When you make a mistake or say something wrong, it’s easy to be hard on yourself. With self-compassion (自我同情), you can be a friend to yourself instead.
What is self-compassion?
Compassion is when you see someone suffering and want to help. Self-compassion is giving yourself that care and kindness. Sometimes being kind to yourself can help when you mess up or when you’re struggling to do something new. Dr Kristin Neff, author of several books on the subject, lists three elements of self-compassion: being kind to yourself, understanding that everyone struggles sometimes and noticing your feelings.
Why is self-compassion important?
Self-compassion can reduce stress, build confidence and ease pain. When you’re kind to yourself, you’re able to think more clearly and see a way forward. Suzy Reading is a psychologist who says self-compassion helps you be your own friend and feel at peace. Self-compassion enables you to forgive yourself when you make mistakes, helping you learn and grow. Just as you would be kind to a friend who made a mistake, self-compassion helps you to be a friend to yourself.
How to practise self-compassion
There are many ways to be kind to yourself. Remind yourself that everyone messes up or struggles sometimes. Notice how you’re speaking to yourself. Suzy suggests talking to yourself using kind words. “Try calling yourself a pet name and see how that helps you choose softer words,” she says. “This is important when you are having a hard time. Kind words help us find solutions and lighten our load (负担).” Try to find out the feelings you’re experiencing. When you feel upset, you might feel angry, disappointed, sad or anxious. Name the feeling and tell yourself it’s OK for you to feel this way. Think about how to take care of yourself physically too. Give yourself a hug, go for a walk, take a few slow and deep breaths or draw a picture.
26.How does the writer develop the passage?
A.By giving examples. B.By comparing ideas.
C.By asking questions. D.By listing numbers.
27.Which of the following is a kind of self-compassion?
A.Being kind to others. B.Paying no regard to your own words.
C.Knowing others are perfect. D.Paying attention to your own feelings.
28.The underlined word “ease” in the passage probably means “________”.
A.increase B.reduce C.feel D.share
29.According to the passage, what can self-compassion do?
① Help you feel at peace. ② Make you lose your way.
③ Make you forgive yourself. ④ Help you be a friend to yourself.
A.①②③ B.②③④ C.①③④ D.①②④
30.If a student with self-compassion fails an exam, he would probably ________.

From time to time, you may suffer from being overwhelmed You may feel disappointed, sad, hurt or even helpless. 36 Here is some advice to help you.
Know your feelings. It can be hard sometimes to find the right words to express what you’re feeling. The Feelings Wheel can help. 37 Recognise your primary feeling in the middle of the wheel, and then see what other feelings this connects with as you look outwards from the center. This can help you get clear about what you’re feeling.
Accept what you feel. It is okay to feel lonely; it is okay to feel nervous; and it is okay to feel as if the world is going to end. 38 There’s nothing wrong with you feeling this way. Many of us do too, at different points in our lives.
Make a list. Sometimes you may feel overwhelmed when you have too many things to do. Perhaps there is too much to study, or you may have a long to-do list when organising a birthday party. 39 Then, list the tasks in order of importance or urgency (紧迫性). You will feel calmer when you finish the list—you would have control over the tasks and yourself!
Learning to manage overwhelming feelings takes time and practice. 40 Learn what works best for you. You only have one YOU!

36.根据前文“You may feel disappointed, sad, hurt or even helpless.”可知,前文描述了人们可能会产生的各种负面情绪,后文“Here is some advice to help you.”引出帮助应对这些情绪的建议,所以,“Dealing with such feelings doesn’t come easily.”
37.根据前文“The Feelings Wheel can help.”及后文“Recognise your primary feeling in the middle of the wheel, and then see what other feelings this connects with as you look outwards from the center.”

Perhaps there is too much to study, or you may have a long to-do list when organising a birthday party.”及后文“Then, list the tasks in order of importance or urgency (紧迫性).”可知,前文描述了事情太多导致难以承受的情况,后文提到按重要性或紧迫性列出任务,所以,“Write down the things that need to get done.”
40.根据前文“Learning to manage overwhelming feelings takes time and practice.”及后文“Learn what works best for you. You only have one YOU!”
