For former Chinese women’s soccer player Zhao Lina, her story began not under stadium lights but in the dusty schoolyard of Jinshajiang Road Primary School in Shanghai’s Putuo District.
Now 33, she still remembers joining the school soccer team in first grade — the tallest among all her teammates. The coach lined everyone up by height, and Zhao stood at the end of the line. Impressed by her height, the coach decided she should be a goalkeeper. But she never imagined one day she would step onto the international stage.
In the beginning, her only fan was her father. A decade later, she stood on the world stage at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, wearing the red jersey of China. She then felt the pure joy of playing, with the thunderous cheers from the packed stadium forever unforgettable.
One of her most unforgettable matches came in 2022, when China made a stunning 3-2 comeback against South Korea to reclaim the AFC Women’s Asian Cup after 16 years. It was the perfect high point and a year later, Zhao announced her retirement, closing an 18-year career.
After retiring from Team China in 2023, former goalkeeper Zhao Lina never truly walked away from the soccer field. Instead, she found a new mission — bringing soccer to children in China’s rural areas. Through her soccer charity program, Zhao plans to visit 100 remote schools, build fields, donate equipment, organize leagues and train local physical education teachers to coach. In the 10 months since her retirement, she has already helped build four soccer fields and deliver equipment to 40 schools.
Alongside her charity work, Zhao has also stepped into journalism. She served as a reporter for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
“Life isn’t a straight line,” she reflects. “Even athletes have peaks and declines. But when the next rise comes — if you’ve prepared enough and give your all — you’ll surpass your last peak. That’s what life and soccer have taught me.”
24. How was Zhao Lina first chosen to be a goalkeeper?
A. She was recognized for her natural talent.
B. She was encouraged by her father.
C. She was drawn to the position herself.
D. She was selected because of her height.
25. What is the goal of Zhao Lina’s charity work?
A. To encourage more PE teachers to play soccer.
B. To improve the soccer conditions in rural areas.
C. To help soccer team of China win more matches.
D. To keep herself away from the soccer field.
26. How is the passage mainly organized?
A. By comparing her early and later life.
B. By listing the challenges from her career.
C. By following the time order of her life.
D. By showing the procedures of her work.
27. Which saying best describes Zhao Lina’s story?
A. Every ending leads to a new beginning.
B. Life begins at the end of comfort zone.
C. Time and tide wait for no man.
D. Fallure is the mother of success.

What comes to mind when you hear the phrase “dress for success”? Perhaps it’s a no-brainer for you — wearing a nice suit so others will take you more seriously. But the truth is more complex (复杂的) and important. How we present ourselves doesn’t just change how others see us. It also changes how we see ourselves — and that can influence how we act.
A recent study shows this point well. When people believe that they look better, they act more kindly. They even donate twice as much to the poor as those who do not feel the same way. The researchers find that when people feel good about their appearance, they believe more people will notice them. This encourages them toward more generous (慷慨的) and helpful social behavior.
This new finding mirrors what scientists call the “halo effect”: it is common for people to believe that those who look good also have other positive qualities. In this way, they are more likely to be treated kindly or trusted. However, the new discovery is that this effect also works inwardly. When we feel we look good, we don’t just benefit from others’ positive opinions. We start to behave in ways that strengthen them. This change can begin early, as research shows even children are kinder to those who are “nice-looking”.
In short, our self-image and our generosity are closely connected. This can create a positive feedback loop (反馈循环): feeling good about our appearance builds up our confidence, which shapes our behavior in a positive way. In turn, the positive feedback from others strengthens our positive self-image. Therefore, dressing for success is not just about being seen by others. It is about becoming the kind of person who encourages kindness — both in yourself and in others.
28. Why does the author mention wearing a nice suit in Paragraph 1?
A. To stress the importance of good behavior.
B. To show the features of a formal lifestyle.
C. To suggest a way of achieving success.
D. To lead to more effects of dressing well.
29. How does feeling good about appearance affect a person according to the study?
A. It promotes kind social acts. B. It improves job performance.
C. It shapes one’s character. D. It causes self-centered behavior.
30. What is the new discovery about the “halo effect”?
A. Its effect is self-directed. B. Its power works on others.
C. Its basis is others’ kindness. D. Its influence is always strong.
31. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Dress for Confidence: Feel Good B. Dress for Confidence: Impress Others
C. Dress for Success: Gain Respect D. Dress for Success: Encourage Kindness
D
Besides its known benefits for mental health and connecting with nature, the hobby of birdwatching may have another surprising advantage: It can cause helpful physical changes in the human brain. A recent brain science study from McGill University shows that the deep mental effort needed for this activity has a real effect on our brain’s structure.
The research compared brain scans and thinking tests between expert birdwatchers, who could name hundreds of birds by sight and sound, and beginners. When doing bird identification (识别) tasks, the experts were not only faster and more correct, but their brains also showed much higher activity in specific areas. These areas are linked to advanced visual processing (seeing fine details), strong and focused attention (ignoring distractions), and working memory (holding and comparing information). Importantly, brain structure scans showed that these key areas were thicker and had better connections in the expert group.
These findings suggest that the specialized, demanding practice of birding — which needs quickly putting together small visual clues, sounds, and learned knowledge — does not just use the brain but actively strengthen and improve its wiring, like exercise builds muscle. This is important for brain health as we age. The study found that the normal loss of brain tissue and function with age was much less obvious in the expert birdwatchers. Researchers think that such long-term, complex mental activity helps build a “cognitive reserve (认知保护)”, making the brain stronger and better at dealing with damage over time.
“Our work shows that doing a challenging, skill-based hobby for life is linked to a protective effect for the brain,” explained lead scientist Dr. Robert Zatorre. The idea likely applies to other activities needing deep focus and learning, like playing music or learning a language. So, spending time watching and identifying birds is much more than a relaxing pastime. It is an active investment in long-term brain health, building a stronger and more agile mind that can better handle the natural changes that come with getting older.
32. What did the brain scans of expert birdwatchers show compared to beginners?
A. Their brains were less active in some certain areas.
B. Their brains were smaller in size but more efficient.
C. They used different senses when identifying birds.
D. Their certain brain areas were better connected.
33. Why does the author mention “like exercise builds muscle” in paragraph 3?
A. To explain how the brain strengthens by birdwatching.
B. To show how birdwatching benefits people’s muscles.
C. To prove that birdwatching is physically tiring.
D. To compare birdwatching with physical activities.
34. What does the underlined word “agile” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Sharp. B. Anxious. C. Strict. D. Solid.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. What to Expect from Birdwatching B. Effective Ways of Keeping Brain Healthy
C. How Birdwatching Reshapes the Brain D. Birdwatching — A Challenging Hobby

The annual marathon has long been the biggest and most beloved event in our small town. Every spring, crowds line the streets, bringing everyone together to celebrate courage and hard work. For as many years as I could remember, I had only ever stood on the sidelines, clapping and cheering as the runners passed by. I called myself a proud “couch potato” and had long believed that my own athletic days were firmly behind me. I was comfortable with my routine, never imagining I would ever join the runners myself.
But this year was different. My daughter, Lily, locked at me one evening and gently issued a challenge. “Just try the SK, Dad,” she said softly. “It’s not the full marathon, and I’ll run right beside you the whole way.”
I hesitated at first, feeling both nervous and unconfident. Still, I reluctantly accepted her challenge, determined not to let her down. The training turned out to be far tougher than I had expected. My lungs burned with every deep breath, and my legs felt so heavy that they seemed like lead. There were countless early mornings when I woke up tired and sore, wanting only to roll over and quit. Yet every time, Lily was already waiting by the door, her shoes tied and her smile bright. Her quiet persistence and faith in me pushed me to keep going, one step at a time.
Finally, race day arrived. The atmosphere was electric, filled with excitement, music, and the murmur of the crowd. We started slowly and steadily, careful not to rush. At the 3-kilometer mark, a steep, unforgiving hill loomed directly ahead. Halfway up, my strength began to fail. My breath came in short, painful gasps, and I had to slow to a shaky walk. “Go on without me, Lily,” I wheezed (喘着气说). “Don’t let me slow you down.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为 150 左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Lily stopped immediately and turned around to me.

How to Survive an Earthquake
Earthquakes are among the most destructive natural disasters, so it is vital for us students to master proper self-protection methods to keep safe.
To prepare for possible dangers in daily life, not only should we learn some basic knowledge about earthquake prevention, but it is also necessary to keep safe shelters in mind. Besides, it is advisable to prepare an emergency kit containing food, clean water and first-aid supplies just in case.
When an earthquake strikes suddenly, the first thing we need to do is stay calm. If we are indoors, we must hide under strong desks or tables immediately and stay away from windows or heavy furniture. It’s dangerous to rush down the stairs blindly. After the quake, we must watch out for falling objects and broken wires, follow rescue workers’ instructions strictly, and help people around us if possible.
Only by making full preparations and keeping calm can we protect ourselves well during an earthquake.

Lily stopped immediately and turned around to me. Her face looked calm and encouraging, without a slight sign of impatience. “Dad, we started together, so we’ll finish together,” she responded softly and confidently. The warmth and determination in her voice were so overwhelming as to light a spark of hope and courage within me. How could I let her down? I nodded and we continued to keep going. During the rest of the race, instead of rushing or pulling me forward, Lily just ran calmly beside at my pace, cheering me on silently. Her quiet support seemed magical and somehow gave me renewed strength. Together, we gradually picked up our pace and moved forward all the way.
Side by side, we crossed the finish line together. I was breathing heavily, my legs shaky, but my heart swelled with amazing pride. Lily looked up at me, her face bright with a big, joyful smile. I felt moved and proud, not because of the race, but because of her. In that moment, I realized this 5-kilometer was never just about finishing the race, but rather, it was about the courage and love my daughter gave me, the same I once hoped to inspire in her. I had not only stepped out of my comfort zone as a “couch potato”, but most importantly I felt my daughter’s love and support flowing back to me. Our children, more often than not, could be the ones to inspire and support us parents, reminding us of the strength we thought we had lost.

M: I only ate a fried egg and a slice of bread in the morning. I feel a bit hungry now.
W: Maybe you should eat more next time. I had a ham sandwich for breakfast today.
Text 2
W: You look tired! What time did you go to bed last night?
M: Pretty late. I watched a movie, but I didn’t finish it until midnight. Fortunately, I had already completed my homework by yesterday afternoon.
Text 3
W: How would you like your haircut, sir?
M: Just a trim, and cut the sides short, but not too short at the back. Thank you.
W: No problem.
Text 4
M: By the way, could you help me return these books this weekend?
W: Sorry, I’m afraid I can’t. I’ll be busy during the weekend.

W: We seem to have run out of milk. Our daughter needs it every day.

Text 6
W: Excuse me, sir. I’m looking for a bus stop. Last year, it was here, but it seems to have gone now.
M: That’s right. Oak Street was quite busy, and it was easy to be stuck in traffic. The street was widened six months ago, but there still wasn’t enough space left for the bus stop.
W: So has the bus stop gone completely?
M: No, it’s still around. It was moved to Abbey Street. You can walk to the next traffic lights and turn left. Then you’ll see the bus stop immediately.
Text 7
W: Hey, Henry, do you mind taking me with you when you go to your office for the meeting?
M: Well, Susan. I’d love to, but it’s a staff meeting. I’m afraid they probably wouldn’t even let you in.
W: Don’t worry, Henry. That is not what I mean. I plan to go to the dance studio. And if I can go with you, I won’t need to take the subway or a bus. You know, the studio is next to the café, near your company.
M: Oh, I see. And how are you going to get back?
W: Maybe you can ring me after the meeting and drive me home.
M: Okay. It’s my pleasure.
Text 8
W: Good afternoon, Mr. Bond.
M: Good afternoon, Jenny. You want to speak to me, right?
W: Yes. Can I ask you a favor?
M: Hmm…What’s the matter?
W: I’d like to take the morning off tomorrow, because my mother is ill in hospital. I want to be there to take care of her.
M: That’s OK. Is there anyone else who can help you?
W: My father is a pilot, and he is away from home at the moment. Tomorrow afternoon, my sister will come back from the bank and take my place.
M: Alright. Just make sure you will be back by two o’clock tomorrow afternoon. We have to discuss our sales goal for the next three months.
W: I won’t forget it. I have already finished my report, and I’ll print it out right now.
