My name is George. When I was in middle school, I experienced a strong earthquake. When I was listening to the teacher carefully, suddenly I felt the ground shaking and everything started moving. Everyone in the classroom was shouting and crying. I was scared and even thought of the end of the world.
When the shaking stopped, the teacher quickly took us out of the classroom to the playground. We saw that the whole school was in a mess. Teachers tried to find all the students and make sure everyone was safe. As we stood on the playground, we could still feel the aftershocks.
After making sure it was safe, teachers called our parents to take us home. My house suffered some damage (损坏). The bookcases fell onto the floor and some things were broken. But I felt happy that we were all safe.
In the following days, we learned that the earthquake caused a lot of damage to the city. Many buildings collapsed and lots of people lost their homes and family. I was sad to hear that.
Looking back on this experience, I know how important it is to be prepared for natural disasters and I feel more hopeful about safety now. We never know when they will happen, but we can find ways to protect ourselves and our family.

【小题 1】第一段提到:“When I was listening to the teacher carefully, suddenly I felt the ground shaking and everything started moving.”
【小题 2】第四段提到:“Many buildings collapsed and lots of people lost their homes and family.”
【小题 3】第二段提到:“When the shaking stopped, the teacher quickly took us out of the classroom to the playground.” 结合前文第一段 “When I was listening to the teacher carefully, suddenly I felt the ground shaking and everything started moving. Everyone in the classroom was shouting and crying.” 以及第三段 “My house suffered some damage (损坏).”
【小题 4】第一段提到:“I was scared and even thought of the end of the world.” 说明乔治一开始很害怕;第三段提到:“But I felt happy that we were all safe.” 说明看到大家都安全后他很高兴;第四段提到:“I was sad to hear that.” 说明听到很多人失去家园和家人他很伤心;最后一段提到:“I know how important it is to be prepared for natural disasters and I feel more hopeful about safety now.”
【小题 5】最后一段提到:“Looking back on this experience, I know how important it is to be prepared for natural disasters.”
There are lots of natural disasters every year. 1 Typhoons are some of the worst storms. Most happen in July, August and September.
How does a typhoon happen? When lots of sea water gets hot in the summer sun, it evaporates (蒸发) into the air. 2 When the air gets hot enough, it starts to move high up into the sky. Then cooler air around it rushes in. It fills the space that is left. After the air gets hotter, it starts to move quickly, making wind. 3 The hotter the air gets, the faster the wind moves. A typhoon has two parts. One is called the “eye”. It’s the centre of the typhoon. The other part is the wall of clouds around the eye.
Typhoons are very dangerous. In November 2013, Super Typhoon Haiyan killed more than 6,000 people in the Philippines (菲律宾). 4 What should we do when a typhoon happens?
• Stay inside. Close all the windows and stay away from it.
• Try to bring all of your things inside. Strong winds could even blow away your cars!
• 5 • If you’re told to go to a safer place, do it right now.
A.This makes the air hotter.
B.Typhoons are among them.
C.We should try to stop disasters like typhoons.
D.Listen to the radio, watch the TV or search on the Internet for important information.
E.More people were hurt and some others were missing.
F.The wind goes in circles and it keeps moving higher in the sky.
【详解】【小题 1】根据第一段 “There are lots of natural disasters every year.” 和 “Typhoons are some of the worst storms.” B “Typhoons are among them.”
【小题 2】根据第二段 “When lots of sea water gets hot in the summer sun, it evaporates into the air.” 和 “When the air gets hot enough, it starts to move high up into the sky.” A “This makes the air hotter.”
【小题 3】根据第二段 “After the air gets hotter, it starts to move quickly, making wind.” 和 “The hotter the air gets, the faster the wind moves.” F “The wind goes in circles and it keeps moving higher in the sky.”
【小题 4】根据第三段 “In November 2013, Super Typhoon Haiyan killed more than 6,000 people in the Philippines.” E “More people were hurt and some others were missing.”
和 “Try to bring all of your things inside.” 以及后一条 “If you’re told to go to a safer place, do it right now.” D “Listen to the radio, watch the TV or search on the Internet for important information.”

A thunderstorm is a common but dangerous weather event. It often brings heavy rain, strong winds, lightning, and thunder. It’s important for us to know how to protect ourselves. Here are three useful suggestions for staying safe.
First, stay indoors as soon as possible. When you see dark clouds or hear thunder in the distance, do not wait. Move into a strong building right away. Do not go outside again until the storm has passed. Staying inside is the simplest and most effective (有效的) way to reduce risk.
Second, keep away from electricity and water indoors. Do not use wired (有线的) phones, televisions, computers, or other electrical appliances during a thunderstorm. Lightning can travel through wiring (线路) and injure you. Avoid touching water taps, taking showers, or washing dishes, as water pipes (管) can also carry electricity. Stay away from windows, doors, and metal objects. Even inside a safe building, careful behavior is necessary to keep out of danger.
Third, if you are outdoors and meet a thunderstorm, act quickly. Never stand under trees or in open fields—these are the most dangerous places during a storm. Do not stand in water or run in heavy rain. If you can’t find a safe building, keep away from bicycles and other metal objects. Crouch down on the balls of your feet quickly, keep your head low, and cover your ears with your hands. Make yourself as small as possible. This position reduces the chance of being struck by lightning and buys you time until the storm passes.
In short, safety during a thunderstorm depends on calm, quick action. By following these rules, we can greatly reduce the danger. Always remember: safety comes first.
