know you’re licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.”;④对应最后一段“…remember this: the truth doesn’t always win, but it’s always worth telling”。
4.倒数第三段Atticus说“But I’d rather be hated for doing what’s right than loved for doing nothing.”,Emma的理解“做正确的事比赢得胜利本身更重要。”

1.原文“After the big winning, all the soldiers cheered for their general and believed that they would be unbeatable.”
3.原文“Zhao Yang thought it was true and decided to stop.”
4.原文“You are already a prime minister, the highest position for a minister. If you win in the attack against Qi, you get nothing new. If you lose, you will lose everything.”

A. B. C. D.
4.What is the best title for this passage?
A.Reflective Journals: Your Key to Better Grades
B.Reflect on Your Learning: A Smarter Way to Study
C.Reflection Beats Stress: How to Stop Putting Things Off
D.Reflective Learning: A New Way of Testing How You Learn
文章开头提到“Want to learn better? Start by paying attention…think about how you study, you might miss easier and smarter ways to learn. This is what we call reflective learning.”,说明反思性学习是优化学习习惯、提升学习效率的方式。
2.划线处“your goals may become vague”指目标变得模糊、不明确。
3.文中提到“Try keeping a reflective journal. In it, write down what happened, what you did, what you learned, and what you could do better next time. You can also add feedback, pictures or notes.”,即反思日志需要包含:事件、行为、学到的东西、改进方法,还可以加入反馈、图片、笔记等。
B.The orders given by ancient emperors.
C.The introduction of new kinds of foods.
D.The wish of ancient people for a better life.
【答案】1.A 2.C 3.C 4.D
2.第三段指出:“This practice was thought to warm up the body and keep illness away.”,说明古人吃五辛盘是为了暖身、预防疾病。
3.第五段谚语“those who chew on vegetable roots can achieve anything”,体现咬春习俗背后克服困难、积蓄力量的深层寓意。
(The wish for a better life)”而寻找的载体。
第三段第2-3句指出:“Physical blockers (防护), like zinc oxide, act as a barrier to reflect UV rays.”“Chemical blockers, on the other hand, take in UV rays but wear off faster.”
2.D选项“Using sunscreen helps prevent skin aging caused by UV rays.”与原文第七段第1句提到“Sun damage also causes early aging, making skin saggy”表述一致;A选项“We can use sunscreen once a day in different situations.”与原文倒数第二段第2句提到“Reuse it every 2-3 hours when outdoors”表述不一致; B选项“We need two kinds of sunscreen to block the UV rays.”与原文最后一段第1句提到“The best sunscreen works for both UVA and UVB”表述不一致;C选项“People with natural protection don’t need to use sunscreen.”与原文第五段第2句提到“People with darker skin or those who tan easily have some natural protection, but they can still be hurt by UVA rays”表述不一致。

If you try to stay open to what’s actually happening around you, you might just discover wonders beside you.

B.They thought the wildflower field was boring at the beginning.
C.They had seen the bird migration (迁徙) many times before.
D.They wouldn’t like to eat cakes after the car was fixed.
3.What’s the correct order of the following events in the passage?
A.①②④③ B.③④②① C.①③②④ D.③②①④
4.What does this passage mainly tell us?
A.Being close to nature is good for kids.
B.Spring has the power to bring happiness.
C.Keep positive and find beauty around us.
D.With our family around, our hearts are full of joy.
1.根据第二段“Just when we were in the very middle of nowhere, our car started making a strange noise. We had to call roadside service. We felt down as we were going to be late.”,这直接说明他们因为可能会迟到而感到沮丧。
2.根据第五段“At first, the idea didn’t exactly make us kids jump up and down.”,这表明孩子们一开始对野餐的想法并不兴奋,认为野花田很无聊。

4.What can we learn from the two chapters?
A.Humans shouldn’t get too close to monsters. B.People’s coldness may change one’s nature.
C.We can never depend too much on science. D.Monsters or bad people are born, not made.
【详解】1.“Chapter Nine”部分的第一人称叙述“I do not remember much about the beginning of my life. I saw, felt, heard and smelt all at the same time. But I do remember the moment Victor fled from me…”,这一章是从怪物的视角进行叙述的。
I stepped back, unable to breathe.”,此时他的情绪是害怕的。
前文提到“Even when I did help a child once”,后文又说怪物最终变得充满仇恨。
4.文章结尾指出“Something good and clean inside me disappeared, and I had learned the final lesson: when the world only sees you as a monster, it makes you one.”,怪物本心存善意,却因人类持续的冷漠、排斥与恐惧,最终变成了自己曾经被认为的“怪物”。
—Adapted from Percy Jackson
1.Why did Percy become angry in the museum?
A.Because he was asked to follow Mrs. Dodds.
B.Because Nancy made fun of his friend Grover.
C.Because Nancy pushed Grover into the fountain.
D.Because his classmate laughed at him in person.
2.What is the correct order of the events?
A.b→a→c→d B.d→c→a→b C.c→a→b→d D.c→b→a→d
3.What can we infer about Mr. Brunner?
A.He was surprised by what Percy had done.
B.He knew everything about Mrs. Dodds.
C.He prepared for the dangerous situation.
D.He was too afraid to face Mrs. Dodds alone.
4.What will most likely happen next?
A.Percy will ask why Nancy fell into the fountain.
B.Percy will wonder how the shield appeared in his hand.
C.Percy will return to the museum with his classmates at once.
D.Percy will soon learn more about what Mrs. Dodds really is.
第四段提到“But Nancy, a girl in his class, kept laughing at his friend Grover. This made Percy very angry.”,说明Percy生气是因为Nancy嘲笑他的朋友Grover。
2.原文中事件依次为:c——“Nancy, a girl in his class, kept laughing at his friend Grover. This made Percy very angry. Suddenly, Nancy fell into the fountain.”说明Nancy嘲笑Grover在先,掉进喷泉在后;a——“After that, Mrs. Dodds asked Percy to follow her. Grover looked nervous and tried to stop him”说明之后Mrs. Dodds' coat seemed to spread like dark wings as she rushed toward him”以及“Mrs. Dodds disappeared into smoke”说明最后Mrs.
3.根据文中描述,在珀西危险时,“a pen flew through the air and landed at his feet. ‘Use it!’ Mr. Brunner shouted”,说明布鲁纳先生提前准备了可以变成盾牌的笔并在关键时刻扔给珀西,因此可以推断他为危险情况做了准备。
4.最后一段提到“he realized that he could no longer step back. Whatever was waiting for him, he would have to face it on his own”,说明Percy意识到自己必须面对接下来的事,因此他很可能会去了解Mrs.
