Do Emojis Enrich (丰富) Language?
Over the past ten years, emojis have become very popular. In 2016, there were about 1,800 emojis on mobile phones. By 2026, that number had grown to 3,954. Today, people send about five billion emojis every day. Emojis have become a part of online communication. But do emojis truly make the language richer?
Yes—they bring language to life.
Many people believe emojis make communication easier and more fun. When you send a text message, your friends cannot see your face or hear the tone (语调) of your voice. In such cases, emojis help you show your feelings clearly, much like hand gestures in face-to-face conversations. One small emoji can say what might take a whole sentence to say. What’s more, emojis are usually cute and funny. They add colour to messages, making them more joyful to read.
No—words are all we need.
Some people think that we already have many ways to express ourselves. The English language has over 170,000 words. With words and grammar, we can express exactly what we mean. They also point out that the same emoji can carry different meanings for different people, so emojis can be confusing (困惑的) to some people. Sometimes people like to use a group of emojis together but the meaning of them is never as clear as a well-written sentence.
So, do emojis help us talk to each other better? The answer may depend on how we use them.

C. It has over 170,000 words. D. It has over 1,700,000 words.
4. Why can emojis be confusing to some people?

One hot summer day, Xu Heng was travelling with his friends. They walked for a long time under the burning sun, and they were all very thirsty and tired.
Suddenly, they saw a big pear tree full of ripe, juicy pears. All the other travellers ran to the tree at once. They climbed the tree, picked the pears, and ate them happily.
But Xu Heng just sat under a tree and rested. He didn’t move to pick any pears.
One of his friends came to him and said, “Xu Heng, why don’t you pick a pear? We are so thirsty! The pears taste so delicious.”
Xu Heng shook his head and said, “The pear tree is not mine. I can’t take the pears without the owner’s permission. It is wrong.” His friend laughed and said, “Oh, come on! The owner of the tree is not here. There is no one around. No one will know if you take a pear.”
Xu Heng looked at his friend seriously and said, “Even if the owner is not here, my heart is here. I must be honest. I can’t do anything that is wrong, even if no one sees it.” His friends felt very ashamed after they heard this. Then they stopped eating the pears and continued the travel.

根据文章第一段第一句“Xu Heng was a famous scholar and educator in the Yuan Dynasty.”
根据第三段画线词所在的句子“They climbed the tree, picked the pears, and ate them happily.”
根据文章第七段第二句“His friends felt very ashamed after they heard this.”
根据文章发展顺序:第三段“All the other travellers ran to the tree at once. They climbed the tree”对应c“朋友们跑向树并爬上去”;第四段“Xu Heng just sat under a tree and rested”对应a“许衡在树下休息”;第六段“Xu Heng shook his head and said, “The pear tree… It is wrong.””对应b“朋友劝他吃梨,许衡摇头解释”;第七段“His friends felt very ashamed… and continued the travel.”

Have you ever heard of Yu Tong Shop? It is the only place in Guangzhou where people make traditional Cantonese pastry molds (广式糕点模具) by hand. The shop is run by 65-year-old Yu Zhaoji. He has been making molds for over 50 years, continuing a family tradition. Yu’s great-great-grandfather started the business about 160 years ago.
For centuries, handmade molds have played an important role in making Cantonese pastries. Before handmade molds started to become less commonly used around the year 2000, Yu Tong Shop was always busy with orders, especially from the 1970s to the 1990s.
Today, there are fewer traditional Cantonese pastry mold makers. Making molds by hand is slow and requires special carving (雕刻) skills. The process makes handmade molds much more expensive than machine-made ones. “Speed is everything today,” Yu explained. “But learning this skill takes years of practice.” Although machines are faster, Yu believes they can never truly supersede human hands.
To protect traditions, Guangzhou opened its first intangible cultural heritage district (非物质文化遗产街区) in August, 2020. With the support of the government, Yu moved his shop there. Now, he introduces his skills to tourists, and he also teaches them to make molds.
“Some people join me for fun, and others for a challenge,” Yu said. He thinks handmade items are special and meaningful because they are made with care and carry warmth. He adds, “If you make a mold yourself, even an imperfect one, the pastries made with it will taste better.”
11. How does the writer start the text?
A. By telling a story. B. By giving a saying. C. By asking a question. D. By using an example.
12. When did Yu’s great-great-grandfather start making molds?
A. About 180 years ago. B. About 160 years ago. C. About 150 years ago. D. About 65 years ago.
13. What does the underlined word “supersede” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. take the place of B. look up to C. pay attention to D. take pride in
14. What does Yu Zhaoji think of handmade items?
A. Popular but expensive. B. Old and valuable. C. Traditional but useless. D. Special and meaningful.
15. What’s the purpose of the text?
A. To teach people the history of carving.
B. To tell people the steps of making pastry molds.
C. To encourage people to know and protect traditions.
D. To explain why handmade molds are much more expensive.
C 12. B 13. A 14. D 15. C

根据第一段最后一句“Yu’s great-great-grandfather started the business about 160 years ago.”
根据画线词所在句“Although machines are faster, Yu believes they can never truly supersede human hands.”

As a middle school student, you may often feel that your life is full of homework, tests and after-school classes. You don’t have time for your hobbies. ___16___ Here are some suggestions.
First, learn to plan your time. ___17___ But there’s never enough. You can make a daily plan. Write down the time for schoolwork and the time for your hobbies. Try this idea: divide your day into small parts (like 30 minutes each) and decide what to do in each part. For example, do math homework from 6:00 to 6:30 p.m. or play the guitar from 7:30 to 8:00 p.m.
___18___ Hobbies don’t have to be completely separate from schoolwork. Reading makes your brain stronger. Hobbies like computer coding (编码) or taking photos can help you solve problems. Similarly, joining an English drama club can improve your speaking skills. Some hobbies can even improve your schoolwork! ___19___ She often records short videos to explain physics experiments, which helps her understand lessons better. “My hobby makes learning fun,” she said.
Third, pay full attention to just one thing. During study time, focus on (专注于) finishing tasks instead of keep checking your phone. ___20___
Both study and hobbies matter. Balance doesn’t mean spending equal (相同的) time on each—just use time wisely and plan it well. Remember, a balanced life makes you better and happier.
A. Time is important for everyone.
