Gutiérrez’s life would never be the same again after finding a copy of Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy in the rubbish 20 years ago. It happened while he was driving his rubbish truck through wealthier neighbourhoods at night and seeing thrown-away books. It inspired his wish to start rescuing books from the rubbish. He used to take home between 50 and 60 books every morning. Finally, he turned his book collection into a community library for children from poor families.
Colombia’s capital city of Bogota has 19 public libraries. However, these libraries tend to be far away from where poorer communities live. The choice of buying new books is non-existent for families struggling to make ends meet. Gutiérrez’s community library is a true representation of how one man’s rubbish can be another’s treasure.
Gutiérrez grew up poor, and his family could not afford to educate him after primary school. However, his mother was a book lover and read stories to him every night. Her love for books left a deep impression on Gutiérrez.
Today, his makeshift community library, called “The Strength of Words”, takes up most of his home in southern Bogota, and is piled (堆叠) from the floor to the top with fiction (小说) and non-fiction titles. Everything from school textbooks to storybooks can be found in his collection of more than 20,000 books! As word began to spread about his amazing project, people began sending him more books.
Despite having done so much for his community, Gutiérrez is not yet content to call it a day. He continues to search through rubbish cans for reading materials (材料). Today, the Gutiérrez family does not just want to start libraries in neighbourhoods. They want to create spaces for school children to spend their time reading.
Gutiérrez journey to give back to his local community is an amazing example of how every one of us can improve the lives of those around us. How might we take a leaf out of Gutiérrez’s books and impact the less lucky around us?
24. What drove Gutiérrez to rescue unwanted books?
A. Children’s living conditions. B. Leo Tolstoy’s life.
C. A community library. D. The unwanted Anna Karenina.
25. Why did Gutiérrez start “The Strength of Words”?
A. To improve the community life. B. To encourage children’s reading.
C. To create a harmonious neighborhood. D. To give his mother enough books.
26. What can best describe Gutiérrez?
A. Smart and generous. B. Calm and talented.
C. Creative and caring. D. Shy and well-educated.
27. What would be the best title for the text?
A. From Rubbish to Treasure B. Wish for Reading
C. Gutiérrez’s Kindness D. An Amazing Model of Education

AI Morality (Oxford University Press, 2024), edited by British philosopher David Edmonds, is a collection of essays exploring how AI will completely change our lives and the moral dilemmas it will set off, painting a picture of the reasons to be cheerful and to worry. In this excerpt (节选), Muriel Leuenberger, a postdoctoral researcher in the ethics (道德) of technology and AI at the University of Zurich, focuses on this very modern identity crisis.
An AI that tells you who you are and what you should do is based on the idea that your identity is something you can discover — information you or an AI may access. But this view misses an important point: we also choose who we are.
Continually depending on AI recommendation systems might calcify your identity. By recommending products and other contents, you become more likely to consume, think, and act in the way the AI system firstly considered suitable for you, gradually influencing you so much that you develop into who it took you to originally be.
This is, however, not a necessary feature of recommendation systems. In principle, they could be designed to broaden the user’s horizon, instead of maximizing involvement by showing customers what they already like. In practice, that’s not how they function.
Besides, by giving decisions to AI, you may fail to meet the moral demand to take responsibility for who you are. This concern weighs particularly heavy when making the most significant decisions. But even in ordinary cases like selecting movies, music, books, or news, it would be good to put recommendation systems aside from time to time, which in turn, calls for research, risk, and self-reflection.
An AI might state a lot of facts about you, but it is your job to find out what they mean to you and how you let them define you. The same holds for actions. Your actions are not just a way of seeking well-being. Through your actions, you choose what kind of person you are.
28. What does the collection of essays focus on?
A. Individual views of AI’s future. B. Various important roles of AI.
C. Recent policies on AI development. D. Possible benefits and risks of AI.
29. What does the underlined word “calcify” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Accept. B. Remember. C. Weaken. D. Reject.
30. What could recommendation systems be designed for in theory?
A. Considering the most ideal choice. B. Developing users’ broader vision.
C. Showing existing preferences. D. Attracting shoppers’ involvement.
31. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To propose independent thinking in the age of AI.
B. To stress the huge influence of AI.
C. To present the confusion brought by AI.
D. To prove the uniqueness of AI.

There is a day every year that most people look forward to because of a cake, balloons, presents and sometimes a party. Yes, this is your birthday. A “birthday” is described as the name given to the date of the annual event of a person’s birth. It is a global tradition for people to celebrate this specific day.
In the beginning, people did not have birthday celebrations, because people did not keep very good birth records. They weren’t even sure what year they were born. And when people started to celebrate the birthday, there was no tradition of bringing gifts, and guests attending the birthday celebrations would bring good wishes for the birthday person. However, if a guest did bring gifts, it was considered to be a good sign for the person of honor. Later, flowers became quite popular as birthday gifts.
Nowadays, different cultures have their own birthday celebrations. In Chinese culture, elders and family members gather around the one-year-old child and bring toys such as books, dolls and coins. It is believed that the child’s future career will depend on the object that he or she picks. The Chinese consider a child a year old at birth. In Japan, people’s 3rd, 5th, and 7th birthdays are the most important, because they will get to participate in the annual “Seven-Five-Three” festival. Participants usually visit shrines (神殿) to show thanks for their health and strength.
Some in Britain still practice an ancient way of celebrating birthdays by placing thimbles (顶针) and coins in the cake. The person who gets the coin will be wealthy and the one who gets the thimble will never marry. Ireland has a funny way of celebrating birthdays. It is believed that it is for good luck that a child is lifted upside down and gets “bumped” (撞击) on the floor! These bumps will depend how old the child is. An extra bump is also added for good luck.
32. What’s the main purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To lead in the topic of the text. B. To pick a way of celebrating birthday.
C. To show readers how to develop the text. D. To introduce how to celebrate the birthday.
33. Why didn’t people celebrate their birthday s in the beginning?
A. They didn’t have extra time. B. They didn’t have money at all.
C. They didn’t think it necessary. D. They didn’t remember the birthdays.
34. What do we know about the birthday in Japan?
A. Newborn babies should be brought to shrines.
B. Children have three most important birthdays.
C. Children have to visit the church to show thanks.
D. One-year-old children pick the objects around them.
35. What does the act of bumping mean in Ireland?
A. Great wealth. B. Good luck. C. Happy marriage. D. Long life.
Once a year in a small mountain village, the Mande people gather to hear the folk (民间的) stories of their traditions. The man playing an instrument called Sosso-Bala while singing is the storyteller. The storyteller holds all the folk knowledge of the Mande people.
Most of us don’t have a musical instrument that ties us together, but we have someone in our lives who’s the keeper of our folk knowledge. Often it’s the grandmother who keeps all our stories of wisdom ready to tell upon request. ____36____ What’s the best way to get a baby to sleep? Where do I come from? How can we raise children? Each story provides an answer. It’s useful that we speak with someone who knows how things are done.
____37____ Researchers have documented folk knowledge in other species like whales returning to parts of the sea that they’d given up a generation before or monkeys that communicate hunting skills to their younger generations. Folk knowledge is not only culture, it’s also survival. ____38____
Traditionally, we share it in small units — families sharing around a dinner table. ____39____ Look at any social medium, and you’ll see folk knowledge at work and at play. It explodes as we’re trained to look for information online, rather than from within. In this case, chances are that our questions can be answered with misinformation.
But we don’t really gather once a year to check our “folk stories” as the Mande people do; nor do we center our folk traditions around a musical instrument. The Internet has no reality except its own and, left unchecked, its wisdom isn’t systematic. ____40____So we should be careful with the kind of “folk stories” we find on the Internet.
A. It’s just confusion.
B. This is why we do it.
C. Human wisdom has been passed down through generations.
D. The stories can be useful for dealing with all kinds of doubts.
E. Nowadays, folk knowledge has increased to digital networks.
F. Now the Internet has made valuable folk wisdom at your fingertips.
G. Recently, we discovered that this very human practice isn’t limited to humans.

M: I see. So what eventually led you to join a national dance academy? Was it mainly your teacher’s recommendation?
W: Not really, it came more from my own feeling. I needed to improve my skills further and reach a truly professional level. So it was a very personal decision.
M: That makes sense. Speaking of creating and not just performing, have you ever tried to plan the dance for a full show? My friend tried it recently and found that it wasn’t just about teamwork; in fact, creating original work was far harder than he ever expected.

D 25. B 26. C 27. A

根据第一段中的“Gutiérrez’s life would never be the same again after finding a copy of Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy in the rubbish 20 years ago....It inspired his wish to start rescuing books from the rubbish.(20年前,Gutiérrez在垃圾中发现托尔斯泰的《安娜・卡列尼娜》后,人生从此改变。……这件事激发了他从垃圾中拯救书籍的愿望)”可知,是被丢弃的《安娜·卡列尼娜》促使他开始拯救旧书。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中的“Finally, he turned his book collection into a community library for children from poor families.(最终,他把自己的藏书变成了一个社区图书馆,供低收入家庭的孩子们使用)”、第四段中的“Today, his makeshift community library, called “The Strength of Words”, takes up most of his home in southern Bogota, and is piled (堆叠) from the floor to the top with fiction (小说) and non-fiction titles. Everything from school textbooks to storybooks can be found in his collection of more than 20,000 books!
根据第一段中的“He used to take home between 50 and 60 books every morning. Finally, he turned his book collection into a community library for children from poor families.(他过去常常每天早上把50到60本书带回家。最终,他把自己收藏的书变成了一个面向低收入家庭孩子的社区图书馆)”和第五段“Despite having done so much for his community, Gutiérrez is not yet content to call it a day. He continues to search through rubbish cans for reading materials (材料). Today, the Gutiérrez family does not just want to start libraries in neighbourhoods. They want to create spaces for school children to spend their time reading.(尽管为他的社区做了这么多,Gutiérrez还不满足于结束一天的工作。

D 29. C 30. B 31. A
根据文章第一段“AI Morality (Oxford University Press, 2024), edited by British philosopher David Edmonds, is a collection of essays exploring how AI will completely change our lives and the moral dilemmas it will set off, painting a picture of the reasons to be cheerful and to worry.(英国哲学家大卫・埃德蒙兹编辑的《人工智能道德》(牛津大学出版社,2024年)是一本论文集,探讨了人工智能将如何彻底改变我们的生活以及它将引发的道德困境,描绘了我们应该感到高兴和担忧的原因)”可知,这本论文集关注的是人工智能带来的潜在好处和风险。
根据文章第三段“By recommending products and other contents, you become more likely to consume, think, and act in the way the AI system firstly considered suitable for you, gradually influencing you so much that you develop into who it took you to originally be.(通过推荐产品和其他内容,你更有可能按照人工智能系统最初认为适合你的方式去消费、思考和行动,逐渐对你产生很大影响,以至于你变成了它最初认为你应该成为的样子)”可知,不断依赖人工智能推荐系统会让你逐渐变成它所认为的样子,而不是自己主动去选择和发展,这意味着你的身份会受到限制,逐渐“弱化”。
根据文章第四段“This is, however, not a necessary feature of recommendation systems. In principle, they could be designed to broaden the user’s horizon, instead of maximizing involvement by showing customers what they already like.(然而,这并不是推荐系统的必要特征。从理论上讲,它们可以被设计成拓宽用户的视野,而不是通过向客户展示他们已经喜欢的东西来最大化参与度)”可知,推荐系统理论上的设计目的是拓宽用户的视野。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“An AI might state a lot of facts about you, but it is your job to find out what they mean to you and how you let them define you. The same holds for actions. Your actions are not just a way of seeking well-being. Through your actions, you choose what kind of person you are.(人工智能可能会陈述很多关于你的事实,但弄清楚这些事实对你意味着什么以及你如何让它们定义你是你的工作。行动也是如此。你的行动不仅仅是一种追求幸福的方式。通过你的行动,你选择了你想成为什么样的人)”可知,作者强调在人工智能时代,人们要自己去思考人工智能所提供的信息的意义,以及自己要成为什么样的人,而不是完全依赖人工智能。可推理出作者写这篇文章的目的是倡导在人工智能时代进行独立思考。
