From ancient medical pioneers to modern scientific innovators, these brilliant minds transformed our understanding of life and health.
Ibn Avicenna
Avicenna was a Persian, who was regarded as one of the most significant physicians, astronomers, thinkers and writers of the Islamic Golden Age and the father of early modern medicine. He described an early scientific method of enquiry and wrote “The Canon of Medicine” in 1025, which was used as the standard medical textbook in Europe up to the 18th century.
Ignaz Semmelweis
Bon in 1818, Semmelweis was a Hungarian physician and scientist and an early pioneer of antiseptic procedures. Passage 4
(24-25高二下·安徽合肥·期末)
Skip the West End and discover some exciting, theatrical treasures—maybe in a pub or under a railway station—in one of London’s many alternative theatres. If you want to experience the glorious rush of discovering a five-star show in a 50-capacity auditorium, for a £ 10 ticket, off-West End is the way to go.
Theatre 503
Through the always-buzzing Latchmere Pub, up a very narrow staircase, and beyond a dinky foyer(门厅), you will find yourself at Theatre 503. It can hold 63 people at a time, which is a tight squeeze even then. But it’ s well worth the intimacy(亲密感) that you’ll necessarily share with your neighbour for the outstanding productions.
King’s Head Theatre
Perhaps the perfect example of London pub theatre, the King’s Head has been in business since the 1970s. The King’s Head is consistent only in its stubborn refusal to be pigeonholed or, indeed to be made into anything else. It feels like London theatre’s uncle who still wears ripped jeans and listens to cool music, refusing to give up its idealistic integrity for something perhaps more sensible but far less fun.
Soho Theatre
An institution that hardly needs introducing, Soho Theatre has been at the forefront for new writing and comedy for decades, producing some of the most exciting new talent on the scene today. As the name suggests, the theatre sits in the centre of Soho, and its bar has become a hub for artists and audiences alike.
Vaults Theatre

Trying to find the perfect present is about as easy as trying to read someone’s mind. Few people will actually tell you what they want for a special occasion and most of the time, your loved ones will insist that they don’t need or want anything! So, what to do? Here are some tips that could help.
Start Early
Starting your shopping early can have many advantages. For instance, it gives you enough time to come up with ideas for what you should buy your friends or family members. Moreover, the closer it gets to holidays, the higher the prices go up. So, save your money by being an early bird.
Make a List
Here, you can write down everything your friends or family members love. This can include food, hobbies, experiences, and more. Then try to determine how to use this information to find a gift that perfectly suits them. If you are lucky, you should be able to find good ideas in one of these lists.
Think outside the Box
Often, the reason why you get stuck for gift ideas is that you only focus on the same kind of presents. If you are still coming up empty, it is time to get creative. You can find something your friends or family members can use every day. When in doubt, you can simply put smaller presents together to make up a larger, more meaningful gift.
Gift an Experience
In case you are still feeling a little stuck, go ahead and find something that the two of you can do together. It may be a class, or anything else, where you can enjoy each other’s company. In short, you will be able to give them the gift of friendship.
1.Start your shopping early can help you _______.

A truly unique place made up of eleven disused train tunnels below Waterloo station, with an atmosphere all of its own. Not only is Vaults Theatre home to some of the most thrilling immersive and alternative theatre, but it’s also leading the way in accessibility, offering a pay-what-you-can ticket price on Wednesdays and Sundays as of Autumn 2022.
1.What is mentioned about Theatre 503?
A.Its creator. B.Its history. C.Its capacity. D.Its popularity.
2.What does King’s Head Theatre feature?
A.Keeping itself. B.Reasonable price.
C.Being more sensible. D.Beauty in appearance.
3.Which of the following made use of abandoned railways?
A.Theatre 503. B.King’s Head Theatre.
C.Soho Theatre. D.Vaults Theatre.
【答案】1.C 2.A 3.D
