We usually think fish can’t talk. But there are a lot of sounds under the ocean(海洋). In fact, scientists believe that all sea animals - at least 250,000 kinds - can “speak”! “When we dive, we can hear animals all around us,” UK scientist Steve Simpson told the BBC.
In the past years, scientists used sound recorders (录音机) to hear fish’s “voices”. There are now thousands of recorders in the ocean. They help scientists match sounds with sea life.
A healthy coral reef (珊瑚礁) is one of the noisiest places in the ocean. Scientists can tell if it’s healthy by listening to it. A healthy coral reef should be full of sounds made by fish. When some coral reefs died in 2015 and 2016, they became quiet. After people set up the protected areas, scientists heard the animals come back.
By listening to the ocean, scientists start to understand sea animals’ languages. Strong clownfish make short “chirp” sounds when going after small clownfish. They do this to show they are more powerful. A damselfish can make a pop sound to scare (惊吓) other fish by quickly opening and closing its mouth. Mother dolphins can use a special voice to talk to their babies. They are saying “I’m here” to comfort the baby dolphins.
29. What does the underlined word “They” in Paragraph 2 refer to(指的是)?
A. Coral reefs. B. Animals’ voices. C. Sound recorders. D. Sea life.
30. According to the passage, how can scientists tell if a coral reef is healthy?
A. By noticing the color of the coral reef. B. By listening to the sounds in the coral reef.
C. By watching the size of the coral reef. D. By counting the number of fish in the coral reef.
31. What is the last paragraph mainly about?

C. The health of living things in the sea. D. The ways of protecting sea life.

A. The sounds of animals in the ocean. B. The effect of healthy sea life.
C. The health of living things in the sea. D. The ways of protecting sea life.

Traditional(传统的) Chinese Medicine(TCM) is like a treasure in Chinese history. It is an important part of China. Chinese doctors have smart ways to find out what is wrong with patients, like “looking, listening, asking, and feeling your pulse (脉搏)”. They also have special ways to solve(解决) health problems, like using herbs (草药) and acupuncture(针灸).
The ideas of TCM emerged (形成) for the first time during the period from the Warring States to the Han Dynasty. The Shennong Ben Cao Jing was the beginning to understand how the herbs could help us. It tells the story of an emperor who tasted hundreds of herbs. Unluckily, he ate one that made him really sick. His findings are important in Chinese Medicine and that’s why we remember him as “Shennong” or the God of Chinese Medicine. This book records 365 plants, and a lot of them are used in medical treatment even until today.
In the 1970s, people around the world started to regard Chinese acupuncture as a real way to help with health. In 2020, when COVID-19 was causing big trouble, TCM also did well in treatment during the hard time because it helps people without any side effects (副作用).
More people everywhere are taking interest in Chinese Medicine. They’re using it and learning about it. With China getting stronger, TCM is expected to be a shining star in the world of health. It helps people understand Chinese medicine and learn why it is believed to be a treasure of our Chinese culture.

“I can’t pronounce (发音) it,” Peter said, “but l can spell it.”
He wrote down the Russian’s name on a piece of paper. It was Mr. Szczepansky.
“I know that name,” the old gentleman said. “I’ve read his book. I know many Russians in London, and they will know this man. But now, tell me all about yourselves. You’re such good children, and your mother is so kind to help a poor refugee (避难者). I want to know everything about you.”
The children began to talk about themselves, their mother, and their father. Phyllis left the waiting room for a short time and then came back carrying a pot of tea and some bread and butter.
“Perks, the porter, gave this to me,” she said. The children had a delightful tea party with the old man. Then, he got on the next train and went on his way to London.
Ten days later, the children were sitting above the station when the 5:15 train came in. They saw the old gentleman get off. The children ran down to the station. The old gentleman was waiting for them.
“I have good news for you,” he said. “l have found the Russian’s wife and child. May I come with you to your cottage (村舍) and tell him the good news?”
The children led the old gentleman to their cottage.
