YOU CAN HELP!
Have you ever wanted to help out in the community but weren’t sure how? Check out these exciting projects in your local community.
❶TREES FOR CITIES
Everyone would like their city to have more trees, but who is going to plant them? In this project, we work with children of all ages and show them how to plant their own trees. As well as improving the local environment, the work helps them learn more about nature. So far, we’ve planted more than 500 trees around the city—and we plan to plant many more!
❷SENIOR CITIZENS’ MUSIC CAFE
We organize afternoons of music and dancing activities for elderly people who are suffering from (患有) diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease. Music and dancing can help them get more enjoyment out of life. Music has also been shown to improve memory and slow down memory loss. If you like music and dancing, come along and help us!
❸FOOD FOR LIFE
Thousands of people in the city can’t afford enough food. Meanwhile, supermarkets are throwing perfectly good food away. We collect food from shops and restaurants, and hand it out to the people who need it most—completely for free. If you’ve got a car or a bike, come along and get involved (参与).
❹EDIBLE (可食用的) PLAYGROUNDS
One in three students leaves school overweight from eating unhealthy food. We are working with schools to show children how they can use their school playground to grow fruit and vegetables. “Gavin!” called Mr. Capshaw. “We’re ready to go. Are you coming?”
Gavin walked slowly down the stairs. Finally he joined his parents at the door.
“I’m ready,” he sighed (叹气).
“This will be fun. I know you’ll enjoy the performance,” Mrs. Capshaw said. “Afterward, we might even meet Dad’s college friend Joseph. He has a lead role in the show.”
The Capshaws walked toward the subway station. “I don’t even like ballet (芭蕾舞),” Gavin said.
“Not all dance is ballet, Gavin,” said Mr. Capshaw. “The show we’re going to see tonight is modern dance. But there are many other kinds of dance, too—tap, jazz dance, breakdancing, square dance, the tango, the waltz. I’d like you to keep an open mind on this.”
Gavin sighed again. “Okay, Dad. I’ll do my best.”
About 45 minutes later, the Capshaws arrived at the theater. Gavin looked around while he waited for the performance to begin. He couldn’t believe how many people there were in the theater. Suddenly, the lights went off, and the audience began to clap (鼓掌).
Once the performance began, Gavin forgot about everything else. He gave his full attention to the performance. The performers made the moves look so easy, but he could tell it was much more difficult than it appeared.
After the performance, Gavin’s parents asked him what he thought. “That was amazing. I’m so glad we came,” he replied.
They then went to meet Joseph, who was excited to see them.
“Is it a lot of work to prepare the show?” Gavin asked Joseph.
Joseph smiled. “I’ve never worked so hard in my life,” he said, “but I’ve also never had so much fun. Are you a performer, Gavin?”
Gavin stared (注视) at Joseph and shook his head.
“Do you think dance is something you’d like to try?” asked Joseph. “You seem very pleased with tonight’s show. The performing arts center is only a few blocks from here, and they offer a beginner’s class in modern dance. I know some of the teachers there. I’d be happy to introduce you if you’re interested.”
Gavin smiled widely. “When can I start?” he asked.

C
Let’s say you need to wake up by 7 am to get to school on time. So you set your first alarm for 6:30 am, your second for 6:45 am and your third for 6:55 am for fear of oversleeping. However, this can be bad for your health because it makes sleep quality poorer.
A good sleep happens in cycles (周期). Each cycle has four periods. During Period One, we go into a light sleep. Our body relaxes and our heartbeat (心跳) slows. As we fall deeper into sleep, Period Two begins. Our eyes stop moving and our body temperature drops with slower heartbeat. Then comes the third period which is the deepest sleep and also the hardest for people to wake up from. The last is the fourth period, known as rapid eye movement sleep, or REM sleep. Our eyes move rapidly from side to side during this period. At the same time, our breathing (呼吸) picks up and our heartbeat rises.
REM sleep is very important because most of our dreams take place during it. This allows our brain to process emotions (情绪). REM sleep also helps the brain turn the new knowledge gained during the day into memories. When we get enough REM sleep, it is easier to focus on studying the next day.
Since REM sleep mostly takes place in the last hours of a night’s sleep, it is a bad idea to disrupt it with alarms ringing one after another.
“My advice is that you set one alarm,” said a doctor. She also suggested that people try alarms that use light, not sound, to wake up.
根据材料内容选择最佳答案。
31. How does the writer start the text?
A. By listing facts. B. By telling a story.
C. By comparing ideas. D. By giving an example.
32. Which of the following shows the change of heartbeat during a sleep cycle?(x=time in a sleep cycle, y= heartbeat rate)
A. B. C. D.
33. What may happen during REM sleep?
①Eyes move quickly. ②Breathing picks up.
③Brain processes emotions. ④Brain gets new knowledge.
A. ①②③ B. ②③④ C. ①③④ D. ①②④
34. What does the underlined word“disrupt” mean?
A. Keep something working. B. Cause something to get longer.
C. Stop something from continuing. D. Make something change suddenly.
35. What does the writer mainly want to tell us?
A. REM sleep is the most important period in a sleep cycle.
B. Having enough sleep is important for our body and mind.
C. People usually set many alarms in order to avoid oversleeping.
D. It’s unwise to wake ourselves up in the morning with several alarms.
【答案】31. D 32. B 33. A 34. C 35. D
文章开头“Let’s say you need to wake up by 7 am...you set your first alarm...second...third...”
根据原文信息:①“Our eyes move rapidly from side to side during this period.” 对应“眼睛快速移动”,正确;②“At the same time, our breathing picks up and our heartbeat rises.” 对应“呼吸加快”,正确;③“This allows our brain to process emotions.” 对应“大脑处理情绪”,正确;④“REM sleep also helps the brain turn the new knowledge gained during the day into memories.” 说明新知识是白天获取的,REM阶段是将其转化为记忆,而非“获取新知识”,④错误。因此选①②③。
【34题详解】
结合上下文“Since REM sleep mostly takes place in the last hours of a night’s sleep, it is a bad idea to disrupt it with alarms ringing one after another.”,多次闹钟会打断持续的REM睡眠,因此“disrupt”的含义是“打断、阻止……继续进行”。
【35题详解】
文章从“多次闹钟影响睡眠质量”的现象切入,介绍睡眠周期和 REM 睡眠的重要性,最终落脚点是“不建议用多个闹钟叫醒自己”。A选项仅强调REM睡眠的重要性,并非全文主旨;B选项范围过大,未紧扣“多次闹钟”这一核心;C选项只是开篇的背景现象,不是作者想传达的主要观点。因此选D。
D
Some schools have started asking parents to put their phones away when they pick up their kids in the afternoon. They say students who are excited to be picked up at the end of a long day often find their parents staring into their phones. Some parents think the idea is okay with them, while others disagree with the request. What do you think? ____36____

Many children have limits (限制) on how much time they’re allowed to spend on screens each day. No—adults can make their own choices
____39____ They should be allowed to make their own decisions about when, where, and how they use their phones. Sometimes adults can end up waiting outside school for a while if class goes long. And it’s not like adults are only using their phones for games or mindless activities. ____40____ They’re reading the news or dealing with messages and calls from family members.

Music and dancing can help them get more enjoyment out of life. Music has also been shown to improve memory and slow down memory loss. If you like music and dancing, come along and help us!
❸FOOD FOR LIFE
Thousands of people in the city can’t afford enough food. Meanwhile, supermarkets are throwing perfectly good food away. We collect food from shops and restaurants, and hand it out to the people who need it most—completely for free. If you’ve got a car or a bike, come along and get involved (参与).

A. REM sleep is the most important period in a sleep cycle.

Some schools have started asking parents to put their phones away when they pick up their kids in the afternoon. They say students who are excited to be picked up at the end of a long day often find their parents staring into their phones. Some parents think the idea is okay with them, while others disagree with the request. What do you think? ____36____
Yes—adults should set an example
Many children have limits (限制) on how much time they’re allowed to spend on screens each day. If adults are standing outside the school looking at their phones, they’re not setting a very good example about managing screen time. ____37____ It’s bad for adults too. Having to put their phones away would allow them to slow down, be more focused, and stay in the moment. ____38____ What’s more, it would be nice for children to come out and see an adult who’s excited to greet them.

“I want you to leave me in ____58____. Can you just stop talking?” Eliza finally said.
Then we had the ____59____ walk I’d ever experienced till we saw a bird lying on the ground. “Poor little bird. He must get hurt,” Eliza said in a ____60____ voice.
As we got closer, Eliza asked, “Is he in pain, like my grandfather?” I was surprised to hear that.
“He ____61____ his leg just before I came to camp and he is still in hospital. He hides his pain from others, so nobody truly understands how much pain he’s experiencing.” Her voice was ____62____. Before I could find words to say something, she continued, “I’m sorry. Whenever I get sad, I act rudely. I guess I just need some time by ____63____.”
“I get it,” I said. “I sometimes fail to deal with my bad feelings, too. I ____64____ hope your grandfather will be healthier soon.”
“Thank you,” she said, smiling. After that, Eliza would let us know ____65____ she needed space and we would let her be alone for a while.
So, dear Sandy, maybe the rude kid in your class doesn’t know how he can go through a hard time. Why not give him a second chance?
Wish you all the best.
Tina
