阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
Fight climate change while traveling
Whether you’re commuting or vacationing, travel can cause a lot of pollution, for most vehicles are powered by burning gas. As the pie chart illustrates, the transportation sector accounted for a major share of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions in 2022. Tourism also contributes to climate pollution, with transportation making up the majority of tourism-related emissions.
But that doesn’t mean you have to stop traveling for fun altogether. You can make a difference by focusing on greener transportation options and fuel efficiency.
·Use Greener Transportation
Air travel emissions can be reduced by choosing direct flights or taking the train or a bus instead of flying. Even if a bus is gas-powered, it’s better for the climate than a car because it can transport many people with a single engine. If a car is the best option, consider replacing your traditional car with an electric or hybrid vehicle at the end of its life. (And drive the speed limit!). Clean energy helps avoid additional emissions.
·Focus on Efficiency
If available, minimize fuel use, saving money and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Drive smart and improve your fuel economy by going easy on the brakes and gas and keeping your car well-maintained.
Vehicle Selection and Efficiency Strategies

A. Department of Energy. B. EPA’s Energy Star.
C. Department of Transportation. D. Environmental Protection Agency.
3. What is the author’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To discourage people from traveling for fun.
B. To provide ways to reduce travel-related climate pollution.
C. To prove that only electric vehicles can fight climate change.
D. To explain why tourism produces less pollution than commuting.
【答案】1. D 2. A 3. B

B
Henry Stanley is perhaps best known for his expedition into Africa to find Dr. David Livingstone, but that’s not the only rescue mission he undertook. In December 1886, Stanley set off into Africa on what would be his last journey: an attempt to find and bring home a German zoologist named Eduard Schnitzer.
Schnitzer had taken the name “Emin Pasha,” in an attempt to be better received by those he was living among. Pasha was cataloging a host of recently-discovered plant and animal life forms when fighting broke out in the Sudan. Pasha withdrew to Equatoria, at about the same time the Emin Pasha Relief Committee was formed. In addition to the chief goal of bringing Pasha home, Stanley was also under orders from the King of Belgium to open up some new trade routes in the area.
The roundabout route the Committee ended up taking meant that by the time they finally found Pasha many members of the expedition were dead. Those that did survive were worn, ill, and starving by the time they found Pasha who, in comparison, was well-dressed, clean, and — by some accounts — smoking a three-year-old cigar when they finally found him. He was in need of some support and supplies, but he had neither intent nor desire to leave the area. Arguments arose, causing a firm hatred between Stanley and Pasha.
Stanley finally convinced Pasha to leave with the remains of the expedition, setting off on a demanding trip back through Africa. They finally met up with some German explorers, and made it back to the port town of Bagamoyo in 1889.
During the party they threw to celebrate their return to civilization, Pasha fell off a balcony and broke his skull. Stanley returned to Europe to receive commendations and congratulations, while Pasha slowly recovered from his unwanted rescue.
4. Why did Eduard Schnitzer choose the name “Emin Pasha”?
A. To carry out his plant research secretly.
B. To hide his identity as a German zoologist.
C. To gain support from the Relief Committee.
D. To better fit in with local people around him.
5. What is the most ironic (讽刺的) thing about Stanley’s last rescue expedition?
A. Pasha had no willingness to be rescued at all.
B. Stanley failed to develop expected new trade routes.
C. Stanley got badly injured at the welcome celebration.
D. Many expedition members lost their lives on the way.
6. Why does the author mention Pasha’s falling off a balcony?
A. To explain why Pasha refused to leave Africa.
B. To show Pasha’s poor physical and mental state.
C. To create an ironic ending to the whole rescue story.
D. To prove the celebration party was poorly organized.
7. What does “commendations” mean in the last paragraph?
A. Formal criticism. B. Public praise.
C. Sincere apology. D. Careful consideration.
【答案】4. D 5. A 6. C 7. B
根据文章第二段“Schnitzer had taken the name ‘Emin Pasha,’ in an attempt to be better received by those he was living among.(施尼策取名“埃明帕夏”,是为了更好地被身边的人接纳)”可知,他改名是为了更好地融入当地人。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“He was in need of some support and supplies, but he had neither intent nor desire to leave the area.(他需要一些物资支持,但完全没有离开该地区的意愿)”可推知,这次救援最讽刺的是帕夏根本不愿意被救。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第五段“During the party they threw to celebrate their return to civilization, Pasha fell off a balcony and broke his skull.(在庆祝回归文明社会的派对上,帕夏从阳台摔下摔破了头骨)”可推知,作者提及此事是为了给这次救援故事制造一个讽刺的结局。
【7题详解】
词句猜测题。根据文章最后一段“Stanley returned to Europe to receive commendations and congratulations(斯坦利回到欧洲,接受commendations和祝贺)”可推知,划线词“commendations”与and前面的“congratulations”语义相近,意为“公开赞扬”。
C
The U.S. food stamp program was launched at a time when the nation was facing a tragic paradox (矛盾): As millions of Americans suffered from hunger during the Great Depression, the country’s farmers found themselves with a glut (供过于求) of crops and livestock.
This prompted the Federal Surplus Commodities Corporation (FSCC), a New Deal agency to be established in 1933, which purchase excess food and distribute it directly to the needy at little or no cost. This initiative, however, dampened (抑制) business for grocers and food wholesalers, who complained of government interference and unfair competition in the marketplace.
In the morning of May 16, 1939, FSCC officials watched anxiously as they opened their doors to launch the country’s latest relief measure. The first person in line approached a cashier window, a machinist who had been out of work for nearly a year, handed a clerk $4 from his latest unemployment check and received $4 of orange stamps in return as well as $2 of blue stamps for free.
The orange “food stamps” could be exchanged at any of the 1,200 participating Rochester groceries for any goods on the shelves, while blue stamps could only be used to buy surplus agricultural items such as butter, eggs, prunes, flour, oranges, cornmeal and beans. Grocers could exchange the food stamps for money at commercial banks and FSCC offices.
Food stamp recipients approved of the new program, which gave them greater choice in what to eat, beyond just the surplus items being handed out by the government. “Now we’ll get the best in food,” one woman told the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle. “We can take our pick on these surplus commodities instead of taking what they give us.”
Building on the initial success, the food stamp program was rolled out to additional pilot cities and expanded to half the counties in the United States. The program fed 20 million Americans until it was discontinued in 1943 when the economic stimulus provided by World War II eased unemployment and crop surpluses.
8. Which group was the food stamp program designed to support originally?
A. Machinists. B. Government officials.
C. Farmers. D. Food wholesalers.
9. What are Paragraph 1 and 2 mainly about?
A. The origin of FSCC.
B. The cruelty of the war.
C. The definition of food stamps.
D. The background of the food stamp program.
10. Why did the 1939 food stamp program use two different colors of stamps?
A. To limit how much food a family could buy.
B. To make sure people only bought healthy food.
C. To help the government save money on printing.
D. To help people choose food and farmers sell extra goods.
11. According to the woman, what was one good thing about the new stamp program?
A. It gave people more money than before.
B. It provided more surplus food than before.
C. It allowed people to sell the stamps for cash.
D. It gave people more say in what food they could get.
【答案】8. C 9. D 10. D 11. D

根据第一段“As millions of Americans suffered from hunger during the Great Depression, the country’s farmers found themselves with a glut (供过于求) of crops and livestock.”(在大萧条时期,数百万美国人饱受饥饿之苦,而该国的农民却发现自己的农作物和牲畜供过于求)”及第二段“This prompted the Federal Surplus Commodities Corporation (FSCC), a New Deal agency to be established in 1933, which purchase excess food and distribute it directly to the needy at little or no cost.(这促使1933年成立的新政机构 —— 联邦剩余商品公司(FSCC)收购过剩粮食,并以极低价格或免费直接分发给贫困人群)”可知,食品券计划最初设计是为了支持农民处理过剩农产品。
【9题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“The U.S. food stamp program was launched at a time when the nation was facing a tragic paradox (矛盾): As millions of Americans suffered from hunger during the Great Depression, the country’s farmers found themselves with a glut (供过于求) of crops and livestock.(美国食品券计划推出之际,该国正面临一个令人痛心的矛盾:大萧条时期,数百万美国人饱受饥饿之苦,而国内农民却面临农作物和牲畜供过于求的困境)”以及根据第二段“This prompted the Federal Surplus Commodities Corporation (FSCC), a New Deal agency to be established in 1933, which purchase excess food and distribute it directly to the needy at little or no cost. This initiative, however, dampened (抑制) business for grocers and food wholesalers, who complained of government interference and unfair competition in the marketplace.(这促使 1933 年成立的新政机构 —— 联邦剩余商品公司(FSCC)收购过剩粮食,并以极低价格或免费直接分发给贫困人群。然而,这项举措损害了杂货商和食品批发商的生意,他们抱怨政府干预市场,存在不公平竞争)”可知,第一段描述大萧条时期美国民众饥饿与农产品过剩的矛盾,以及第二段讲述为解决此问题成立联邦剩余商品公司(FSCC)及引发杂货店和批发商抱怨等内容可知,这两段主要介绍了食品券计划产生的背景。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“The orange “food stamps” could be exchanged at any of the 1,200 participating Rochester groceries for any goods on the shelves, while blue stamps could only be used to buy surplus agricultural items such as butter, eggs, prunes, flour, oranges, cornmeal and beans.(橙色的“食品券”可以在罗切斯特1200家参与计划的杂货店中的任何一家兑换货架上的任何商品,而蓝色食品券只能用于购买黄油、鸡蛋、李子干、面粉、橙子、玉米粉和豆子等过剩的农产品)”可知,使用两种不同颜色的食品券,既有助于人们选择食物,又能帮助农民销售多余的农产品。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“Food stamp recipients approved of the new program, which gave them greater choice in what to eat, beyond just the surplus items being handed out by the government. “Now we’ll get the best in food,” one woman told the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle. “We can take our pick on these surplus commodities instead of taking what they give us.”(食品券领取者认可这个新计划,它让他们在饮食选择上有了更多的选择,而不仅仅局限于政府发放的过剩食品。一位女士告诉《罗切斯特民主纪事报》:“现在我们能买到最好的食物。我们可以挑选这些过剩的商品,而不是接受他们给我们的东西。”)”可知,这位女士认为新计划的好处是让人们在获取食物方面有了更多的话语权。
D
Pictures of the bird called the red siskin appear on Venezuela’s money, on products and in school books. But the small song bird is disappearing from the wild. It has become the victim of shrinking forests and poachers who want to sell their bright red feathers.
That threat has brought together an international team. The team includes scientists from the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. and coffee farmers in Venezuela’s mountains. They hope to save the bird. The plan is to have farmers plant organic coffee plants. Such coffee plants are covered with branches which make good nesting places for the birds. “They don’t have many years left, unless we do something right now,” said Miguel Arvelo.
Planting organic coffee crops with branches stops farmers from increasing production by thinning their coffee crops to let more sun onto their fields. Farmers who meet the project’s rules will win the right to sell their beans with “Bird Friendly” labels. They will be able to set prices for such “high quality” products that can be five times higher than legal prices set by the socialist government.
At the same time, a red siskin breeding center is being built at a private zoo in Venezuela. There, 200 birds are expected to be born next year. This number will be added to the 25 siskins at the Smithsonian Institution.
Protection under Venezuelan law has not stopped poachers from catching the birds to sell on an illegal international market. Poor Venezuelan families often catch and sell the birds. The money they receive can feed their children for months, said biologist Jhonathan Miranda, a Provita researcher.
Michael Braun is co-founder of the Red Siskin Initiative. He said Venezuela’s economic crisis has hurt the project. Researchers and scientists have been robbed or shot by Venezuela’s growing poor population. It is difficult to get people to work on the project, Braun said. Scientists keep the places where the birds are known to live a secret to protect them from poachers. They permitted the Associated Press to photograph a small number of birds at one of those secret places.
12. What makes the red siskin endangered?
A. Food shortage. B. Climate change.
C. Illegal hunting. D. Environmental pollution.
13. What is the main purpose of involving coffee farmers in the project?
A. To increase coffee production for export.
B. To reduce the price of organic coffee beans.
C. To provide nesting habitats for the red siskin.
D. To compete with the socialist government’s pricing.
14. What is the main function of the red siskin breeding center?
A. To treat sick birds.
B. To train birds for release.
C. To increase the bird population.
D. To replace the Smithsonian’s collection.
15. Why does the author mention that scientists keep the birds’ locations secret?
A. To show the weakness of legal protection.
B. To explain why the breeding center is necessary.
C. To prove that the birds no longer exist in the wild.
D. To suggest that farmers already know the locations.
【答案】12. C 13. C 14. C 15. A
根据第一段中的“It has become the victim of shrinking forests and poachers who want to sell their bright red feathers.(它成为了森林萎缩和想要出售其鲜红羽毛的偷猎者的受害者)”可知,红金翅雀濒临灭绝的原因是栖息地减少和偷猎者的非法捕杀。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“The plan is to have farmers plant organic coffee plants. Such coffee plants are covered with branches which make good nesting places for the birds.(计划是让农民种植有机咖啡植物。这种咖啡植物长满树枝,为鸟类提供了良好的筑巢地)”可知,让咖啡农参与该项目的主要目的是为红金翅雀提供筑巢的栖息地。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中的“At the same time, a red siskin breeding center is being built... There, 200 birds are expected to be born next year.(同时,正在建立一个红金翅雀繁育中心……预计明年那里将有200只鸟出生)”可知,建立繁育中心的主要功能是让更多的鸟类出生,从而增加该鸟类的种群数量。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段首句“Protection under Venezuelan law has not stopped poachers from catching the birds...(委内瑞拉法律的保护并没有阻止偷猎者捕捉鸟类……)”以及最后一段中“Scientists keep the places where the birds are known to live a secret to protect them from poachers.(科学家们对已知鸟类生活的地方保密,以保护它们免受偷猎者的侵害)”可以推断出,正是因为现有的法律保护无法有效阻止偷猎行为,科学家才不得不采取“保密栖息地”的无奈之举。作者以此来凸显法律保护的软弱与不足。

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Dale Tingle, a 54-year-old grandmother from Georgia, received a letter one day. It was written in English, but the writer was not a native speaker. The letter said: “I am 20 years old. I don’t know whether you know me. By now, you have become one of the most important people in my life. Without you I wouldn’t be alive anymore. I had already given up hope. And now I am wondering: what do you tell someone who has saved your life?”
The letter came from a young man named Kevin Kruger, who lived 4,500 miles away in Germany. A few years earlier, Kevin had been diagnosed with leukemia. He was only 19. The treatment was aggressive, and his weight dropped from 176 pounds to 88. His father was dying of brain cancer, and his mother had to care for both him and his two younger sisters. Kevin smiled and told jokes to lift his mother’s spirits, but inside, he was losing hope. Doctors told him his only chance was a stem cell transplant. None of his family members matched. Neither did 3,000 people who tested at two registration events.
Then, a match was found. Halfway across the world, in Georgia, Dale Tingle had registered at a stem cell drive two years earlier, hoping to help a local three-year-old boy. She wasn’t a match for that boy, but she turned out to be a perfect match for Kevin. Without hesitation, she agreed to donate. After the donation, she and her family prayed for the stranger, whom she secretly called “Rocky” — a fighter who never gave up.

【答案】【参考范文】
Now, months later, Kevin’s letter had finally arrived. Dale’s hands trembled as she read his words. Tears blurred her vision, but she smiled through them. “Without you I wouldn’t be alive anymore,” she whispered, reading the line again. She had prayed for this stranger whom she secretly called “Rocky” — a fighter who never gave up. Now, here was his proof of life. Without hesitation, she sat down at her kitchen table and began to write back. “Dear Kevin,” she wrote, “you are not alone. I have been praying for you every day. You don’t need to thank me. Just live. That is the greatest gift you can give me.” She also wrote about her family, the creek behind her house, and her faith. Weeks later, a second letter arrived — this time from Kevin’s mother, who began with the words: “Dear rescuer of my son.”
Years later, Kevin flew to Georgia to meet Dale for the first time. At the Atlanta airport, Dale spotted a tall young man walking toward her. She burst into tears. Kevin wrapped her in a tight hug, and they stood there holding each other for a long moment. “I’ve waited so long for this,” he whispered. During his ten-day visit, Kevin did not ask to see any famous sights. He wanted only to stay with Dale and her family — chatting on the porch, playing in the creek with her grandchildren, and attending church with them. “Without you,” he told her one evening, “I wouldn’t be alive anymore.” Dale hugged him again. “And without you,” she said, “I wouldn’t know how much one person can truly change another’s world. You are my gift, too.”

Selection
Key Feature
Website for information
Energy-efficient vehicle
Higher miles per gallon
Environmental Protection Agency
Electric vehicle
Less greenhouse gas emissions than average new gasoline-powered cars
Department of Energy
Energy-saving electric vehicle charger
Improve efficiency and receive benefits like lower electricity bills.
EPA’s Energy Star
1. According to the passage, what was the third main source of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions in 2022?
A. Tourism-related activities. B. The transportation sector.
C. Residential electricity use. D. Industrial manufacturing.
2. Which website offers information on the emission advantage electric vehicles have over ordinary gasoline cars?
A. Department of Energy. B. EPA’s Energy Star.
C. Department of Transportation. D. Environmental Protection Agency.
3. What is the author’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To discourage people from traveling for fun.
B. To provide ways to reduce travel-related climate pollution.
C. To prove that only electric vehicles can fight climate change.
D. To explain why tourism produces less pollution than commuting.

The U.S. food stamp program was launched at a time when the nation was facing a tragic paradox (矛盾): As millions of Americans suffered from hunger during the Great Depression, the country’s farmers found themselves with a glut (供过于求) of crops and livestock.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
