Every year in the US. , there are about 500 tornadoes, a natural disaster, from Texas through Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa and into South Dakota. That’s why this area is called “Tornado Alley”.
The “tornado season” is usually in spring, but the people in Tornado Alley are always ready for them and they always listen to the news. When the warnings come, people follow their disaster plans. They find somewhere safe to stay. At home, the best place is the basement-a room that is used to store things under the ground. If there is no basement, a room without windows, like the bathroom, is also a safe place.
“At school, we often have practice so that we can get ready and won’t feel afraid when there’s a tornado,” says Tiffany Taylor, a high school student from Texas. “There’s no basement at my school, so we usually go to the hallways on the lowest floors. Of course, we never sit near the windows.”
After the tornado, people first check to see if it is safe to go out and then they check the buildings and the area for damage. And usually there is a lot of damage!

It was the summer of 2017. The Asian Junior and Cadet Table Tennis Championships (亚洲青少年乒乓球锦标赛) took place in Asan, South Korea. For the first time, Chinese players Sun Yingsha and Wang Chuqin appeared side by side in the mixed doubles event. The two fresh faces amazed the world as they advanced to the finals and lifted the championship trophy (奖杯).
Both Sun and Wang describe their team-up as a “happy accident”. “Wang is a lefty (左撇子) , while I play right-handed, so I thought we’d make a great pair,” Sun later recalled.
As it turns out, her “sixth sense” was right. Wang’s sharp backhand flicks (反手拧拉) perfectly match her smooth forehand loops (正手弧圈). Following their victory in Asia, the duo (双人搭档) went on to win together. They won their first world title at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games. They also took two consecutive (连续的) wins at the World Table Tennis Championships (in 2021 and 2023) and a mixed doubles gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
This on-court chemistry (场上默契) takes work. In an interview, Wang shared how hard they trained. With their eyes set on gold in the mixed doubles event at the Paris Olympics, the duo trained together every day from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. They kept pushing themselves in practice, and the sweat was all worth it. “No pain, no gain,” Wang said. “When it hurts, it means you’re improving.”
They support and encourage each other. They have each other’s backs off the court, too. When Sun was going through a hard time in her career, Wang stayed by her side. And when Wang hit rock bottom last year, Sun offered him strength and encouragement.
At the 2025 World Table Tennis Championships, Sun and Wang’s chemistry lit up the court again. The whole stadium shouted with excitement as the superstar duo found their rhythm (节奏) in the mixed doubles final. They hardly missed a beat and pulled off an impressive hat trick (三连胜) .
When Sun and Wang first teamed up eight years ago, they didn’t know how deep their partnership would grow. But now, it’s clear: For them, the sky is the limit.
21. When did Sun Yingsha and Wang Chuqin win their first mixed doubles title (冠军)?
A. In 2017. B. In 2018. C. In 2021. D. In 2024.
22. Why did Sun think that she and Wang “would make a great pair”?
A. Because they were of the same age. B. Because they were both strong players.
C. Because they played using different hands. D. Because they had trained together for years.
23. According to the article, the chemistry (场上默契) between Sun and Wang is built upon their _________.
A. sixth sense B. hard training
C. competition experience D. natural talent in table tennis
24. Read Paragraph 5, which line of poetry comes to your mind?

25. At the end of the article, the writer implies (暗示) that Sun and Wang will _________.

C
