Many people think writing for children is easier than writing for adults. But the best children’s writers and illustrators (插画家) know this is not true. Michael Rosen and Cai Gao won the 2026 Hans Christian Andersen Awards. They have spent their whole lives making books for young readers. Their work shows that children’s books can be just as deep and meaningful as any other books.
Rosen’s writing not only makes children laugh but also teaches them about life. Chocolate Cake, for example, tells the funny story of a boy who sneaks downstairs at night to eat chocolate cake. It shows everyday life through a child‘s eyes. Rosen also writes about sad and hard things in life, but he does it with great care. In Michael Rosen’s Sad Book, he speaks openly about the death of his son. He teaches children that being honest about their feelings is brave, not weak.
Like Rosen’s writing, Cai Gao’s pictures are beautiful and also make you think. Her picture book The Peach Blossom Spring takes children to a beautiful land painted in warm, soft colors. The book is based on a famous story by Tao Yuanming. It tells about a fisherman who finds a hidden village far away from the troubles of the outside world. But unlike Tao, Cai does not see this place as a dream we can’t reach. Instead, she shows it as something we can build. Through her beautiful pictures, she encourages children to create beauty and peace in their own lives.
Children’s books are made for young readers, but their power is not small at all. Rosen and Cai remind us that the greatest ideas often come in the simplest forms.
39. How does the writer start the topic?
A. By showing a common idea is wrong.
B. By talking about two children’s writers.
C. By talking about different kinds of books.
40. Why is Michael Rosen’s Sad Book special?
A. It tells a funny story about food.
B. It helps children face hard feelings.
C. It is written in a child’s point of view.
41. What does Cai Gao want children to do?
A. To find a hidden village far away.
B. To build beauty and peace in life.
C. To read more stories from ancient China.
42. What is the structure of the text?
A. B. C.
43. What can we know from this passage?
A. How to write deep and meaningful stories.
B. Children’s books are as deep as adult ones.
C. The history of the Hans Christian Andersen Awards.

Have you heard of the “giant panda of the water”? It’s the Yangtze finless porpoise (江豚), a national first-class protected animal found only in the Yangtze River. Sadly, its population dropped from about 2,700 in the early 1990s to around 1,012 by 2017. One reason is the increase in boat traffic, which has led to more noise and pollution in the river.
To protect the river and its wildlife, the government has come up with some new ideas. One is the river and lake chief system (河湖长制). Under this system, the river chiefs (河长) are responsible for protecting rivers and lakes.
The river chiefs do their routine tasks along the river to make sure there is no illegal (不合法的) pollution, and there are no floating objects. Besides, they also help deal with wastewater and protect riverbanks. Hunan Province has also set up the “12314” hotline so that people can report problems.
Since Jan 1, 2021, a 10-year fishing ban (禁渔令) has also been in place. It stops people from fishing for sale in the Yangtze River. In July 2024, for example, three people were fined (罚款) 9,900 yuan for catching 40 kilograms of fish in a no-fishing area. This ban is important because too much fishing has left the Yangtze finless porpoises with less food and has caused some to get caught in fishing nets.
Thanks to these efforts, the number of Yangtze finless porpoises stopped falling and rose for the first time in 2022, reaching 1249, then went on rising to 1,426 in 2026. Other important animals are also coming back. And scientists found some more native fish species in the Yangtze River.
44. How many finless porpoises were there in the Yangtze River in 2017?
A. About 2700. B. About 1012. C. About 1426.
45. What do the river chiefs do?
A. They check for possible problems along the river.
B. They set up hotlines for people to report problems.
C. They solve the problem of increasingly busy traffic.
46. Which can best explain the underlined words “floating objects”?
A. Things moving on the river.
B. Boats travelling on the river.
C. Animals playing in the river.
47. Why is the example in Paragraph 4 mentioned?
A. To show why fishing is of less importance.
B. To show people in this area live by fishing.
C. To show the fishing ban is carried out strictly.
48. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Exploring the Yangtze River is a meaningful task.
B. The government’s work on saving wildlife has paid off.
C. Everyone should be responsible for environmental protection.

Great news! To encourage students to explore science and develop creative thinking, our school will hold the Science and Technology Festival this month. Students can take part in competitions such as small inventions, robot design and science shows. All works will be on show in the school hall, and excellent teams will win prizes. This activity helps students practice hands-on skills and enjoy the fun of creating.
The Science and Technology Festival has been a popular event in our school for years. Teachers and students are all looking forward to it. As the school reporter, I interviewed some students and teachers. Here are some of their ideas.
Zhao Lei, Grade 9
This will be my third time to take part in the festival. In the past, I only made simple models. Now I plan to design useful small inventions. It will take me much free time to test my work, and I may meet some problems. But I will keep trying. I hope to learn new skills and become more patient.
Sun Yi, Grade 8
I’m going to join the robot design competition once again. As soon as I heard the news, I was really excited. Our team has discussed how to improve our robot design, and we hope to get a better result this year. We are looking forward to showing our best.
Ms Zhang, Science Teacher
We hold this festival every year. In the early years, few students cared about it. Now more students take it seriously. Although it takes plenty of time to prepare for their works, it helps students turn book knowledge into real skills and develop creative minds. That’s why they value and are willing to join it.
Li Hua’s mother
My son has taken part in the festival for four years. He will join it again this year. He always spends much time on his project and sometimes I worry about his lessons. But I see his great changes: he is more independent and brave to face challenges. I believe it is good for his growth.
Science is everywhere, and everyone can be a discoverer. By taking part in the festival, you will find that science is not only useful but also full of fun. So come and join us! Who knows? Your small idea today might change the world tomorrow.

【答案】44. B 45. A 46. A 47. C 48. B
