Experiment (实验)
Tea Bag Hot-Air Balloon
Level of difficulty: easy
Time:10 minutes
How does a hot-air balloon work? How does it fly in the air? Learn about air density (密度) by making your own tea bag hot-air balloon.
Materials
●teabag ●scissors ●cup ●plate ●matches
The Steps
1. Use scissors to cut open one side of the tea bag. Pour the tea leaves out of the bag into a cup.
2. Shape the tea bag into a cylinder (圆柱体) and stand it up on a plate.
3. Use a match to light the top of the tea bag.
The Hows and Whys
When air is heated, the air molecules (分子) move around quickly and spread out. This makes hot air rise because it is lighter than cold air. When the tea bag is lit, it heats up the air inside and around it. Then the hot air lifts up the light tea bag. A hot-air balloon works the same way. Heating up the air inside the balloon can make it fly above the ground.
1. Why do we need a plate?
A. To place the matches on it. B. To pour the tea leaves into it.
C. To use it to hold a cup of tea. D. To let the tea bag stand up on it.
2. Which of the following is used in the third step?
A. B. C. D.
3. What lifts the tea bag?
A. The plate that is under the tea bag. B. The scissors that cut open the tea bag.
C. The hot air that is lighter than cold air. D. The match that is used to light the tea bag.
4. If Jim wants to do the experiment, what advice will you give him according to the text?
A. Do it with the help of his parents. B. Be careful when pouring tea leaves.
C. Prepare as many matches as possible. D. Wash the cup and plate before starting.
5. Where can we probably read the text?
A. In a city guidebook. B. In a science magazine.

D 2. C 3. C 4. A 5. B
根据实验步骤第2步“Shape the tea bag into a cylinder (圆柱体) and stand it up on a plate.”
根据实验步骤第3步“Use a match to light the top of the tea bag.”
根据“The Hows and Whys”部分的“This makes hot air rise because it is lighter than cold air. When the tea bag is lit, it heats up the air inside and around it. Then the hot air lifts up the light tea bag.”
根据“Attention”部分的“Be very careful with fire and matches. Ask an adult for help when you use them.”

The bell rang and the students of Class Three took their seats. It looked like an ordinary Monday morning, but Miss Lema had planned something special.
She came in carrying a large cardboard box. “Good morning, everyone! Today we will do something different.” She put the box on her desk and handed out white masks (面具) and colorful markers.
“Draw something on the outside of your mask to show how you want others to see you,” she said. “On the inside, write one thing about yourself that most people don’t know.”
At first some students laughed. They showed their masks to friends and made jokes. After a few minutes, the room went quiet. The task made everyone think.
Emma, who was always cheerful, drew a blue sky with white clouds and a yellow sun. Inside she wrote, “Sometimes I’m afraid that if I’m not funny, people won’t like me.”
Jack, a quiet boy, painted calm blue waves. Inside he wrote, “I miss my dad a lot. I don’t talk about it.”
When everyone finished, Miss Lema asked them to pass the masks around. Each student opened one and read the secret inside. The class was silent for a while.
“I didn’t know you felt that way,” Jenna said to Emma.
Bruce looked at Jack and said quietly, “You’re not alone. I’ve felt that way too.”
Miss Lema looked around and said, “We all wear masks sometimes. We hide our true feelings because we are afraid people will not understand. But when we share our true feelings, we grow closer. That is where kindness begins.”
Hearing this, the students looked at one another with new understanding. Many even gave the friends next to them a big hug.
After that day, Class Three was never quite the same as before. The students spoke more kindly, listened more patiently, and smiled more. It wasn’t the kind of lesson they expected —— but it was one they would remember for a lifetime.

C
We often help others out of care or kindness. But is help always a good thing? In fact, sometimes the help children give to their classmates can be harmful.
If your classmates ask you for help with a math problem, how will you help them? You could teach them how to solve it. This is called indirect help, which allows your classmates to learn to work out the answer on their own. Maybe next time they won’t need your help because they already know how to solve it. But you could also give the correct answer directly. This is called direct help. But it takes away their chance to learn. They’ll still need help with similar tasks later.
In most cases, indirect help is better because it helps others learn more in the long run. As the old saying goes, “Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”
We did research to see whether children offered more indirect or direct help to their classmates. In the research, the children acted as math masters and could choose either kind of help when their classmates solved math problems. They were told about two classmates’ past performance: one answered many math questions correctly, while the other made many mistakes. This way, we could test if children gave different kinds of help when they thought others were good at something or struggled(吃力地做) with it. The results from the bar chart(柱状图) showed that when children thought their classmates were struggling, ▲.This can widen the ability gap(差距) between students and hurt the confidence of those who get more direct help. So next time you offer help, please remember to choose the right kind.
11. What is direct help according to the text?
A. Teaching others to solve the problem on their own.
B. Offering a useful method to help others avoid problems.
C. Giving the correct answer directly to help those in need.
D. Refusing to help others to let them learn by themselves.
12. Why is indirect help better than direct help in most cases?
A. It can make tasks much easier for people in need.
B. It can stop others from making mistakes in their studies.
C. It can save a lot of time for both helpers and those in need.
D. It can help others learn more and become better in the long run.
13. What is the meaning of the underlined sentence in the text?
14. According to the bar chart, which of the following can be put in“▲”?
A. they’ll be unsure how to help them
B. the possibility of giving direct help increases
C. they will give neither direct nor indirect help
D. the possibility of giving indirect help increases
15. What is the writer’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To show the importance of working hard at school.
B. To tell readers to choose proper ways to help others.
C. To introduce how to do research on students’ studies.
D. To ask students to give more help to their classmates.
C 12. D 13. A 14. B 15. B
根据原文第二段“But you could also give the correct answer directly. This is called direct help.”

Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.

A
Experiment (实验)
