表示持续时间的关键词:(1)for + 一段时间 (for two years, for a long time);(2)since + 过去的时间点 (since 2013, since last year, since he started working)
用法区别:
for 侧重于动作持续的“长度”。
e.g. He has taught here for five years. (他在这里教书五年了。)
since 侧重于动作开始的“时间点”。
e.g. He has taught here since 2019. (他从2019年起就在这里教书。)
注意: 这种用法通常与延续性动词连用(如:be, have, live, work, study, know 等),不能与非延续性动词(如:buy, die, join, leave 等)直接连用(除非进行句型转换,如把 join 改为 be a member of)。

Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to apply for the "Caring for the Elderly" volunteer project. I believe that helping others is one of the most meaningful things we can do.
I have always been interested in volunteer work. I think it is our duty to care for the elderly because we will all be old one day. I have many skills that I can share with them. For example, I can play Chinese chess, and I can also teach them how to use mobile phones.
I have been a volunteer at an animal shelter for two years, so I am very patient and responsible. I would love to bring joy to the elderly and learn from their life stories.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

I always wonder how much I can do for others. When I worked as a volunteer, I understood the power of serving people.
When I volunteered in Mexico, I met a little girl. When I checked on someone’s teeth with Dr. Sussi, I saw her holding a toy, talking and laughing with her friend. Dr. Sussi told me, “When she was 3 years old, her house was on fire. She was found and immediately sent to the hospital. Luckily, she was saved but some scars (疤痕) were left on her body.”
I was startled that a little girl went through so much. I walked closer and saw her scars. To be honest, I was a little afraid to look at her. But her eyes were so innocent (纯真) that she made me feel she was a pretty girl.
Dr. Sussi told me that her mom took her to the clinic (诊所) to play with the volunteers there every weekend. It is probably the only place that she can be treated the same as other kids. Perhaps we can play with her and encourage her. She might not remember the time she spent with us in the clinic when she grew up. But I believe the feeling of being loved by strangers can stay with her forever.

60.What does the writer want to tell us?
A.To show us how to be a volunteer. B.To show us what a volunteer should do.
C.To show us the meaning of helping others D.To show us how to deal with unusual children.
C
The meaning of the word “volunteer” may be a little different in different countries, but it usually means “one who offers his or her services.” There are many different ways in which people can volunteer, such as taking care of sick people, working in homes for homeless children, and picking up garbage (垃圾) from beaches and parks. Volunteers may work within their own countries or in other countries. They are often people with a strong wish to help those who are less fortunate than themselves. Volunteers don’t expect any kind of pay.
At the root of volunteering is the idea that one person may have the ability to offer services that can help other people. Tracy, a good friend of mine, however, recently came back from India with a new idea of what being a volunteer means. She worked for two and a half weeks in one of Mother Teresa’s homes in Calcutta (加尔各答). The following is her story.
“I first heard about Mother Teresa in my high school, we watched a video (录像) about her work in India and all over the world. I was so moved by her spirit to help others and her endless love for every human being that after I graduated from high school, I too wanted to try her kind of work. So with two friends I flew to Calcutta for a few weeks.”
“I was asked to work in a home for sick people. I helped wash clothes and sheets, and pass out lunch. I also fed the people who were too weak to feed themselves and tried to cheer them up. I felt it was better to share with them than to think that I have helped them. To be honest, I don’t think I was helping very much. It was then that I realized that I had not really come to help, but to learn about and experience another culture that helped improve my own understanding of life and the world.”

One morning, Patricia was taking a walk on the busy road Estrella Parkway near her home. A car suddenly appeared and rushed past her. Luckily, she was not hurt, but the car came “very, very close,” Patricia said.
Patricia and her grandson, William, often walk together on Estrella Parkway. However, there were lots of cars racing on that road. When William went to visit Patricia that evening, she told him what happened. After William heard Patricia was nearly hit by a car, he thought it was time to do something to fix that.
In January 2024, William decided to go to the city council (市议会) hall. The council meetings are open to the public. When it was his turn to speak, William stood up and spoke about the problem of car racing on Estrella Parkway. “It’s very dangerous,” he said, “I wonder if you have any way to solve it.”
In fact, the local government already planned to install (安装) traffic lights on Estrella Parkway. After William gave the speech at the meeting, it brought more attention to the need for safer roads. About six months after the council meeting, a new traffic light was put up and began working.
Stories about William’s efforts also appeared on the local news and national TV. People were all encouraged by his speech. William also received a city award for his efforts to improve the local community. “After that happened, I felt like I could do anything.” William said. “I’m not sure what community problems to solve next,” he added, “I’ll keep exploring.”
For now, William is happy with the changes on Estrella Parkway. “You don’t see cars racing each other to the end of the road and it feels much safer,” he said.

People usually think volunteering is just for adults. It seems hard for students like us. But it is completely different in Canada. The government encourages (鼓励) people of any age to volunteer and make contributions (贡献) to the whole society. So, if students want to graduate (毕业) from high school, 30 hours of volunteering is needed. If students want to get into a good university, it helps if they contribute a lot to society. Volunteering is an important point that universities will think about.
Besides, there are volunteer chances everywhere. People can find information about how to volunteer posted in the library or on the Internet. It includes many different jobs, such as wrapping (包装) gifts in a shopping mall, taking care of small kids or cleaning up a church. Students can choose what they want to do and register online.
I got my first volunteer job at New Westminster Museum every Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. My job is to check the documents (文件) on a computer and correct mistakes. The museum is about the historically important family in New Westminster. At first, I was nervous to communicate with others. But as time passed, I became more open. During the volunteering, I not only learned how to work with other volunteers but also learned a lot of history about New Westminster.
As a volunteer, I am proud of myself. I enjoy doing my job and helping others.

On April 20th, he and many volunteers from Project 3R, the nonprofit (非营利机构) he created, started a five-week campaign at five beaches along the Southern California coast and some in Mexico to remove trash (清除垃圾).
“The trash ends up in the ocean, and animals are eating it,” Hickman told The Orange County Register. “Picking up a piece of trash may save a turtle’s life.”
In 2012, Ryan Hickman started to pick up the trash around the beaches. Ever since then, he and some volunteers have collected about 2 million bottles and cans (金属罐) from beaches, lakes and rivers.
From a young age, Hickman had developed a love for recycling and had always liked trash trucks. He put the two interests together and began collecting recyclables (可回收物) to raise money. In 2017, Hickman gave away a $10, 000 (about 72,000 yuan) check to the PMMC after picking up 50, 000 pounds of trash and more than 200, 000 recyclable bottles.
Along with organizing volunteer cleanups, Hickman has also traveled worldwide, speaking to kids about caring for the planet and oceans. At the Ocean Institute in California, he started a program where primary school students clean local beaches and then board (登船) the institute’s teaching ship to learn about pollution’s influence.
“It’s fun,”he said.“The people I talk to may encourage them, and they might organize a cleanup, too.”

Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

At just 14 years old, Ryan Hickman from San Juan Hills High School, US, has made waves (引起轰动) with a beach clean-up campaign (运动).
