B For more than two decades, Isabella Ducrot, an artist who was born in Naples in 1931, has lived in an apartment in the center of Rome. When I knocked on her door this past spring, Ducrot, who is tall and upright, grasped my hand more firmly than I would have expected, saying, “I must tell you immediately that I have never been so happy in my life!” Only in the past five years has Ducrot, who turned ninety-four in June, become internationally recognized for her art, which she didn’t even begin making until she was in her fifties. When creating her works, she stands and uses a brush sometimes attached to a stick, sweeping ink or paint onto paper. Typically made in series, her works are light, energetic, and beautiful. An Italian scholar writes that he, as well as many others, was amazed to discover that the creator of such delicate works is “a lady who is well over the age of eighty.” Of course, this reaction says as much about the limitations of the observer’s imagination as it does about the reaches of Ducrot’s. Andrea Viliani, who will exhibit a selection of Ducrot’s works this summer, told me Ducrot is fortunate that her preferred methods and materials remain relatively easy for her to handle, compared with, say, sculpting metal or painting with oils on heavy canvases (画布). “Her work is easy to hold, easy to paint, and easy to store,” Viliani said. “It is very convenient that she chose something so soft.” We tend to assign to the elderly the vague (模糊的) and often fading quality of wisdom, thus suggesting that their own creative and intellectual (智力的) growth has come to an end, and that their only role left is to give advice to others. Ducrot’s life offers an alternative possibility: an individual might keep wide-eyed and open to experience until the very end. 4.What does the author intend to show about Ducrot in paragraph 1? A.Her wealth. B.Her talent. C.Her passion. D.Her reputation. 5.What does the Italian scholar’s reaction reveal? A.He prefers delicate works. B.Ducrot’s works mask her age. C.He has a sharp eye for art. D.Ducrot’s works limit his imagination. 6.What characterizes Ducrot’s technique? A.Precision. B.Efficiency. C.Uniqueness. D.Manageability. 7.What message does Ducrot’s life convey to the elderly? A.Ignoring the effects of aging. B.Restarting the growth of wisdom. C.Remaining engaged with the world. D.Offering advice to next generations. C A household washing machine can generate up to 500 grams of microplastics each year, with much ending up at wastewater treatment plants and ultimately spread onto fields. Scientists have been seeking ways to remove microplastics before they enter the environment. “Existing filter (过滤) systems, however, have serious disadvantages,” explains Dr. Leandra Hamann of the University of Bonn. “Some quickly become blocked, others do not work efficiently.” To find a better solution, Hamann turned to biology for ideas. The team focused on fish that feed by filtering water — the result of evolution. Their gill arch (鳃弓) system forms a structure that is widest at the mouth and narrows towards the gullet (食道). The structure is covered in tiny teeth, creating a natural filter network. “During food intake, the water flowing through it is filtered, and the microplastic-free water is then released back into the environment,” explains Hamann. “However, some organisms are too big for this. Thanks to the shape, they then roll towards the gullet, where they are collected until the fish swallows, which empties the system.” This nature-inspired design prevents blockages and traps nearly all microplastics — exactly the two key advantages needed for a washing machine microplastic filter. To build a version for washing machines, the researchers recreated the gill arch system and tested various filter sizes and opening angles. After comparing different structural dimensions, ultimately, the team identified a combination of parameters, which enabled the system to separate more than 99% of the microplastics without blockage in lab experiments. With no complex moving parts, the design is low-cost. Captured microplastics could be pressed inside the machine to squeeze out remaining water, with the resulting tiny plastic balls removed and thrown in the ordinary garbage. The researchers hope companies will refine the design for potential commercial application, which could at least partially reduce microplastic spread. The need is pressing: studies suggest microplastics may pose severe health risks, and they’ve already been found in breast milk — and even human brains. 8.What do the researchers aim to do? A.To remove microplastics completely. B.To overcome the existing drawbacks. C.To upgrade wastewater treatment plants. D.To improve washing machine efficiency. 9.What is paragraph 3 mainly about? A.What problems plastics bring to fish. B.Where some organisms are collected. C.Why the gill arch system has tiny teeth. D.How fish trap microplastics from water. 10.What does the underlined “parameters” in paragraph 4 probably mean? A.Lab methods. B.Mechanical tools. C.Processed data. D.Replacement parts. 11.What can be inferred from the last paragraph about the design? A.It can end microplastics spread. B.It will pose potential health risks. C.It will revolutionize home appliances. D.It may have application prospects. D WE MAY have been missing signals from intelligent aliens (外星人) because of solar wind. Researchers from the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Institute say this means we have been watching for the wrong type of signal, potentially failing to spot promising evidence of alien life, but the chances of a future discovery are now higher. The not-for-profit organisation carries out research to help prove the existence of alien life, which includes listening for radio signals from outer space that cannot be explained by natural cosmological phenomena. Such a signal was previously expected to be a sharp, distinct radio signal in a narrow frequency range. But the new research suggests that any such signals sent from distant planets may end up being made fainter and wider in the frequency band — essentially blurred slightly — as they pass through the stellar (恒星) winds of stars. Vishal Gajjar and Grayce Brown at the SETI Institute calculated the scale of the effect on radio transmissions (传输) from spacecraft in our own solar system, and then extrapolated that to other stellar environments. They found that a 100-megahertz signal could be widened as much as 100 hertz — enough to “fall below traditional detection thresholds”. A space weather event can similarly increase the amount of broadening experienced by a signal to a significant degree. John Elliott at the University of St Andrews, UK, says he sees the news as the glass being half-full, not half-empty: it means previous searches may have missed evidence, but also means that future searches will be more likely to succeed. “It’s over 50 years that we’ve been actively searching and that’s a blink of the eye, isn’t it, when you think about it,” says Elliott. 12.Why have researchers possibly failed to receive signals from intelligent aliens? A.The signals cannot reach the Earth. B.Their equipment was not advanced enough. C.The signals did not appear in the expected form. D.Space weather events prevented the signal traveling. 13.How is the alien signal affected by the stellar winds of stars? (Note: Plots show relative changes in signal width and strength, not absolute values.) 14.What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about? A.How the new findings were reached. B.How spacecraft send radio signals. C.What affects radio signal transmission. D.What helped researchers make progress. 15.Which statement does John Elliott probably agree with? A.Much progress has been made so far. B.Future discoveries will be fruitful. C.Previous searches wasted a lot of time. D.Fifty years is too long for alien hunting. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) William Shakespeare may have written that “all the world’s a stage”, but sadly theaters witness a decline in school visits due to budget pressures. 16 The most obvious benefit is academic. Students watching a live play outperform those seeing the same play as a film adaptation on knowledge of content and vocabulary. 17 When seeing it brought to life, they can build a thorough understanding in discussing the staging and interpretations of stage directions. Live theater also teaches how to develop relationships. People’s heart rates synchronize (同步) in a theater audience. This is a behavior that has been shown to enhance social bonding. 18 In fact, the common heightened emotion of watching a play also teaches students that it’s ok to feel and express emotions such as sadness. 19 Schools really welcome using theater and plays to open up difficult discussions where students can explore diverse perspectives and accept others with an open mind. As a result, students are more likely to accept statements such as “I think people can have different opinions about the same thing”. Finally, theater helps open students’ eyes up to the range of jobs available within the industry. 20 There are many backstage roles, which often don’t become obvious until you experience a live performance. Given these significant benefits — academic, emotional, social, and occupational — schools should guarantee that students never miss out on these transformative experiences. A.Plays don’t just require actors. B.Live theater makes class discussion intolerable. C.The actual journey to the theater also boosts social tolerance. D.A synchronized audience is perfect for building social tolerance. E.The shared experience of something moving helps people connect. F.Yet, live theater experiences remain vital for students’ development. G.For those studying English plays, a text of a play is merely a blueprint. 第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 When I was 14, I met Mrs. Korthaus, a warm English teacher, who gave me the best 21 in my life. We moved with our 3-year-old daughter, Aria, from the bustling streets of San Francisco to Asheville, a small Appalachian town. To me, relocating from a major international city to the mountains seemed like a “wild experiment”, filled with the unknown. However, Asheville quickly got its hooks into us. We opened a restaurant, and soon discovered that life here felt “real”. During a local festival, I watched Aria run to embrace a stranger of her age, while around them, punk-rock cooks and elderly people from all walks of life held hands in a community dance. I realized then that people moved here to rediscover community and look out for each other. We had found our “forever roots” in this unique haven of openness and tolerance. But our bond was tested on September 27, 2024, when Hurricane Helene struck with record-breaking quantities of rain. We awoke to a world of utter devastation. Ankle-deep streams had turned into wild rivers, smashing homes and businesses. The ruin was complete: roads were washed out, power lines were down, and we were cut off from the rest of the world. No cell service, no Internet, no running water — only the frightening silence of isolation. Refusing to sit still and grieve, Meherwan and I gathered a small crew at our restaurant. We had thrived here for nineteen years, and now it was time to give back. By the second day, we began cooking for our neighbors, despite the lack of resources. We weren’t just serving food; we were trying to sustain the spirit of our town. While we were busy in the kitchen, I looked up to see a group of kids wandering in on their bikes. They weren’t looking for a handout but rather to give a hand. With their boots covered in mud, they stood ready. “We want to help,” one of them said firmly. 注意: 1.续写词数应为150 左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡相应位置作答。 I nodded and assigned the young volunteers to the sandwich station. ___________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ Soon, similar scenes of support were playing out all over the city. ___________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ 高三英语 第 2 页 共 9 页 高三英语 第 一 页 共 9 页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
