At about noon one weekday in Maizidian, a busy business area in Beijing, office workers come in and out of a convenience (便利) store just as usual. Nearly all carry packaged (包装的) meals and drinks.
The store sells 800 to 1000 packaged meals, usually including rice and some smaller dishes, at lunchtime every workday. About 80% of the buyers are white-collar workers. Reasonable prices, convenience and quality of ready-to-eat meals have changed convenience stores into “kitchens” for many city workers.
Zhang Hui, 32, an office worker in Shanghai, goes to these stores for most of her meals. She spends less than 10 yuan on breakfast and about 20 yuan on packaged meals for lunch and dinner each day. “When I’m busy, or when I have to eat alone, I will choose ready to eat foods in convenience stores, which are fast and make buying easy. This also saves me from feeling uncomfortable about eating alone in a restaurant,” Zhang said. “And, the taste of such foods is acceptable.”
China has about 122,000 convenience stores, mainly in first-tier and second-tier cities (一线和二线城市). With the changes of modern society, people seem to have faster lives. Most of them now don’t have as much time to cook as before. With more disposable income (可支配收入), people are more willing to spend on convenience. And now they are paying more attention to the environment and food safety. Ready-to-eat foods in convenience stores can meet these needs, mainly for a large number of young single people.
( ) 29. What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Zhang Hui’s self-cooking at home.
B. Zhang Hui’s eating alone in a restaurant.
C. Zhang Hui’s choice of ready-to-eat foods.
D. Zhang Hui’s hurry to work without meals.
( ) 30. From Paragraph 3, we can know ________.
A. Zhang Hui doesn’t know how to cook
B. Zhang Hui often eats alone in a restaurant
C. Zhang Hui thinks buying ready-to-eat foods is a good choice
D.Zhang Hui thinks ready-to-eat foods taste good
( ) 31. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. What convenience stores sell.
B. How people like convenience stores.
C. Why convenience stores are popular.
D. Where people can find convenience stores.

Do you speak a dialect (方言) in daily life? While many Chinese people speak Mandarin (普通话), some local dialects are in danger of disappearing. To save them, the Chinese government started the Chinese Language Resources Protection Project (中国语言资源保护工程) a few years ago.
This project looks at how people talk in 1,712 places, including 103 dialects that are almost gone. It has helped China to build the world’s largest language resource library. There’s an online library where people can learn dialects from over 5.6 million audio clips (音频) and over 5 million videos.
Why is protecting the dialect culture important? According to British linguist Harold Palmer, dialects are a key to store local cultures. “Language truly shows the history and the beliefs of an area.” he said.
Scholar Zhang Hongming shared his worries about the disappearing of dialects.“For about over 10 years, in the Wu dialect areas such as Shanghai and Suzhou, children aged 6 to 15 can understand but hardly speak it. What’s more, young people over 15 years old sometimes speak it, but not very well. If this keeps happening, the dialect might disappear.” he said.
So how did China build this big library? “A big national effort (努力) has been put into the project to make it happen.” said Cao Zhiyun, the top expert on the project. Over five years, more than 350 universities and research groups joined in, along with over 4,500 experts and more than 6,000 dialect speakers.
The project is now entering into its second part. This includes creating digital (数字化的) tools like apps and mobile dictionaries to help people learn dialects.
( ) 32. Why are dialects important according to Harold Palmer in paragraph 3?
A. Because they are easy to learn.
B. Because they can be used in daily life.
C. Because they store local cultures.
D. Because they are a symbol of a country.
( ) 33. What does the underlined word "it" in paragraph 5 refer to?
A. Building the big library.
B. Joining in universities and research groups.
C. Putting into a national effort.
D. Getting help from the top expert.
( ) 34. What does the second part of the project mainly focus on?
A. Collecting more dialects.
B. Building more online libraries.
C. Teaching people how to speak Mandarin.
D. Creating digital tools to help people learn dialects.
( ) 35. What is the best title for the passage?
A. A Language Competition
B. Digital Tools in Language Learning
C. China's Efforts on Saving Dialects
D. China's New Technology to Record Dialects

Dear Amy,
I’m glad to tell you about the changes in my hometown and my free time.
In the past, our houses were small and old. The roads were dirty and narrow, and pollution was serious. We traveled by bike or bus and kept in touch mainly by letters. Now we’ve moved into new apartments. The environment is much better with more parks. The subway and Internet make our life more convenient.
In my free time, I spend about 6 hours a week reading books from the library. Reading helps me gain knowledge and open my eyes. I also love traveling to taste delicious food and experience different cultures. I plan to visit Shanghai Disneyland this May Day.
I’m proud of our new life and look forward to your visit.
