We live in an exceptional time in human history, with more people than ever now reaching the age of 100. However, “Living To 100” is a milestone which, until recently, was so rare that hitting it would earn you a report in the newspaper and perhaps a local radio program. Today, it is an ambition well within reach for many of us. Last week, Japan celebrated a record number of centenarian(百岁老人) — now almost 100,000. Globally, nearly half a million centenarians were alive in 2015, more than four times as many as in 1990, and the number of centenarians is expected to reach 3.7 million by 2050.
Much of this change is down to advances in medicine, as well as a better understanding of what the human body needs to function at its full potential. We also now know much more about what we can personally do to enhance our chances of hitting three-digit figures. For example, in the near future, we can learn how to eat, move and even think your way towards increasing the odds that you’ll be blowing out 100 candles on your birthday cake.
Even so, personal decisions can only take us so far, and the reality is that there is a widening gap in both lifespan and healthy lifespan between rich and poor. In the UK, people living in the richest areas now experience close to 18 extra years in good health than those in poorer regions.A recent Lancet report showed that the US life expectation gap between the longest-living demographic(人群) – Asian Americans – and the shortest-living – Native Americans and Native Alaskans – grew from 12.6 years in 2000 to 20.4 years in 2021. Access to nutritious food, safe housing and the relief of poverty from the unbearable stress of poverty are needed to check rising differences. In India, as in the rest of the world, the covid-19 pandemic fuelled a gap between the most and the least advantaged.
In our effort to pursue longer lives, let us not forget to put pressure on politicians to address this growing inequality. Living to 100 must be an ambition we can all aim for – not just something that only the world’s wealthiest have.
24.What can we infer from the data comparison in Paragraph 1?
A. Centenarians were rare in 1990.
B. Media still reports centenarians now.
C. Japan has most centenarians globally.
D. Centenarian odds are higher than ever.
25.Which is NOT the reason of living to 100 becoming achievable?
A. Advances in medical technology
B. Personal efforts to boost longevity
C. Better understanding of body function
D. Widened lifespan gap between rich and poor
26.The underlined word “fuelled” in paragraph 3 probably means ______.
A. widened B. ignored C. reduced D. hidden
27.What is the author's purpose in writing paragraph 4?
A.The wealthy have longer lives.
B. Living to 100 is our common goal.
C. Press politicians for equal lifespan.
D. Pressing politicians fixes inequality.

Recently, videos of using AI to select watermelons go viral on social media, claiming the technology can pick sweet fruit. As watermelon season approaches, many people find buying a watermelon like opening a surprise box. Will it be a dud? To put AI to the test, a reporter from xxcb.cn visited a store in Changsha, Central China’s Hunan Province to conduct an experiment. The reporter took photos and numbered eight watermelons, which allowed for clear identification and comparison later, and then had AI select the sweetest one.
One AI software program admitted it couldn’t judge sweetness of the numbered watermelons. “Usually, methods to determine the sweetness of a watermelon include observing the appearance, weight, and sound of the watermelon. Tapping (拍) the watermelon can also be used to determine its sweetness.” the AI software explained.
Another gave tips on what to look for in choosing a sweet watermelon. “Based on the shape of the watermelon, rounder watermelons usually indicate a more uniform internal structure, which may be a sign of higher sweetness. In the image, watermelons 1 and 8 look rounder and larger, indicating higher sweetness. However, the final sweetness needs to be confirmed by taste,” the AI software said. Following the AI’s recommendation, the reporter decided to put these two to the test. After cutting open watermelons 1 and 8, both were red and juicy, but watermelon 1 was slightly sweeter.
So, is using AI to pick fruit dependable? According to an AI expert, AI can provide helpful suggestions based on visual and base knowledge, but it’s not absolutely right. While AI can be a useful tool for those unsure how to choose a melon, experienced individuals may still rely on traditional methods like tapping and smelling. Eventually, the decision on which watermelon to choose may still come down to personal preference and practical experience.
28. What does the underlined word “dud” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Something small. B. Something pricey.
C. Something tasteless. D. Something seasonal.
29. Why did the first AI admit its inability?
A. It didn’t get clear melon photos. B. It tended to combine more data.
C. It hadn’t answered similar questions. D. It considered the shape unimportant.
30. How did the second AI differ from the first one?
A. It confirmed sweetness via sound. B. It showed three selection methods.
C. It offered weight-based tips. D. It linked sweetness to sizes.
31. What is the author’s attitude toward AI picking melons?
A. Objective. B. Negative.
C. Worried. D. Unclear.

As the main part of lots of delicious meals, the potato is already a special vegetable. Now, scientists have produced an even more extraordinary one that could help people cope with the effects of global warming. As the Earth's temperatures rise, growing crops in warmer conditions could be very important for feeding people around the world.
Researchers from the University of Essex in the UK and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in the US have joined an international research project called RIPE. Their goal is to improve a type of potato named Desiree so that it can adapt to the increasingly rising temperatures. To do this, they are using genetic modification, a method where scientists purposely change the instructions inside the plant that affect how it grows. These instructions are carried by genes (基因), which are small parts of DNA. DNA is a chemical that contains all the information needed for living things to develop and grow.
Then the scientists added two genes to the potato. This change made the process called photorespiration, which normally consumes a lot of energy, work in a new way. As a result, the plant wasted less energy and could absorb more for growth. This is especially helpful in hot weather, allowing the plant to grow well and produce more potatoes.
The researchers finally tested the plant by growing it in hotter conditions at a farm in the US state of Illinois. They found that, under these conditions, the crop produced 30% more potatoes than regular plants. The process did not affect the taste of potatoes or their nutrients. Dr. Katherine, an expert in this field, said it was definitely a breakthrough to grow crops that can cope with "more frequent and intense heatwave events" to feed people in places most at risk from global warming.
Scientists are greatly encouraged by the promising results of this project. However, they plan to conduct further research to explore wider applications. For instance, they hope to apply similar methods to other crops that are also threatened by global warming, such as cassava—a root vegetable widely consumed in many countries.
32.Why did the researchers start the project?
A.To know the working principle of DNA.
B. To make the potato taste more delicious.
C. To help the potato grow in hotter weather.
D. To improve the living condition of crops.
33. What can be inferred about the changed photorespiration in paragraph 3?
A. It requires the plant to get more energy.
B. It absorbs energy available for the plant.
C. It provides the plant more usable energy.
D. It improves how the plant uses its energy.
34. What is Dr. Katherine’s attitude toward the Desiree potato?
A. Unclear.
B. Doubtful.
C. Dismissive.
D. Approving.
35.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. Scientists with new methods.
B. Expectation for future studies.
C. Success of potato growth in Illinois.
D. Global warming’s impact on cassava.

Last weekend, feeling stressed out from my endless schoolwork, I decided to go hiking in the quiet suburban forest alone to refresh myself. The weather was pleasant in the afternoon. The air smelled of grass and soil, and the quiet path was covered with thick golden fallen leaves. Absorbed in the peaceful and beautiful scenery, I walked slowly forward step by step, unconsciously leaving the familiar main road far behind me. I had made a careful plan to head back before sunset, but I enjoyed the journey so much that I completely lost track of time.
As the sky gradually turned grey, cold wind swept through the woods, making the branches shake violently. A strong sense of fear suddenly struck me, and I realized helplessly that I had got lost. Panic flooded my heart in an instant. My hands turned cold and my mind went blank. I hurriedly took out my phone to ask for help, only to find there was no signal at all in the remote forest. I kept walking aimlessly on the endless winding path, trying to find my way back. Just when I was trapped in total despair and did not know what to do next, I heard a weak and painful cough from behind the thick bushes.Paragraph 1:
Curious and hesitant, I walked towards the sound carefully. _____________________

Good morning, everyone. Today I’d like to share our school volunteer project with you. Last month, we took part in a special activity about cultural heritage and wildlife protection. We learned to make paper-cuttings of wild animals. A famous artist came to teach us. Through this activity, we not only enjoyed traditional Chinese art but also realized the importance of protecting nature. We hope more students will join us in the future.

Dear Sir/Madam,
I’m Li Hua, an exchange student in London. Knowing our school will hold a Chinese paper-cutting exhibition, I’m writing to apply to be a volunteer.
I have learned paper-cutting for several years and have a good knowledge of Chinese traditional culture. Moreover, I can speak fluent English, so I can introduce paper-cutting culture to foreign visitors. I can also help arrange the exhibition and offer service to guests.
I sincerely hope to get this opportunity.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节 读后续写 标准满分范文
Paragraph 1:
Curious and hesitant, I walked towards the sound carefully. I found an old hiker sitting by the bush, who had twisted his ankle and couldn’t move. He looked weak and helpless. I comforted him patiently and shared my food and water with him. Since he could not walk alone, I supported him slowly and searched for the way out step by step. Though I was still lost, I decided not to leave him alone in the wild forest.
Paragraph 2:
With my efforts paying off, we finally walked out of the forest before dark. The old man was extremely grateful and kept thanking me. He offered to drive me home safely. During the ride, he told me many valuable hiking experiences. This meaningful lesson taught me that kindness is a treasure. Even when we are in trouble, we should still reach out a helping hand to others.
