“I didn’t do it,” he cried.
“Who accused (控告) you?” shouted a voice.
“Is that your knife?” asked the Sheriff, holding it out.
Potter saw Indian Joe. He said, “Tell them, Joe.”
Huckleberry and Tom said nothing while Indian Joe lied in front of everyone. He then helped to lift the body of the murdered man and put it in a wagon.
But Tom soon forgot his secret troubles because something new interested him. Becky wasn’t coming to school because she was ill. Tom didn’t play games with his friends and forgot his toys.
At school Tom waited at the gate of the playground instead. He watched carefully, hoping whenever a girl came into sight that it was Becky. ________ He came running and shouting round, broke through a group of boys, sending them falling in every direction. Then he fell himself right in front of Becky, almost knocking her over. She turned, with her nose in the air, and he heard her say:

C
When I was a child I was often told what not to eat. “You don’t want to get fat” was always repeated throughout my childhood. It really messed up my relationship with food—something that took me years to overcome. Because of this, I’m careful not to connect my kids’ weight with their value. I encourage my daughter to make healthy snack choices and often stop her from a second dessert. But one day when I heard her saying “I think I’m too fat,” my heart sank. It made me wonder if giving her advice on snacks was having a bad influence.
According to Charlotte Markey, a professor of psychology, food is one of the rare subjects where, as parents, saying less is more. “There are so many things in parenting that are good to talk through, but I don’t think that food is one of them,” she says. “It just makes kids worry and feel unsafe.”
Instead, she suggests a well-known idea among nutrition experts called the “Division of Responsibility,” where parents provide different kinds of mostly healthy foods to their kids at fixed times, and the kids themselves decide what and how much they want to eat—even if that means sometimes eating more cookies than carrots.
Allowing kids to eat what they want also shows them to the natural results of their decisions. “When your child says, ‘My stomach hurts,’ you can say, ‘Well you had a lot of sweet foods and you might feel better if you made some other choices,’” says Markey. “Let them feel like they have some control over it.”
I’ve been trying out these methods and I’ve found that when I’m less strict, they do make better decisions. “Feeding is a long game,” says Markey. “The food you have available makes a big difference. Even if they don’t eat it, they’re seeing it. And then all of a sudden it works.”
38. What can we learn about the writer from the first paragraph?
A. She enjoys cooking healthy food.
B. She is satisfied with her kids’ weight.
C. She is very careful about what she eats.
D. She doesn’t like the way she was fed as a child.
39. Which of the following would Markey disagree with?
A. Being less strict on the food kids eat.
B. Telling kids the risks of eating snacks.
C. Allowing kids to eat cookies sometimes.
D. Giving kids different foods at fixed times.
40. According to the “Division of Responsibility,” what should kids do?
A. Eat more cookies than carrots.
B. Help their parents to wash the dishes.
C. Eat up healthy foods their parents give them.
D. Decide by themselves what and how much to eat.
41. What does the writer think of the ways she has been trying?
A. They work well on her kids. B. They cost a lot.
C. They help kids lose weight. D. They are unhealthy.
【答案】38. D 39. B 40. D 41. A

【39题详解】
文中第二段提到Markey的观点:“food is one of the rare subjects where, as parents, saying less is more”“It just makes kids worry and feel unsafe.”,说明她不赞成过多说教,因此会不同意“告诉孩子吃零食的风险”这种做法。
【40题详解】
文中第三段解释了“Division of Responsibility”:“parents provide different kinds of mostly healthy foods... and the kids themselves decide what and how much they want to eat”,说明孩子的责任是自己决定吃什么、吃多少。
【41题详解】
文中最后一段提到“I’ve been trying out these methods and I’ve found that when I’m less strict, they do make better decisions.”,说明作者认为这些方法对孩子很有效。

Many industries produce a lot of wastewater that contains both organic substances (有机物) and inorganic salts. If the wastewater is put directly into the environment, it can harm animals, plants, and people. However, the high salt content in the wastewater brings serious challenge for common treatment processes. Researchers from Rice University and Guangdong University of Technology have found a new way to solve this problem. They use a method called dialysis (透析), which is commonly used in medicine.
The researchers chose commercial ultrafiltration membranes (超滤膜) which were designed to let salt pass through while trapping organic substances. They set up a system where salty wastewater and fresh water flowed in opposite directions on either side of a special membrane, without needing pumps. Because of the difference of salt concentrations (浓度) between wastewater and fresh water, salt naturally moves into the fresh water while organic substances are kept back. To test this, they compared the amount of organic material and salt in the wastewater before and after treatment. The results showed the system could take away salt without using extra fresh water.
One important advantage of dialysis is its ability to avoid fouling (积垢). It needs less energy and less cleaning than other methods. Also, by choosing suitable membranes, researchers can separate different kinds of organic substances and even recover useful materials from the wastewater. This turns wastewater treatment factories into “resource recovery factories,” which is good for recycling.
Dialysis alone cannot make the water completely clean. But it can turn high-salt wastewater into low-salt wastewater, which is much easier to treat with traditional methods. This new method is a big step forward for treating difficult industrial wastewater.
42. What is the main difficulty in treating the wastewater mentioned in the passage?
A. There is not enough equipment. B. The water contains too much salt.
C. There is a great deal of wastewater. D. The treatment costs so much money.
43. How does the dialysis process take away salt from wastewater?
A. The membrane turns salt into organic substances.
B. Extra pressure pushes the salt through the membrane.
C. Both sides of the membrane use the same flowing direction.
D. The salt moves naturally from the wastewater to the fresh water.
44. What does the underlined word “This” in paragraph 3 refer to (指的是)?
A. Using dialysis. B. Making fouling.
C. Inventing membranes. D. Changing salt concentrations.
45. What is the best title for this passage?
A. Wastewater: A Challenge for Researchers.
B. Membranes: Protecting Fresh Water from Salt.
C. Dialysis: A New Helper for Cleaning Wastewater.
D. High-Salt Wastewater: A Big Danger to the World.

The new school year is coming. Who will be your new classmates? Will you sit alone or in pairs? In fact, there are many different classroom seating arrangements (排列). Let’s take a look at some of them.
Common Seating
Students sit alone in rows. This seating arrangement helps students listen to the teacher carefully. But it is not convenient for students to have discussions in class.
Paired Seating
Two desks are put together. Students sit side by side. Sitting in pairs allows students to discuss and cooperate (合作) with their deskmates. However, some students can’t focus on their lessons because they may chat with their deskmates.
Group Seating
Students sit in small groups, facing each other. This arrangement is great for either large classes or small classrooms. It is good for group discussions and cooperation. But there is a problem: When students are doing group work, some of them may sit back and leave others to find a way out.
U-Shape Seating
Desks are placed in a U-shape. This kind of seating creates an open space in the middle. The teacher has enough space to move around. However, it takes up more classroom space.
Every coin has two sides. Every seating arrangement has its own advantages and disadvantages.

You may know the saying “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” It means you shouldn’t judge the worth or value of something by its a____61____ alone.

I wanted color rather than black and white, though. I was very happy with the result. But later, I realized s____66____ was missing. I liked the blue sky, the flowers on the trees and the color of the font, but the feel just didn’t scream, “Pick me up!”
So I asked a____67____ designer to do it again. I remember telling her that I liked the design, but something was off. Her new design was s____68____. The almond trees, the blue sky and flowers were still t____69____. But the colors and fonts were better. It was nothing I could have described, but the new cover was a success. It was even chosen as a finalist in a cover design competition!

But the saying doesn’t tell the whole story. I agree that you shouldn’t judge a book only by its cover. But please don’t miss the cover either. The cover is the f____62____ thing you see. Everything on the cover, front and back, is purposefully designed to make you want to buy and read the book. The cover is only part of the book, but it’s an important p____63____. The cover tells you the title and the writer’s name. Sometimes that’s enough to make you pick it up. On the b____64____, you can find a short summary (总结) of the story, and maybe some reviews. The picture, colors, and fonts (字体) also give you an idea of what the book is about.
As a writer, I know how important a good cover is. Several years ago, I p____65____ a book called “Under the Almond Trees”. I asked a cover designer to use an old photo as the model for the cover.
So whether you are t____70____ to judge a book by its cover or not, I know such judging happens. Readers decide whether to pick up a book or not based on the cover information. As a result, it’s important to remember that the cover matters.
