One evening of June, the girl campers got together for their evening circle. The camp leader encouraged them to share moments from their day that made them feel something—whether joy or sadness.
One camper raised her hand and said, “A girl from another camp called me a fool when I fell during the talent show. I can’t stop thinking about it, and it really hurts me.”
The camp leader said, “Thank you for sharing. Words can be powerful, and they can hurt more than we realize.” Then she went to the bathroom, returning with a tube of toothpaste (一管牙膏).
She pressed the tube a little, and some toothpaste came out. “See? This is what happens when we say something. It comes out easily,” she explained. She then tried to put the toothpaste back into the tube, but it just made a mess. As she pressed the tube even more, more toothpaste came out, creating an even bigger mess.
The leader then told the campers, “Our words are just like this toothpaste. Once they’re out, you can’t take them back. So we should choose our words carefully, and use them to uplift rather than hurt others. You have the power to make someone’s day better or worse with what you say.”

One afternoon, a talking bird named Harpo arrived at a rescue center in Minnesota. Harpo, a very vocal Moluccan cockatoo, began to talk with the sanctuary’s director (鸟兽保护区经理), Galiene Cimperman. After some time, Harpo suddenly said, “I hate this bird.” Harpo likely heard that phrase before, but what did he mean by it? According to Cimperman, Harpo was repeating the words, not using them as language. However, she believes the phrase reflected his past traumas (创伤) and that saying it was part of his healing process.
Many parrots like Harpo live in rescue centers across the US. Although there is research on parrots’ memory and problem-solving, their emotions are mostly unexplored. This makes understanding the relationship between parrots and people challenging. Parrots’ intelligence, social nature, and physical needs often make it difficult for them to thrive in captivity (囚禁). Yet, more than 50 million parrots live in homes and zoos worldwide. Many end up in rescue centers, where volunteers like Cimperman must learn about their past to help them find comfort.
There is even less research on whether parrots can experience psychological trauma. However, they have the cognitive abilities necessary to experience long-term trauma. One of the few scientific papers on parrots’ trauma came from a collaboration (合作) between the rescue center and psychologist Gay Bradshaw. The paper describes how parrots at the sanctuary often meet the criteria for PTSD (创伤后应激障碍)。
Parrots in captivity often face distressing experiences from birth. They may be raised in isolation and receive little attention. Parrots are social animals, but as pets, they often have limited contact with humans or other birds. Even kind-hearted owners may struggle to care for them properly. Some parrots face abuse (虐待) and cannot escape stressful situations.
At rescue centers, it is essential for parrots to feel in control of their lives. Volunteers help them build trust and allow them to make choices, similar to how they would in the wild. Healing from trauma may take months or even years.
By the end of Harpo’s life in 2021, he had become a friendly and joyful bird, no longer saying “I hate this bird.” The possibility that parrots experience emotions similar to humans highlights the need to protect them in captivity and the wild.
28. What can be inferred about the life of parrots in captivity based on Harpo’s experience?
A. They can learn to communicate effectively with humans.
B. They often experience significant emotional trauma.
C. They do not have the ability to remember past experiences.
D. They can easily adapt to their new environment.
29. What is a big challenge in understanding the relationship between parrots and people?
A. The lack of research on parrots’ emotions.
B. The lack of interest in studying parrots.
C. Parrots’ inability to communicate with humans.
D. Parrots’ tendency to repeat uncomprehended phrases without understanding them.
30. What is one of the strategies rescue centers use to help parrots heal from trauma?
A. They provide them with a new owner.
B. They give them control over their lives.
C. They teach them new phrases to practice.
D. They allow them to interact with other animals.
31. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. The challenges of keeping parrots in captivity
B. A closer look at parrot rescue centers in the US
C. The life and times of Harpo: A case study on a talking bird
D. Parrots are intelligent, but do we understand their emotions?
【答案】28. B 29. A 30. B 31. D
