Florence Nightingale is known as the founder of modern nursing. She was born in 1820 into a wealthy British family. At that time, wealthy women were expected to get married and manage households, not work as nurses. Nursing was considered a low-class job.
However, Nightingale felt a strong calling to help the sick. Despite her family’s strong opposition, she decided to become a nurse. In 1851, she went to Germany to study nursing. When the Crimean War broke out in 1854, Nightingale volunteered to go to the battlefield hospital in Turkey.
What she found there was shocking. The hospital was dirty and crowded. Soldiers lay on the floor without blankets. There was not enough medicine or clean water. More soldiers were dying from infections than from battle wounds.

She also set up a kitchen to prepare special meals for the sick. At night, she would walk through the hospital with a lamp to check on the soldiers. The soldiers called her “the Lady with the Lamp.”
