Pork dishes: A taste of two cultures
Growing up in northern England, I often helped my grandmother prepare golden sausage rolls for weekend tea. The sweet smell filled the room as she taught me to put pork meat in thin dough. Last summer in Guangzhou, I saw students making baozi stuffed with pork with their families. 31 , although separated by thousands of miles, both our cultures share a special connection through pork dishes.
Pork plays an important role in daily life. British office workers buy hot pork pies during lunch, while Chinese neighbors 32 homemade char siu (叉烧) with each other as gifts. At school, English children enjoy sausage rolls, while Chinese students share baozi during breaks— 33 shapes, the same warmth.
Street food shows the creativity of cooking pork. At London’s Borough Market, crispy pork pies with jelly fillings chuanr have been sold for 200 years. Meanwhile, Guangzhou night markets sizzle with chuanr (烤肉串), pork with cumin and chili. A man told me, “One stick costs 5 yuan, but the joy is 34 .”
Pork plays a 35 role in celebrations in both cultures. Roasted pork is often the star of Sunday roasts and Christmas dinners in England. At a Spring Festival dinner in China, hongshaorou takes center stage as the layered meat shows life’s balance.
People like pork also because of its 36 value. British teens eat grilled pork chop for protein, while Chinese parents make pork bone soup for children during exams, saying that it helps 37 attention.
Our tastes may be a little different. British people use herbs (香草) like rosemary, but Chinese recipes often include soy sauce, ginger and star anise. Yet grandmothers in both countries agree: love is the best flavoring and happy 38 tell the story.
From London to Guangzhou, pork 39 cultures through shared joy. Whether it’s through sausage rolls or baozi, pork symbolizes comfort, celebration and connection. So next time you enjoy pork, remember: somewhere, another family is 40 the same happiness, bite by bite.

四、阅读理解
A
Hand gestures mean different things in different countries. Some gestures may even get you into trouble if you don’t know them well. Here is some basic and useful information.
People in most countries such as Canada and China use a thumb-up (翘拇指) to show agreement. But it can be unfriendly in some countries and shouldn’t be used in other countries like Thailand.
What does making a circle with your thumb and index finger (食指) mean? In many countries, it means “fine” or “okay”. But that is not the only meaning. It also means “zero” in Australia and “money” in Japan.
Don’t ask someone to come over by reaching out your index finger. It may mean “Come here.” in a friendly way in China, or “Come here if you want a fight!” in a super rude way in Malaysia. That can get you into trouble!
A “V” shape with your fingers usually shows happiness and success. But make sure you have the back of your hand towards yourself, or it becomes impolite. In some English-speaking countries, it can even cause a fight!
41.Why does the author write this passage?
A.To explain the reasons for using hand gestures.
B.To study the importance of using body language.
C.To solve social problems caused by hand gestures.
D.To introduce gestures with different cultural meanings.
42.Which of the following picture shows the second gesture?
A. B. C. D.
43.Which hand gestures can make people angry if they are used incorrectly?
A.①②③ B.①③④ C.②③④ D.①②④
B
From checking social media every minute to being lost in computer games, we usually overuse technology. “For many people, a moment without your phone or computer in sight can feel like a lifetime.” the Daily Mail commented.
A computer model called Mindy may make many people think twice. A team from a US company built a three-dimensional (3D) model to show the negative effects technology can have on human bodies in less than 800 years.
“Spending hours looking down at your phone tires your neck and throws your backbone off balance.” explained Caleb Backe, a health and wellness expert (专家) in the US. This, in turn, will make it more difficult for the muscles in our neck to support the head, making our back hunched and our neck wide.
“The way we hold our phones can cause pain in certain muscles of your hands.” Nikola Djordjevic, a doctor in Serbia, told the team. It affects the elbows too, making your arm hurt a lot. Scientifically, it is called cubital tunnel syndrome (肘管综合征). That’s why Mindy has a 90-degree elbow, and her hands look like she’s always holding a mobile phone.
Some people also commented that human evolution (进化) may not work this way. They believe that only good changes would be kept over the years. For example, changes that can enable people to live longer, instead of the negative effect of technology.
However, human lifestyles nowadays still cause worries. A model called Emma was built by researchers in the UK in 2019 to show how the way people work at their desks could change them in 20 years.
The research team built Emma based on the health problems mentioned by over 3,000 workers in France, Germany and the UK. Emma’s back stays bent, and her legs are swollen because of the time people spend in front of computers. With little time spent outdoors in the sun, her skin is pale, too.
While Mindy and Emma are just predictions about what may happen in the future, they remind us to think more about tech habits. Experts suggest taking breaks, stretching muscles, and balancing screen time with outdoor activities. After all, evolution is kind to those who get used to changes wisely—not those controlled by devices like phones and computers.
44.What does the underlined word “negative” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Useful. B.Harmful. C.Amazing. D.Hopeless.
45.Why did the researchers create “Mindy” and “Emma”?
A.To introduce future technology.
B.To sell new types of models to doctors.
C.To show possible effects of overusing technology.
D.To explain how technology improves human health.
46.How does the article support its opinion about technology’s effects?
A.By telling stories about future humans.
B.By explaining how human evolution works.
C.By comparing traditional and modern lifestyles.
D.By showing experts’ opinions and research models.
47.Which of the following may the writer agree with?
A.Working outdoors is important. B.More models should be created.
C.Technology will make humans healthier. D.Using technology wisely helps us live better.

Maybe sometimes you’re always getting into trouble with your classmates, your friends or even your teacher and no matter what you do, you just can’t get things right. The best thing to do is to stop trouble before it starts. 48
Firstly, if you say something bad about other people, it will certainly reach them in the end. They will surely get angry. 49 You should say something positive (积极的) about people if you want to stay out of trouble.
Secondly, don’t try to reason with unreasonable (不讲道理的) people. 50 So keep away from unreasonable people, and you’ll be much more likely to stay out of trouble.
Thirdly, 51 If someone is trying to drive you mad or call your names, learn to take deep breaths, walk away and keep you calm. Remember yourself that it may feel good to fight (战斗,打架) with those who drive you mad for a few seconds, but in the long term, it’ll only do you harm.
Finally, take good care of yourself. You may not think that getting enough rest, eating three meals and getting some exercise have anything to do with staying out of trouble, but you’re wrong. Taking care of your body means you’re taking care of your mind, and if your body and mind are in good shape, you’re less likely to get into trouble. 52
A.Explaining (解释) something to people who don’t want to listen is a waste of time and energy.
B.Working hard is important to everyone.
C.Here are some things you can do to stay out of trouble.
D.Also, if you’re paying attention to your own health, then you won’t have time to cause trouble.

A sunshine teenager
Each of us should try to be a sunshine teenager. But what is a sunshine teenager like? Now I will introduce one to you.
He is my best friend Daniel. He is confident and always full of hope for the future. He is ready to take on new challenges any time. He is also kind and helpful. He cares more about others. He will help us if something difficult worries us. Daniel always works to high standards and gets high marks in exams, but he is modest and easy to work with.
Daniel takes an active part in different kinds of voluntary work. He has devoted most of his free time to it, such as helping with doing a bird count in Bird Watching Society, collecting books and clothes for children in poor areas, planting trees at weekends. He wants to do his best to make our earth a better place.
Daniel is a good example to me. I have learned a lot from him.
