Country music is a kind of American popular music. People also call it country and Western music. It first came from the west and the south of America in the early 1920s. Nashville in Tennessee was once the home of American country music. It became popular in the 1940s.
In the American West, cowboys had to watch the cattle (牛) all day long because they sometimes ran away. When the cowboys were alone with the cattle, they drank strong coffee to stay awake and sang to make the cattle quiet. The cowboys also sang to relax and have a good time. They sang about the stars and the moon, their families and their friends. Sometimes they played the guitar, the violin or other instruments (乐器).
In the American South, many people came from Ireland, Scotland, and England. They enjoyed their own kind of music. They used instruments like the guitar and the violin too. They also used instruments from their homes like spoons. When they visited their families and friends on holidays, they usually sang and played music together.
Country music has been popular for more than 100 years. One important reason for its popularity (流行) is that it describes life. It talks about love, jobs, home and so on. When we arrived there, we gave them some flowers and fresh fruit. Then we cleaned the windows and swept the floor for them. It took us about two hours. On May 24, 2021, 46-year-old Zhang Hong reached the top of Qomolangma, which made him the first blind person from Asia to conquer (征服) the world’s highest mountain. Erik Weihenmayer and Andy Holzer made it in 2001 and 2017. They are the only three blind mountain climbers who have climbed Qomolangma. Before heading for Qomolangma, Zhang had climbed up three mountains above 6,000 meters.
Born in Chongqing, Zhang became blind at the age of 21 due to glaucoma (青光眼). Both his father and uncle lost their sight because of the same disease, so Zhang knew exactly what life would be like for blind people from an early age. But luckily, he was saved by his wife. “I felt so hopeless then. But my wife was always there and encouraged me. Without her by my side, I couldn’t have pulled myself together,” Zhang recalled. Later, Zhang became a blind masseur (按摩师) and in 2012 he moved to Tibet.
In 2015, by accident, he heard of the blind American mountain climber Weihenmayer, who climbed Qomolangma. This gave him the idea of giving it a try. He then started to climb the mountains together with his guide. He did a lot of training such as rock climbing and walking on snow and ice.
Zhang also met many other mountain climbers from all over the world. They all encouraged him even though they spoke different languages. Zhang could feel their warmth through hugs or pats on his shoulder. Zhang said the climbing of Qomolangma taught him many things, including how to trust people.
“I can’t see the world, but I want the world to see me,” Zhang said. “I’ve got so much energy from my family and friends. Now I’d like to share that energy with others and encourage other disabled people.”

Taking tours plays an important part in our daily lives. Each holiday, many people visit big mountains, great rivers and beautiful islands (海岛) to enjoy natural beauty. Others go to ancient temples (古寺) and great buildings to explore the culture. Whatever your purpose is, travelling is one of the best ways for learning.
You may know some places by reading books or from others, but you can never get a real picture of these places until you visit them on your own. That is to say, seeing is believing. What’s more, if you are careful enough, you can learn much about geography and history of the places you visit during your travelling. While travelling, you can meet more people and make more friends. However, you also need to face some problems when you are travelling. First, places of interest are always full of people during holidays. Second, your guide may push you to shop here and there. So some people would like to stay at home rather than travel.
In my opinion, you’d better make a plan to where to go, when and how to leave, how long to stay and things to take before travelling. It helps to make your trip easier when you are travelling.

Feel down? Hug a tree! Recently, many Chinese young people have turned to trees to help with their stress. Although it sounds strange, there’s a science behind the act of tree-hugging.
It can be explained by the “biophilia hypothesis (亲生命假说)”. It was pointed out by US scientist Edward Wilson in 1984. He said that humans are born to love being around other living things. Humans’ love for nature is “in our DNA”. This idea helps to explain why people prefer natural, green views to city views. It’s also one of the reasons why people love cute pets.
Some studies have looked into why tree-hugging can help with our health. A study in 2021 reported that the activity can increase oxytocin (催产素). It’s a hormone (荷尔蒙) responsible for feelings. The higher the level of oxytocin is, the calmer and happier you may be. Hugging trees for only 21 seconds can lead to an increase (提高) in oxytocin.
Another hormone called cortisol (皮质醇) is a marker (标志) of stress. The brain produces more cortisol when the person is anxious, angry, or very sad. Hugging trees helps cut cortisol production, which makes us feel better.
Although the activity is helpful to us, it’s important to keep in mind that we shouldn’t hurt nature while doing it. Trees often hold valuable ecosystems (生态环境). Many small creatures (生物) live on the tree-and they are too small to be seen. You may want to be gentle when hugging trees-just like how you hug a friend!

“Research shows that people who live a greener lifestyle have higher levels of reported well-being,” says Dr. Mark Willamson, from the charity Action for Happiness. If we want to have a green lifestyle (绿色生活方式), we cannot ignore natural resources. A natural resource is any material found in nature that is useful and important to human life.
Many sources of energy come from natural resources. Sunlight, wind, coal, oil and natural gas are all natural resources that people use as energy sources. Natural resources are important. People need natural resources every day. Without natural resources, life would be impossible.
Some natural resources are renewable (可再生的), which can be replaced and used again and again. The sun provides us with light and heat. Solar energy can be used to heat water and make electricity for homes. Water is something all living things need. Moving water is also used to make electricity. Wind is used as a source of energy and it also can be used to make electricity.
Some natural resources are not replaced as easily as others. That’s because they need hundreds, thousands, or even millions of years to grow up. These natural resources are nonrenewable resources which cannot be replaced when they are used up. Sooner or later we will run out of them, like metals, oil, rock, nuclear, stone, and natural gas.
So it is very important for us to use the resources correctly. Living sustainably (可持续地) can be a good choice. This means buying fewer plastic toys, drinking from a reusable water bottle and turning off the lights that are not needed. Try our best to protect the natural resources and live a greener life!

Chinese table manners are a beautiful part of our rich eating culture. When enjoying delicious food in a Chinese meal, it’s about showing respect and sharing happiness together.
First come, seating arrangements (安排). The most honored (受尊敬的) seat is usually on the left side, facing east toward the door. This special seat is for the most important guest or the eldest person. Seats closest to this position are also good, showing respect. The least important seat is where waiters serve dishes—often for younger people or helpers.
Ordering dishes is like an art! If you’re hosting, always ask others what they’d like to eat. A good host orders more dishes than the number of guests to show generosity (慷慨). If you’re a guest, it’s polite to choose one simple, popular dish like fried rice or sweet and sour pork, rather than expensive seafood. Remember to thank your host when the dishes arrive!
How should we act during the meal? Use chopsticks gently—never point them at people or play with them. Take food quietly without making noise. Never talk with the mouth full. When using toothpicks, cover your mouth with your hand. Sharing food shows kindness, but always use serving spoons for shared plates, not your personal chopsticks. Before leaving, thank the host again for the wonderful meal.
These table manners show respect to elders, make guests feel welcome, and create a warm environment.

The Chinese character “Fu” is very important in Chinese culture. It means happiness and good luck. People use it to make wishes for the new year during the Spring Festival.
The tradition of putting the “Fu” character on walls, doors and windows has been there for a long time. People in the Song Dynasty (960—1127) had already been practicing the tradition. The history of sticking the “Fu” character on walls, doors and windows is long. When we put the character on walls, it can be both normal or upside down (倒转)—as in Chinese the “reversed (倒的) fu” means “Fu comes”.
Speaking of the “reversed fu”, there is a story behind it. Long long ago, in the Ming Dynasty (1368—1644), Empress Ma, wanted to do something to save the family. She ordered every family to put the character “Fu” in front of their doors.
All the people followed her order, but one family didn’t know how to read or write. They put the character upside down. On the second day, when the soldiers went to the streets, including the upside down one. When the emperor heard this, he was very angry. He ordered the soldiers to kill the family who had put the character in the wrong way.

People have kept animals for thousands of years. Animals have many different roles. For example, dogs and cats make great pets. I have recently heard that there are discussions about whether animals should live in zoos or not.
Although these days there are many laws that protect animals, it doesn’t make sure that animals are always treated well. Usually, animals make their homes in many different environments. Penguins often live in cold, icy areas. Tigers live in warm, wet forests. Lions live in wide, open places. A zoo is only one kind of environment. It must build special environments for its animals. These environments are expensive to make and they are not always perfect.
Modern zoos try to educate people as well as entertain. Humans do harm to the homes of animals every day. If people understand how important animals are to the world, then they will try harder to protect them. Zoos aren’t perfect, but maybe they can teach us how to live better together.
However, some people argue (争论) that zoos are not the best way to protect animals. They believe that animals should be allowed to live in their natural habitats (栖息地) and that humans should not affect their lives. They also point out that many zoos do not have enough space for the animals and that they are often kept in small cages. But zoos play an important role in educating people about the importance of saving animals and their homes.
Keeping animals in zoos has both advantages and disadvantages. I would raise money at my school if it would be helpful to animals in zoos.

Feel down?

阅读下面短文,根据其内容填空和回答问题。(1至4题每题答案不超过3个单词,5题须用完整句子回答。)
