The famous and mysterious Winged Lion of Venice statue has stood on top of a column in Venice's well-known St. Mark's Square for more than 700 years. The ancient 3,000-kilogram bronze lion was long believed to have been made in the "Near East" around the year 300 B.C.E.

I was a boy who always cared too much about others’ opinions. Afraid of being laughed at, I never dared to show my real thoughts and always hid myself behind quietness. I feared conflicts and tried to please everyone around me, which finally made me tired and confused.
One Friday afternoon, our teacher announced a class speech competition with the theme of “Make a Difference with Small Kindness”. Most of my classmates were excited and raised their hands immediately. I was actually eager to join in, for I had witnessed many warm little deeds in my class. However, the fear of failure and public judgment held me back. I lowered my head and pretended to be indifferent.
Seeing my reaction, my head teacher Ms. Wang came over after class. She did not blame me. Instead, she gently told me, “True growth lies in bravely showing yourself and daring to try. Don’t let shyness stop you from shining.” Her words touched me deeply. That night, I thought a lot and finally made up my mind to sign up for the competition.
I spent the whole weekend preparing for my speech carefully. I collected small warm stories of my classmates: someone always helped others with study problems, someone volunteered to clean the classroom silently, and someone always cheered up disappointed classmates. I practiced my lines again and again in front of the mirror, trying to overcome my nervousness.
