Four Hotels That Will Make Your Life Easier
When time is limited on business trips, slow hotel check-ins can be frustrating. Fortunately, many hotels now use technology to speed up the process. Here are four that help travelers save time.
1. Yotel New York: Robot Assistants
This hotel offers 24-hour kiosks similar to airport check--in machines. Guests follow simple steps to get their room key. The standout feature is the robotic luggage helper — you enter your bag details, and a robotic arm stores them automatically. Perfect for business travelers heading straight to meetings.
2. Marriott Detroit Airport: Mobile Check--In
Marriott’s mobile app lets guests check in the night before arrival. When they reach the hotel, they receive a message confirming their room is ready, with keys waiting at the front desk — no waiting in line needed.
3. Hyatt Regency Minneapolis: Fast Service
Hyatt’s kiosks make check-in and check-out quick. Insert your credit card and get your key in about three minutes. For checkout, staff meet you in the lobby with an iPad and immediately email your receipt.
4. Radisson LaCrosse: Scan and Go
At selected hotels, Radisson offers a faster system. Guests register through a mobile app in advance and receive a barcode. Scanning it at a kiosk immediately provides room keys — no additional steps required. Currently available in several US cities.

Roger Conner is a modern-day Horatio Alger hero. Roger started out as an unpaid worker in a small flower shop. He has become the owner of a florist company whose sales are well over $100,000 a year.
One day when Roger was only twelve, he stopped at a local flower shop. He asked the owner if he could work for him, without pay, in order to learn the business. Roger started working every day after school and on weekends. After two years on the job, he finally asked for a small salary. The owners told him he “wasn’t good enough to be paid.” So he quit, and found a paying job at another local flower shop. He worked hard there, but after six months they laid him off because business was slow. Not discouraged, Roger decided to do it alone and started his own flower store in a basement. He started his business with only sixty-five dollars. He bought old refrigerators at garage sales and knocked the shelves out. This turned them into coolers for his fresh-cut flowers. His business grew rapidly as he built up a reputation for top quality and fine service.
In 1977, Roger bought out the flower store where he had worked without pay for over two years. The people who said he “wasn’t good enough” were astonished to find that they were being taken over by a teenager. He had plans to renovate (整修) the whole store.
One of the reasons the owners sold out to Roger was that the store wasn’t doing well. But after Roger took over ownership and redid the store, business started booming. In fact, business was so good that after one year, he celebrated by buying out the other store where he had worked. Roger then combined both stores and moved to a location in the center of his town.
The new store has 2,000 square feet and seven employees. And he did it all before he reached the age of twenty.
41. The author is most eager to show that people who want to get ahead in business should ________.

Last night’s meteor (流星) shower left many people in the community dissatisfied and demanding answers. According to Gabe Rothschild, Emerald Valley’s mayor, people gathered in the suburbs of the city, carrying heavy telescopes, expecting to watch the brightly burning meteors passing through the sky. What they found instead was a sky so brightened by the city’s lights that it darkened the light of the meteors passing overhead.
“My family was so frustrated,” admitted town resident Duane Cosby, “We wanted to make this an unforgettable family outing, but it turned out to be a huge disappointment.”
Astronomers — scientists who study stars and planets — have been complaining about this problem for decades. They say that light pollution prevents them from seeing objects in the sky that they could see quite easily in the past. They call on people and the government to take measures to fight against it.
There is yet a population besides professional and amateur star observers that suffers even more from light pollution. This population consists of birds, bats, frogs, snakes, etc. For example, outdoor lighting severely affects migrating (迁徙的) birds. According to the International Dark-Sky Association, “100 million birds a year throughout North America die in crashes with lighted buildings and towers.”
Countless more animal casualties (伤亡) result from the use of artificial lighting. Clearly, people enjoy the benefits of lighting their evenings. But some scientists think it can be harmful for humans, too. They worry that exposure to light while sleeping can increase a person’s chances of getting cancer.
Emerald Valley is only one community that is becoming aware of the negative effects of light pollution. For years, Flagstaff, Arizona, has enforced lighting regulations in its city in order to assist astronomers at the Lowell Observatory. Similar efforts have been made worldwide, and a movement is underway to remind us to turn off lights when we are not using them, so that other creatures can share the night.

C. Varieties of animals will become sharply reduced
D. Animals’ survival is threatened by outdoor lighting.
49. Lighting regulations in Flagstaff, Arizona are put into effect to _____.
A. lessen the chance of getting cancer

C. Human activities should be environmentally friendly.
D. New equipment should be introduced for space study..

People aren’t walking any more — if they can figure out a way to avoid it.
I felt superior about this matter until the other day I took my car to mail a small parcel. The journey is a matter of 281 steps. But I used the car. And I wasn’t in ay hurry, either, I had merely become one more victim of a national sickness: motorosis.
It is an illness to which I had thought myself immune(), for I was bred in the tradition of going to places on my own two legs. At that time, we regarded 25 miles as good day’s walk and the ability to cover such a distance in ten hours as sign of strength and skill. It did not occur to us that walking was a hardship. And the effect was lasting. When I was 45 years old I raced — and beat — a teenage football player the 168 steps up the Stature of Liberty.
Such enterprises today are regarded by many middle-aged persons as bad for the heart. But a well-known British physician, Sir Adolphe Abrhams, pointed out recently that hearts and bodies need proper...is more likely to have illnesses than one who exercises regularly. And wlaking is an ideal form of exercise — the most familiar and natural of all.
It was Henry Thoreau who showed mankind the richness of going on foot. The man walking can learn the trees, flower, insects, birds and animals, the significance of seasons, the very feel of himself as a living creature in a living world, He cannot learn in a car.
The car is a convenient means of transport, but we have made it our way of life. Many people don’t dare to approach Nature any more; to them the world they were born to enjoy is all threat. To them security is a steel river thundering on a concrete road. And much of their thinking takes place while waiting for the traffic light to turn green.
I say that the green of forests is the mind’s best light. And none but the man on foot can evaluate what is basic and everlasting.
51. What is the national sickness?
A. Walking too much
B. Traveling too much
C. Driving cars too much

53. The author mentions Henry Thoreau to prove that__________.
A. middle-aged people like getting back to nature
B. walking in nature helps enrich one’s mind
C. people need regular exercise to keep fit
D. going on foot prevents heart disease
54. What is compared to “a steel river” in Paragraph 6?
A. A queue of cars.
B. A ray of traffic light.
C. A flash of lightning.
D. A stream of people.
55. What is the author’s intention of writing this passage?
A. To tell people to reflect more non life.
B. To recommend people to give up driving.
C. To advise people to do outdoor activities.
D. To encourage people to return to walking.

阅读表达
Just like everyone, I have experienced ups and downs in my life. I am an aerospace engineer from India, I was told by my relatives, close friends and others that it was hard for a non-IT student to pursue a master's degree in IT and graduate from a US university.
I had never taken courses related to computers or programming. I was never interested in being a programmer, but things changed. I became so fascinated with the convenience IT has brought to our life that I made up my mind in chasing a master's degree in IT.
At first, I came across too many difficulties and setbacks. Coming from a middle-class family, the huge cost per credit was a big issue. My English accent was terrible. Most importantly, the course seemed impossible at first. Although I felt so discouraged and frustrated, I never thought of giving up.
Then I decided to choose my university because it promised its students to help them learn practically. During my first month, it was difficult to understand the Americans' accent and finish my assignments. But I never gave in. I walked two miles to the university every day so that I could use my travel money to buy a meal. I started looking for jobs and I got an offer to work as a student assistant, which meant lifting benches and chairs every day.
I took all these challenges as my chances, and I believed that hard work was my strength. Right now I am graduating with a GPA of 3.96/4 and a job offer from a multinational company that has asked me to start right after graduation.
When you have a dream to realize, there is nothing that can stop you. All you need is the diligence and persistence. Hard work always pays off. Having a determined will is also necessary.
56. Why did the author's family and friends say that it was hard for him to pursue a master's degree in IT? (no more than 8 words)
57. What does the underlined part in paragraph 2 mean? (no more than 5 words)

42. Which of the following does NOT describe Roger Comer’s history in business?

After two years on the job, he finally asked for a small salary.(为了学习业务,他问老板是否可以无偿为他工作。罗杰开始每天放学后和周末工作。工作两年后,他终于要求一份微薄的薪水。)”可知有2年是免费工作;“Not discouraged, Roger decided to do it alone and started his own flower store in a basement.(罗杰没有气馁,他决定独自创业,在地下室开了自己的花店。)”可知,他在地下室开了自己的第一家花店和倒数第二段的“Roger then combined both stores and moved to a location in the center of his town.(然后罗杰把这两家店合并,搬到了镇中心的一个地方。)”可知,他在市中心开了一家商店。由此可知,他的创业经历里,没有运气的成分,只有努力和刻苦再加上思考,故选B。

【分析】本文是一篇议论文。许多人想在晚上看流星雨,结果由于光线太亮,影响了他们的观看效果。文章由这个事例引发出要讨论的话题——人们对光污染的思考。
【46题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段的最后一句话“What they found instead was a sky so brightened by the city’s lights that it darkened the light of the meteors passing overhead.(然而,他们却发现,城市的灯光照亮了天空,使划过头顶的流星的光芒都变暗了)”可知,昨晚城市的灯光影响了流星雨的观赏。故选A。

【答案】We can help protect the environment
Recently, for various reasons, our living environment has been polluted worse and worse. Then as students, what can we do to protect our environment?
First of all, we should save energy. For example, we should turn off anything that uses electricity when it’s not in use. Secondly, we should plant trees, which play an important role in making the air clean. Thirdly. We’d better avoid using disposable items and recycle whatever we can. Lastly, we may as well walk or cycle to school, which won’t cause air pollution.
If we want to drink clean water and breathe clean air, now we must take action together to protect our living environment.
