As soon as I came to the sea shore, I was surprised to see that I had taken up my “home” on the worst side of the island; for here indeed the shore was covered with a number of turtles. while on the other side I had found three in a year and a half.
Here were many kinds of birds, some of which I had seen, and some of which I had not seen before. Many of them were very good meat. I could have shot as many as I pleased, but was very sparing of my powder and shot.
I realized this side of the country was much pleasanter than mine, but yet I had not a plan to move here; for as I was used to my “home”, it became natural to me.
I took another way to come back than that I went, thinking I could easily keep all the island so much in my view that I could not miss finding my first home; but I found I made a mistake. After walking about two or three miles, I found myself into a very large valley. The valley was surrounded with hills, and those hills were covered with wood, so I could not see which was my way by any direction but that of the sun.
Unluckily, the weather proved cloudy for three or four days while I was in this valley; and not being able to see the sun, I walked around very uncomfortably, and at last I had to find out the sea side, look for my post, and come back the same way I went.
In this journey my dog surprised a young goat, and I saved it alive from the dog. I had a great mind to bring it home if I could; for I had often been thinking whether it might not be possible to get and raise a goat or two goats, which might supply me with milk.

Built into the walls of a 326-metre-deep sinkhole in Hechi, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, a special cliffside bookstore in the Mianhua Sinkhole Scenic Area of Luocheng Mulam Autonomous County opened its doors in May, quickly becoming a new landmark for culture-tourism integration (融合) and gaining worldwide attention by bringing together natural scenery with an unforgettable reading experience. So far, it has welcomed over 100,000 visitors from home and abroad.
Visitors must climb a wooden walkway with more than 1,000 steps which are cut into the cliff (悬崖). This is an exciting “mini trip” before they arrive at this quiet and special place high up.
The founder, He Zhijian, said building the bookstore was very challenging. The sinkhole has steep and rocky cliffs, so special methods were needed to keep the structure safe. However, the sinkhole acts as a natural shelter, protecting the bookstore perfectly from bad weather: no matter how heavy the wind and rain, it never gets wet.
Two years ago, while visiting a famous Japanese bookstore called Tsutaya, he got the idea. Later, he improved the idea after seeing Tsutaya’s store in Hangzhou. The result is an open-air cliffside space with more than 10,000 books. The books line a 10-metre-high and 150-metre-long “canyon of knowledge”.
Wu Taichang, general manager of Guangxi Luocheng Mianhua Tiankeng (meaning sinkhole) Tourism Development Co., said the design breaks traditional bookstore boundaries, joining reading with the great views of karst (喀斯特) landscapes. The company is the area’s developer as well as operator. Wu said the goal is to encourage visitors to do more than just admire the sinkhole’s beauty and leave. “We want them to stay and enjoy its charm as much as possible,” he said. “That’s why we’ve built a cliffside bookstore, cafe, and hotel, along with boardwalks leading straight to the sinkhole’s bottom-letting tourists get close to the ‘heart of the Earth’.”
38. Which of the following is TRUE about the cliffside bookstore?
A. It is known to a few Chinese tourists. B. It gets wet when there is heavy rain.
C. It has over 10,000 books on the cliff. D. It is at the bottom of the sinkhole.
39. Which sentence should go in the empty box in paragraph 2?
A. Reaching the bookstore is an adventure in itself.
B. The bookstore is very easy for tourists to find.
C. Most visitors choose to drive directly to the entrance.
D. People can read books while enjoying the sunset there.
40. Why does the writer mention Tsutaya bookstore in Japan and Hangzhou?
A. To prove that Chinese bookstores are better.
B. To explain how to run a bookstore business.
C. To describe what a good bookstore looks like.
D. To show that He Zhijian got his idea from them.
41. From what Wu Taichang said, we can know _______.
A. the company wants visitors to take photos and then leave
B. visitors are encouraged to stay longer and enjoy the place
C. most visitors do not like the walkway to the bottom
D. the bookstore will be turned into a hotel and a cafe

While teens and young adults usually spend much more time on screens compared to other age groups, psychologists now warn that older adults are also becoming more dependent on phones.
Nancy Ries, a retired teacher, spends five to six hours a day on her phone. “I hate to say it, but that’s true,” she says. She’s part of a growing number of older adults who spend about four hours a day on phones. Addiction Resource.net surveyed 2,000 people between the ages of 59 and 77. Half of them check their phones within an hour of waking up. And 40% feel uncomfortable when they are away from their phones. ①________
“One key sign of being addicted to (上瘾) phones is feeling uncomfortable without a phone,” said Monica Riordan, a professor at Chatham University, who studies computer-based communication. She says phones have become central to our lives—not only for communication and social media but also for things like booking plane tickets and shopping.
“How do I scan and buy things without my phone?” Riordan asks. Phones offer so much freedom, but they can also keep us trapped. ②________ “Older people depend on phones because they often feel lonelier than younger people, who go to work or school and see friends regularly,” she said.
③________ “If it stops you from living a healthy life, then you may have a problem,” Riordan says. In the survey, 50% of older adults had not tried to reduce their screen time while about 30% tried but almost all failed.
④________ Experts recommend limiting phone use to two hours a day for fun. But Ries said her screen opens up the world to her. “I’m happy with what I’m doing. Even if someone tells me, ‘Do you realize that you’re using the phone too much?’ I’ll say, I’m okay with that,” Nancy Ries explained.
42. According to the passage, we can know ________.
A. 1000 people in the survey are addicted to phones
B. loneliness may make elders use phones more often
C. most elders feel sorry for depending on phones too much
D. 600 people in the survey managed to reduce their screen time
43. The sentence “Too much screen time may lead to health problems, such as sadness and worry.” can be put in ________.
A. ① B. ② C. ③ D. ④
44. Why does the writer mention Nancy Ries twice in the passage?
A. To compare her ideas with those of the professor.
B. To advise other elders to learn from her lifestyle.
C. To serve as an example of elderly phone dependence.
D. To prove retired teachers use phones more than others.
45. What is the best title for this passage?
A. Teens Spend More Time on Screens Than the Old.
B. Phones Offer More Advantages Than Disadvantages.
C. How to Cut Down Screen Time to Two Hours a Day.
D. Older Adults Are Getting More Dependent on Phones.

The air is thin and we have to rest several times on the short hike from camp. In front of us, we can just make out some animals. This is why we’re here—to observe Tibetan antelopes (藏羚羊).
Tibetan antelopes live on the plains of Xizang, Xinjiang, and Qinghai. Watching them move slowly across the green grass, I’m attracted by their beauty. I’m also reminded of the danger they were in.
My guide is Zhaxi, a villager from Changtang. He works at the Changtang National Nature Reserve. The reserve is a shelter for the animals and plants of northwestern Xizang. To Zhaxi, the land is sacred (神圣的) and protecting the wildlife is a way of life. “We’re not trying to save the animals,” he says. “In fact, we’re trying to save ourselves.”
The 1980s and 1990s were bad times for the Tibetan antelope. The population dropped by more than 50 percent. They were hunted for their valuable fur. Their living space became smaller as new roads and railways were built.
In order to save this species from disappearing, the Chinese government placed it under national protection. Bridges and gates were added to let the antelopes move easily and keep them safe from cars and trains. Zhaxi and other volunteers watched over the antelopes day and night to keep them safe from attacks.
The measures worked. The antelope population has recovered and in June 2015, the Tibetan antelope was removed from the endangered (濒临绝种的) species list. The government, however, does not plan to stop the protection programmes, since the dangers that the Tibetan antelopes face have not yet disappeared.
In the evening, I drink a cup of tea and watch the stars. I think about the antelopes and what Zhaxi told me. Much is being done to protect wildlife, but if we really want to save the planet, we must change our way of life.

例文
World Environment Day is on 5 June. Everyone can do something to make a difference to the world.
The environment around us is beautiful with green trees and clean rivers, but it also faces problems like rubbish pollution and waste of resources. To protect the environment, I always take reusable bags when shopping and sort rubbish into different bins.
I have two suggestions to improve the environment. First, schools should teach students more about environmental protection, because education can help us form good habits.
